Book Project 2 - speculative horror on a cruise ship project 🚢 🌊🕷️👩🏼🤝👩🏻🚪🌀 This was the book I connected with my wonderful agent Carleen Geisler with in 2023.
I wrote a blog post with all the resources I found helpful while querying if that’s useful:
Another blog post, this project was longlisted in the QLD Writers Centre Publishable Program and I had a fantastic experience, including a mentorship with the indefatigable Sophie Overett (author of THE RABBITS). TLDR, Publishable was excellent and I highly recommend applying:
Also the year I tried a formal in-person crit group to revise this novel and it was a gamechanger. Great experience with Canberra Speculative Fiction Guild’s novel crit group.
Pictured—moodboard (made with Canva for a MoodPitch I never ended up participating in), bound copy of my draft by crit group buddy Charis (which absolutely made my day on one of those multiple writing rejections days), motivational querying meme (from a Shen Comix original), watercolour and pencil character sketches 2022-2023 (available as art prints, greeting cards etc in my INPRNT shop if you are interested in browsing) 💜

This fucking dumbass right here is gonna apply for a master's degree in gender studies in the homo/transphobic year of our lord 2025.
They want to assassinate me so bad.
#i need a drink lol. it's 2pm.#bragging time: i am an exceptional student. i've got 10 scholarships and awards under my belt and i now work at the university.#i might have actually been the top student in my graduating year in my program also because the program is basically dead.#my gpa on the 4 scale was a 4. i am an exceptional writer who has never used ai or copilot or any fucking robot assistant.#i've got professors in the department chewing on my ears trying to get me to apply to grad school -#- while also throwing shade at the current students' grades sdfghfdssdf it's terrible.#but how. in the everloving fuck. would this benefit me at all in the future. like it's so fucking pointless.#and how would it benefit the school too.#.....but it would be so hot to have a master's degree period...#one thing i haven't done though is publish any work. i really need to get on that if i want to pursue grad school.

how early is too early to start talking about a game youre developing? like if im working on a Big Project that is years away from an ashcan do i gotta keep that to myself for a while or can i stop chewing all my furniture and constantly bothering my loved ones
#indie ttrpgs#ttrpg community#years away from an ashcan but technically i'll be publishing on it within the year?#like within the next 6 months ish#im writing about it in my thesis which will be available online for people to read#but this game is like. what i aim to actually make for my dissertation#so if i get into the program i want to that is four years away#but also im maybe a little hyperfixated on it right now and i want to talk about ittttttttt#or do i keep it close to my chest until i have more#idkkkkkkkkk#because i have The ParanoiaTM i rarely post about my games bc i dont want people to like. yoink my ideas#so i usually go. okay heres a fully ready to go game no one knew i was working on. bye.#but i see other devs talking about their games more and it looks fun#genuinely looking for advice especially from other devs!!#ok bye

I need this, so in case anyone else does:
If you are a beginner, or a hobbyist, or coming back to a creative practice after a long time away: posts talking about how certain people are “bad at creating are not directed at you.
It’s not for you right now. Your job isn’t to make stuff that randos on tumblr will universally deem good enough. Your job is to make stuff. Your job is to make bad stuff, if needed.
Doing things poorly is almost always a prerequisite to doing things well, but that’s not the point. The point is that it is better to create something bad than it is to never create anything at all.
The critical posts are not for you right now.
#scrolling tumblr where people are very fairly critical of published and popular works they dislike as someone coming back to writing#feels like reading a nasty report card for someone with my same name but in an entirely different program

The constant pre-Season 2 thought that maybe I should just dump all of my unpublished fic into the Keero tag now because it might not be relevant once we start getting information about the plot
#I could get us to 100 fics if I just threw all of it on there at once#not the Amnesty Program AU though. I've worked too hard for too long on that to publish all of it in one go#but the rest of the one-shots and shorter fics... should I just spam the tag while people will still care

companies using AO3 for AI programs? I’m considering biting the bullet and uploading what I have written so far for some of my stories to AO3 but I don’t want it to be stolen for ai…
#I heard this a few years ago that some people use AO3 to train AI programs and I don’t wanna risk that happening to my writing#I will DEFINITELY be posting it to Toyhouse (plan on doing so soon actually!) so. it will be published somewhere to read#I just kinda wanted to use AO3 as well bc stuff gets more traction there and I want people to read about my ocs <3#I don’t have much written tbh. I’m just excited#puffin noises

