2 did you have any reading goals?

I think my reading goal was partly to do some reading, which I succeeded at (37 books). However, my goal to finish the 4 books I was in the middle of reading in 2022 is....one quarter complete. I finished Linda Grant's "The Clothes On Their Backs" which was a....fashion themed retelling of the life of Peter Rachman, refugee Notting Hill slumlord....with.....added.....stabbing? I don't know what to say about this book. I am still finishing Ayahs, Lascars and Princes by Rozina Visram, The Boundless Sea by David Abulafia and The Devil that danced on water by Aminatta Forna because these are all physical books and I can't find them amid all the other books in our one bedroom flat (the cats knock them off my bedside table)

I'm failing at reading classic literature this year! Oh my god. I usually have at least one nineteenth century book under my belt. It might be Mavis Gallant's amazing stories of postwar Paris, filled with dislocated Australians, abandoned and precocious children, last-chance emigres, quasi Fascists, washed up art collectors, miserable Calvinists, cunning widows, and anxious German students at protests.

Maggio si avvicina al termine, non senza sussulti. 

Questa settimana novità un po’ dappertutto, da Israele all’Iran, dal Regno Unito alla Germania, fino all’Italia e - perché no, ogni tanto – al calcio. Al solito, un po’ tutto, per tutti. 

Cominciamo subito 👇 

🇮🇱 ISRAELE-HAMAS: IL MANDATO DI ARRESTO PER NETANYAHU, IL RICONOSCIMENTO DELLA PALESTINA E... 

(1) Come da diversi mesi ormai, cominciamo con le ultime novità dalla guerra tra #Israele e #Hamas. Karim Khan, procuratore capo della Corte penale internazionale (ICC), ha richiesto un mandato di arresto per il primo ministro israeliano Benjamin #Netanyahu, il ministro della Difesa israeliano Yoav Gallant e tre leader di Hamas: Yahya Sinwar, Ismail Haniyeh e Mohammed Deif. Khan sostiene che i cinque abbiano commesso crimini di guerra e contro l'umanità durante l'attacco di Hamas del 7 ottobre e la successiva invasione della Striscia di #Gaza da parte di Israele. Le accuse contro i leader di Hamas includono sterminio, omicidio, presa di ostaggi, stupro e violenza sessuale, mentre Netanyahu e Gallant sono accusati di aver provocato sterminio, usato la fame come metodo di guerra e preso di mira i civili. Il ministro degli Esteri israeliano ha definito la richiesta "scandalosa" e ha promesso che Israele combatterà contro di essa. Israele non riconosce la giurisdizione della ICC poiché non ha firmato lo Statuto di Roma del 1998; la decisione ora passa a un collegio di giudici della Corte, che potrebbe impiegare mesi per deliberare, anche se comunque la ICC non ha una forza di polizia propria e dipende dagli stati membri per l'arresto degli imputati. Infatti, se il mandato venisse emesso, Netanyahu e Gallant potrebbero essere arrestati in uno dei 124 paesi firmatari dello Statuto di Roma, sebbene in passato spesso gli stati abbiano ignorato tali mandati. 

Restando all’estero, i governi di Spagna, Irlanda e Norvegia hanno annunciato l’intenzione di riconoscere formalmente lo Stato di #Palestina, conferendogli un significativo valore simbolico e politico. Già a marzo, i leader di Spagna, Irlanda, Malta e Slovenia avevano sottolineato la necessità del riconoscimento per la pace nella regione. La Spagna aveva già approvato una risoluzione in tal senso nel 2014, ma i governi successivi avevano rimandato il riconoscimento in attesa di un consenso europeo. Il primo ministro norvegese Jonas Gahr Støre ha dichiarato che una soluzione duratura in Medio Oriente può essere ottenuta solo attraverso la creazione di due Stati. Il primo ministro spagnolo Pedro #Sánchez ha annunciato che il riconoscimento sarà formalizzato il 28 maggio, criticando le azioni di Israele a Gaza e affermando che il riconoscimento mira a favorire la pace. Anche il primo ministro irlandese Simon Harris ha confermato il riconoscimento per la stessa data, denunciando le condizioni umanitarie a Gaza. In risposta, il ministro degli Esteri israeliano Israel Katz ha richiamato gli ambasciatori da questi paesi, avvertendo che tali decisioni avranno gravi conseguenze. Attualmente, quasi due terzi degli stati membri delle Nazioni Unite riconoscono la Palestina, mentre nell'Unione Europea solo nove paesi lo fanno. Nel 2012, l'Assemblea generale delle Nazioni Unite aveva elevato lo status della Palestina a “stato osservatore non membro”. 

Sul campo cosa sta accadendo invece? Mercoledì, i primi #aiuti umanitari sono stati consegnati alla popolazione di Gaza tramite il molo temporaneo completato dagli Stati Uniti. Nonostante le difficoltà logistiche, gli aiuti, tra cui barrette nutrizionali, alimenti terapeutici per bambini malnutriti e kit igienici, erano stati inizialmente stoccati nei magazzini delle Nazioni Unite. Gli aiuti, partiti da #Cipro, sono stati trasportati a Gaza con un complesso sistema logistico gestito dall’esercito americano e dalle Nazioni Unite. Le operazioni del molo si erano fermate tra domenica e lunedì dopo che sabato alcuni camion erano stati assaltati dalla popolazione. Dopo una revisione logistica, le consegne sono riprese martedì. Finora, 41 camion hanno transitato dal molo, con l’obiettivo di raggiungere i 150 camion al giorno, un quarto del necessario stimato dalle organizzazioni umanitarie, anche se le ispezioni israeliane – mirate a impedire che gli aiuti supportino Hamas – stanno rallentando ulteriormente le consegne. Oltretutto, ieri la Corte internazionale di giustizia ha ordinato a Israele di fermare l'offensiva a #Rafah, dove la situazione è stata descritta come disastrosa. La decisione implica la sospensione immediata delle azioni militari che potrebbero portare alla distruzione fisica della popolazione palestinese. La Corte ha anche chiesto l'apertura del varco di Rafah per l'ingresso di aiuti umanitari e l'accesso a esperti di diritto internazionale, ma Israele probabilmente non rispetterà la decisione, dal momento che considera la sua offensiva come legittima difesa. La decisione è una misura provvisoria nell'ambito di una causa più ampia iniziata dal Sudafrica, che accusa Israele di genocidio. La situazione politica internazionale vede Israele sempre più isolato. 

🇮🇷 INCIDENTE MORTALE PER IL PRESIDENTE DELL’IRAN EBRAHIM RAISI. COSA CAMBIA ADESSO PER IL PAESE? 

2) Il presidente dell'#Iran, Ebrahim #Raisi, è morto domenica in un incidente in elicottero vicino a Jolfa, nella provincia dell’Azerbaigian Orientale. Con lui viaggiavano il ministro degli Esteri Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, il governatore della provincia Malek Rahmati e l’ayatollah Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem. Raisi, presidente dal 2021 e figura ultraconservatrice vicina alla Guida suprema #AliKhamenei, era potenziale successore di quest'ultimo. L'incidente ha suscitato reazioni contrastanti: in molte città iraniane sono stati segnalati festeggiamenti, ma vi sono state anche preghiere pubbliche e la sua morte è stata seguita da condoglianze da parte di leader arabi e milizie sostenute dall'Iran. A nulla sono valse le ricerche portate avanti nonostante le condizioni meteo avverse. La costituzione iraniana prevede la successione temporanea del vicepresidente Mohammad Mokhber, confermato da Khamenei, mentre anche il ministro degli Esteri è stato sostituito temporaneamente. Il Consiglio dei guardiani dell’Iran ha poi annunciato che le elezioni presidenziali si terranno il 28 giugno, mentre sono stati proclamati cinque giorni di lutto nazionale. I candidati alle elezioni potranno presentarsi dal 30 maggio al 3 giugno, e la campagna elettorale inizierà il 12 giugno.   

🇩🇪 ESTREMA DESTRA SOTTO ATTACCO IN GERMANIA. PROCESSI E ALLEANZE FALLITE RALLENTANO LA SCALATA 

3) Voliamo in #Germania, dove molte notizie stanno ruotando intorno a seguaci e membri effettivi dell’estrema destra. Innanzitutto, è iniziato martedì a Francoforte il processo più significativo riguardante il tentativo di un gruppo di estremisti di organizzare un colpo di stato contro il governo tedesco. Gli imputati, arrestati nel dicembre 2022, sono accusati di cercare di istituire una monarchia in Germania. Il processo, uno dei più grandi con accuse di terrorismo nella storia della Germania democratica, coinvolge presunti leader del movimento Reichsbürger e personalità come il principe Heinrich XIII di Reuss e l'ex giudice ed ex deputata del partito di estrema destra Alternative für Deutschland (#AfD), Birgit Malsack-Winkemann. Il movimento Reichsbürger sostiene teorie del complotto, sostenendo che la Germania moderna non sia uno Stato sovrano, ma una società commerciale controllata da poteri internazionali. Gli investigatori affermano che i presunti golpisti pianificavano di prendere d'assalto il #Bundestag a Berlino e arrestare i deputati, mentre il principe Heinrich XIII avrebbe organizzato incontri del gruppo nella Germania orientale e cercato contatti con il governo russo; nello stesso tempo, Malsack-Winkemann avrebbe utilizzato il suo accesso parlamentare per esplorare l'area in vista di un possibile golpe. Il processo è considerato importante per rivelare le connessioni dell'estrema destra in Germania e le sue infiltrazioni nelle istituzioni statali e nella società, visto che l'arresto nel 2022 coinvolse anche ufficiali dell'esercito e della polizia. Non a caso, gli imputati avrebbero avuto accesso a un vasto arsenale di armi e risorse finanziarie considerevoli. 

