- Q for Quarantine Queen - Multitasking on caffeine. They’re our working sans vaccine. Glad we share a gene, With our quarantine king and queen. This was one of my favorite “letters” to shoot for our ABC(ornona) book. Originally @bonetiredmama and I thought we would use some old straw fans from the Philippines, but Mateo suggested we just use a dusty fan from the basement to give it a modern day twist. Genius idea. Mateo also went for the true toga experience, while Kaleb just wrapped himself in his Flash robe and ate most of the grapes during the shoot. Noodle of course made an appearance - she is this project’s garden gnome. Want a quick outing idea for your kids in quarantine? Try goofy golfing. I’m obsessive and brought my own Clorox wipes to wipe clubs and balls but it was a fun outdoor experience. It is amazing how ordinary things like venturing out to hike on a new trail instead of the seemingly endless loops in our own neighborhood become so exciting when we haven't been out much. We had a nice afternoon walking and enjoying some sunshine and nature not too far from home. The kids had fun throwing rocks into water (I had forgotten how long they could stay occupied in this manner...who needs video games!). Today’s “school,” sandwiched between zoom calls with each of their preschool classes, was filled with their favorite things: trains + paw patrol. . We started with a new book “steam train, dream train,” then we quickly moved into our trays: . 1. We filled a small bin with pups and trains to measure with these popsicle stick rulers. They LOVED this. M was saying all sorts of silly stuff but did line everyone up by size, while H really caught on to the idea of measuring in inches. . 2. Laminated paw patrol mazes — seriously, I was almost sad that they didn’t need my help for these? We’ve never done mazes together but they didn’t hesitate. . 3. I wrote their letters as tracks for them to decorate with stickers. Also a hit. . 4. These counting cards from preKautism.com are so awesome. They go up to 20. Kids loved. . 5. Paw patrol coloring sheets that I turned into color by letter/#/site word. I can’t tell you how long H worked on his— truly amazed me. For a kid who barely colored in lines a few months ago, he’s come so far! (M was playing at the chalkboard by this point.) . 6. This alphabet train from @stayathomeeducator was great — I wasn’t really sure what they’d want to do with it so just left it out with magnetic letters. H made an entire train in ABC order and M happily sang along a zillion times. When he was searching for letters, I’d give her hints like “oh, M, can you hand H the purple train car to your left?” and she was all in. . H told my husband later that he had the most fun day at school yet. So I felt accomplished 💗. However, all of that makes it easy to forget that we did NOT get off to an insta-worthy start. They got into a nasty fight over these silly little felt trains I made. H wanted to line them up by number and M had a color lineup in mind. Within seconds, Ms hand was bleeding and they were both screaming at each other?? So I made them go to their rooms for a break while I made a second coffee. We reset and tried again. I’m glad I didn’t give up bc it was an awesome morning! Posting a new project! Since we are stuck inside with our boys, @bonetiredmama and I decided that we wanted, and needed, to create something new and different. So Marvi and I made a book! A slightly irreverent parents A-Z guide on surviving the lockdown! How do you talk to your kids about the pandemic, from anxiety, to inequality, to finding some levity? We have tried to be open with the boys on many subjects — from talking about sex, politics, and mental health. We wanted to create an honest piece that parents could relate to, or maybe even use as a guide post for starting conversations with their own children. We have certainly been speaking to the boys about their privilege and the inequities in the American system that have become more apparent in the last few months. We also knew that we wanted this to be a respite from the depressing deluge of the 24-hour news cycle. ABC(orona) was borne out of the desire to create, “spark joy,” connect with other parents, and to find the vocabulary to speak to our kids about hard truths. Maybe we’re not the best people to give guidance to current and future parents since we’re just winging it, but here we are, hoping to connect with others who know more. This coronavirus is changing our lives in ways that we are unaware of...in ways that we can’t see coming! If you have kids right now, I wonder what you are telling them b/c I know it’s hard explaining to your child that you can’t go to the park and when he or she asks when can you go to the park; you don’t have an exact date or answer ..and it must be hard explaining to your child why this is going on in the first place ..i’m sure they are asking you when this will all be over .. OCEAN DAY...Today we learned about the ocean. We dressed as sailors and explored David's room looking for all sea creatures we could find. Then we played flash cards with sea animals and also painted a few with "mucha agua". When we finished papi took a picture of us with one of the new animals David learned about today, the crab. In the end, David wanted more on animals so we started or zoo lessons and games. Now, watching the Little Mermaid with lunch. We've been seeing documentaries on the ocean like the dolphin one from @disneyplus as well. I wish I could have taken him to the @aquaticaorlando or @seaworldorlando and to the beach this weekend. But that will come next year.
