Book Project 2 - speculative horror on a cruise ship project 🚢 🌊🕷️👩🏼‍🤝‍👩🏻🚪🌀 This was the book I connected with my wonderful agent Carleen Geisler with in 2023.
I wrote a blog post with all the resources I found helpful while querying if that’s useful:
Another blog post, this project was longlisted in the QLD Writers Centre Publishable Program and I had a fantastic experience, including a mentorship with the indefatigable Sophie Overett (author of THE RABBITS). TLDR, Publishable was excellent and I highly recommend applying:
Also the year I tried a formal in-person crit group to revise this novel and it was a gamechanger. Great experience with Canberra Speculative Fiction Guild’s novel crit group.
Pictured—moodboard (made with Canva for a MoodPitch I never ended up participating in), bound copy of my draft by crit group buddy Charis (which absolutely made my day on one of those multiple writing rejections days), motivational querying meme (from a Shen Comix original), watercolour and pencil character sketches 2022-2023 (available as art prints, greeting cards etc in my INPRNT shop if you are interested in browsing) 💜

I need this, so in case anyone else does:
If you are a beginner, or a hobbyist, or coming back to a creative practice after a long time away: posts talking about how certain people are “bad at creating are not directed at you.
It’s not for you right now. Your job isn’t to make stuff that randos on tumblr will universally deem good enough. Your job is to make stuff. Your job is to make bad stuff, if needed.
Doing things poorly is almost always a prerequisite to doing things well, but that’s not the point. The point is that it is better to create something bad than it is to never create anything at all.
The critical posts are not for you right now.

The constant pre-Season 2 thought that maybe I should just dump all of my unpublished fic into the Keero tag now because it might not be relevant once we start getting information about the plot

I’m not that knowledgeable about femdom specifically but the difference between jp/kr is so real. Like the female characters in general feel so different… there are so many female characters in manhwa, even random side characters, that are scary and mean (hot), rlly strong/confident personalities, that I just do not see in jp manga. Also have no idea why + smt I’ve been puzzled about. Feel like it can’t just be a translation thing.
It's difficult to fully articulate since 1) who am I to comment on the state of writing for books in languages I do not speak and 2) as a non-native, I'm only ever aware of what stories other people choose to translate and the majority of comics are probably not being translated.
...But with all that acknowledged, yeah. I know exactly what you mean. And I don't know what to make of it either. It's so noticeable if you grew up on manga where even now there's still quite a bit of "waow...a conventionally attractive woman who's 167cm tall, wears pants, and is good at her job...how intimidating..." in work aimed at women
Of course you can find strong/confident personalities in manga and of course #notallmanwha but it's crazy how frequently I'll come across a manwha that sucks ass but still manages to sprinkle in cool, unique, imposing, memorable, cruel, unpleasant, unsettling, etc female characters, who are like that on purpose. What is up with that??? And how do we make that the norm everywhere

i'm having a slow start this morning and still ruminating about what a racket it is that college is considered like. this huge Thing art people need to go through to have a career. we made fun of frat boys for defending paying dues because it gave them access to ephemeral Important Network Connections and this doesn't seem much different. it's one of those things like, if you're on the level where you are here considering how to GET the very exclusive networking connections the ship for anything major has sailed, and anything smaller than that you can game yourself without paying 15k per semester
also how many horrifyingly successful creators do you know of who Accidentally fell into the thing that got them there, every single monolithic webcomic success story got there by just fucking around in some capacity lol. meanwhile i've known SO many people who did everything Right and got some secret webtoon anime deal, or an Image deal, or got A Deal but spent literal years in development hell because they DID find a publisher but indie comics are at the BOTTOM of the priority list no matter what your contract looks like, and you haven't heard of any of them because the work either never got finished or it's just gathering dust on the indie trade shelf in the back of the comic shop.
there are definitely choices you can make on purpose to put yourself in a better position to take advantage of opportunities if they arise, but anyone who thinks there is exactly one single path to success and it also happens to cost a lot of money is. selling something lmfao. just having a real, tangible body of work that you're passionate about is better clout than anything you could pay for

Personal pet peeve; when a book or a series gets a re-release with a new cover, but its just a surface-level reskin and the interior design or typography has not been adjusted to match.
Half-assery has its uses, but books deserve better than such half-assery.