Tutto ciò avviene con le elezioni #europee in arrivo, e anche qui le novità non si sono fatte attendere. Maximilian Krah, capolista alle elezioni europee per il partito di estrema destra tedesco Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), si è dimesso dal consiglio direttivo del partito e ha annunciato che smetterà di fare campagna elettorale. Le dimissioni seguono le polemiche per alcune sue dichiarazioni sul nazismo, in cui affermava che non tutti i membri delle SS dovrebbero essere considerati automaticamente criminali di guerra, sostenendo la necessità di valutazioni individuali. Queste affermazioni hanno causato una rottura tra AfD e il partito francese #RassemblementNational (RN), che ha dichiarato che non collaborerà con AfD nella prossima legislatura europea. Inoltre, Krah era già al centro di controversie per l'arresto di un suo assistente accusato di spionaggio per conto della Cina e per due indagini preliminari su presunti finanziamenti da parte di Cina stessa e Russia. Nonostante ciò, Krah rimane capolista e probabilmente verrà eletto al Parlamento Europeo, dato il sistema di liste bloccate in Germania. In seguito a tali fatti, il gruppo politico europeo Identità e Democrazia (ID) ha fatto un ulteriore passo e ha deciso di espellere il partito tedesco Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) dal Parlamento Europeo, nonostante le dimissioni di Krah. 

🇬🇧 REGNO UNITO: LUCI SUL PIÙ GRANDE SCANDALO DEL SERVIZIO SANITARIO NAZIONALE. E INTANTO SUNAK... 

4) Passiamo al #RegnoUnito, dove è in corso – probabilmente – il più grande scandalo della storia del Servizio Sanitario Nazionale. Dopo quasi sei anni di indagini, lunedì è stato pubblicato il rapporto finale dell'inchiesta britannica sul #sangue infetto, che ha rivelato lo scandalo delle trasfusioni e dei prodotti ematici contaminati negli anni '70 e '80 nel Regno Unito, considerato il più mortale nella storia del Servizio Sanitario Nazionale. Si stima che circa 3.000 persone siano morte a causa dell'infezione da #HIV ed epatite contratta attraverso queste trasfusioni. Il rapporto critica medici, funzionari pubblici e politici, aprendo la strada a richieste di compensazione che metteranno sotto pressione il governo britannico. Gli attivisti hanno svolto un ruolo chiave nell'istituzione dell'inchiesta nel 2017, tra cui Jason Evans, il cui padre è morto a causa dell'infezione da sangue contaminato. Lo scandalo coinvolgeva il trattamento dell'emofilia con il fattore VIII, importato dagli #StatiUniti dove una grande parte del plasma proveniva da donatori a rischio (in USA le donazioni avvengono dietro compenso), aumentando le possibilità di contaminazione. Nonostante le prime segnalazioni di pericolo negli anni '70 e '80, le autorità hanno continuato a distribuire il trattamento, ignorando le precauzioni e le lezioni del passato. Il governo britannico ha ora accettato di pagare compensazioni, con stime che indicano una spesa finale di circa 10 miliardi di sterline. 

Lo scandalo viene riportato alla superficie in un periodo poco tranquillo in generale per la Gran Bretagna, dal momento che il primo ministro del Regno Unito, Rishi #Sunak, ha annunciato in modo inaspettato che le prossime #elezioni politiche si terranno il 4 luglio, in anticipo rispetto alla data prevista. Sunak, leader del Partito Conservatore al governo da circa 14 anni, ha scelto di anticipare le elezioni, previste per gennaio 2025, probabilmente per capitalizzare i recenti sviluppi positivi dell'economia e aumentare il consenso per il suo partito, che ha affrontato una crisi prolungata. Il primo ministro ha reso noto la data delle elezioni dopo aver annunciato miglioramenti nell'economia, segnalando un cambiamento rispetto agli anni precedenti, segnati da crescente inflazione e costi di vita in aumento, che hanno generato malcontento. Secondo alcune ipotesi, Sunak ha anticipato le elezioni poiché non si prevedono ulteriori miglioramenti economici fino all'autunno, quando in precedenza si pensava che sarebbero state indette. 

È così iniziata la campagna elettorale, ma per Sunak la situazione si è dimostrata subito in salita. Ha dovuto ammettere infatti che alcune misure chiave del suo governo, come il trasferimento dei richiedenti asilo in #Ruanda e il divieto di vendita di sigarette alle nuove generazioni, non saranno attuate prima delle elezioni a causa della chiusura imminente del parlamento. Questa rinuncia ha aumentato le tensioni all'interno del partito Conservatore già sorpreso dalla decisione di Sunak di anticipare le elezioni a luglio. I sondaggi indicano un crescente vantaggio per i Laburisti, con il sostegno per i Conservatori in calo sotto il 20%. Inoltre, 72 dei deputati Conservatori attuali hanno annunciato di non ricandidarsi, un numero significativo che potrebbe influenzare l'esito delle elezioni. Anche dal punto di vista degli eventi, l'inizio di campagna di Sunak ha avuto alcuni problemi, con la rivelazione che due domande "casuali" provenivano da funzionari di partito. Inoltre, Sunak ha commesso una gaffe in un birrificio chiedendo dell'imminente campionato europeo di calcio, dimenticando che il Galles non si è qualificato. Si prevede che il Partito Laburista, guidato da Keir Starmer, vinca nettamente le prossime elezioni, con un vantaggio di circa 20 punti percentuali rispetto al Partito Conservatore, secondo i sondaggi finora condotti. 

🇪🇺 L’ITALIA NON PRENDE POSIZIONE A FAVORE DELLE POLITICHE DI UGUAGLIANZA PER LA COMUNITÀ LGBT+ 

5) Venerdì scorso è emerso che l’#Italia non ha aderito a una dichiarazione del Consiglio dell’Unione Europea volta a promuovere politiche di uguaglianza e rispetto dei diritti umani per la comunità #LGBT+. Questo ha suscitato critiche al governo di Giorgia #Meloni, soprattutto dall’opposizione. La dichiarazione, proposta dalla presidenza belga in occasione della Giornata mondiale contro l’omofobia, la transfobia e la bifobia, è un documento simbolico che ribadisce valori già presenti in trattati europei. L'Italia, insieme ad altri otto paesi, ha scelto di non firmarla, nell’ambito di una decisione vista come politica. Il ministero della Famiglia e delle Pari opportunità ha riferito che la dichiarazione è troppo «sbilanciata sull’identità di genere», simile al contenuto del disegno di legge #Zan, una proposta mai approvata dal parlamento che mirava a includere discriminazioni basate su sesso, genere, orientamento sessuale e disabilità nel Codice penale. La destra ha sempre criticato il ddl Zan, sostenendo che minacciasse la libertà di opinione. La dichiarazione del Consiglio UE invece richiede l’impegno a promuovere l’uguaglianza e combattere la discriminazione, proteggere i #diritti fondamentali delle persone LGBT+ e sostenere l’accettazione sociale. La segretaria del PD, Elly Schlein, ha criticato la decisione del governo, notando che l’anno scorso l’Italia aveva firmato una dichiarazione simile. Anche il Movimento 5 Stelle e Italia Viva hanno espresso critiche, sottolineando come la decisione possa danneggiare la credibilità internazionale dell’Italia. 

⚽ DOPO LA FAMIGLIA ZHANG, L’INTER PASSA AGLI AMERICANI DI OAKTREE. I POSSIBILI SCENARI FUTURI 

6) La proprietà della squadra di calcio dell'#Inter è passata dalla famiglia #Zhang alla società di gestione patrimoniale statunitense #Oaktree Capital Management. Oaktree aveva inizialmente prestato 275 milioni di euro agli Zhang per sostenere le perdite finanziarie dell'Inter nel maggio 2021. Il prestito è cresciuto a 395 milioni di euro con gli interessi al 12% quando è scaduto il 21 maggio e, poiché non è stato restituito, Oaktree è diventata proprietaria del 99,6% delle azioni dell'Inter. Oaktree ha dichiarato di voler garantire la prosperità a lungo termine della squadra, lavorando con l'attuale management per assicurare una crescita finanziaria stabile. Tuttavia, molti esperti ritengono che Oaktree cercherà un acquirente per l'Inter a breve termine per ottenere un profitto. Nel frattempo, sembra che manterrà la dirigenza sportiva attuale. Oaktree possiede anche l'80% del #Caen, una squadra della Ligue 2 francese, ed è diventata così la prima proprietà statunitense dell'Inter. Gli Zhang avevano acquistato l'Inter nel 2016 e durante la loro gestione la squadra ha ottenuto successi significativi, inclusi due Scudetti, due Coppe Italia e tre Supercoppe italiane. La squadra ha anche raggiunto la finale dell'Europa League nel 2020 e la finale di Champions League nel 2023.

