The Disability Library

I love books, I love literature, and I love this blog, but it's only been recently that I've really been given the option to explore disabled literature, and I hate that. When I was a kid, all I wanted was to be able to read about characters like me, and now as an adult, all I want is to be able to read a book that takes us seriously.

And so, friends, Romans, countrymen, I present, a special disability and chronic illness booklist, compiled by myself and through the contributions of wonderful members from this site!

Warfare Wednesday: Eggnog Riot

The Eggnog Riot was a drunken riot that took place on 24-25 December, 1826, at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Alcohol was banned in the Academy, prompting cadets to smuggle in a large quantity of whiskey to spike their eggnog. Sylvanus Thayer was the superintendent of the Academy at the time.

Timeline of Events

Dec. 22

At 20:50-22:15, Cadets William R. Burnley, Alexander J. Center and Samuel Alexander Roberts smuggled two gallons of whiskey from by boat, originating from Martin’s Tavern, across the Hudson, to North Barracks room No.33. Cadet T. M. Lewis smuggled a gallon of rum from Benny’s Tavern to North Barracks room No.5.

Dec. 23

At 17:45, a Christmas party began at Thayer’s residence, lasting until 21:30.

Meanwhile, at 18:00, cadets Walter B. Guion, Jefferson Davis (future president of the Confederacy), John Stocker and David Farrelly met at Benny Haven’s tavern. Back at the Academy, the North Barracks’ party preparations began. Residents stole small amounts of food from the mess hall. During this time, the South Barracks caught wind of the party North was planning.

Dec. 24-25

At 22:00, the party began. Nine cadets in North Barracks room No.28 started off the night, with others joining as the party progressed. In room No.5, seven cadets started a party. A notable attendant was future president of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis. Cadet Nathaniel Eaton, in charge of North Barracks’ external post, discussed the smuggled booze with Captain Ethan Allen Hitchcock, a member of the military tactics department at the Academy. Early on Christmas morning, Farrelly fetched another gallon of whiskey from a tavern, possibly Benny Haven’s.

At 02:00, cadet Charles Whipple, superintendent of the division, investigated the commotion coming from room No.5. He interrupted a round of singing coming from eight cadets, including Davis. After some talking with the cadets, Whipple returned to his room. At 03:00, Hitchcock began a patrol around the barracks. At 04:00, he heard loud noises upstairs, and went to investigate. In room No.28, he found six drunken cadets and two sleeping ones. He ordered two cadets back to their room, and after they left woke up the sleeping ones and told them to return to their rooms, too. He then confronted cadet James W.M “Weems” Berrien, who responded similarly. Hitchcock sternly lectured the residents for possession of alcohol on campus, and left the room at 4:15. Weems started to express his anger about Hitchcock, prompting William D.C. “Billy” Murdock to lead the organization of a riot against Hitchcock.

At 04:30, Hitchcock went to his room to sleep. He heard knocking at his door three times, and each time nobody was there. Eventually he found a drunken cadet and saw Davis heading to room No.5, where 13 cadets were partying. Davis warned of Hitchcock’s arrival. Hitchcock entered and ordered a cadet to open another cadet’s footlocker, but was refused. Hitchcock ordered for the disorder to end, and left the room to look for Lieutenant William A. Thornton, at 4:50.

Thornton had been walking the North Barracks from 22:00 to 02:00, noticing the partying, deciding to go to sleep at 02:00. He was awaken by loud yells, and upon exiting his room, was attacked by three cadets. Thornton arrested cadet William P.N. Fitzgerald for brandishing a weapon. Fitzgerald retreated to room No. 29 and told the two cadets there of the arrest.

Noises erupted from South Barracks, prompting Thornton’s investigation. Roberts, who had been ejected from room No.28 earlier by Hitchcock, knocked Thornton out in a stairway.

Some cadets went looking for Hitchcock, and three were discovered by cadet James G. Overton, not involved in the parties, who questioned their behavior. The three drunkenly said they were looking for a drum and fife.

Around 05:00, several windows had been broken, and Hitchcock found a drunk cadet wandering. He then returned to his room, No.8, only for his door to be attacked by several cadets, including Guion, who drew a pistol and shot into the room. The captain opened the door and yelled at the cadets to stop, starting to arrest them.

Hitchcock had Eaton go find Major William J. Worth, commandant of the cadets. Overton asked Hitchcock to find Thayer, and Hitchcock replied “No, Mr. Overton. Fetch the com [Commandant Worth] here." Many cadets thought Hitchcock was calling in the bombardiers to quell the riot, using heavy weapons, and thus the non-drunken cadets took up arms in defense of North Barracks.

