If I had to sum up in one sentence why I love Heroes (2024) so much it's because, as I mentioned to @silviakundera - Liu Yuning plays the best swordsman in China. In 1911.

His skill, just as his whole way of life, is about to be obsolete.

If you think about it, it's the equivalent of being the accountant fastest with the abacus - a lot of skill, a lot of time to get to that skill and utterly pointless by now.

He has spent his whole life honing it, he's given up everything for it and the sect way of life, including the woman he loves and for what? He's winning his sword battles against opponents also largely armed with swords but this is the last gasp of that sort of thing.

He's peerless, he's unparalleled, and a squad of peasants with modern for the era guns who have never seen a sword can take him out.

It's like the sect thing - there is a reason they are all starving thugs for hire instead of respected and admired - this is a dying way of life. This is not the world that respects sects or even the imperial family (the country as the dynasty is vvvv much Qin Jun Jie's modus operandi.) He has given up everything for something that is about to become meaningless or at best a curiosity sideshow in the modern world. Swordplay, those precepts about teachers and students and everything - the warlords, foreigners and merchants about to initiate the new era will not care about any of it.

And the same is of course true for QJJ's character. He is very much loyal to the Qing dynasty - he was the chief bodyguard of the emperor, he is now trying to prevent a rebellion (even if a lot of the latter is so as to stay out of jail.) And yet we know he fails, the rebellion succeeds, and the Qing dynasty is about to join the dust heap of history. He won't be able to prevent the end of the Qing any more than LYN's character will be able to resurrect the glories of the sect.

And his life IS tied to the Qing dynasty rise and fall, their inter-dynastic fights. And none of it matters. His whole life has been wrecked because of the failure of the 100 Days' Reform but not only has that become a historical footnote, the dynasty itself, that entire way of life is about to disappear. Whether the Guangxu Emperor was right or Dowager Empress Cixi was right and the fact that the latter won is about to become academic, as the whole dynasty, the whole concept of imperial rule, is about to disappear and become irrelevant, an equivalent of a dispute of a better way to build a horse-drawn carriage or to make clothes by hand - OBE and of no interest to the wider world.

Ultimately, whether LYN's guys find the treasure, or QJJ's people, or anyone else, the causes of the former two, the worlds of the former two are inexorably about to be gone.

It's kind of like the hair. It is a huge marker for them - for QJJ character, the queue marks that he's a loyal member of apparatus, that he's serving the dynasty, that he's the dutiful denizen of the Qing Dynasty. First thing he does once out of jail is get rid of his full head of jail hair and acquire a proper queue. For LYN, the very fact that he wears his hair long but queueless is a demonstration of his rebellion. And both of those styles are about to become relics or at best an unusual personal choice as soon enough short hair for men becomes the usual thing and there is no mandatory queue.

The tragedy of both these men is that they are born in the wrong era. If they were living a thousand, five hundred, three hundred, even a hundred years ago, they would fit. But as it is...they are ghosts who don't know it yet.

I think I've stated many times how much I love when we get 180 switches in the narrative.

Here John is trying to reconcile the fact maybe his dad isn't what he imagined.

Maybe he was too embarrassed to tell you the truth? Or maybe it was just that you'd never bothered to ask?

But why would you, John, if your dad never gave you indication otherwise? And like @homestuckreplay said, none of this 100% discounts the fact he Could still be a clown, just a non conventional one.

And then we switch to Dad causing chaos of the highest caliber. Breaking out of his cell and tossing safes around like its nothing.

You're going to need a bigger safe.

We then meet two new characters.

The first looks a lot like Spades Slick from the Midnight Crew, ARCHAGENT JACK NOIR, overseer of the Dark Kingdoms affairs from his three FENESTRATED WALLS.

However, much to your utter contempt, your FOURTH WALL was stolen some time ago.

Loving the meta implication here that the wall missing is the one we are looking through. And the owner? From the hands typing commands that affect the story, Ive got a hunch this unknown figure is the Narrator. I know I've said before that the Narrator is probably a seperate character, but seeing it this way where they Are in the story but also controlling it is interesting. I wonder if we will get even more meta moments with the characters this Narrator.

