RIV Inky Rutledge

Inky Rutledge was a player on the Yellowstone Magic when the first return happened in 2020. They found the 2-blood Blagonball after throwing the first-ever blaseball no hitter on Day 7 of Season 7 of beta. They were later a player on the Tokyo Lift and the Charleston Shoe Thieves. They fell back onto the Magic during Fall Ball, and were the inspiration for The Monitor's nickname, "Binky" (Big Inky).

They were a part of history. Duncan Phantom... you have a lot to live up too and I know it will be hard to, but I believe in you.

Kairo, 2001

Watched the Japanese techno-horror film: Kairo (aka Pulse), directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa. It is pretty absurd but definitely one of the scariest films I've ever watched! One particular scene was SO terrifying that my eyes were all watery with a sense of dread.

Earth Crisis - Steel Pulse (1984)

Steel Pulse is a roots reggae band from England that emerged in 1975 and continues to perform today. I was introduced to their album Earth Crisis, released in 1984, by my grandfather during a visit at his house. I really enjoy the album because of the heavy bass and funky groove it features in its tracks but the most powerful thing about the album is its message. Despite its fun sound, this album criticizes patterns of social injustices and violence within Western nations.

The album art features several notable elements like the American flag and Ronald Reagan, the Soviet Union flag, a military troop, a Klansman, and groups of children who are suffering and or presumably running for their lives, along with other depictions of important figures. I am aware that such an album for a first blog post may rub some the wrong way but I feel that this album features messages that are relevant in today's ongoing social issues.

During the 1980s, when this album was released, Ronald Reagan was the president of the United States and was the head of many social controversies during his presidency. Reagan is heavily criticized for his investment in the military by implementing tax cutbacks and cutting back on other non-military spending, which is referenced specifically in the song "Earth Crisis" on this album in the line "high tax and cutbacks for military defense." These actions were taken out of the fear that the Soviet Union, under Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev's rule (depicted in the album art), had gained more military power than the United States. This fear not only created issues domestically but it also caused problems with the United States' foreign policy. The implementation of tax cutbacks are known as "Reaganomics" and this system is responsible for a large increase in poverty and inequality during this time period. With that being said, Reagan is also notorious for the "War on Drugs" in the 80s that caused a lot of mass incarceration among the Black community. He is also responsible for the Immigration Reform and Control Act that made it hard for Mexican immigrants to get across the border or even find jobs in the United States. While this bit of background information isn't so brief, I'd like to summarize it by saying Ronald Reagan's time as president during the 1980s heightened various social issues regarding race and socioeconomic class, and encouraged almost unnecessary militarization for the sake of denouncing communism.

Tying this in to the album, Steel Pulse shows a very clear feelings of detest towards the government's negligence of its own people and vulnerable groups specifically. I mentioned previously that the song "Earth Crisis" directly criticizes government decisions and policies, however, Steel Pulse also draws attention to a mass amount of ignorance towards the "suffering" that people are enduring everywhere due to such policies. One of my favorite songs from this album, titled "Tightrope," specifically illustrates a life of living in poverty and how the challenges of not being able to afford necessities can feel like "walking on a tightrope."

Another song that I think is very important to discuss from this album is "Roller Skates." This song tells the story about a man who has his radio stolen and, while grieving the loss of his music, plans to track down and get revenge on the "criminal at large." I am uncertain about potential backstory to this song, however, a year after the release of Earth Crisis, in 1985, the Parent Music Resource Center (PMRC) emerged as a group driven to limit the youth's access to music that includes topics about sex, drugs, and/or violence. This became a large issue among popular musicians at the time, especially those who ended up on the PRMC's "Filthy Fifteen" list (a list of the top 15 most inappropriate songs), and resulted in a senate hearing in which musicians had to defend against the prohibition of their music as it infringes on the rights of individuals who are not children.

With that being said, the track "Wild Goose Chase" is the only track from the album that I don't so much appreciate from a social perspective as it criticizes the use and existence of contraceptives, abortions, and fertilization methods (typically used for those that are struggling to have children) as forms of population control. I believe that access to all of these resources is a matter of health care and I do not think that they should condemned for the sake of morality since they can be crucial to one's health. I do find it ironic that these criticisms are made after discussions of poverty since sometimes having a baby can be detrimental to one'e economic wellbeing and they not have the ability to care for their child after it is born. There is a correlation between poverty and child neglect/abuse cases that often negatively affects vulnerable groups like people of color and single parent homes.

These are only a few of the tracks from the album of which I do really enjoy the overall sound and message. I can appreciate both the musical artistry and the political and social focus that Steel Pulse uses and I would definitely recommend it for those who enjoy or want to get into reggae. Despite the controversy around many of their lyrics I found Earth Crisis to be an enjoyable album.

Regarding The Ancients (Part 2)

I think this screenshot says it all. In the last post I talked about the Ancients in general and there are a lot of great candidates for who they were in the Danny Phantom cast. After all, villains could count among them too because all Skulker said was that “...a group of powerful ancient ghosts banded together in a last ditch effort to defeat the King” which when you think about it doesn’t necessarily mean they were all ‘good’ ghosts. They probably had no choice but to become allies to take down someone who threatened the balance of both worlds...

Still, I like to think of most of them as the good guys so we’ll start with them.

Clockwork is obviously the most logical choice because not only is he already wearing a purple cloak that’s extremely similar to the Ancients in the flashback, but he also has statues of the Grim Reaper, aka Death, all over his tower along with lots of scythes. But it makes sense given how he’s probably old enough to have known Death personally. Bonus points if they were brothers since time and death go hand in hand.

Danny Phantom Randomness (The Way of the Ninja)

“Infinite Realms” is a really interesting episode despite being from Season 3 since it gave us a lot of cool concepts like Blood Blossoms, Frostbite & the Far Frozen, and the Infimap. And in the most recent chapter of my fanfic “Nevermore” I wanted to come up with a way to get Danny and the gang to Salem and figured why not use the Infimap since Vlad wasn’t there to steal it in this timeline? Still, this one scene where Danny was a Ninja always stood out to me for some reason and now I think I know why...

On the surface it looks like he staged this dramatic entrance but what if there was a bit more to it than that? What if the timing was a little off and Danny, Sam, and Tucker got there a bit earlier than Vlad and Danny actually trained with someone in the Ninja ways? Say, a guardian spirit he warned about Vlad trying to take over the kingdom?

To be fair, Danny’s a fast learner so picking up sword fighting probably wouldn’t take too long. And better yet, it would explain how Danny managed to blend in so well in this scene because I’d like to think that if Vlad didn’t already KNOW it was him, Danny learned how to mask his ghost signature Ninja style.

Once I got started on this, I couldn’t stop. Literally all I meant to do was make some line art for later out of a title card template I found to redraw from scratch for Halloween, but I got carried away while experimenting with some recolors as you can see...

I did redo Danny’s face since there were a lot of subtle differences between the concept art and the final version. Still, I’m sure you all know how much I love the Fright Knight so here’s another preemptive drawing since October is right around the corner!