Thayer awoke to the sound of drums at 05:00, and ordered his aide, Patrick Murphy, to fetch Worth. Truly, the hunt for Worth had begun.

Hitchcock continued to try to restore order, fighting with cadet Walter Otey. Thornton woke up and returned to his room, met by Hitchcock at 05:45. By 06:00, non-drunk cadets joined in trying to restore order. Overton could not find Eaton, who was searching the South Barracks, but did find Worth. Hitchcock told Worth what happened. The Second Artillery arrived at North Barracks in time for reveille, at 06:05.

By 06:05, reveille sounded, mixed with gunfire, glass breaking, profanity from cadets, cries of pain and threats to academy officials. The riot started to end.

Aftermath

Captain Hitchcock and Lieutenant Thornton had been bruised, with several cadets suffering minor injuries, and Fitzgerald a hand injury. Worth reported to Thayer that between 50 and 90 cadets were involved. The subsequent inquiry determined the number to be 70. 22 cadets, including Davis, were placed under house arrest. There was 20 trials, 17 cadets were expelled as a result. There was determined to be $168.83 worth of property damage.($4,430 in today’s money.)

In her mind, the little plan all made sense. Change into a pink sweater and jeans, keep the shoes (they were cute!), and attempt to make the smudgy makeup look intentional (that post-sex look was hot, right?). Then grab a bottle of wine to drink on the rooftop. Perfect way to recover from the embarrassment and to celebrate one of her least favorite days of the year. What wasn’t in the plan was running into something, especially not him of all people. “Oh... Hey. Hi?”

SORROWFUL JONES

JULY 4, 1949

Sorrowful Jones is a remake of the 1934 Shirley Temple film, Little Miss Marker. In the film, a young girl is left with the notoriously cheap Sorrowful Jones (Bob Hope) as a marker for a bet. When her father does not return, he learns that taking care of a child interferes with his free-wheeling lifestyle. Lucille Ball plays a nightclub singer who is dating Sorrowful's boss. 

Although the official opening night in Hollywood took place on Independence Day 1949, it was premiered in New York City a month earlier, and seen in Australia on June 24, 1949.

CREDITED CAST

Lucille Ball (Gladys) was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began her screen career in 1933 and was known in Hollywood as ‘Queen of the B’s’ due to her many appearances in ‘B’ movies. With Richard Denning, she starred in a radio program titled “My Favorite Husband” which eventually led to the creation of “I Love Lucy,” a television situation comedy in which she co-starred with her real-life husband, Latin bandleader Desi Arnaz. The program was phenomenally successful, allowing the couple to purchase what was once RKO Studios, re-naming it Desilu. When the show ended in 1960 (in an hour-long format known as “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”) so did Lucy and Desi’s marriage. In 1962, hoping to keep Desilu financially solvent, Lucy returned to the sitcom format with “The Lucy Show,” which lasted six seasons. She followed that with a similar sitcom “Here’s Lucy” co-starring with her real-life children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as Gale Gordon, who had joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” during season two. Before her death in April 1989, Lucy made one more attempt at a sitcom with “Life With Lucy,” also with Gordon, which was not a success and was canceled after just 13 episodes. She died on April 26, 1989 at the age of 77. 

Ball's singing voice is provided by Annette Warren, who also sang for her in Fancy Pants and later provided the singing voice for Ava Gardner in Show Boat.  Her first screen dubbing was for Lured featuring Lucille Ball, although Warren did not dub Lucy’s voice. She provided the singing voice for Pepper (Iris Adrian) in the Bob Hope film The Paleface (1947). 

Bob Hope (Sorrowful Jones) was born Lesley Townes Hope in England in 1903. During his extensive career in virtually all forms of media he received five honorary Academy Awards. In 1945, Desi Arnaz was the orchestra leader on Bob Hope’s radio show. Ball and Hope did three other films together. He appeared as himself on the season 6 opener of “I Love Lucy.” He did a brief cameo in a 1964 episode of “The Lucy Show.”  He died in 2003 at age 100.

Mary Jane Saunders (Martha Jane) makes her film debut. She went on to do a season of TV’s “Tales of the Welles Fargo” (1960-61) and made two appearances on “My Three Sons”: one with William Frawley and one with William Demarest. 

William Demarest (Regret) is best remembered as Uncle Charlie on “My Three Sons,” a role created after the death of William Frawley. Demarest and Frawley appeared together on screen in The Farmer’s Daughter (1940). He was nominated for an Academy Award in the biography, The Jolson Story (1946). Demarest did two other films with Lucille Ball: Fugitive Lady (1934) and Don’t Tell The Wife (1937). He died in 1983 at age 91. 

