I had a great week. Duplicates auto-resolution is easier to preview, and I have re-introduced a way to 'lock' a search page in place.

This release updates several important libraries in Windows and Linux.

new build

The Windows/Linux 'future build' test last week went well, no reports of problems. It seems like Win 10 will still run the program, although I suspect a very old (i.e. un-updated) version may have trouble. If you cannot boot the build today, please consider running from source and choosing an older version of Qt in the interactive setup: https://hydrusnetwork.github.io/hydrus/running_from_source.html

If you use the zip or tar.zst, it does not seem like you have to do a 'clean install', but the build releases are changing a bunch of stuff so it is a good time to do one anyway: https://hydrusnetwork.github.io/hydrus/getting_started_installing.html#clean_installs

If you run from source, this is a good week to rebuild your venv. Users on python 3.13 no longer have to choose the (a)dvanced install.

locked pages

A long time ago, when you opened files 'in a new page' or from a subscription files popup, the page created would have no search controls. It would just be a static page that could hold files. It worked well as a 'scratchpad' to work on, but you could not easily search the files if you wanted to.

I replaced that mode with 'initialise the page with a system:hash predicate', which helped simplify things behind the scenes but makes it annoying to append new files or merge other pages into it, since the underlying system:hash stays stuck as what it was originally.

Today we fix this. All search pages now have a 'lock' icon button beside the tag autocomplete text input. Click this, and the current search collapses to a system:hash for the current files in view and the search interface is replaced with an unlock button. It will keep track of when you add or remove files, and if you unlock, the system:hash is of what is currently in view. Have a play with it, and you'll see how it works.

Whenever a new page is created with files--which usually means 'open in a new page' or a subscription file popup--it now starts in the locked state. The old 'no search enabled' behaviour is back, but if you want you can flip to a regular search with one click. Let me know how it goes!

auto-resolution preview

The duplicates auto-resolution 'preview' panel, when you were editing rules, was running way too slow. It could take thirty seconds to load up a count or a preview on a big client, every time you made a change. I've overhauled the whole thing to stream results in fast pieces, with pause buttons and faster cancel tech and better feedback. This system also now handles when the pair comparison takes a while to compute. It is pretty much all ready for 'A and B are visual duplicates'.

I fixed a couple more false positives in 'A or B are visual duplicates'. There's one edge-detection situation that I poured a ton of time into and still failed to catch, so I'm going to keep thinking about it. Please send in any more weird pairs you come across!

Auto-resolution rules in semi-automatic mode will now only queue up 512 items for 'ready to action'. This queue can take a while to build and resets any time you change the rules, so I'm limiting it to keep things snappy. You can change the limit or remove it entirely in the edit rule panel.

Hello, what exactly are nominations? What are they used for?

Hello!

When you sign up for the exchange, you must request and offer characters, relationships, or worldbuilding elements from the HGE 2023 tagset. The nomination period is where anyone can submit up to four tags to the tagset. Nominating tags does not commit you to participating in the event, nor does not nominating preclude you from signing up.

What are nominations for? When you sign up to request and offer fanworks, you’ll select from the characters and relationships listed in our tag set. Nominations are how we create that tag set.

Do I need to nominate? You can sign up without participating in nominations, but be aware that your signup can only include characters or relationships from the tag set. If you want to make certain you can request or offer a particular character or relationship, you may want to nominate them.

How do I nominate characters or relationships? First, you need an AO3 account. If you don’t have one, you can request one here or reach out to us about getting an invite, as we have some to spare and it will jump you to the top of the queue.

When you’re logged into AO3, open the tag set, click "nominate" at the top, and enter up to four characters or relationships, and submit! You can ignore the fandom field.

Relationships and worldbuilding must also be submitted under the "character" submission in the following format: Relationship: [characters] Worldbuilding: [element]

For instance: Relationship: Eddis/Sophos Relationship: Helen & Gen Worldbuilding: Eddisian myths

If you're interested in requesting or offering fanworks featuring an individual character (for example, Heiro), simply enter that character's name.

If you're interested in requesting or offering fanworks featuring a platonic relationship (for example, Heiro and Agape interacting as rivals or friends), enter "Relationship:", then the characters' names separated by an &, like this: Relationship: Heiro & Agape

If you're interested in requesting or offering fanworks featuring a romantic or sexual relationship (for example, Heiro and Agape as girlfriends), enter "Relationship:", then the characters' names separated by an /, like this: Relationship: Heiro/Agape

You'll put both characters and relationships in the Character field. Sorry, I know that's a little confusing! :)

Which characters or relationships should I nominate? To make signups and matching easier, please nominate characters and relationships you have a genuine interest in requesting or offering.

Only one nomination is necessary per character or relationship, so you may want to coordinate with other people to be sure you aren’t duplicating nominations. You can check the tag set to see what has already been approved.

Only characters who appear in or are mentioned in the Queen’s Thief books or short stories, and relationships containing these characters, will be approved.

What counts as worldbuilding? For the purposes of this exchange, the worldbuilding nomination option is to allow people to request a gift that expands and builds into a particular aspect of how the canon QT world works. It might develop an element of canon in more depth, show something from a different point of view, or expand on aspects of the QT world that are not shown. For example, if you are interested in learning more about the Court of the Ten Nations, the pre-Invader Little Peninsula, or how the Eddisian trial tradition developed, these are aspects of worldbuilding that you might submit as nominations:

Prompts may consider questions like, “How do the gods in different pantheons interact?” or “What are the practical and political effects of the Charter of the Three States” or “If the Queen’s Thief world is almost like our world’s Early Renaissance in the Mediterranean region, what do other parts of the globe look like during this period?”

What it’s not: the worldbuilding request is not for requesting a specific AU or different setting. Suggestions and prompts for possible AUs is what letters are for. You can see more about letters in the FAQ under “Signups.”

What happens next? I’ll be approving nominations periodically. This should be pretty straightforward. AO3 doesn’t tell the mod who put in each nomination, so in the unlikely event I have questions, I’ll post them to Tumblr and the Queen's Thief discord. You may want to keep an eye out for posts on either platform (you'll want to check the "announcements" channel on Discord).

You can edit your nomination until it’s been approved. At that time, you’ll no longer be able to edit.

Y’all it’s been a MINUTE

okay let’s be frank - there’s a lot of reasons I’ve been MIA, which include the panini, my job, me moving, and a car crash (I’m fine altho I have a weird red spot from my road burn that will Not go away on my left knee). But the main reason is my illnesses, which I’ve spoken about before but I finally got a diagnosis. I have fibromyalgia! It’s not great but I’m dealing.

The issue is it causes a lot of issues with my fine motor function. Typing, especially on a phone, gets painful very quickly and I do a lot of typing and fine motor function things at work already. So to keep this blog active, I’m not gonna be able to tag stuff very well. I’ll definitely still tag for major triggers (and if someone has a specific trigger, let me know, I’ll tag for that too) but otherwise it’s gonna be very minimal. If I could have a moderator who goes back and tags, I’d love that! But I don’t know if that’s likely. So that’s what it’s going to be for the foreseeable future.

Also - I have about 100 things in the queue. I’ll let you guys know when I get to the ending and then if I missed your post, let me know! Doesn’t matter if it’s art, meta, a video, or a shitpost, just tell me I missed it and I’ll throw it in the queue!!

I’ll do another qt appreciation, but probably in the middle of the year. The summer months seem to work okay for everyone, and also it gives me a minute to get things together, hah.
