Roger Troutman (November 29, 1951 – April 25, 1999) was a singer, songwriter, record producer, multi-instrumentalist, and the founder of the band Zapp.
He used the talk box, a device that is connected to an instrument to create different vocal effects. He used a custom-made talkbox—the Electro Harmonix “Golden Throat”—through a Moog Minimoog and a Yamaha DX100 FM synthesizer.
As both band leader of Zapp and in his solo releases, he scored a bevy of funk and R&B hits throughout the 1980s and regularly collaborated with hip-hop artists in the 1990s.
Born in Hamilton, Ohio, he was the fourth of ten children. A graduate of Central State University, his first band was called the Crusaders. His band played in Cincinnati and recorded a single, “Busted Surfboard”/“Seminole”. He formed various other bands with his four brothers, including Little Roger, and the Vels, and Roger and the Human Body. In 1977, he and the Human Body issued “Freedom”, their first single.
He and his brothers were discovered by George Clinton. The original line-up consisted of Troutman brothers Roger, Larry, Lester, and Terry, along with Gregory Jackson and Bobby Glover. Zapp made their professional television debut on the first and only Funk Music Awards show.
He signed with Bootsy Collins and released his self-titled debut ‘Zapp’, which yielded “More Bounce to the Ounce”. The song peaked at #2 on the Billboard Soul Singles chart. The debut album reached the top 20 of the Billboard 200.
In 1981, he cut The Many Facets of Roger, his first solo album. Featuring a funk cover “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”, which went to #1 on the R&B singles chart, the album sold over a million copies. The album featured the hit “So Ruff, So Tuff”.
He became a producer and writer for other artists. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Seemingly inescapable whenever you turned on the radio last summer, Harry Styles’ As It Was was one of the biggest hits of 2022, and remains on heavy rotation today. It topped Spotify’s end-of-year list of the most popular songs, and hit number one in the US and UK.
The song was co-written by Tyler Johnson alongside Kid Harpoon and Styles himself. Johnson and Harpoon both have production credits on the track - as they do on Watermelon Sugar, another Styles mega-hit - but as Johnson explained to Music Week [Paywall] last year, the creative process behind the two songs was very different.
“[Watermelon Sugar] took a while and As It Was was more speedy, right out of the gate,” he says. “Harry was sitting on the Moog One and I liked what he was playing, so I sat down and played as he started to write the melodies and the lyrics. Tom [Hull, aka Kid Harpoon] did a half-time beat around it, we were like, ‘No, it’s not right.’ So then Tom played the double time beat, which felt very good.
In terms of harmonic structure, As It Was has been compared to a-Ha’s Take On Me. As John Mayer demonstrated during a recent live performance, the two songs share a similar chord progression - ii-V-I-IV - but As It Was has a very different, highly distinctive topline.
“I said to Harry, ‘We need a lead line’ and he just came up right away with the ‘Dah, dah, dah...’ part,” reveals Tyler Johnson. “He didn’t hesitate. Then he started writing the second verse and referring to himself in the third person. So much of this song just came from Harry’s heart. And then Tom, as he does, with this magical sense of hooks that he has, came up with the idea of doing, ‘You know it’s not the same…’ after the chorus, which I was very impressed with. That turned out to be a very smart move.”
The song came together quickly, then: “Really, the record was about where it’s at now after three or four days,” Johnson recalls. “It didn’t go through a lot of [changes], there was never anything drastic. I had a guitarist friend, Doug Showalter, add electric guitars and some transition sounds. Then we got the tubular bells - another Harry idea - and I’ve got a video of him playing those. We had Mitch Rowland come in to do some live drums. We chopped those up for the ending to give it a more bombastic feeling.”
The best thing about As It Was is just how effortless it is, how it just flows over you and gives you a good energy.
Having a real drummer, it turns out, is important for Johnson, Harpoon and Styles. “For As It Was, we were thinking 2008-2012 indie rock, MGMT, Phoenix, Passion Pit. We want to be referential and for the music to sound familiar, but our process is that we don’t do as much drum programming as live drums. That’s what people in that era were doing to make things sound big, but not too programmed. Our engineer Jeremy Hatcher really helped shape that, those drum tones are unique in pop.”
Speaking to Rolling Stone, Kid Harpoon threw another influence on As It Was into the mix: “I’m sitting there on the drums and I was like, oh, this could have a Strokes kind of vibe,” he said. However, while he acknowledges the debt that As It Was owes to other artists and songs, he also firmly believes that it has its own identity.