Bruce Cabot (Big Steve) appeared with Lucille Ball in 1934′s Men of the Night. In 1950, he joined Hope and Ball once again in Fancy Pants.  His main claim to fame is rescuing Fay Wray from King Kong (1933).

Tom Pedi (Once Over Sam) did one season of the short-lived sitcom “Arnie” (1970-71).  He was in the 1980 remake of Little Miss Marker, upon which Sorrowful Jones is based. 

Paul Lees (Orville Smith) was blinded by enemy artillery during his service in World War II. He received 32 military decorations and ribbons, including the Legion of Merit. Despite his lack of vision, Lees learned to act and signed a contract with Paramount. He would memorize script dialog by having someone read it to him twice.

Houseley Stevenson (Doc Chesley) was a British-born character actor who had just finished doing The Paleface with Bob Hope. 

Ben Weldon (Big Steve’s Bodyguard) appeared on “I Love Lucy” as the thief who breaks in to the Ricardo apartment to steal “The Fur Coat” (ILL S1;E9).  He was seen in a season one episode of “The Lucy Show.” 

Emmett Vogan (Psychiatrist) did four movies with Lucille Ball previous to this one. In 1954 he played Mr. Bolton in The Long, Long Trailer. 

Thomas Gomez (Reardon) was an Oscar nominee for Ride the Pink Horse the previous year. In 1953 he was seen as Pasquale #2 on CBS’s “Life With Luigi”.  He did a 1964 episode of “My Three Sons” with William Demarest.

UNCREDITED CAST (with connections to Lucille Ball)

Ethel Bryant (Nurse) was also seen with Lucille Ball in Broadway Bill (1934), another film involving a racehorse.  John Butler (Jack - Bettor on Green Diamond) was also seen with Lucille Ball in The Affairs of Annabel (1938). 

Bill Cartledge (First Jockey) was also seen with Lucille Ball in The Joy of Living (1938). 

Maurice Cass (Psychiatrist) was also seen with Lucille Ball (and John Butler) in The Affairs of Annabel (1938).

Michael Cirillo (Horse Player) joined Bob Hope in Paleface and Son of Paleface as well as Critic’s Choice with Hope and Ball in 1963. 

Charles Cooley (Shorty) was seen with Hope and Ball in Fancy Pants (1950) as well as a dozen other Bob Hope films. He also was a regular on “The Bob Hope Show” on television. 

James Dearing (Spectator) was in eight other Lucille Ball films between 1936 and 1954. 

Jay Eaton (Horse Player) was in eight other Lucille Ball films between 1937 and 1946.

Chuck Hamilton (Police Officer) was seen in the background of eight other Lucille Ball films from 1937 to 1950.

Selmer Jackson (Doctor) was in six other Lucille Ball films between 1933 and 1949. 

Kenner G. Kemp (Bookmaker) was in seven other Lucille Ball films between 1936 and 1960 as well as doing background work on a 1965 episode of “The Lucy Show.” 

Bob Kortman (Horse Player) was in four other Lucille Ball films between 1934 and 1950. 

George Magrill (Horse Player) makes the last of his nine film appearances with Lucille Ball. He started in 1933 with Broadway Thru A Keyhole. 

John Mallon (Horse Player) was also seen with Hope and Ball in Fancy Pants (1950). 

John ‘Skins’ Miller (Jockey) was also seen with Hope and Ball in Fancy Pants (1950) and previously with Ball in The Big Street (1942).

Walter Winchell (Himself, Voice Over) was a journalist and radio host who was the narrator of Desilu’s “The Untouchables.”  He also joined the cast in their satire of the series on “Lucy The Gun Moll” (TLS S4;E25). 

The film was made at Paramount Studios in Hollywood, with location shooting in New York City. This was Lucille Ball’s 70th film!

THE STORY

Sorrowful Jones (Bob Hope) is a New York bookie who keeps his operation hidden behind a trap door in a Broadway barber shop. He suffers a financial setback when a horse named Dreamy Joe, owned by gangster Big Steve Holloway (Bruce Cabot), unexpectedly wins a race and Jones has to pay all the bettors.

Jones learns that the race was fixed by Big Steve, who tells him about giving the horse a "speedball." It turns out Big Steve has informed all the bookies in his circle of friends about the fixed race, and demands a sum of $1,000 from each one of them in exchange for this information.