Back to Jack Noir, even if he is for evil there is one aspect in which he can commiserate with John (and WV now that I think about it); the colorful new harlequin uniform mandated by his ruler is a hideous, loathsome monstrocity. I wonder what came first, the dislike of harlequins or the uniform change?

There seems to be levels of sentience/subservience to the denizens of this kingdon that might also be reflected in the one of Light. If we work off of the chess metaphor, the imps we see around Johns house would be equal to pawns. They dont show any emotions for or against the style choices of their ruler and are single mindedly focused on destruction.

Jack and this fella, who looks like Hearts Boxcars, are drawn different. If you look closely, they also seem to have that barcode WV and PM have. I'd like to say that makes the four, Jack, PM, WV, and this guy, minor pieces however I cant even begin to think of which ones specifically. But also, does that make PM and WV defectors and was that before or after the costume change?

Things just aren't going well for Jack, first his Monarch (who must be Huge if only their eyes/hand are visible at a time) interrupts to force hat wearing compliance. Then, once the screen flips back we find Dad just walloping on that minion of Jacks'.

While Jack prepares for however hes gonna handle Dad, we go back to John. Snooping around, he finds some more gifts. Seems we are returning to sylladex shenanagins: John Edition.

Inside John finds 12 cards and a new modus, Array, which is infinitely easier, letting the user access any card at anytime. But of course this is John, hes not gonna take the easy way, no sir. Using the control deck, he inserts the Stack and Queue modi to access either the top or bottom card. And then to make it more complex he adds the Array, blowing out the dust as any gamer would.

Behold, an array of Queuestacks!

This is just the sort of needless complexity you have come to expect from your INVENTORY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.

Inside the smaller box John finds a box of Fruit Gushers which receives a celebratory jig. The larger box is just as great in Johns eyes being a whole suit. I wouldnt peg him as a suit man but who am I to judge.

All but 5 of them are 45-60 minute episodes (and 4 of those 5 are 25 mins), and 3 of them air twice a week. That's 22 shows from 7 different countries, including 3 GLs. And that's after I moved 3 to binges (MLMU, Meet You at the Blossom, and This Love Doesn't Have Long Beans) because I couldn't keep up and wasn't enjoying those week-to-week. It's TOO MUCH.

Last movie: I think it was BL Metamorphosis, due to @my-rose-tinted-glasses' rec and fansubbed by @furritsubs (thank you!).

Currently Reading: I'm still on book 3 of MoDu (Silent Reading), because I have had no time to read! I love this series I just haven't been prioritizing it. Also reading the Twilight out of Focus manga alongside the anime as it airs.

How did your walk down Baker Street go, Dr Watson? :D

I uh... made some very poor strategic decisions.

For context, I did not actually *want* to walk down Baker Street dressed as Watson, I just logistically kind of had to at least pass through it in order to meet my friends on time.

I don't think I'm a shy person, but it made me realise that so much of my modus operani travelling alone in a big city is to try to blend in and not be noticed, as a safety thing. In a group I'd have been totally chill, but all by myself...

Honestly I was really nervous.

Up until that point on my journey everyone had vehemently ignored me, but the MOMENT I turned onto Baker Street, I could feel every bored tourist waiting for the Sherlock Holmes museum clock me, and take out cameras, and start to come over in a way that would corner me, a couple of people yelled things at me, and I got the distinct impression that if I hung around it was going to cause a scene.

I started to like... power walk. I wanted to get out of there ASAP.

At which point I ended up passing by the queue in front of Madame Tussauds which was so much worse. If the Sherlock Holmes museum had 50 people outside, it felt like Madame Tussauds had 500.

In hindsight, I should have just chilled out. These folks were in a queue, so what if they filmed me, I could have just strolled past and given a cheery wave, but I was still kind of spooked. I picked up even more speed and... honestly I kind of.... ran? I pretty much ran. Squared my shoulders and put on a "gotta patient to attend to" face and ploughed forwards.

I realised that was definitely not better. Someone casually walking down the street dressed as a late Victorian doctor might only be noticed by a few people.

Someone STEAMROLLING THROUGH LIKE THEY HAVE A MISSION is going to get noticed by everyone.