"You get to the end and you hear it and you go, oh, it’s got the sort of A-ha references and the Strokes references and maybe there’s a bit of Talking Heads in there and then it becomes something bigger than the sum of its parts.”
Perhaps the relaxed vibe of As It Was stems from the fact that it was recorded in the living room in the home of A&R man Rob Stringer’s house, a place conducive to chilling out, you would have thought.
“The living room was actually a very perfect size for a control room, nice and tight but kinda long,” notes Tyler Johnson. “The back of it had a couch, an upright piano and windows that looked out over some fields, and in the front we had the desk. We rented a ton of gear, all the walls were lined with preamps and compressors. Even though we were going kind of bedroom-y, Tom and I just love lots of microphones and we do live drums, analogue synthesisers, multiple guitar amps… We love that whole element to recording.”
It was Styles, it turns out, who pushed for As It Was to be his album’s lead single. A wise move, it turns out, given its subsequent success.
“The best thing about As It Was is just how effortless it is, how it just flows over you and gives you a good energy,” thinks Tyler Johnson. “It has a gentle conversation with the listener while being upbeat. It’s easy to consume, but it still has depth and Harry brings so much character to it. Really, pop is just about people living life with music to garnish it.”

Lady Blackbird - Slang Spirituals EP - bigger arrangements than the stripped-down instrumentation of Black Acid Soul, but her powerful voice remains at the center (there is a full LP out now but it's not on Bandcamp)
In October 2024 Lady Blackbird, producer and guitarist Chris Seefried , Foundation Music Label head and A&R Ross Allen, and Lady Blackbird’s travelling band of Kenneth Crouch (Keys), Tamar Barzilay (drums) and Johnny Flaughers (bass) took a break from extensively touring “Black Acid Soul” to lay down some tracks in Los Angeles. They decamped for a week long recording session to legendary LA studio complex East West (where the Beach Boys cut “Pet Sounds”) to put down tracks that Lady Blackbird and Chris Seefried had been writing whilst on the road… Some magic happened, the bare bones of a record and then some went down. They then moved to analogue whizz Pete Min’s “Lucy’s Meat Market” studio in Highland Park, where synths and strings were overdubbed, taking the basic tracks to the next level and often into outer orbit, with ARPs, Steinways, Mellotron, Hammond B3, Solina, Buchia synth, Bells, Moog, Pump organs, Wurlitzers, Fender Rhodes, Sitars, Clavinet, plus all manner of other cosmic analogue trickery and a string quartet lead by ace arranger Paul Cartwright. The record was taking shape….there was too much music - hence this EP - and it just needed balancing. That job fell to one of the best mixers in the world, Ken Takahashi, a man who engineers and mixes for some of the best around including current production legends Danger Mouse and Inflo.

Rabbit hole time...
Listened to this Daft Punk song, which features a monologue of Giorgio Moroder:
It led me to read up on Mr. Moroder, in this 2015 Guardian article.
I Feel Love, by Donna Summer, is adored in this fashion:
I Feel Love appears as if coming over the horizon like a new technological dawn, ushered in with a wave of static synth, before the emphatic, metronomic bass thud emerges, rendering obsolete the R&B-inflected disco that was so prevalent at the time. The repetitive Moog bassline was a feat of ingenuity as well as perseverance, painstakingly spliced together by Moroder and engineer Rob Wedel, who had to record it over and over because the modular kept going out of tune. And then you have Summer’s icily seductive vocal pinning it altogether on top. Its influence is immeasurable, and the bassline keeps turning up in the unlikeliest of places, from Simple Minds’ I Travel to Bon Jovi’s Livin’ on a Prayer."
Naturally, I had to hear it!
I've always been fascinated by the way it really sounds like one music era ending and another beginning. There's disco flavor, but it's dominated by that futuristic sound. Such a cool song.
BUT! Of course, my rabbit hole has to end here:
Good times. 💃💃💃

Which is stronger? The 7/8-18 thread is preferred for high-torque applications (like Jeep Steering Kits), while 7/8” is great for general off-roading.
6. GM Offset Tie Rod Ends: Fixing Bump Steer on Chevy & GMC Rigs
If you own a GM truck or SUV, offset tie rod ends help correct steering geometry after a lift. Benefits include:
Reduced bump steer
Smoother highway driving
Longer-lasting ball joints
EWO’s GM-specific steering upgrades ensure perfect alignment, even with 6”+ lifts.
