"My Name is Calvin: A Queer Refugee's Journey from Uganda , kenya and to South Sudan"

Hey Tumblr fam, my name is Calvin, and I'm here to share my story with you all. I'm a queer refugee from Uganda, and for nearly five years, I called Kakuma refugee camp home. Life there was a mix of triumphs and persecutions, but earlier this year, I relocated to Gorom refugee camp in South Sudan.

My journey hasn't been easy. The Kenyan government, through the Department of Refugee Affairs, deliberately refused to recognize me. In December last year, they made it clear that they would no longer host LGBTQ refugees, leading to arrests and imprisonment of many like me. Eventually, I found my way to Gorom, along with nearly 300 other transgender, gay, and lesbian individuals.

But the challenges persist. In Gorom, we face suspicion from the local Sudanese community, who have begun to identify us as homosexuals. Moreover, basic needs like food security and adequate housing are scarce, as UNHCR Sudan struggles to keep up with the increasing number of LGBTQ refugees.

Migranti LGBT: ascoltare per non discriminare

Il Circolo Tondelli LGBTI invita ad una serata di storytelling sull’esperienza di migrazione di un giovane ragazzo LGBT dall’Africa al nostro territorio del bassanese.

Una testimonianza che vuole essere innanzitutto un’opportunità di conoscenza sulle motivazioni e sulle condizioni che motivano a compiere la scelta di lasciare e/o fuggire dal proprio paese. Un confronto che vuole offrire un contributo alla cultura della solidarietà e dell’accoglienza per porre un argine al crescente razzismo e ai sentimenti di paura che l’accompagnano.

Appuntamento per giovedì 22 marzo 2018, ore 21:00, in Via Museo 67 a Bassano del Grappa (VI).

Nel corso degli ultimi anni alle porte del servizio di supporto e di accoglienza del Circolo Tondelli LGBTI di Bassano del Grappa, hanno bussato, in cerca di aiuto, un numero crescente di ragazzi LGBT provenienti dall’Africa , dai paesi dell’Est e del Medio Oriente.

Sono ragazzi che ci hanno aiutato ad aprire gli occhi sulla realtà del fenomeno migratorio; sulla scarsa conoscenza che si ha della reale dimensione di questo fenomeno e sulla gestione non sempre ottimale che viene attuata spesso a scapito di queste persone.

La maturata consapevolezza della situazione di potenziale violazione dei diritti umani di queste persone, ci ha portati alla creazione di un specifico Servizio di Supporto e Advocacy per i Rainbow Refugees del territorio.

Un servizio che ha già accompagnato una decina di rifugiati e che ci ha permesso di costruire una rete di collaborazioni con enti ed ong, italiane ed europee, operanti nel settore.

Per i rifugiati LGBT il mondo può essere un posto pericoloso e il pensiero di cercare un rifugio sicuro è tutto fuorché una favola. Ancora oggi ben 77 paesi criminalizzano i rapporti tra persone dello stesso sesso. In molti di loro, la prigione è la pena che li attende. In altri, incombe pure il rischio della pena di morte.

I rifugiati LGBT sono persone, spesso molto giovani, che stanno sfuggendo da persecuzioni, violenze e aggressioni sessuali. Ma fuggono anche dalle violenze delle forze di polizia e da una legislazione che considera illegale essere gay. Stanno scappando pure dai loro amici e dalle loro stesse famiglie che di sovente diventano violente, li sfrattano e li bandiscono dalle loro comunità.

Quelli che possono, cercano di trovare luoghi e paesi più sicuri e ciò comporta altri pericoli. I rifugiati LGBT non sono come gli altri rifugiati. Sono visti come emarginati e affrontano discriminazioni e persecuzioni per mano di altri rifugiati nei centri di accoglienza e d’identificazione. Alcuni sono sfrattati dai centri a seguito di discriminazione sociale e culturale.

Sono situazioni drammatiche: immagina di dover fuggire dal tuo paese e poi dover scappare dal luogo che pensavi ti avrebbe accolto e protetto!

Dobbiamo veramente aprire gli occhi su ciò che sta accadendo a questi nostri amici LGBT.