Before the next race, Jones learns Dreamy Joe will lose, but still takes bets on the horse from his customers. He even takes a bet from gambler Orville Smith (Paul Lees), who leaves his four-year-old daughter Martha Jane (Mary Jane Saunders) as collateral. Orville overhears a phone call where Big Steve reveals that the race is fixed, so he is killed by one of Big Steve's goons, Once Over Sam (Tom Pedi). Jones is forced to take care of Martha Jane and brings her home with him. 

The next day Jones gets help from his ex-girlfriend, burlesque performer Gladys O'Neill (Lucille Ball).

Big Steve tells Jones he is being investigated by the racing commission so he is quitting the race-fixing business. Big Steve plans to make one final race before he gets out of the game, where he is fixing it so that Dreamy Joe will win. He also transfers the ownership of the horse to Martha Jane, unaware that she is Orville's daughter. After the race, Big Steve will kill the horse by giving it a high dose of "speedball."

Jones tries to find Martha Jane's mother, but discovers she is dead. Gladys suggests that Jones give all of Dreamy Joe's winnings to Martha Jane to help her survive, or she will contact the police and tell them about Jones' operation. She has no knowledge of Big Steve's plan to fix the race.

Big Steve finds out that Martha Jane is Orville's daughter, so Jones must hide her to protect her from being killed. When hiding on a fire escape's landing, Martha Jane falls down and is seriously injured. In a coma, the little girl calls out for Dreamy Joe.

In order to save Martha Jane and wake her up, Jones and his partner Regret (William Demarest) steal the horse from Big Steve at the race track. They take it into the hospital room where Martha Jane lies. Martha Jane wakes up and the police find out that Big Steve is responsible for Orville's murder.

After Big Steve is arrested, Jones proposes to Gladys. The police want Martha Jane to be placed in an orphanage, but Jones and Gladys, who have married, decide to adopt the girl. They go away on their honeymoon together with their newly adopted daughter.

“Havin' a Wonderful Wish (Time You Were Here)” by Jay Livingston with lyrics by Ray Evans is sung by Lucille Ball (dubbed by Annette Warren).  

“Miss Beverley Hills of Hollywood” comic book issue #6, January / February 1947 promoted the film. Lucille Ball still is purporting to have been born in Butte, Montana. Here her birth date is also incorrect: August 6, not August 8. Note how much the Drama Teacher resembles Lucy’s mother, Dede Ball.

The film was mentioned when Lucille Ball and Bob Hope guested on “Dinah!” in 1977. 

In 1989, after Ball’s passing, a clip from the film was incorporated into “Bob Hope’s Love Affair With Lucy.”

Hong Kong's Airport Authority Appoints Ricky Leung as Executive Director, Engineering & Technology

Hong Kong's Airport Authority has appointed Ricky Leung as Executive Director, Engineering & Technology. Ricky is tasked with leading the Engineering & Technology Division, where his responsibilities will include managing the AA’s assets and delivering engineering and capital works projects at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).

He has served in a wide range of important roles over the course of his 28-year career with the AA, covering planning, design, construction, facilities, systems, operations and maintenance. In 2015, he was appointed as Deputy Director, Engineering & Technology. Ricky will report to the AA’s Chief Executive Officer, Fred Lam. Mr Lam said, “I would like to congratulate Ricky on his new role. Ricky is a chartered civil and structural engineer with over 35 years of experience. He has played a key role in the recent major infrastructure projects at HKIA including the Terminal 1 extension and Sky Bridge. I am confident that with his expertise and vast experience in airport infrastructure projects, the team will continue to contribute to the airport’s continuous development.” Ricky holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a Bachelor of Science (Engineering) Degree from the University of Hong Kong. DRG goes to Washington

On July 10th and 11th, the Dupuytren Research Group went to Washington DC. We visited offices of Congressional representatives and other organizations to raise awareness about the impact of Dupuytren disease and the need for federal funding of Dupuytren research. Right now, there are no federal funds directed specifically for Dupuytren research – not at the NIH, CDC, or DOD.

Over these two days, DRG Board of Directors Laura Holmes Jost, Peter Geimer and I visited over a dozen congressional offices and logged over 10 miles of walking back and forth through the tunnels beneath the White House which connect the Senate and House of Representatives buildings.

We met with Democratic and Republican members of Congress. We were well received: Dupuytren is a bipartisan disease. Nearly every office we visited reacted with the same two sentences:  “I’ve never heard of this before” and “Why haven’t I heard about this before?“. It was a clear validation of the need to continue with outreach and awareness efforts at all levels of government. We provided materials to all of the offices including pictures and documentation of the impact of Dupuytren disease on individuals, families, and the country. We sought out connections and advice on how to advocate more effectively for federal funding of Dupuytren research. We provided materials in both short and long versions explaining the need for Dupuytren research.

