maybe it was the thought of mason moving to the other side of the country, but a sadness sat with the triplet. in amongst all of the panicking she'd been doing as to why they'd been summoned together in the way that they had, the thought of one of the family moving somewhere far away hadn't actually crossed her mind. she liked that they were all close together. but it did seem like a more likely option than one of their parents being incredibly sick out of the blue.
"wait, what?" caroline's appearance at least meant that the sisters were safe and sound, another worry crossed off the list of potentials. now there was a whole new problem to deal with. "where did you hear that? did dad tell you? and why did he tell you first?" in a family as big as theirs, there was always going to be someone who knew the details first –– rachel just didn't like when it wasn't her.
"tell us what you know, right now." they still had time, before their parents turned up she was sure. "you have to spill. triplet privilege and all that."

Rachel is the youngest of the Charlotte King and Cooper Freedman triplets. Some would say that she fades into the background of the accomplishments of her siblings, but she would disagree. From a young age, she knew hospital medicine was a pathway that she would never be interested in. Surrounded by those in their absolute worst moments and often being faced with the realization that she could do nothing to help some of them would be too taxing on her heart. Instead, she wanted to work in private practice like her parents and their close friends, but she didn’t have any sort of specialty in mind before she entered medical school.
Rachel didn't let it bother her that she didn't have a detailed life plan like her sisters. She spent more time focused on friends and dancing while in high school than studying. Crushing on boys but too shy to make the first move, her romantic experience was a bit limited. She applied for USC with her eyes on Keck School of Medicine, however, her application didn't quite make the cut. Luckily, she figured as much and cast a wide net. Weighing her options, she ultimately decided on the University of California San Diego and was able to beef up her application to transfer into UCLA upon completion of undergrad. She soon fell in love with endocrinology and diabetes became her passion project.
Rachel loved that she had pulled herself into a branch of medicine separate from any of the various other doctors in her life and was excited to educate others into not letting the diagnosis of diabetes define their entire lives. She was accepted into residency and fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Upon completion, she enlists her father and Aunt Addie's help to figure out how to open up her own endocrinology private practice with her medical school friends. She has hopes of being involved in expanding into research after they gain their footing as a privately owned practice.

Of course she didn't like it. Who would enjoy seeing their big sister ( if only by a few minutes or so ) break down into a puddle of tears? Rachel certainly wasn't one of them. "That's just it, though. You don't have to pretend with me. You know that. Whatever's going on, we'll figure out a way to get through it TOGETHER."

Starter for @illuminatcd for Rachel King-Freedman
Charlotte had told Rachel she would meet her for lunch. She had a busy day herself but she wanted to meet her because there was something Rachel wanted to tell her. Charlotte had moved around a few appointments so she could make it. The old Charlotte would’ve never done that but things were different after having the triplets. She made it to the lunch spot early, shockingly, and sat down at a table waiting for her daughter. Opening the menu she glanced over it.

