Nanny’s Pyrex Pattern
The person who designed this pattern on Bracelet Book had a few different vintage Pyrex patterns. I was thrilled to find my grandmother’s (who we all called “Nanny”) pattern. She had a whole set of dishes with this pattern that I fondly remember using when I was growing up. Sadly, she passed away last year, but I will always think of her when I see this Pyrex pattern. It’s called Butterfly Gold, for anyone who’s wondering.

Pattern Time!

I channeled the godawful original wallpaper, shag carpet, and popcorn ceiling from my childhood home, which was built in 1976.
In honor of the 21st night of september and @sarahhillips' time travel au from a few months ago I give you 70s reporter James. I may or may not have done this listening to Funkadelic and also Steve Miller Band.
Its all fun and games until you find yourself sexually attracted to your own drawing of an aged-up alternate-universe version of a cartoon character you crushed on as an 11 year old who also happens to be wearing 1970s style which is unequivocally the tackiest decade to happen to 20th century fashion, crimes against wool were committed.
#don't forget the burnt orange sofa#In the burnt orange room#and the wood-paneled TV#in the wood-paneled entertainment center#and the other wood-paneled TV that had dials instead of buttons and a coathanger antenna#and the burnt orange pyrex dishes#with the harvest grain pattern#the cathedral-ass looking wood-panel speakers for the turntable#the vinyl album collection in the burnt orange milk crates#the honey-stained wood-paneled basement with the bar that had the same wood paneling#the 70s were so full of BROWN and ORANGE#The fridge managed to have wood-paneling somehow#I was born in the early 90s but my parents still had shit from the 70s/early 80s#the microwave from 1982 had wood-paneling

i highly recommend collecting old shit as a hobby, especially practical and mildly affordable old shit
ive been getting into pyrex like very passively because its so cute and its so so so durable and unlike a lot of other vintage cookware its.......... still usable! and very rarely tainted with lead!
anyway i found out today my inherited set of vintage corelleware has a corresponding pyrex pattern from the 70s and im being sooooooooooo normal about it

"Do you think Bags cares about us? I didn't program that."

Character Name: Pyrex
Fandom: Realms of Peril & Glory (@realmspod) , CY_BORG campaigns [Podcast]
Played By: Shamini Bundell
Yarn Used: Skin: CraftSmart Value - Coffee Clothes/Hair/Bags: Loops & Threads Soft and Shiny - Onyx Rainbow Circuits: DMC #G168
Basic pattern here.

Our beloved little orphaned gearhead (NOT a hacker). Pyrex is just one of those characters you instantly want to wrap up in a warm blanket and keep safe from everything - including, let’s be realistic, herself. She’s so delightfully awkward and earnest and I just love her. (I don’t think Shamini is capable of playing a character I hate.)

Pyrex differs from the base pattern as follows:
Trousers: I gave her stirrup pants. I don’t know why. I just felt very strongly that Pyrex would have stirrup pants and bare feet for some reason. So I stitched the first round of the leggings in the front loops of the last round of her feet, then slip stitched to a point that looked like the right place and did a chain until it was long enough to go under the foot and slip stitch back into the other side of the cuff, at which point I chained one and continued as normal.
Tunic: I was going for a baggy, sort of oversized top for her, so I did the ridge at the waistband like I did with Mini and Azu. After I finished the rest of her torso, I went back with the yarn and added the long part. I took a week off in the middle of working on Pyrex to make a baby blanket for a friend who was moving and wouldn’t have a fixed address for a while, and because when I went back to her I still had the stitch I used for that in mind, I decided to do a Catherine’s wheel stitch for the bottom (which is a bitch and a half to do in the round, just FYI). The pattern was as follows: R1: Join yarn to loop produced from flo/blo stitching in center of back. Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st in first sc (38 sc). R2: Ch 1, sc in next 9 st, 2sc in next st, sc in next 18 st, 2sc in next st, sc in next 9 st, sl st in first sc (40 sc). R3: Ch 1, [sc in next st, skip next 3 st, 7 dc in next st, skip next three st] 5 times around, sl st in first sc (5 sc, 35 dc). R4: Ch 1, 4dctog. [Ch 3, sc in next dc, ch 3, 7dctog] 4 times. Ch 3, sc in next dc, ch 3, 3dctog, sl st in first 4dctog (5 sc, 5 7dctog, 10 ch3 sp). R5: Ch 3 (counts as first dc). 3dc in same st. [Skip ch3 sp, sc in next sc, skip ch3 sp, 7dc in next 7dctog] 4 times. Skip ch3 sp, sc in next st, skip ch 3 sp, 3dc in first st, sl st in first ch (35 dc, 5 sc). R6: Ch 1, [sc in first dc, ch 3, 7dctog, ch 3] 5 times, sl st in first sc (5 sc, 5 7dctog, 10 ch3 sp). Fasten off.