I’m not that knowledgeable about femdom specifically but the difference between jp/kr is so real. Like the female characters in general feel so different… there are so many female characters in manhwa, even random side characters, that are scary and mean (hot), rlly strong/confident personalities, that I just do not see in jp manga. Also have no idea why + smt I’ve been puzzled about. Feel like it can’t just be a translation thing.
It's difficult to fully articulate since 1) who am I to comment on the state of writing for books in languages I do not speak and 2) as a non-native, I'm only ever aware of what stories other people choose to translate and the majority of comics are probably not being translated.
...But with all that acknowledged, yeah. I know exactly what you mean. And I don't know what to make of it either. It's so noticeable if you grew up on manga where even now there's still quite a bit of "waow...a conventionally attractive woman who's 167cm tall, wears pants, and is good at her job...how intimidating..." in work aimed at women
Of course you can find strong/confident personalities in manga and of course #notallmanwha but it's crazy how frequently I'll come across a manwha that sucks ass but still manages to sprinkle in cool, unique, imposing, memorable, cruel, unpleasant, unsettling, etc female characters, who are like that on purpose. What is up with that??? And how do we make that the norm everywhere
#I do feel comfortable saying manwha as a whole consistently has better art than manga#not on a preference level but like there are strong hints that the scene is so competitive you need an art degree to break into the industr#tho I'm not sure I would say I prefer that even if it means fantastic art for mid work#but for writing? No idea but maybe something similar happening here? Maybe you have to graduate from a school with a good writing program#take classes in character writing and have proven samples if you want to dreaming of publishing through Lezhin

i'm having a slow start this morning and still ruminating about what a racket it is that college is considered like. this huge Thing art people need to go through to have a career. we made fun of frat boys for defending paying dues because it gave them access to ephemeral Important Network Connections and this doesn't seem much different. it's one of those things like, if you're on the level where you are here considering how to GET the very exclusive networking connections the ship for anything major has sailed, and anything smaller than that you can game yourself without paying 15k per semester
also how many horrifyingly successful creators do you know of who Accidentally fell into the thing that got them there, every single monolithic webcomic success story got there by just fucking around in some capacity lol. meanwhile i've known SO many people who did everything Right and got some secret webtoon anime deal, or an Image deal, or got A Deal but spent literal years in development hell because they DID find a publisher but indie comics are at the BOTTOM of the priority list no matter what your contract looks like, and you haven't heard of any of them because the work either never got finished or it's just gathering dust on the indie trade shelf in the back of the comic shop.
there are definitely choices you can make on purpose to put yourself in a better position to take advantage of opportunities if they arise, but anyone who thinks there is exactly one single path to success and it also happens to cost a lot of money is. selling something lmfao. just having a real, tangible body of work that you're passionate about is better clout than anything you could pay for
#i think it's also telling that so so many creative programs are YEARS behind current methods of like. everything#the programs are outdated and everyone knows it so the only thing they can push at this point is OH BUT NETWORKING#keeping your cost of living low enough to be able to live off of poverty wages is the priority if you want to make a living w/comics tbh#there is no magical publisher deal on this planet that will make enough to comfortably deal with student loans

Personal pet peeve; when a book or a series gets a re-release with a new cover, but its just a surface-level reskin and the interior design or typography has not been adjusted to match.
Half-assery has its uses, but books deserve better than such half-assery.
#writeblr#booklr#typography#The Inheritance Cycle’s dropcaps are matched to the font of Eragon’s initial cover upon release#and The Magic Shop series has photorealistic illustrations that do not match the cartoony style of the new covers at all#Inheiritance Cycle is more egregious to me#because if you’re working in a proper design program it might take like two seconds to change the font on the dropcaps style#and even if not then going by hand to fix all the dropcaps isn’t too hard its just one per chapter#(said admittedly by someone with the patience to do that)#ALSO only Eragon was published by the time they republished it with the new cover#you would have only had to alter the one book#and one could have applied the new style going forward with the next one instead of carrying over the old???#maybe it’s justified if the maps are using the same font as the dropcaps but it still kind of clashes w/ the cover style#in our opinion that is
