THE HEELS & THE MOM... The heels gave me more than a name. It gave me you! I started wearing heels on a normal basis when I was about 13-14. Even with my jeans in highschool... I had a short phase with sneakers and baggy jeans but mostly, I wore heels. And as years went by, they got thinner and higher. I was known for wearing heels to things no one else wore them. I even wore them to the countryside once and had to cross a river with rocks on them (long story). At the advertising agency in Madrid, the team of designers that worked on my Microsoft account knew I was coming to ask about the designs because of the noise my heels made when I walked. Today, they are part of my identity as a microinfluencer. What started as a possible blog and store to start something with my sister (reserved the url before I knew I was pregnant), ended in an instagram account to share my kid's pictures and then developed into an account where moms wanted to hear more about the working mom in the pictures. The shoes gave me a logo, you guys made it a symbol of my identity. When this quarantined life ends... What is “healthy weight?” The CDC has guidelines. Doctors have suggestions. Fitness and fashion industries have “standards.” What does it all mean? From both ends of the weight spectrum, my “healthy weight” is based on these criteria: (1) am I healthy? Are there any health issues that can be prevented or mitigated by weight management? (2) am I happy? How does my weight and size affect how I see myself? Does it affect my self efficacy or esteem? (3) is my weight hurting anyone other than myself? (4) why do I feel the way I do about my weight / size? (5) do I want to be a particular size for me or for someone else? These are the questions I ask myself to form my own identification of my “healthy weight.” People tell me I don’t “look like a” <personal trainer / barre instructor / yoga teacher>. But to what are they comparing me? Media portrayals of stick thin, shredded, bulky, muscular stereotypes? Or are they comparing me by knowledge, effectiveness, and ability to motivate and inspire? I have endured real life weight struggles. I am realistic and relatable. Would you rather someone who understands you, intimidates you, or shames you? People require our energy, because we have to try to be cognizant of THEIR feelings, THEIR moods, THEIR idiosyncrasies, and everything is always about THEM. No one wants to give THEIR energy to us. Rather than accept us, they expect to change us. We are not they. Not are they we. We should be accepted for OUR “idiosyncrasies,” which really are just characteristics of autism.