Head: Pyrex was described as having filaments and wires across her face, presumably wiring her RCA (and, as we later found, her connection to Bags). And, well, I had a whole bunch of leftover metallic thread from a cross-stitch project I did for my brother that I swore I would never use on aida again. (Someone on the Old Gods of Appalachia Discord server referred to it as “the devil’s asshair” and I have not been able to think of it any other way since.) Except that I ended up buying silver metallic thread specifically for this project that worked a lot better. Anyway, I really like how that came out. For her pigtails, I used the same method I’ve used since Alice to put hair in around the outside edges of her scalp, then also in two lines down the middle back for the part, and then looped a few more in the middle to fill it out. They turned out cute!
Arms: I used the same technique I used for Mini’s hands - just stitching around the magnets - for Pyrex’s. Partly that was because I forgot to bring any stuffing with me when I got to her arms and I didn’t feel like going top down, but mostly it was because she just struck me as the skinny sort.

Bags: What would Pyrex be without her spider robot companion?

I probably overcomplicated this a lot, but basically I just crocheted a rectangular cube, put a big red eye on one end, and made his legs with sculpting wire and yarn. I crocheted a line of single crochet around the wires, then stitched them to Bags’ body. He doesn’t stand up as well as I’d like, but he turned out pretty good!

I’m gonna start 2024 with beef on the Jojo Blog.
because David Productions really had the audacity to give Joseph Joestar a sad beige mom penthouse with a flat screen TV in 1980s New York…
Like you can’t sit here and tell me they didn’t have a crystal cabinet in their harvest gold appliances only kitchen where Nonna Suzi put all her Butterfly Gold pattern lead paint Pyrex. Nor can you convince me that there wasn’t an area that once housed Grandpa JoJo’s conversation pit now replaced with red leather couches and wall to wall shag carpet that goes in all the bathrooms but not in the kitchen because they picked the most darling vinyl flooring to match.
#fucking amateurs#I was a 90s baby who still had 80s decor#I’ve seen hell#and you can’t tell me Joseph wouldn’t have it that way#dont get me started on the macintosh plus that I know they’d have in the study

8. Do you collect anything? If so, what?
Anon if you could see my ROOM! It is literally a 90s time capsule. Anything and almost everything 90s you could think of; I have. TMNT action figures, Tamagotchi's, Beanie Babies, Furbies, CDs, VHS', DVDs, vinyls/45s, Build A Bears... I also collect Pyrex and Fire King and Anchor Hocking (serving bowls, mugs).
This was the little fucker that started it all for me! I got it at a antique store near the cottage I go to and the guy that owned the antique store, Randy, was openly gay and always had pride displays and support (especially in a small town). I had been going to his store for EASILY 15 years (when we started cottaging in that area). After I bought this mug, he passed away suddenly within that year and ever since then; I started to collect these kind of mugs. I always think of him now whenever I find a new one for my collection.
One of the most beautiful Pyrex patterns EVER and found it for $10!
15. Do you have any houseplants? Do any of them have names?
Ohhhh I have SO MANY...omg...lemme do a count...20! I do not name them but, some of them are over 15 years old! Got that 💚 thumb, baby!
22. Iced or hot drinks?
BOTH! I love iced coffee but I also love a hot cup of coffee! I LOVE iced tea but I also like a hot peppermint tea! DO YOU SEE WHAT I'M SAYING? BOTH!

Hello: In the post with a picture of vintage pyrex I thought I remembered a website that said there was lead in that pattern so I replied with a link, but then google showed Snopes saying it is unproven, so I deleted my reply. I had googled lead paint pyrex amish butterprint. I read an article in the Guardian recently about lead on vintage glassware and it got me worried.
Hey, thanks for letting me know! FWIW it didn't even pop on my activity feed so you must have deleted pretty fast :D
I'd honestly rather people let me know if they've heard of something like that; of course it's best to look up the facts first but usually if someone's like "Oh Sam no that's the Leaded Cookware" I'll still go investigate for myself. I appreciate that you were looking out for me because lead poisoning truly is awful. It's one of my huge fears in life, the idea of consuming something that slowly starts to degrade my cognition and I don't notice because it's degrading.
I do take comfort in the fact that it takes a lot of specific exposure over a long period of time, generally, to absorb lead from cooking/serving vessels; you definitely shouldn't just throw caution to the wind, like maybe don't drink from the Tainted Garfield Glasses, but you have to cook and eat a LOT of food from a very high-lead pan before you start having issues.