💣 Domenica scorsa, i giornali locali del Nord-Est del gruppo NEM hanno riportato una novità nelle indagini sugli attentati del "#Unabomber italiano", attivo tra il 1994 e il 2006 in Veneto e Friuli-Venezia Giulia. La procura di Trieste ha riaperto le #indagini nel gennaio 2023 e ha recentemente trovato tracce di DNA su alcuni vecchi reperti. Questi includono peli su una bomboletta di stelle filanti inesplosa e vari altri ordigni rinvenuti nel 2000 in diverse località. Gli investigatori stanno ora comparando queste tracce di DNA con i profili genetici di undici indagati e altre venti persone che hanno accettato di collaborare. Le indagini sono state riaperte dopo un esposto del giornalista Marco Maisano e due vittime, basato su nuovi elementi trovati nei reperti a #Trieste; successivamente, la procura ha chiesto e ottenuto dal giudice un incidente probatorio per cristallizzare le prove. La diffusione della notizia del DNA è stata criticata dagli avvocati difensori degli indagati. Maurizio Paniz, difensore di Elvo Zornitta, un ingegnere precedentemente indagato, ha espresso preoccupazione per la corretta conservazione dei reperti e il rispetto delle procedure legali, pur accogliendo con favore eventuali progressi nelle indagini. 

🇺🇦 Il mandato presidenziale di Volodymyr #Zelensky è scaduto ufficialmente lunedì, ma rimarrà in carica dato lo stato di guerra che impedisce le elezioni. Questa situazione lo rende politicamente vulnerabile, con una parte dell'opposizione che contesta la sua legittimità e, nello stesso tempo, la #Russia sta cercando di approfittare della situazione per dividere ulteriormente la società ucraina. La questione legale sulle elezioni durante lo stato di guerra è complessa: mentre una legge ordinaria vieta le elezioni, la Costituzione è ambigua. Tuttavia, organizzare elezioni in tempo di guerra è logisticamente difficile, con milioni di ucraini fuori dal paese e problemi di sicurezza. Il dibattito sull'opportunità di tenere elezioni è durato fino all'autunno, ma la maggioranza della popolazione si è espressa contraria. Con il declino del sostegno a Zelensky, l'opposizione sostiene che ora sia privo di un mandato legale e dovrebbe cedere la carica al presidente della Camera. Questa posizione potrebbe guadagnare terreno se il supporto a Zelensky dovesse diminuire ulteriormente. Questa situazione rischia infatti di indebolire Zelensky proprio mentre il governo deve prendere decisioni impopolari durante la guerra, come la mobilitazione militare ed economica.

Hamas rivela: «Preparavamo l'attacco da due anni»

Hamas rivela: «Preparavamo l'attacco da due anni». Il premier israeliano Benyamin Netanyahu ha mostrato al mondo le foto dei bambini carbonizzati da Hamas e di altre atrocità commesse contro il suo popolo nelle scorse ore, promettendo che l'organizzazione terroristica sarà «schiacciata» come è avvenuto con l'Isis. È il sesto giorno di guerra, con la frontiera libanese sempre in ebollizione e con un raid israeliano che ha colpito l'aeroporto di Damasco. Intanto il segretario di Stato Usa Antony Blinken è arrivato a Tel Aviv e ha ammesso che «le immagini di bambini e neonati massacrati, soldati decapitati, ragazzi bruciati vivi, sono al di là di ogni immaginazione. Quasi incomprensibili». In precedenza era stato il ministro della Difesa Yoav Gallant a mostrare i video dell'orrore ai suoi colleghi della Nato a Bruxelles. L'attacco che ha scatenato la guerra e la cattura di oltre 150 ostaggi israeliani, secondo quanto ha dichiarato Ali Baraka, un esponente di Hamas, era in preparazione «da almeno due anni». Ma i Paesi alleati di Hamas, ha assicurato, sono stati informati solo dopo l'inizio dell’assalto. Domani in Israele arriveranno il ministro degli Esteri Antonio Tajani, la collega tedesca Annalena Baerbock, la presidente della Commissione Ue Ursula Von der Leyen e quella dell'europarlamento Roberta Metsola. Poi si sposteranno, come Blinken, ad Amman, per vedere Abu Mazen, capo dell'Autorità Nazionale Palestinese che, incontrando re Abdallah nella capitale giordana, ha condannato «l’uccisione o gli abusi sui civili da entrambe le parti». Il bilancio dei morti, sia in Israele sia a Gaza, sale sempre più. Nello Stato ebraico sono più di 1.300 le vittime e 3.300 i feriti, di cui 28 in condizioni critiche. È salito a 1.537 il bilancio delle vittime negli attacchi israeliani sulla Striscia di Gaza, tra cui 500 bambini e 276 donne, secondo il Ministero della Sanità palestinese. I feriti sono 6.612. «Ho ordinato un assedio completo alla Striscia di Gaza. Non ci sarà elettricità, né cibo, né carburante, tutto sarà chiuso. Stiamo combattendo degli animali umani e agiremo di conseguenza». Queste le parole del ministro della difesa israeliano Yoav Gallant che segnano da ieri l'inizio dell'assedio totale su Gaza. Due milioni e trecentomila persone in 365 chilometri quadrati, una delle aree più densamente popolate del pianeta che da due giorni sta subendo la risposta israeliana all'attacco di Hamas di sabato, da ieri è - nelle parole di Gallant - condannata a patire la fame.

«Chiuderemo tutto» vuol dire punire tutta la popolazione di Gaza per i crimini di Hamas. Significa privare i 900 mila bambini, quasi la metà della popolazione totale, di ogni forma di sostentamento. L'economia della Striscia è dipendente dalle importazioni di forniture, in particolare alimentari, attraverso i valichi di frontiera con Israele ed Egitto, che pure ha fortemente limitato la capacità dei palestinesi di attraversare il confine nel Sud dell'enclave.

Gaza, dunque, sopravvive grazie agli aiuti da sedici anni, da quando Tel Aviv ha imposto il blocco e vietato a quasi tutti i palestinesi di entrare e uscire senza un permesso speciale. Significa che dai valichi entravano (a singhiozzo) cibo, carburante, medicine, e tutti i beni essenziali, significa che dai medesimi valichi non usciva praticamente nessuno.

Da ieri per tutti, persino quella vita, già resa miserabile dalla scarsità degli aiuti, è finita di fronte alla crudezza del "chiuderemo tutto", l'assedio totale, la più lenta azione punitiva delle guerre, la più disumanizzante: chiudere una città già accerchiata, privarla di viveri e rifornimento, piegare milioni di persone che non hanno via d'uscita. Affamare e svilire i civili per punire i miliziani di Hamas che controllano la Striscia. […]

Bloccare l'accesso di cibo e beni è un'arma di aggressione distruttiva al pari delle bombe, che pure da due giorni incessantemente colpiscono Gaza. Bloccare il cibo e l'acqua, il carburante e l'elettricità significa uccidere i già fragili e fiaccare chi sopravvive. Significa dire, a quegli esseri umani, descritti dal ministro Gallant come «animali»: valete meno di noi. Così tanto meno da poter morire di stenti.

Ieri alla seconda notte di bombardamenti su Gaza, Human Rights Watch aveva rilasciato un documento ricordando che le leggi di guerra si applicano a tutte le parti in conflitto, indipendentemente dalla legittimità della loro entrata in guerra o dagli squilibri di potere tra le parti, e sottolineando le norme giuridiche che regolano (o meglio dovrebbero regolare) le ostilità: la presa di mira deliberata di civili da parte di Hamas, gli attacchi indiscriminati sulle aree civili, la cattura di ostaggi costituiscono crimini di guerra ai sensi del diritto umanitario internazionale. Così come costituiscono crimini di guerra l'interruzione dell'elettricità annunciata domenica da parte delle autorità israeliane e diventata ieri blocco totale di ogni bene.

L'assedio annunciato ieri è una punizione collettiva illegale, dunque un crimine di guerra, come recita l'articolo 8 dello Statuto di Roma della Corte Penale Internazionale recita: «Si intende per crimini di guerra: affamare intenzionalmente i civili, come metodo di guerra, privandoli dei beni indispensabili alla loro sopravvivenza, ed in particolare impedire volontariamente l'arrivo dei soccorsi previsti dalle Convenzioni di Ginevra».

L'assedio totale si tradurrà a breve nell'agonia dei neonati ricoverati, dei malati gravi, nell'impossibilità di operare, garantire ossigeno. […] A ieri dopo, due giorni di bombardamenti, sono ottanta i bambini morti a Gaza. Per i nati nella Striscia dopo il 2007 non c'è stata altra vita che quella interna al perimetro del blocco, ai valichi chiusi, alle scuole con le classi di 50 alunni, alle cure non disponibili. Già prima l'accesso i bambini di Gaza non avevano accesso a sufficienti cure mediche. A causa delle restrizioni del governo israeliano sull'ingresso di attrezzature mediche e farmaci nella Striscia, non erano più disponibili né la chemioterapia né i trattamenti radiologici.

Nei primi sei mesi del 2023, 400 bambine e bambini non hanno potuto ricevere le cure mediche di cui necessitavano. Meno di un mese fa, sulla scia dell'escalation di violenza che invase la Striscia tra il 9 e il 13 maggio, Save the Children denunciò che nel solo mese di maggio, quasi 100 richieste per bambini ammalati presentate alle autorità israeliane furono respinte o lasciate senza risposta, e che di media per due bambini al giorno era impossibile avere accesso a interventi chirurgici salvavita.

