I’ve met so many incredible little boys who are considerate, sensitive, empathetic, kind, intelligent and creative. And then I see grown men who are garbage people who don’t know how to do a damn thing for themselves. And it’s like, I’m sure some of y’all were the types of children that were very pleasant and fun to be around but there has to be a time when those little boys start to learn toxic masculinity and change.

It must start around middle school or something because my little brother was annoying when he was a kid, but then he starts hanging out with a group of boys he met through the school basketball team and he suddenly became significantly more of a gremlin than before. He stopped doing art in middle school because he thought it wasn’t cool. And that sucks cuz my brother loved to make art and he was (probably still is if he put his mind to it) good at art. Toxic masculinity crushes little boy’s and young men’s souls. Even and especially if they’re queer and coming into their queerness surrounded by toxic masculinity.

I just wonder, like, as a parent, how will I be able to keep my kids away from all this harmful media?? I won’t even have the ability to know what my child is exposed to out of my house let alone be able to have critical conversations about it. Thinking about raising a child is so exciting but also fucking terrifying.

My mobility issues often make things like styling hair impossible. With four kids I need easy. With my heart I need comfort and beauty. It’s a hard balance. My kids/health/isolation make trips to a salon unlikely (it’s been almost three years for me now) so I’ve learned to do my own cuts. So far, this is the easiest and most fun. I’ve been shaving various parts of my head for the better part of 27 years (my mom thought it was a fad... haha.) I finally realized I prefer growing the top, which now reaches my waist) and feel best when the rest is very, very short. This helps me keep it clean while producing lovely knots like this. My #disability provides the landscape I must traverse but I get to decide how I move through it and what I create with what I’ve been given on the journey.