I did a really really bad job sleeping last night. After being so exhausted all day I was hoping I could go to sleep at a normal time but not. 3am. It was not a fun night. I had a horribly runny nose and a burning throat and I was just so uncomfortable. I could only breathe if I was sitting up. I was just having a pretty bad time. I tried reading for a while. And that helped a little but I was just not having fun. I did get to sleep eventually but it was a horrible struggle.
I woke up at 9 and felt. Fine. Not amazing. It felt like I was swallowing glass but mentally I was alright. I was looking forward to hanging out with Jess.
She was having a tough morning and thought she might be running late. But that was fine with me. I got washed and dressed and then wasn't sure what to do because I didn't know if she was ready to go yet.
So I made the decision to go wait on the car for a minute. And then I left. She would only be s few minutes behind me and it all worked out.
It was a pretty nice drive to Havre De Grace. I thought I hadn't been there before but it turned out it was near the decoy duck museum James took me to years ago. But this town was so cute.
I parked and read an article and then Jess was pulling in a few cars away from me. I was so happy to see her.
We would go to the vintage cafe. And at first it was nice and quiet but it would pretty quickly get incredibly loud for such a small space. I still really enjoyed our conversations and it was fun.
She got an omelet and I got a grilled cheese. We shared our potatoes (home fries and french fries). And it was a nice cheap little meal.
When we finished we would head down the street to one of the antique malls. There were a handful in this town which is very cool and gives us a good reason to come back.
This place was huge. And I had so much fun looking around. It is always interesting seeing how many of the same thing you fine, and how many weird things you find.
We also just had good funds today. Jess collects a specific type of basket. Or rather a specific brand. And she was looking for a larger one. She would find it, plus two medium sized ones. She also got a very cool candle holder. I would find some presious lilly of the valley wall hooks that will be perfect for the bathroom in the new house.
I would also find a little Boyd's bear panda. And a beautiful pressed flower bracelet. I wasn't sure I was going to actually get the bracelet but me and Jess were being really good about checking comp prices for everything on eBay and this bracelet was going to $110 so I was getting an amazing deal. And I love it. It's the state flower too so I love that.
We were having a lot of fun. Laughing at weird stuff. Like the double toilet bathroom. And just being silly and having a good time.
Once we were done there we paid and went to drop the bags off at the car. Then across the street to a retro reproduction and dead stock/pyrex store. She got a very cool pyrex shirt and I liked that people are using circuit machines to put Pyrex patterns on cups. I didn't find one I love but it's going on the wishlist for sure.
We decided we were antiqued out but we wanted to go to good will still. We would have to drive 15 minutes to go there. Which was fine except a big truck was parked behind me unloaded and I was kind of trapped. I was able to maneuver out, with no thanks to some guy making illegal moves to get the parking spot next to me. But I got out and was able to follow Jess to Aberdeen .
This wasn't an amazing goodwill. But Jess found a sweet jacket. I was a little horrified by some of the prices. Like $50 for a shitty scratched up skateboard. But it was still fun to look around.
We saw there was a restore across the street so we went to look there next. A very good selection but mostly just for ideas for us. Jess says she has most of the furniture she needs now. So it will be me searching for things once we move.
We didn't find the accordion wall hooks she was looking for but that's alright. She would find some online later.
We hugged and said goodbye. And we both headed home. I was getting tired.
The drive home kind of sucked. Some traffic but I just started feeling very very bad. Like head cold bad. Like I'm feeling very sick bad. It was kind I got hit with a brick wall. I desperately wanted to be home.
When I got back here I was excited to see I had a package. I had ordered new Minnetonka boots. And they are great and will keep my feet nice and warm.
After putting things away I got changed into my sweatsuit and laid down. I did not let myself sleep. I want to sleep tonight at a normal time. So I kept myself awake. And was just kind of miserable and not feeling well.
I waited for James to come home.
When they got back they babied me a bit. And would make sure I was alright before doing their short podcast episode for the night. And then they went to go and get us pizza. I got mine with broccoli. We don't really want to be eating out so much but we have no oven and no stove and it's very annoying. We have reached out to Tina and hopefully she solves this quick.
I had a few documents I had to send to the mortgage people. So that took some of my focus. And eventually I took a bath and scrolled on my phone which is not the safest but I was careful.
And now I am just. So tired. And very uncomfortable. I'm going to take a NyQuil and hopefully I can sleep and be well tomorrow. I'm not holding my breath because I think I have a cold. But I will try my best to take care of myself.
I hope you all sleep well tonight. I love you all. Goodnight!

Have been gazing longing at miniature recreations of Nordic Tableware and 50s Pyrex that reminds me of my childhood.
Not because I was a child in the 50s but because we were poor and still using old stuff. We might still have some of the Pyrex. Trying to remember which patterns my grandma had on her cups that probably were giving me lead poisoning to order tiny dollhouse accessories of.
This has been a fixation for multiple hours.

"The FDA began enforcing limits on leachable lead in 1971, and a vintage Pyrex pattern commonly targeted as purportedly high in lead content didn't even go into production until 1972, after all manufacturers were subject to the FDA's new leachable lead standards."
