FALL OUT BOY'S ULTRA-AMBITIOUS NEW ALBUM WILL MAKE THEM ONE OF THE WORLD'S BIGGEST BANDS. SO HOW COME PETE WENTZ IS STILL SO DEPRESSED?
source: x the other page missing ;-;
2007 Kerrang! No.1142
Tumblr media
PETE WENTZ is an hour late.
Because of this the first thing you learn about Fall Out Boy is that nothing happens without him. His three other bandmates - singer and guitarist Patrick Stump, guitarist Joe Trohman and drummer Andy Hurley - sit waiting. They're in a conference room on the first floor of the Marriott Hotel in Lowell, Massachusetts, a pretty, vanilla flavoured town 60 minutes north of Boston. The reason the group are here is because in three hours they're due to play four songs in front of 8,000 people gathered to watch the local radio station's Christmas concert. But first they're forced to wait. Because picturing Fall Out Boy without Pete Wentz is like imagining a motorway without traffic.
"See, that's not right," says Patrick Stump. Stump is wearing a small frown and an indulgent smile. It's been said that he has no ego. As you hear him now he's checking out his own entry page on Wikipedia. "No, see, they've got that wrong...
We don't have much time. Fall Out Boy landed at Roston's Logan airport at 4pm. This lunchtime they were in Chicago; by dawn they'll be in Manhattan. The band's ride pulled up in Lowell an hour ago. It's now 6:30. At 9:25, they're due onstage. Before that they need to pose for photographs and answer questions.
"Pete's in his room," someone says. Andy Hurley goes downstairs to the toilet, taking a security guard with him. Fall Out Boy have two security men: one for Pete Wentz, one for the others.
Wentz calculates that he spends 40 minutes out of every hour on the phone. He receives up to a 100 emails a day. He owns a film production company. He's a published author. He owns his own record label. He owns his own clothing line. He's modelled for Gap. He'd be modelling for us if he could be bothered to be here.
But Pete is in his room, laid low with depression. He's sat on the floor "calling random people from [his] home town [Wilmette, Illinois]", people whom he believes will "understand [him]". Problem is, when they pick up the phone he "can't think of a thing to say". All the while it's getting later and later. He feels self-conscious about how to time his entry, aware that he might be thought of as "the asshole American guy in a band". Even now, two and a half hours later, these feelings are still resident in his mind. "It's weird," he'll say. "Although I'm functioning, half of my head is in another place.
Do you see how people might look at you, see your wealth and your privilege and your opportunities, and think: you ungrateful son of a bitch?
"Of course," he says. "I think that all the time. But you asked me about depression and so I'm talking about it. It's the culture we live in."
You don't seem to mind talking about it. "The only problem I have with it is that I don't want people to read this article and go, 'lt'd be so amazing to be depressed! That'd be cool!'. I don't want to create an industry of misery."
These days, Pete Wentz has prescriptions for Xanax, Praxil, Prozac and Ativan. To compliment this, he's taking serotonin reuptake inhibitors (more anti-depressants). In the past, he's been administered anti psychotics. If Wentz were to die tomorrow his coffin would need to be fitted with a child-proof lid.
"Sorry I'm late," he says, entering the conference room, shaking hands. "I'll be your self-conscious rock star for the day." Paul Harries, Kerrang!'s photographer, tells the bassist that we don't have much time. Pointing the lens at his face he tells him it'll need to see his full repertoire of poses. The subject understands precisely what the photographer means, and as the flash lights zap before him he gives him just that. The camera loves Pete Wentz, even if at the moment Pete Wentz hates himself.
He's depressed. You'd never know.
"NOT TO beat up on the press," says Joe Trohman. "But they do tend to take one look at our band and and say, Pete Wentz is Fall Out Boy." Trohman is answering a question as to whether it grates on his nerves that the band's bass player is the one who garners most of the public attention. "Not at all, no. Pete is the public face of the band because we want him to be the public face of the band.
Would you be screwed without him?