I bambini di Gaza, i bambini del blocco, sono stati disconnessi dalla realtà esterna mentre quella interna era una quotidiana abitudine alla privazione. Le madri che vediamo nelle fotografie che arrivano da Gaza, che oggi tengono tra le braccia i corpi dei figli feriti, ricordano cosa fosse la Striscia prima che il mondo esterno diventasse un ricordo indistinto, ricordano quando si poteva lasciare Gaza per andare in Egitto liberamente attraverso il valico di Rafah, quando si poteva uscire per essere curati.

Chi è nato prima si è abituato al sacrificio e alla paura. Chi è nato dopo, una generazione di centinaia di migliaia di ragazzini e ragazzine, non ha altro orizzonte che la vita in una gabbia. Senza sogni, né ambizioni. Hanno vissuto il vocabolario dell'odio: isolamento, bombardamenti, negazione dei diritti, discriminazione, pulizia etnica, distruzione, deprivazione sistemica. Hanno vissuto la violenza del blocco e la radicalizzazione di Hamas. Hanno subito tutto e oggi pagano per tutti. […]

About yifu and yizi

It seems there is some confusion because of the English translation of Word of Honor, so I’d like to note that yifu 义父 (how Xie Wang calls Zhao Jing in Chinese) and yizi 义子 (what Xie Wang is in relation to Zhao Jing) are neither father and son, nor even foster father and foster son.

The Chinese word yifu 义父 is often translated as “adoptive father”, or “foster father”, but this is not correct. An adoptive father is yangfu 养父: a person who adopts a child, takes care of their upbringing and daily needs, and performs other duties of a father. Foster father is the same, except in the case of fostering the commitment isn’t permanent.

And yifu is smth like a "named father"(?), or a “sworn father”: a person who, as a sign of great respect, is sort of put on a par with the real father which is a huge deal in a culture based on the Confucian principles: father is the most important and the most respected person in anyone’s life ever. Unlike adoptive father-yangfu, in the case of yifu, various paternal responsibilities are not implied. The keyword is “respect”.

The existence of yifu (and/or "named mother"(?)/”sworn mother” imu 义母) does not mean that yizi has no living parents - same as having godparents in Christianity doesn't mean that the person in question is an orphan.

Baidupedia says that if a person has a sworn brother (结义) then for that person's children, their sworn brother becomes (may become?) yifu.

What do the words yifu 义父 and yizi 义子 actually mean?

Let’s start from the end: 父 - father, 子 - son (in this particular case).

义 yi: 1) justice, righteousness; 2) human ties, relationship. In our case, the 2nd meaning is the one that applies. In word-groups, 义 is often translated as “sworn” or “oath”: 结义兄弟 jiéyì xiōngdì - sworn brothers, oath-brothers, 结义 jiéyì - sworn relationship, 义兄 yìxiōng - older sworn brother, 义侄 yìzhí - son of a sworn brother, “sworn nephew”. 

It can be said that 义 means close social quasi-familial ties that are based on some kind of a two-sided unofficial agreement. 义 isn’t perceived the same as blood ties, or as family ties that arise as a result of adoption. It’s more about how much one looks up to someone else, about adoration, respect, trust, mutual understanding. 

This is a very romantic concept: no wonder many popular pairings are those connected by 义 (most often sworn brothers). When Changgeng in Sha Po Lang reverts to calling Gu Yun yifu in the most intimate moments, this is meant to evoke the feeling of closeness and trust.

义-relationships are a thing of the past and don’t exist in modern China - same as, say, the tradition of sworn brotherhood no longer exists in the West. This gives the concept of 义 a certain flair of romanticism and antiquity. Historically, this type of relationship mostly existed among outlaws and exiles, among people who lived outside the “normal” society: deprived of the protection of state law, they had to resort to other means of protecting themselves, including the creation of an intricate network of social ties.

Over time, the notion of these people and their world hidden from ordinary citizens evolved into the concept of jianghu 江湖, and stories about their exploits gave rise to what can be called proto-wuxia literature (Water Margin, The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants), and later, in the 20th century - classical wuxia.

It is important that 义 is a private, purely unofficial relationship that has no legal status - as opposed to, say, adoption or marriage. From the point of view of the state, 义 doesn’t exist, which can play a role, for example, when splitting inheritance (those connected by 义 can’t inherit each other’s property), when counting family members to determine taxes, or when executing all the relatives of a criminal to several degrees of kinship in the case of high treason.

In Word of Honor, this characteristic of 义 plays a certain role in the plot:

The punishment for high treason in China since ancient times was the extermination of the traitor's family. The degree of kinship depended on the historical era and the severity of treason, but parents were always executed, even in the mildest versions. Xie Wang takes upon himself the risk of cooperating with Jin Wang to overthrow the Emperor: as long as Zhao Jing is only his yifu, in the case of the failure of this conspiracy Zhao Jing isn't in any danger. However, later, Zhao Jing himself sabotages this plan by publicly declaring Xie Wang his son during the feast and giving him his surname: now, if the conspiracy fails, the execution of state traitor Zhao Xie will inevitably entail the execution of his adoptive father Zhao Jing. What Zhao Jing does has greater significance than simply announcing their relationship to the public: Zhao Jing ties himself to Xie Wang’s fate and fulfills his earlier promise to share with him everything, good and bad. That’s why Xie Wang looks so shocked at the feast, that's why he arranges for Zhao Jing the final test with the help of Liu Qianqiao, even though he has already agreed on everything with Wen Kexing. If one doesn’t know about the unofficial status of 义 and about the familial extermination as the usual punishment for high treason in China, then Xie Wang's actions can be attributed to emotionality and indecision, while in fact they are very logical, considering this sudden declaration of sincere attachment by Zhao Jing.

I hope I’ve more or less explained the concept of 义-relationships (to sum up: 1. respect, spiritual closeness; 2. romantic flair of antiquity; 2. unofficial status).

Now, back to yifu and yizi.

In general, yifu is a person who is older than you, whom you respect very much (like your own father), whose advices you listen to. In turn, yifu has the responsibility to be a mentor, a moral guide for his yizi - somewhat similar to godparents in Christianity, except that you can choose yifu yourself when being old enough to make a conscious decision, and not have him assigned by your parents at birth, as (usually) in the case of godparents.

Yifu doesn’t necessarily belong to the same generation as the real father: in the main pairing of Sha Po Lang yifu, Gu Yun, is only 7 years older than his yizi, Changgeng. The age difference just has to be bigger than seems suitable for a sworn brother. 

Also, Changgeng has both parents - a mother and a stepfather. Overall, Sha Po Lang is a nice example that demonstrates that 1) father and yifu are completely different social roles; 2) yifu-yizi relationship isn’t considered incest.

I wonder when Winner is King (the tv adaptation of Sha Po Lang) is finally released, will the English translation also make Changgeng refer to Gu Yun as “Father” instead of “yifu”, as they did with Xie Wang and Zhao Jing in the Netflix translation of Word of Honor?! 

It was even worse in one of the Russian WoH subs where not only yifu was translated as “father”: the translators also made Zhao Jing address Xie Wang as “son” - instead of his name! As a result, viewers thought that Xie Wang is Zhao Jing’s biological son (apparently, from Luo Fumeng). 

In Chinese, Zhao Jing always uses an affectionate form of Xie Wang’s birth name: Xiejieliubo -> Xie’er (like John -> Johnny). He doesn’t call him “son”. 

The English fan subtitles also sometimes substitute “Xie’er” with “son”. Like, what's the point of replacing "My Xie'er" with "My son" in one of their most intense scenes together in Ep. 26? Did the translators try to censor homoeroticism, passing it off as family affection? I fail to see the logic of this change.

The name “Xie’er” 蝎儿 is a diminutive derived from Xie Wang’s national, "southern-barbarian" name - Xiejieliubo 蝎揭留波. The name “Xiejieliubo” has no meaning: the Chinese characters are used only as phonetics to convey sounds of a foreign language. The first character of the name, 蝎, means "scorpion", hence it’s used in the name of the organization "Venomous Scorpions" 毒蝎 and in the nickname (or the title of the leader of the organization) "Xie Wang" 蝎王 - Lord / Prince of Scorpions, Scorpion Prince. The English subtitles translated “Xie’er” 蝎儿 as “Scorpion”, ignoring the fact that it’s 1) a name; 2) a diminutive form of a name, and thus missing an important part of characterization of Xie Wang and Zhao Jing’s relationship.

Another thing that was lost in the translation: when talking to Zhao Jing, Xie Wang uses this very diminutive as a pronoun "I", which is normal for a child but very strange, to put it mildly, for an adult man well into his twenties (close to thirties): such a deliberate infantilism creates an effect ranging from comedy to creepiness. (There are many different ways to say “I” in Chinese, depending on the relationship between the interlocutors, historical era, etc.)

After the adoption, Xie Wang's name changes to "Zhao Xie" 赵蝎. In the series, when publicly declaring Xie Wang his son, Zhao Jing calls him "Zhao Xie'er" 赵蝎儿, however, from what I saw, this is perceived by native speakers as a strange and inappropriate usage of the diminutive. When native Chinese speakers write fanfiction about Xie Wang as Zhao Jing's adopted son, they use the name "Zhao Xie" 赵蝎.