BEST MOVIES OF 2020 (Arranged alphabetically)
1.     David Byrne’s American Utopia Director: Spike Lee Cast: David Byrne, Chris Giarmo, Tendayi Kuumba, Karl Mansfield, Angie Swan, Bobby Wooten III, Mauro Refosco, Tim Keiper, Gustavo Di Dalva, Jacquelene Acevedo, Daniel Freedman, Stephane San Juan Critic’s Notes: Stop Making Sense is my favorite concert of all time. So, American Utopia easily slots in as one of my favorite. And boy, this is the most urgent film of 2020. It is that watchable as David Byrne possesses his inner Mr. Rogers to guide Americans to an ideal society.
2.     Driveways Director: Andrew Ahn Cast: Hong Chau, Lucas Jaye, Jerry Adler, Robyn Payne, Christine Ebersole, Brian Dennehy Critic’s Notes: Just the sweetest swan song from Brian Dennehy before his passing. Generally, this film is a slice-of-life story of the unlikely friendship between a lonely boy and a lonely senior, and the poignancy is too precious that it struck a chord.
3.     Fan Girl Director: Antoinette Jadaone Cast: Charlie Dizon, Paulo Avelino Critic’s Notes:  For my native pick from Philippine cinema, here is an unlikely story between a fan and her idol. It is a predictable deconstruction of an acclaimed, who becomes an over-the-top antithesis to his onscreen persona. But the script is sharp, so as the delightful leads.
4.     First Cow Director: Kelly Reichardt Cast: John Magaro, Orion Lee, Toby Jones, Ewen Bremner, Scott Shepherd, Gary Farmer, Lily Gladstone, Alia Shawkat Critic’s Notes: Kelly Reichardt became the Yasujirō Ozu of 2020, for this film contains the year’s most meditative shots and moodiest atmosphere on an otherwise simple story of friendship.
5.     I’m Thinking of Ending Things Director: Charlie Kaufman Cast: Jesse Plemons, Jessie Buckley, Toni Collette, David Thewlis, Guy Boyd, Hadley Robinson, Gus Birney, Abby Quinn, Colby Minifie Critic’s Notes: Charlie Kaufman is one of the pioneers of meta storytelling. And him helming one of the most unnerving suspense novels is a strange one. But it brings to light the subgenre of existential horror. First viewing may not be scary, but lingering on its subtext is the scariest part.
6.     Minari Director: Lee Isaac Chung Cast: Steven Yeun, Han Ye-ri, Alan Kim, Noel Kate Cho, Youn Yuh-jung, Scott Haze, Will Patton Critic’s Notes: My pick for the best film of 2020, Minari is another slice-of-story about a Korean immigrant family wanting to achieve the American dream in Arkansas. What it lacks on dramatic stakes, it has the heart of a striving family. And the best subplot comes from grandma Soon-ja.
7.     Palm Springs Director: Max Brabakow Cast: Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti, Meredith Hagner, Camila Mendes, Tyler Hoechlin, Peter Gallagher, Chris Pang, June Squibb, J. K. Simmons Critic’s Notes: The emblematic comedy of the last year, Palm Springs takes in the time-loop trope and gives it a fresh twist. The true heart of it is the chemistry between Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti, whose signature personas seemingly blend.
8.     Soul Director: Pete Docter Cast: Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Graham Norton, Rachel House, Alice Braga, Richard Ayoade, Phylicia Rashad, Donnell Rawlings, Questlove, Angela Bassett Critic’s Notes: Aside from Brad Bird, Pete Docter just become one of the Pixar directors whose films are worth waiting. Soul is an intriguing character study of two souls needing to find the purpose of their lives. With its layers and layers of themes, this is the boldest Pixar project since The Incredibles.
9.     Sound of Metal Director: Darius Marder Cast: Riz Ahmed, Olivia Cooke, Paul Raci, Lauren Ridloff, Mathieu Amalric, Chelsea Lee Critic’s Notes: Riz Ahmed is the reason to see this film that honors the deaf and disabled community. His character’s deconstruction and subtle expressions give such gravitas that it is heart-wrenching to watch. Also, the best sound design of the year. (Sorry, Tenet.)
10.  Wolfwalkers Director: Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart Cast: Honor Kneafsey, Eva Whittaker, Sean Bean, Simon McBurney, Tommy Tiernan, Jon Kenny, John Morton, Maria Doyle Kennedy Critic’s Notes: Cartoon Saloon just landed itself as one of the prime animation studios, next to Pixar, Studio Ghibli and Laika, with their most ambitious film yet. Wolfwalkers is perhaps their Princess Mononoke with a fresh twist on Irish history.
Runners-Up: Hamilton, The King of Staten Island, Run, The Trail of the Chicago 7, The Vast of Night
Missed Masterpieces: Nomadland, One Night in Miami, Promising Young Woman, Rocks, The Father