But once I'd started I felt like I had to commit to the bit.

I bumped into a guy and said "pardon me" and he looked so, so bewildered. I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone do a double take in real life before.

Eventually I felt like I was in the clear and slowed down to a walk again!

I think you are absolutely right about the black hair - now that we have three characters fairly well fleshed out, it's easy to predict how GG might complete that square. a lot of my speculation is based on that, for example:

based on current gender identities we have two boys and one girl, so GG is probably a girl

key family members of characters are a dad, a mom, and a brother, so GG probably has a sister who's important in their life

John is into movies, Rose into literature and Dave into music, so GG might be into visual art, comic books, or television (perhaps sitcoms or cartoons, purely based off their vibes)

more generally there are a lot of parallels between John and Dave's interests (specific video games and webcomics) so we might see the same with Rose and GG -

Rose and Dave have 'needlekind' and 'bladekind' strife specibi (sharp weapons) while John has 'hammerkind' (blunt weapon), so GG might have something like 'crowbarkind' or 'ladlekind'

Stack/queue, tree, and hash map are all relatively common data structures, graph seems to be another fairly common one, so GG might have a graph fetch modus

John and Dave's houses are decorated with clowns and puppets (sharing a circus/performance theme) while Rose's is decorated with wizards - GG's might be full of a different magical being, for example mermaids, fairies, or vampires

all three characters are associated with disguise and concealment, John's more physical and Rose and Dave's more emotional - GG might have makeup or face paint among their interests

we meet John when it's clear and sunny, Rose when it's dark and stormy, Dave when it's blazing hot, perhaps we'll meet GG where it's freezing cold and snowing?

John and Rose play fairly 'standard' classical instruments (piano and violin) while Dave is into beats and remixes and modern music technology - GG might be a songwriter/lyricist to match that creative aspect, or might play a more modern instrument like a synthesizer or electric guitar

John and Dave both attempt to create digital things (failed coding files and weird blogs/webcomics) while Rose creates physical things (knitting projects) so GG might have an interest in painting, collage, model making, rube goldberg machines, etc

John's shirt symbol is a similar color to GG's text, so GG's shirt might be a dark blue like John's text. Also, John and Rose both have Creatures on their shirts while Dave has a record, so GG might also have a music/technology based symbol, perhaps a cassette tape?

I've noticed that all the characters have four letter/one syllable names so far, so GG probably does too. All three names are fairly common, and Rose is nature themed, so GG's name could go down either route. Based on their personality, some options I like could be Beth, Fern, Elle, Skye or Sage.

But if I was picking their name, I'd go for Evie - it's two syllables, but its biblical allusion would make sense with the story's themes so far and the username gardenGnostic.

if anyone else has any GG theories, either based on the text or wildly speculative, I would love to hear them!!

►◄► There are a couple of different variations of these, like all modus types I guess, but out of the box, these allow you to store plenty of items with the incentive of not fucking up, but ultimately it is sort of just a queue modus with extra difficulty, which makes it pretty inconvenient. I am pretty sure theres a setting on most editions of these that lets you turn off the eject function and let it just reject the addition, though. If yours doesn't have it, I could probably find a retool for you.◄►◄

Typheus is a web browser apparently, odd choice of name but sure. We get a little meta with a ref to mspaintadventures.com BUT for a comic that does not exist. HOWEVER cj on the D forum (( discord isnt invented yet. someone please come up with a cooler name thanks )) did find it linked to a page which may host the comic later (?)

Anyhow! John has now installed SBURB and we get to finally see the game!!!

Or maybe not. Theres a lot here that tells us some interesting stuff. Thanks to gnostiCosmologist and sz also on the D forum SKAIA could be a combination of sky + gaia with SKAIANET sounding similar to skynet from Terminator, self aware AI that initiated armageddon. So potentially an AI god of the earth? Lots of mystery here.

What wasnt mentioned is that John currently only has the Client side of SBURB. Im unsure of what server it's trying to connect to but it currently seems offline which is strange. If this game has been so highly anticipated wouldn't the servers be up by now? Especially since John got the game late.

From here, with nothing better to do John decides learning more about data structures would be useful.