Ok, back to yifu and yizi. To translate yifu as “father” and yizi as “son” is misleading and incorrect. The same goes for “adoptive/foster father” variant: adoption and fostering carry a familial and official relation while 义 doesn’t. Besides, such translations automatically move yizi / yifu into the category of incestuous and “problematic” pairings, while in fact they are not intended to be seen as such (not always, at least, depending on other circumstances): kinky, sure, but not squicky - absolutely not to the father-son incest degree! 

(In terms of kinkiness, I think, yizi / yifu is close to student/teacher, especially since teacher is often treated as a 2nd father: “Teacher for a day - father for life” 一日為師，終身為父 , i.e. you should respect your teacher as your own father. It’s also interesting that in danmei novels the traditional roles are often reversed: the one who irl has more authority because of the seniority and status takes the role of a bottom: Scum Villain Self-Saving System, Erha, Sha Po Lang, etc.)

Perhaps, a better translation for yifu would be smth like “mentor”, or any other polite form of address that can be applied in English to an older and respected male person - but only if for some reason you want to completely avoid any Chinese words in your translation.

The best is to leave these words as yifu and yizi, since there is no adequate English translation anyway.

The expression "Spear as a pillow, awaiting daybreak" (枕戈待旦) has origins in the life of Liu Kun and Zu Huo. While I know a fair bit about Liu Kun, I know scant about Zu Huo. Was he a real person, and if so, what was he known for?

I believe you’re referring to Zu Ti 祖逖, following the collapse of Western Jin, he set himself up as a quasi-warlord in the Qiao region where he attempted to conquer as much northern territory as possible on behalf of Emperor Yuan at Jiankang. He was however later pushed back to Shouchun where he died in 321. As the two main Jin hold-outs in the north, in the view of the Jinshu editors at least, Liu Kun and Zu Ti’s biographies are grouped together in JS062.

Appended to Liu Kun’s biography we find this short section:

Kun as young shouldered aspirations and spirit, and had a talent for persuasion, he was good at associating with those surpassing himself yet was rather frivolous and flaunting. He and Zu Ti of Fanyang were friends, when he heard that Ti had been employed, he sent relatives and friends a letter which said: “At my spear pillow [I] wait for dawn, intending to put on display [the heads] of disobedient miscreants. I often fear Sir Zu will show his whip before me.” His thoughts and spirit assessed expectations like this.

And then at the beginning of Zu Ti’s biography:

[Zu Ti] and the [future] Minister of Works Liu Kun together became Masters of Account for Si province. Their feelings and intimacy were bound closely, they together were sleeping in the same chamber. In the middle of the night, if he heard a reckless cock crow, he would kick Kun awake and say: “This is not a bad sound”, and following that, rise up and dance. Ti and Kun both were of gallant spirit, and sometimes at midnight would rise up and sit, and speak to each other, saying: “If the Four Seas [becomes] a boiling cauldron, and the heroic and outstanding rise up side by side, you and I will be escaping from the Central Plain, that is all.”

The term originates and is still primarily used in regards to Hinduism, specifically Vaishnavism (the branch of the faith dedicated to Vishnu), however it can be applied to religions outside of the Hindu umbrella. The use of the word in English to refer to an online presence was coined by the 1992 sci-fi novel 𝘚𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘊𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘩 by Neal Stephenson, which made use of a variety of religious imagery throughout. 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 The word “Avatar” is constructed from two Sanskrit roots: “ava”, meaning “down” (distantly related to the English “away”) and “tṛ” meaning “across” (distantly related to English “through” and Latin “trans”). Thus the word implies a downwards movement across some kind of boundary, in this case from the realm of the divine to the realm of mankind. The concept predates the word, dating back, in one form or another, at least since the time of the Vedas, the oldest Hindu scripture dating from the 16th to 10th centuries BCE. Predating the word as a noun is a verb form used to describe descent from the heavens. The term is most commonly invoked in regards to Vishnu, the preserving god of the Hindu trinity, though he is not the only god to periodically inhabit mortal bodies. Shiva, the destroyer god of the trinity, also has many avatars, many of whom serve to help avatars of Vishnu (ex. Hanuman, Rama’s monkey companion). To complete the trinity, Brahma the creator also has a number of canon avatars, though interestingly his avatars tend to be the quasi historical authors of great Hindu literature such as Valmiki and Vyasa, authors of the 𝘙𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘢 and 𝘔𝘢𝘩𝘢𝘣𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘢 respectively. 𝗗𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗮 The Dashavatara, literally “ten Avatars”, is an important aspect of Vaishnava faith. To summarize roughly,  across the ages Vishnu has and will send an Avatar ten times when the world is in dire need of his intervention. There are scriptures and traditions that ascribe as many as 20+ avatars to Vishnu, but these ten are considered most vital. There is variance in the list of ten, the one I am going to list is the closest to a “mainstream” version but I will touch upon alternate avatars after. 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘀𝘆𝗮 The first avatar is that of a giant fish or whale. Matsya helps to save and guide Manu when the world is flooded in an account quite similar to the biblical Noah. 𝗞𝘂𝗿𝗺𝗮 The second avatar is a great turtle. When the universe was still young, Indra, king of the gods, contracted a curse that stripped the gods of their great powers and immortality. To regain their powers the gods had to work together with the Asuras (another class of divine being often equated narratively to the Greek Titans) to churn the great ocean of milk into Amrita, the nectar of immortality. To do this they used a great serpent wrapped around a mountain, but the mountain just sunk into the ocean, or would have had the great turtle Kurma not shown up to carry it. For this reason Kurma is sometimes also the turtle upon whose back the whole earth is situated. 𝗩𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗵𝗮 Speaking of carrying the earth, the fourth avatar is a boar, Varaha, who lifted the earth out of the cosmic ocean in a creation myth similar to some Native American “earth diver” myths, wherein some animal must dive below the ocean to bring up mud to create the earth from. 𝗡𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗵𝗮 The fifth avatar is that of a man with a lion head. He was born in order to best the demon Hiranyakashipu. Hiranyakashipu had wreaked havoc uninhibited to due to a blessing that meant he could not be killed during day or night, inside or outside, by any weapon, by a man or animal. Narasimha, being neither man nor animal, takes Narasimha at twilight in the threshold of a courtyard, using his nails (not a weapon). 𝗩𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮 The fifth avatar is a dwarf, not the Norse supernatural entity but a very short human. Like Narasimha, his purpose was to stop a powerful entity, in this case the Asura Mahabali. Mahabali had managed to become king of basically everything. To consolidate his power he held a ceremony, giving out gifts and boons. Vamana asks for only three paces worth of land, which Mahabali gladly grants. Here Vamana utilizes his powers as Vishnu and in three paces covers heaven, earth, and hell. 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗮 The sixth avatar is the warrior Parashurama, literally “Axe-wielding Rama”. His stories generally involve defeating people of the Hindu warrior caste (Kshatriyas) who had used their military might to rule over others, which is not the intended role of the caste. His stories are often used as analogies about the role and nature of violence as a tool of change and control. 𝗥𝗮𝗺𝗮 Rama is the titular character of one of the great Hindu epics, the 𝘙𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘢. This covers the tale of the noble prince Rama and his journey to recover his wife Sita from the demon king Ravana, which he does with help from a race of magically imbued monkey warriors led by the gallant Hanuman. As already mentioned, the 𝘙𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘢 also involved avatars of the other two members of the Hindu trinity: it is written by Valmiki, who is Brahma, and Hanuman is an avatar of Shiva, born specifically to aid Rama. 𝗞𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗻𝗮 Krishna is a major player of another epic, the 𝘔𝘢𝘩𝘢𝘣𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘢. Unlike the noble paragon Rama, Krishna is a mischievous and playful cowherd who becomes the charioteer of the 𝘔𝘢𝘩𝘢𝘣𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘢’s main hero Arjuna. His inclusion as one of the Dashavatara is likely a later addition that syncretizes Buddhism into the greater melting pot of Indian religion. 𝗞𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶 Kalki is the final avatar who has yet to come. Much like the messiahs of the Abrahamic religions he comes at the end of days to defeat the final evil, Kali (not the goddess). He is typically depicted riding a white horse and wielding a flaming sword. As mentioned above, this is not the only list of Dashavatara. The most common alternates exclude either Buddha, as a non-Hindu figure, or Krishna, who is often worshipped as a supreme power in his own right. Peter Jackson’s Cartoon War

When director-producer Peter Jackson’s World War I film, “They Shall Not Grow Old,” which miraculously transforms grainy, choppy black-and-white archival footage from the war into a modern 3D color extravaganza, begins, he bombards us with the clichés used to ennoble war. Veterans, over background music, say things like “I wouldn’t have missed it,” “I would go through it all over again because I enjoyed the service life” and “It made me a man.” It must have taken some effort after the war to find the tiny minority of veterans willing to utter this rubbish. Military life is a form of servitude, prolonged exposure to combat leaves you broken, scarred for life by trauma and often so numb you have difficulty connecting with others, and the last thing war does is make you a man.

Far more common was the experience of the actor Wilfrid Lawson, who was wounded in the war and as a result had a metal plate in his skull. He drank heavily to dull the incessant pain. In his memoirs “Inside Memory,” Timothy Findley, who acted with him, recalled that Lawson “always went to bed sodden and all night long he would be dragged from one nightmare to another—often yelling—more often screaming—very often struggling physically to free himself of impeding bedclothes and threatening shapes in the shadows.” He would pound the walls, shouting “Help! Help! Help!” The noise, my dear—and the people.