Books 2019-20
I didn’t bother with one of these booklist blog posts last year but I got curious as to what books I’d read this year. I don’t write a regular book blog so here are some short comments on the books that I’ve read starting in January 2019, more or less
Virginie Déspentes’ Vernon Subutex 1 & 2 made me feel that she is the author who best expresses in fiction a clear vision of the world in the first fifth of the late capitalist 21st Century, the first volume in particular.
I haven’t read a lot of poetry this year but I did begin 2019 with Pey Pey Oh’s Pictograph and Shadowplay by Phillip Gross; Lutz Seilor’s In Field Latin (thanks to translator, Alexander Booth) Later in the year, Alexander Booth’s own collection Insulae. All treasures. Another poetry pleasure was a re-read of Ifor Thomas’s Body Beautiful, a vision of the body as it the writer faces cancer. This is also the year that I delved deeply into Cavafy (which led me to re-read Durrell’s Justine.) This poetry created for me a feeling of space, opening up areas away from the rich density of prose.
After a second Moroccan visit, prose reading continued to circle the Levant: Abdellatif’s The Law of Inheritance; Olivia Manning’s The Levant Trilogy; Amin Malouf’s Ports of Call; and a new Mathías Énard Tell Them of Battles (translated by Charlotte Mandell).
Not so much reading on the noir/crime front this year but John Lincoln Williams’ Fade to Grey was an intriguing and action-filled investigation that exposed a complex Cardiff/Bristol underworld. James Lee Burke’s In the Moon of Red Ponies managed to skewer undercover American politics and arms trading while involved in a story of an Indigenous American on the run for crimes he may or may not have committed.
A group of writers that kind of fall together subject-wise are Chris Kraus, Olivia Laing, and Maggie Nelson: New York, Kathy Acker, S&M, Artaud, sex positive, art-queer. Have to include Cosey Fanny Tutti’s Art Sex Music here, too.
To put another couple of books/writers/artists together with them: Dreamweapon by Angus MacLise; and LouReed: A Life, by Anthony DeCurtis. They deal with directions in which I’m interested in taking my own creative work to some extent: nonfiction and performance art, particularly Butoh. After training in Butoh with Yuri Nagaoka and Seisaku, I picked up the anthology, Inside, Japanese women write on Japanese women. Inside covers in short fiction every stage of life from birth to menopause. Yuri’s daughter, Rio Minamoto, who has won a plethora of Japan’s most prestigious prizes, has a story in this, the only piece of her work that I could find in translation.
After re-reading the hardback copy of ICE by Anna Kavan, I read and re-read a lot more Anna Kavan, inspired by that and the Machines in the Head anthology from Peter Owen Publishers. I reviewed Machines in the Head for 3AM magazine. In connection with the review article, I also read Rhys Davies’s Honeysuckle Girl, a novel based on Kavan’s life. https://www.3ammagazine.com/3am/missives-from-a-parallel-dimension/
Speaking of anthologies, I was pleased to have story – Our Lady of Penrhys – in High Spirits: A Round of Drinking Stories, edited by Jonathan Taylor and Karen Stephens.
Outside of any reading pattern, I read three by Cynan Jones, Richard Hughes’ A High Wind in Jamaica (kind of like the Famous Five on an acid trip), two by the extraordinary Christa Wolf. Sam Shepard’s Spy of the First Person, Patti Smith’s The Year of the Monkey, Ann Quin’s Berg. Wayne McCauley’s Simpson Returns. Jean-Luc Nancy’s The Fall of Sleep.
Happy New Year Everybody
Here’s the full list more or less in the order of reading. All power to the makers.
Vernon Subutex 1                   Virginie Déspentes (trans. Frank Wynne
Art Sex Music                          Cosey Fanny Tutti
Ports of Call                            Amin Malouf (trans. Alberto Manguel)
The Law of Inheritance           Yasser Abdellatif (trans. Robin Moger)
Ice                                           Anna Kavan (re-read)
Tell them of Battles               Mathías Énard (trans. Charlotte Mandell)

"you're still holding on." rachel spoke with confidence, a slight roll of her eyes coming quickly at the end of her words. "you waited far too long."

❛ GINNY GARDNER ┊ GEORGIA KING FREEDMAN┊ is the child of ┊CHARLOTTE & COOPER ┊ the ┊ NINETEEN ┊ year old ┊ FEMALE ┊SHE┊ is / are said to be ┊ + RESPONSIBLE ┊ but also ┊ - STUBBORN┊. makes sense since ┊ HE┊ is / are known as the ┊ WINESOME ┊ around seattle and by their parents. ┊ mel ┊ female ┊ she/her ┊ mst. ┊.
she is the youngest of the king-freedman triplets.
with being the youngest, it’s hard for her to get her way because it used to be the majority rules thing between her, caroline & rachel.
growing up she grew to love the sport of volleyball & has been playing ever since, but stopped once she graduated high school.
with her parents working as doctors, georgia doesn’t really want to do what they do, but wants to go into nursing to be closer to her parents still & share an interest in what they do.
when she found out that caroline was pregnant, she was there for her through it all, making sure she was okay & went with her to the doctors appointments because she wanted to be there to hear her niece or nephew’s heart beat.
once the baby once born, georgia was so excited, & couldn’t wait to start spoiling her new niece. now being an aunt, she want to make sure she plays with he niece as much as she can.
attends uow in nursing, taking a lot of classes this semester, & doing her best to stay on top of things.
wants to show her parents that she wants this & works hard to her full potential.
has had one relationship, but that was in high school & it didn’t end well. she got her heart broken because she was cheated on & has had her walls up ever since then.
ever since her break up she focused more on school than anything else. keeping herself busy.
on weekends, she volunteers at the mental hospital to help with the younger kids & to talk to them about their day & to see how they’re doing. she adores kids & hopefully one day will have kids of her own.
pretty quiet & closed off, especially to guys, but once she gets a crush, she will focus most her attention on him, but right now she doesn’t see that happening, mainly because she doesn’t want to get her heartbroken again & makes jokes that she’s going to be single forever.