The materials we gave out included the following, which you might find helpful explaining to others why Dupuytren advocacy is so important and why we need to have honest conversations about the real impact of Dupuytren disease and related conditions:

We need to talk about the real impact of Dupuytren disease

Dupuytren is a common problem, but advocacy is a challenge because of perception. Most people have a mild version of Dupuytren and for them, it may be a minor concern. At any one time, only one in five people with Dupuytren are ready for a hand procedure. People may have a lump or a slight finger bend as the only issue of their lifetime. Or their fingers aren’t yet bent enough to need straightening. Or they might have one finger affected, have a successful procedure, and never another problem. If everyone fit into that category, there would be no compelling reason to push for better treatment options.

But not everyone has mild Dupuytren. Three to five percent of people with Dupuytren – three hundred thousand to half a million Americans – have a treatment-resistant disease which keeps coming back after treatment. Repeat treatments are increasingly riskier and less effective. The chance of a permanent complication goes up with every procedure. For this group, even radical operations are likely to fail over time.

Recurrence is the most important problem with Dupuytren because it eventually leads to disabled hands that doctors can’t help. Radical operations may slow recurrence but don’t prevent it. The reality of treatment failure is often missed because individual doctors don’t treat many patients with aggressive Dupuytren. When the surgeon’s perfectly executed state-of-the-art procedure quickly fails because of recurrence, they are baffled, frustrated, and out of optimistic answers. Patients give up. Surgeons give up. This is the group that needs fundamentally different options than what doctors currently have to offer. This is the group that has fallen through the cracks. This is the motivation for our work.

The common misperception – doctors and patients alike – is “It’s just a finger – not a real problem.” and the discussion stops. The truth is Dupuytren is a health issue much larger than bent fingers. Several studies have concluded that people with Dupuytren severe enough to require treatment are in fact at greater risk for a variety of other medical problems, cancers, and shortened lives. This isn’t fearmongering. It’s the nature of the disease: Dupuytren is a systemic problem which shows up most obviously in the hands but isn’t confined to them. This is true of many other diseases. Psoriasis, for example, is often seen as a local skin problem. It’s not. Psoriasis is a systemic problem which shows up most obviously as a skin rash, but almost one-third of people with psoriasis will also develop psoriasis-related arthritis and other health issues. This is why aggressive psoriasis is treated with systemic medicines like Enbrel. It was blood test research like we are now doing which led to the development of medicines like Enbrel. People with Dupuytren don’t need a new operation. They need a new medicine to turn off the process at the source, in their bloodstream.

We must talk about the fact that Dupuytren is more than bent fingers. It affects overall health. Most surgeons miss this because health-related Dupuytren research is published in medical journals, not surgical journals. Even if a surgeon is aware, it’s off their radar: surgeons don’t dwell on medical problems because they don’t treat medical problems.

We must talk about the fact that because Dupuytren affects overall health, Dupuytren care places a large unrecognized financial burden on the federal government, on private insurers, and on individuals. 

There is hope, but not without difficult conversations about the full impact of Dupuytren. I am very optimistic that this work will transform Dupuytren care, reduce the need for surgery, and lead to healthier lives for those affected. But to do this, to make progress funding and doing research for a cure, we have to have the tough talk: Dupuytren is a major health issue, not just a finger problem. Until more people know this, nothing will change.

There’s an even more important reason to talk about Dupuytren-related health issues: research itself. Dupuytren biology is similar to that of other fibrotic medical diseases which have very active research communities: lung fibrosis, liver fibrosis, kidney fibrosis, arteriosclerosis, and others. These diseases are not directly related to Dupuytren, but because of their similarities, fibrosis research benefits Dupuytren research and vice versa. I regularly reach out to researchers in these areas to collaborate because all these fibrotic diseases are – like Dupuytren – local effects of a systemic problem. Their cures need systemic, not local treatments. Dupuytren research may lead to advances in their research. We’re refining research tools honed on these diseases to solve the mystery of Dupuytren.

Our delegation either connected with or got leads to connect to a variety of government offices whose missions align with the Dupuytren Research Group: the Rare Disease Caucus, Veterans Affairs, FDA, HHS, National Council on Aging, HELP Committee, DOD, NIH, NIAMS Coalition, NIAMS, Senate Special Committee on Aging, House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, Authorization and Appropriations Committees, and others.

The path is being forged. It’s a daunting task, but based on the experience, I’m more optimistic than ever that our efforts will we will bring about much-needed government support for research to find a cure for Dupuytren disease and related conditions.