David Lloyd George, wartime prime minister of Britain, in his memoirs used language like this to describe the conflict:

… [I]nexhaustible vanity that will never admit a mistake … individuals who would rather the million perish than that they as leaders should own—even to themselves—that they were blunderers … the notoriety attained by a narrow and stubborn egotism, unsurpassed among the records of disaster wrought by human complacency … a bad scheme badly handled … impossible orders issued by Generals who had no idea what the execution of their commands really meant … this insane enterprise … this muddy and muddle-headed venture. …

The British Imperial War Museum, which was behind the Jackson film, had no interest in portraying the dark reality of war. War may be savage, brutal and hard, but it is also, according to the myth, ennobling, heroic and selfless. You can believe this drivel only if you have never been in combat, which is what allows Jackson to modernize a cartoon version of war.

The poet Siegfried Sassoon in “The Hero” captured the callousness of war:

“Jack fell as he’d have wished,” the Mother said, And folded up the letter that she’d read. “The Colonel writes so nicely.” Something broke In the tired voice that quavered to a choke. She half looked up. “We mothers are so proud Of our dead soldiers.” Then her face was bowed.

Quietly the Brother Officer went out. He’d told the poor old dear some gallant lies That she would nourish all her days, no doubt. For while he coughed and mumbled, her weak eyes Had shone with gentle triumph, brimmed with joy, Because he’d been so brave, her glorious boy.

He thought how “Jack,” cold-footed, useless swine, Had panicked down the trench that night the mine Went up at Wicked Corner; how he’d tried To get sent home; and how, at last, he died, Blown to small bits. And no one seemed to care Except that lonely woman with white hair.

Our own generals and politicians, who nearly two decades ago launched the greatest strategic blunder in American history and have wasted nearly $6 trillion on conflicts in the Middle East that we cannot win, are no less egotistical and incompetent. The images of our wars are as carefully controlled and censored as the images from World War I. While the futility and human carnage of our current conflicts are rarely acknowledged in public, one might hope that we could confront the suicidal idiocy of World War I a century later.

Leon Wolff, in his book “In Flanders Fields: The 1917 Campaign,” writes of World War I:

“It had meant nothing, solved nothing, and proved nothing; and in so doing had killed 8,538,315 men and variously wounded 21,219,452. Of 7,750,919 others taken prisoner or missing, well over a million were later presumed dead; thus the total deaths (not counting civilians) approach ten million. The moral and mental defects of the leaders of the human race had been demonstrated with some exactitude. One of them (Woodrow Wilson) later admitted that the war had been fought for business interests; another (David Lloyd George) had told a newspaperman: ‘If people really knew, the war would be stopped tomorrow, but of course they don’t—and can’t know. The correspondents don’t write and the censorship wouldn’t pass the truth.’

There is no mention in the film of the colossal stupidity of the British general staff that sent hundreds of thousands of working-class Englishmen—they are seen grinning into the camera with their decayed teeth—in wave after wave, week after week, month after month, into the mouths of German machine guns to be killed or wounded. There is no serious exploration of the iron censorship that hid the realities of the war from the public and saw the press become a shill for warmongers. There is no investigation into how the war was used by the state, as it is today, as an excuse to eradicate civil liberties. There is no look at the immense wealth made by the arms manufacturers and contractors or how the war plunged Britain deep into debt with war-related costs totaling 70 percent of the gross national product. Yes, we see some pictures of gruesome wounds, digitalized into color, yes, we hear how rats ate corpses, but the war in the film is carefully choreographed, stripped of the deafening sounds, repugnant smells and most importantly the crippling fear and terror that make a battlefield a stygian nightmare. We glimpse dead bodies, but there are no long camera shots of the slow agony of those dying of horrific wounds. Sanitized images like these are war pornography. That they are no longer jerky and grainy and have been colorized in 3D merely gives old war porn a modern sheen.

“When the war was not very active, it was really rather fun to be in the front line,” a veteran says in the film. “It was a sort of outdoor camp holiday with a slight spice of danger to make it interesting.”

Insipid comments like that defined the perception of the war at home. The clash between a civilian population that saw the war as “a sort of outdoor camp holiday” and those who experienced it led to profound estrangement. The poet Charles Sorley wrote: “I should like so much to kill whoever was primarily responsible for the war.” And journalist and author Philip Gibbs noted that soldiers had a deep hatred of civilians who believed the lies. “They hated the smiling women in the streets. They loathed the old men. … They desired that profiteers should die by poison-gas. They prayed to God to get the Germans to send Zeppelins to England—to make the people know what war meant.”

Military studies have determined that after 60 days of continuous combat, 98 percent of those who survive will have become psychiatric casualties. The common trait among the 2 percent who were able to endure sustained combat was a predisposition toward “aggressive psychopathic personalities.” Lt. Col. David Grossman wrote: “It is not too far from the mark to observe that there is something about continuous, inescapable combat which will drive 98 percent of all men insane, and the other 2 percent were crazy when they got there.”

The military cliques in American society are as omnipotent as they were in World War I. The symbols of war and militarism, then and now, have a quasi-religious aura, especially in our failed democracy. Our incompetent generals—such as David Petraeus, whose surges only prolonged the Iraq War and raised the casualty figures and whose idea to arm “moderate” rebels in Syria was a debacle—are as lionized as the pig-headed and vainglorious Gen. Douglas Haig, the British commander in chief, who resisted innovations such as the tank, the airplane and the machine gun, which he called “a much overrated weapon.” He believed the cavalry would play the decisive role in winning the war. Haig, in the Battle of the Somme, oversaw 60,000 casualties on the first day of the offensive, July 1, 1916. None of his military objectives were achieved. Twenty thousand lay dead between the lines. The wounded cried out for days. This did not dampen Haig’s ardor to sacrifice his soldiers. Determined to make his plan of bursting through the German lines and unleashing his three divisions of cavalry on the fleeing enemy, he kept the waves of assaults going for four months until winter forced him to cease. By the time Haig was done, the army had suffered more than 400,000 casualties and accomplished nothing. Lt. Col. E.T.F. Sandys, who saw 500 of his soldiers killed or wounded on the first day at the Somme, wrote two months later, “I have never had a moment’s peace since July 1st.” He then shot himself to death in a London hotel room. Joe Sacco’s illustrated book “The Great War,” a 24-foot-long wordless panorama that depicts the first day of the Battle of Somme, reveals more truth about the horror of war than Jackson’s elaborate restoration of old film.

Jackson closes the film with an army ditty about prostitution. “You might forget the gas and shell,” the song goes, “but you’ll nev’r forget the Mademoiselle! Hinky-dinky, parlez-vous?”

Tens of thousands of girls and women, whose brothers, fathers, sons and husbands were dead or crippled, and whose homes often had been destroyed, became impoverished and often homeless. They were easy prey for the brothels, including the military-run brothels, and the pimps that serviced the soldiers. There is nothing amusing or cute about lying on a straw mat and being raped by as many as 60 men a day, unless you are the rapist.

“Give sorrow words,” William Shakespeare reminded us, “The grief that does not speak whispers the o’erfraught heart and bids it break.”

It is fortunate all the participants in the war are dead. They would find the film another example of the monstrous lie that denied their reality, ignored or minimized their suffering and never held the militarists, careerists, profiteers and imbeciles who prosecuted the war accountable. War is the raison d’être of technological society. It unleashes demons. And those who profit from these demons, then and now, work hard to keep them hidden.

Novembre entra nel vivo e lascia dietro di sé strascichi importanti.

Questa settimana torniamo dritti sulla questione Israele-Hamas con gli ultimi aggiornamenti, per poi saltare un po’ qui e lì, tra Italia, USA e Spagna.