7. Jeep Steering Kits: The Best Options for Wranglers & Gladiators
Jeeps are notorious for weak steering, especially with bigger tires. The best upgrades include:
One Ton Tie Rod Kits
High Steer or Crossover Kits
Heavy-Duty Drag Links
Pro Tip: If you’re running 40”+ tires, a High Steer Kit is almost mandatory.
8. High Angle Drag Links: Preventing Binding at Full Flex
A High Angle Drag Link allows for greater suspension articulation without binding. Key benefits: ✔ No more steering lock-up at full droop ✔ Smoother turning on off-camber trails ✔ Compatible with GM, Jeep, and Ford rigs
9. Moog ES-Series vs. EWO Tie Rod Ends: Which Lasts Longer?
Many off-roaders start with Moog ES2026R, ES2027L, or ES2234L/R tie rods, but they often fail under extreme use.
Why EWO’s parts outperform Moog:
Larger, stronger ball joints
Military-grade chromoly construction
Designed for off-road abuse
If you’re tired of replacing ES23434L/R ends every few months, upgrade to EWO’s unbreakable steering components.
10. Why Choose East West Offroad (EWO) for Your Steering Upgrades?
✅ Made in the USA – No cheap overseas junk ✅ Proven in Baja, Rubicon, and Moab ✅ Lifetime warranty on many components
Whether you need Dana 60 Tie Rod Ends, a Y Link Kit, or a complete Jeep Steering System, EWO has the toughest parts on the market.
Final Verdict: What’s the Best Steering Upgrade for Your Rig?
Daily-driven trail rig? → Crossover Kit + One Ton Tie Rods
Rock crawler or buggy? → High Steer Kit + Y Link OTK
GM truck with a lift? → Offset Tie Rod Ends + High Angle Drag Link

Jackie Shane is an African American trans woman who was a soul and R&B singer prominent in Toronto's jazz scene in the 1960s, most well known for her song Any Other Way, which was popular enough to make it to national charts. If you listen to her music, specifically her live performance recordings (which iirc are on spotify), it's clear she wasn't the kind of person to hide herself.
Wendy Carlos is one that I've actually seen going around tumblr a little bit but she helped create the Moog synthesizer, has won multiple Grammys for her work, and is the composer of A clockwork orange, The Shining, and tron (1982). She started transitioning in the late 60s and came out in the late 70s.
Jayne County is, according to wikipedia, "rock's first openly transgender singer", and while not being a household name she did apparently inspire musicians like Bowie, the Ramones, and Lou Ree. I'll be honest I'm just including her bc she was referenced on Jackie Shane's page, this is the first I've heard of her. She also came out in the late 70s, specifically 1979.
I can't think of many more people to add at the moment but we have been around, and will continue to be around no matter what anyone says.
i know i got nuked for saying this but it's still on my mind cuz i just can't get over how much i feel about how little of transfem history is preserved.. like transmascs will pass around their little "lesbian dressed as a man" idols from scattered points in history and dig up their entire history to the tune of thousands of notes. i haven't seen a single figure even close to that in transfem circles and part of that is we often dont care to mythologize our ancestors into great men unaffected by the pressures of their time but also because... they aren't there, few historical texts care to remember us. we have like.. marsha and the joke abt temple priestesses and that's it. and it's not like transfem history is completely barren but it is so significantly unkept that we really do have very little in the way of historical transfem figures we can look back on (don't lecture me abt applying modern labels transmascs do this to every lesbian pirate in history and nobody argues with them)
not that i want to do what transmascs do with their history, i've judged that behavior before, how it becomes the creation of a flattened and totalizing mythology that feels more like fandom than actually keeping any kind of trans history in tact. i don't want a transfem pirate from 400 years ago to become blorbo of the week but i do want her story to be kept and accessible. i want transfem history to not be shuffled into a corner that hides its existence and disconnects us from time. part of that is just loss of knowledge, our stories are not kept safe the way others are especially through colonization. most colonized people have their transfems, by whichever name they have for us, erased from their culture by their colonizers. and no i'm not saying that doesn't happen to transmasc history because it definitely has, but again, there's a reason we know about a european transmasc pirate more than we know about any transfem. the degree of loss is what i weep over