🇮🇱 ISRAELE-HAMAS: SI COMBATTE INTORNO E DENTRO GLI OSPEDALI. L’ESERCITO ISRAELIANO AVANZA

(1) Il conflitto tra #Israele e #Hamas continua a tenere il mondo con il fiato sospeso. Gli schieramenti combattono sempre più spesso vicino agli ospedali, al cui interno secondo l’esercito israeliano sono nascosti i centri operativi dei terroristi di Hamas da neutralizzare. Dentro gli ospedali però si rifugiano anche tutti coloro che non sono ancora riusciti a scappare dalla #Striscia di Gaza per svariati motivi, trasformandosi – involontariamente – in uno scudo umano in risposta agli attacchi di Israele. Si tratta di migliaia di persone, tra le quali troviamo anche centinaia di pazienti ormai quasi impossibilitati a ottenere le cure di cui hanno bisogno. La mancanza di carburante (ne sono arrivate solo poche centinaia di litri) e, più in generale, di elettricità fa in modo che solo pochissime unità possano essere utilizzate per prestare soccorso a chi ha bisogno. Domenica scorsa l’esercito israeliano ha aiutato il personale dell’ospedale #alShifa a evacuare decine di neonati in pericolo di vita, dopo che il reparto di terapia intensiva neonatale ha smesso di funzionare. Intorno però proseguono bombardamenti e attacchi che hanno reso difficile ogni genere di evacuazione. Sempre domenica in #Francia si è tenuta una gigantesca manifestazione contro gli attacchi e gli episodi antisemiti che hanno riguardato nelle ultime settimane la comunità ebraica. Le persone presenti tra Parigi, Marsiglia e Strasburgo superavano le 100.000 unità e alle proteste hanno partecipato anche quasi tutte le forze politiche locali (ma non il presidente Emmanuel Macron, che ha mandato un messaggio di supporto). In serata il ministro della Difesa israeliano Gallant ha fatto sapere come – in base a quanto emerso dalle informazioni inviategli dall’esercito – Hamas avrebbe perso il controllo della città di Gaza e che la conquista totale di quest’ultima sarebbe stata imminente. A preoccupare Israele è però la situazione economica derivata dalla guerra con Hamas, dal momento che sembrano pronto a esaurirsi le risorse finanziarie destinate al conflitto e il ministro delle Finanze Bezalel Smotrich è parecchio restio a utilizzare le risorse destinate alle comunità ebraiche ultraortodosse (i cui interessi sono particolarmente importanti per l’attuale esecutivo). Tornando alla questione relativa agli ospedali di #Gaza, mercoledì l’esercito israeliano ha fatto irruzione nell’ospedale al Shifa nell’ambito di un’operazione mirata contro Hamas. Per lungo tempo non sono state diffuse notizie certe su cosa stesse accadendo, anche se i militari hanno fatto sapere di aver trovato armi e un centro di comando operativo di Hamas. Sembra che l’esercito stia anche evacuando più persone possibili dalla struttura. Non è tutto. Pare che sia stata anche trovata l’entrata di un tunnel sotterraneo usato dai miliziani di Hamas per entrare e uscire dall’ospedale indisturbati; il suddetto tunnel è stato mostrato in video, ma non è ancora stato verificato come sia stato usato e dove conduca. Inoltre è stato riportato – sempre dall’esercito israeliano e sempre nei dintorni dell’ospedale al Shifa – il corpo di una delle oltre 200 persone tenute in ostaggio da Hamas, alimentando le motivazioni che hanno spinto i militari ad agire. Nel frattempo il Consiglio di Sicurezza delle Nazioni Unite (l’organo più importante dell’#ONU) ha approvato una risoluzione per richiedere pause e corridoi umanitari per la popolazione di Gaza. Su quindici paesi votanti, solo 3 si sono astenuti (Russia, USA e Regno Unito).

🇮🇹 ITALIA: IN DISCUSSIONE UN NUOVO DECRETO SICUREZZA. OK AL DIVIETO ALLA CARNE SINTETICA. LA CHIESA…

(2) Qualche notizia sparsa dall’#Italia, nello specifico due provvedimenti e un report molto importante. Partiamo dal nuovo pacchetto #sicurezza, che contiene 3 disegni di legge al suo interno: il primo aumenta le tutele per le forze dell’ordine; il secondo il riordino della polizia locale; il terzo alcuni inasprimenti di pena e l’introduzione di due nuovi reati (rivolta in carcere e blocco stradale, che attualmente è solo un illecito amministrativo). In quest’ultimo caso il riferimento è alle frequenti proteste delle associazioni ambientaliste. Un passaggio che ha fatto particolarmente discutere vede i membri delle forze dell’ordine autorizzati ad avere un’arma diversa, senza licenza, oltre la pistola d’ordinanza quando non sono in servizio. Inoltre, verrebbero inasprite pene per minacce, violenze e lesioni nei confronti degli agenti. In caso di approvazione saranno aumentate da 2 a 6 anni le pene per chi truffa le persone anziane, oltre che sanzioni per chi fa uso di minori per chiedere l’elemosina (senza più il differimento della pena per donne incinte o madri di figli fino a 3 anni). Un altro disegno di legge è stato approvato alla Camera in via definitiva, con 159 voti favorevoli su 236 totali, riguarda la produzione e la vendita della carne coltivata (anche conosciuta come “sintetica”), ora vietata del tutto. L’Italia sarà il primo paese europeo a introdurre una norma simile, che avrebbe potuto ridurre l’impatto ambientale derivato dagli allevamenti intensivi. Infine chiudiamo con il nuovo report prodotto dalla Conferenza episcopale italiana (#CEI) a tema abusi sessuali e pedofilia nella #Chiesa italiana. Una prima parte era già stata pubblicata nel novembre 2022 e conteneva alcuni casi avvenuti tra il 2020 e il 2021 segnalati proprio alla Chiesa. Questa seconda parte analizza i casi del 2022, ma si tratta di un numero parecchio esiguo per via della scarsa volontà a coinvolgere la Chiesa per denunciare gli abusi. 108 centri di ascolto per la tutela dei minori delle diocesi hanno preso parte all’indagine, ma solo 38 di questi hanno segnalato uno o più casi di presunte vittime (54 in questa circostanza). Sono per la maggior parte minori tra i 15 e i 18 anni ad aver subito abusi e in generale le presunte vittime sono in netta prevalenza femminile (44). I centri di ascolto, secondo quanto emerge, sarebbero comunque stati usati più per chiedere informazioni che per essere effettivamente utili per presentare denunce.

🇺🇸 PRIMA VISITA IN USA PER XI JINPING DAL 2017: TENTATIVI AVVIATI PER FUTURE COOPERAZIONI

(3) In settimana è andata in scena anche la prima visita negli #StatiUniti dal 2017 del presidente cinese #XiJinping, che ha incontrato l’omologo americano #JoeBiden a San Francisco nell’ambito della riunione dell’#APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, ovvero l’organizzazione che al suo interno unisce paesi affacciati sul Pacifico). C’era molta attesa per l’incontro, durato circa 4 ore. #Cina e Stati Uniti hanno concordato nel ristabilire le comunicazioni militari interrotte nell’agosto 2022, quando l’allora speaker della Camera Nancy Pelosi aveva visitato Taiwan (isola che la Cina da anni rivendica). Biden ha affermato che i due presidenti torneranno anche a sentirsi telefonicamente qualora fosse necessario. Un provvedimento degno di nota ha riguardato la riduzione dell’esportazione da parte della Cina di sostanze impiegate nell’incontrollata produzione (e il consumo) di fentanyl negli Stati Uniti, mentre non è stato fatto alcun passo avanti per il suddetto problema di Taiwan. Biden si è comunque ritenuto soddisfatto dell’incontro, nell’ottica di una possibile futura cooperazione priva di conflitti. Intanto in USA, sia Camera che Senato hanno evitato nuovamente lo #shutdown, ovvero la chiusura parziale delle attività del governo federale. Se nel primo caso si è dovuto ricorrere a un accordo piuttosto discusso tra Democratici e Repubblicani (che detengono la maggioranza alla Camera), al Senato l’approvazione è stata più semplice e lineare, spostando ora il prossimo termine al 19 gennaio, quando gli schieramenti discuteranno di una norma per finanziare l’intero 2024. Al provvedimento manca solo la firma del presidente Joe Biden.

🇪🇸 PEDRO SÁNCHEZ ANCORA PREMIER IN SPAGNA. MAGGIORANZA RAGGIUNTA GRAZIE AGLI INDIPENDENTISTI

(4) Salto rapido (finale) in #Spagna, dove il parlamento ha dato la fiducia a #PedroSánchez, premier uscente e adesso nuovamente a capo dello stato iberico. È stato eletto alla prima votazione con maggioranza assoluta (179 voti su 350). Dal 2018 è a capo del governo spagnolo, ma mai come questa volta si trova a guidare un esecutivo dalla maggioranza risicata, dal momento che il suo partito (#PSOE, Partito Socialista Spagnolo) non è stato il più votato. Nonostante tutto, nessuna figura oltre la sua è emersa come capace di poter guidare la Spagna con una maggioranza tale da poter resistere alla prima fiducia. Sánchez è riuscito a mettere d’accordo, non senza fatica, diversi partiti autonomisti e indipendentisti, ognuno interessato a raggiungere specifici obiettivi per le regioni che rappresenta. Tra questi spicca #Junts per Catalunya, il partito indipendentista catalano guidato da Carles #Puigdemont, che ha ottenuto in cambio del supporto un disegno di legge per concedere l’amnistia a tutti coloro che parteciparono al referendum per l’#indipendenza della Catalogna del 2017 (previo ok del parlamento). I deputati di Junts, pur essendo solo 7, sono stati fondamentali per raggiungere la maggioranza necessaria a dare la fiducia al nuovo governo. Non tutti sono però favorevoli a concedere l’amnistia agli attivisti catalani, specialmente a destra, convinti che l’iniziativa violi la Costituzione e che comunque possa portare a nuove possibili azioni da parte degli indipendentisti.

C'est le moment d'aller fouiller dans ma liste de lecture à la recherche des EP, mini-albums et autres démos: voici donc les Brefs du samedi, une rubrique consacrée aux albums courts qui sont difficile à chroniquer en trois cents mots et plus, mais qui sont sympas quand meme. Dans cette édition, du black-metal avec Catobodua, du metal progressif avec Meridian4 et du prog éclectique avec The Odd Gallant.

Catobodua, c’est à la limite de l’erreur de casting: je me suis fait refilé l’EP de ce groupe français de black-metal sur la promesse que ça ressemblait à du Saor. Sur ce point, j’ai été déçu. Catobodua est un groupe qui fait ce qui, je suppose, est du black-metal des plus classiques. Les vocaux sont en français, ce qui n’est pas très évident, vu que c’est du growl-scream typique du genre.

L’EP ne compte que trois pistes, mais il arrive tout de même à la durée respectable de vingt-trois minutes. Les compositions sont longues et étonnamment mélodiques. Enfin, je dis « étonnamment » mais c’est peut-être quelque chose qui est tout à fait normal pour du black-metal. Quoi qu’il en soit, j’ai trouvé cet EP écoutable et même plutôt cool. Je ne sais pas trop s’il est typique du genre, mais j’ai bien aimé.

Meridian4 est un jeune groupe belge qui m’a contacté pour me présenter sont premier EP, Collateral. Leur musique explore une zone qui se situe entre power-metal, metal symphonique et metal progressif. Je n’irais pas jusqu’à dire « comme tout le monde », mais il faut avouer que ce ne sont pas les seuls sur ce créneau. Ils se distinguent par un chant féminin lyrique et des influences orientalisantes.

Collateral compte cinq titres et dure un poil plus de trente minutes. Il bénéficie d’une production plutôt propre, qui met bien en valeur la qualité des musiciens qui composent Meridian4. Pour un premier EP, c’est carré. C’est également assez prévisible, au niveau des compositions. Il y a de belles choses, notamment « The Consecration », le quasi-epic de l’album (neuf minutes), mais ça reste très classique.

Terminons cette chronique avec Official One, EP du projet The Odd Gallant. The Odd Gallant, c'est le musicien français, Guillaume Cazenave, dont j'avais chroniqué l'album AM et qui a eu la gentillesse de m'envoyer son album en service presse. C'est un projet dont le nom colle bien avec son style de rock progressif déjanté: bizarre et plutôt courageux.

En quatre pistes et un peu moins d'une demi-heure, The Odd Gallant mélange rock progressif, blues, jazz et électro. Quand on n'aime pas, on dira que c'est bordélique; je préfère le terme "éclectique". Alors certes, ce n'est pas mon style de prog préféré, mais on ne peut pas reprocher à Official One son manque d'originalité et, somme toute, ça s'écoute plutôt bien.

Okay, yeah, so sue me xD This comes right after "Snow Time". The song Kurt skates to is "I Need Your Love" by Shaggy, and this is the outfit he's wearing.

“So, did you see him before he went to the back to get ready?” Blaine asks, trying, from the bleachers, to peek over the wall that separates the ice from the staging area.

“Yeah,” Sebastian says, doing the same thing. He’s got a few inches on Blaine, and he can feel smug about that, but it’s not helping him. From their seats, they can’t see anything but a few other volunteers, and the last two performers making their way to the bleachers.

“And how did he look? Was he nervous?”

“Nah, he’s got this. I mean, he’s been here all day helping out. And it’s just a recital, not a competition. I don’t think he’s too nervous.”

Sebastian doesn’t want to be talking about this with Blaine. He wants to sit alone and fantasize while his handsome boyfriend dominates the ice. But now, he’s sulking. He’s making nice-nice with Mr. Sex-on-a-Stick for Kurt’s sake, though it burns him to the core that Blaine Anderson isn’t actually that bad a guy. In fact, outside of Kurt, Sebastian and Blaine actually have a few things in common. Some of the music Blaine likes that Kurt doesn’t, Sebastian does. Same with movies, video games, and a few TV shows. And regardless of Sebastian’s insecurities, Blaine is not trying to steal his boyfriend away from him.

But Sebastian is still miffed he’s here because Blaine Anderson is, unintentionally, showing Sebastian up.

Blaine is wearing his signature leather jacket over a crisp, clean, red polo, indigo jeans sliding into black Magnum boots, the tops of which he’s opted to keep stylishly untied. In his hand he’s holding a single white rose – a present for Kurt, which he was gallant enough to run by Sebastian first to make sure it was okay, promising on pain of a toe pick to the groin that he wouldn’t say word one to Kurt if Sebastian said no.

Yup, Blaine Anderson is a stand-up guy … the ass.

Sebastian, on the other hand, barely had time to get out of his hockey gear before racing across to this rink because practice went too long. He’s still wearing his padded compression shirt and his hockey pants even though he brought a change of clothes with him. Unfortunately, they’re still on their hanger in the locker room while he’s sitting, mildly sweaty, beside a boy who looks like a GAP model and smells like an Armani ad.

“What was he wearing?” Blaine asks, completely oblivious to Sebastian’s plight. “The blue outfit or the red?”

“He was wearing the blue one earlier,” Sebastian says, annoyed that Blaine has this level of involvement in Kurt’s life that Kurt discussed costume choices with him, “but he might have changed seeing as there was … uh … a small incident … involving snow.”

“I see.” Blaine smirks, which infuriates Sebastian. He has a feeling that, at some point during the day, Blaine Anderson found out exactly what happened to the pant leg of Kurt’s blue costume. “And you haven’t seen his routine yet?”

“No. He wouldn’t let me watch him practice. He said it was a surprise.” Sebastian gets a venomous thought and asks through grinding teeth, “Have you seen it?”

“Nope. He wouldn’t show me, either. He said if I wanted to see it, I’d have to come here.”

“And you came. Yay,” Sebastian mutters, and a chuckling Blaine bumps him with his shoulder.

The lights lower, a signal to the audience that the next performance is about to begin.

“Ladies and gentlemen! The management, coaches, and instructors at the Westerville Ice-plex would like to thank you for attending this year’s Spring Hop, showcasing some of the best students that our award winning skate school has to offer!”

Applause rises up from the audience, along with a few whistles, but Sebastian rolls his eyes. He hates the salesmanship of it all, but that’s how the skate school runs. These recitals should be a chance for the kids to strut their stuff whether they’re competitive skaters or not, but the reality is that without new students coming in, the skate school doesn’t run. So every opportunity they have to sell people on it, they take it.

Kurt’s performance will be no exception.

And the rink will get their money’s worth since he’s the one everyone in the stands is waiting to see.

Most performers only get a minute to perform, two minutes tops, but longer slots were reserved at the end for a handful of exhibition performances by top tier skaters. This would be the time Sebastian would be performing if he’d opted to participate. The last slot went to Kurt.

And the bleachers are packed.

“Now, for our final performance of the day, skating to a song he’s dedicating to his boyfriend, Westerville Ice-plex’s own premier junior hockey coach and six time gold medalist, Sebastian Smythe …”

A spotlight finds Sebastian in the audience and lights him up, and Sebastian’s face goes white.

“What the …?” he mumbles past a forced smile, raising a hand to wave to the clapping audience. Sebastian isn’t upset at being outed. If anyone from here to Timbuktu doesn’t know he’s gay and that he and Kurt are dating, then they’re blind and stupid. It was announced on national TV, for corn’s sake. And he had a feeling that Kurt would be dedicating his performance to him. Kurt had to have given his permission for that announcement to be made. He just didn’t think that the Westerville Ice-plex would be progressive enough to make that kind of a statement, especially in front of this large a crowd.

The fact that no one is booing or leaving makes Sebastian a bit emotional.

“It’s Pride Month, Smythe.” Blaine snickers, giving him a shove. “Salute or something. Represent.”

“Oh, I’ll represent.” Sebastian raises his other hand to give Blaine a completely different type of salute, but Blaine intercepts it. A second later, the spotlight returns to the ice.

“… put your hands together for premier junior skating coach and eight time gold medalist in singles and dance team, Mr. Kurt Hummel!”

“Wow. They don’t give us intros like that over at our rink.” Blaine says, applauding. “That was a little over-the-top, wasn’t it?”

“Yeah, but he deserves it.”

Blaine nods. “That he does.”

Sebastian applauds till his hands sting as he attempts to outdo Blaine, but he almost misses his hand and smacks Blaine in the face when Kurt takes to the ice, circling with arms raised and garnering louder applause.

When Sebastian glances over at Blaine, the boy looks just as stunned as he does.

“Uh, have you seen that costume before?”

Sebastian has to swallow before he can answer. “N-no. Have you?”

“Nu-uh.”

Both the blue costume and the red one, which Kurt had modeled for Sebastian days ago, were rhinestone embellished and tighter than healthy, as is Kurt’s signature style in fashion on and off the ice. But both of those costumes are relatively tame compared to this.

What Kurt is wearing – skintight black pants and a sheer, long-sleeve shirt, the front a panel of black lace with a low-cut V-neck – is positively criminal.

Kurt sets up in the center of the ice, knee bent and arms raised, fingers covering his eyes in a Madonna-esque “Vogue” sort of way. The music starts, the sultry rhythm filling the rink, and Kurt begins to move.

A hand through his hair, a sway of his hips, and the most seductive backward spin Sebastian has ever seen Kurt perform has the crowd in an uproar, but Sebastian doesn’t cheer with them … because he can’t pick his jaw up off the floor.

“Sebastian Smythe” - Blaine clamps a hand on Sebastian’s shoulder and, for the first time, Sebastian doesn’t shrug him off - “you are one lucky man.”

“Yes. Yes, I am,” he says. In more ways than one. Because Kurt’s skintight outfit and his gorgeous body aren’t the extent of his worthwhile attributes, neither is his incredible talent. Sebastian is lucky because Kurt is smart as a whip, witty, and fun. He can hold his own, he’s confident, he’s loyal.

He’s compassionate, loving, and amazingly forgiving.

Sebastian he can’t discredit the costume altogether, or the talented boy who designed and made it since that is Kurt as well. Kurt makes all of his costumes – another little tidbit that Sebastian discovered that makes him admire Kurt even more.

Kurt’s first jump combination goes far towards not only showcasing his strength and supernatural flexibility, but also the expert fit of his pants, and Sebastian feels his own clothes become uncomfortable.

He isn’t sure he’ll be able to convince Kurt to keep that costume on during their scheduled make-out session, but he sure as hell plans to try.