Don't know if someone explained this concept - but resident Belgian here to the rescue. 😋
What's the 'Warmste Week' (= Warmest Week, Warmest Party, Warmest Concert, ...)?
Tumblr media
It's a huge televised benefit event Flemish tv and radio companies organise every year. Happening in the week before Christmas until right up until Christmis Eve.
All kinds of people (schools, common people, politicians, famous people, organisations, even the Royal Family) rally around doing all sorts of stuff (marathons, concerts, baking, sales of goodies, etc) to collect donations. This also includes texting a message onto the tv or requesting a song on the radio for a few euros.
There is either one common goal or multiple different ones to people's own liking.
In between the music, people can explain what they did to participate and how much they raised. Or they let organisations talk about what they do for people and why they need the money. Great free PR for all small organisations with a cause on both sides.
This event is immensely popular, exists for almost 20 years (used to be known as 'Music For Life') and broke records with their amounts collected. Their highest was a total of 17 million euros.
This year's theme is 'growing up without worries'.

I just watched "Christmas at Graceland: Home for the Holidays" and it reminded me of "If I fell for you". Imma throw my studying through the window and re-read it all over again. Thanks for sharing your work with us 🥰
P.S. - are you going to watch Radio Company's concert today? It'll be 4AM for me but I'm so watching it! Had to reward myself for surviving midterma, even though I passed one out of three 🤣
Thank you! Just make sure you’re swapping back and forth between reading and studying. Study for an hour, get to read one part and so on.
I wish I was! I have a stageit for it but it’s 10pm my time and I have work early. I’m hoping someone records it so I can watch it later.

Random...
So last night was the Matthew West concert featuring Cochren and Company in Clarkston. What a great show. Now understand, especially the more time has gone on, I am not one to sit and obsessively idolize singers, actors, entertainers, and yes, I tend to look negatively upon those who do. Like several of my coworkers who are so wildly obsessed with Taylors Wift, spending small fortunes to attend her concert, spending hours refreshing refreshing refreshing their browser pages on their phone, desperately scrambling for a charging cord less they lose their precious place in line to get tickets to her last tour. I'm not all about that, and what the hell is wrong with you people. So my point there is that while I have heard the music of both these groups, it's not like I know the full discography, hell, I couldn't have even told you what they looked like.
We've had the radio pretty much exclusively set to K-LOVE now since not this past Christmas, but the Christmas before. I have it on classical in my office at work, in the car while I'm driving it can vary, but at home, it's basically the background music of our life. And in my work truck, and quite often in the vehicle too. And I heard on a commercial on the radio that Matthew West was doing a tour and coming to Clarkston. And I knew of several of his songs, and I liked them, so I got tickets. I had heard of Cochren and company, at least heard of a few of their songs, and I liked them too. I mean, it's contemporary Christian. It's very doubtful, very doubtful that I'm going to be standing there and be like no, I can't get into this.
I had attended that concert before in November downtown at Little Caesars arena. That was, oh let me think now... TobyMac, MercyMe, and Zach Williams. It was my first experience with a contemporary Christian concert. And wow. If you've never been, and there's a singer you happen to like, and they happen to be in a venue somewhere near you, I would highly recommend it. Because everyone was there for just one thing, to praise the power and glory of the Lord. To pray, together, thousands of people with their arms outstretched, oh, and certainly not to marginalize, excellent music too. Just really good solid music. Positive, uplifting, encouraging, but above all else, really good singers and songwriters. Really good harmonies and melodies. In such a variety of different genres of music, but just GOOD music! And you are invariably going to hear something that you needed to hear, whatever that may be.
This concert was the same but different, a smaller more intimate venue, and I say smaller with a grain of salt, this is one of those big non-denominational churches that seats like 3500. But I mean, the LCA seats 22,000, so definitely more intimate. But we're not talking like a school play or something here. It was just a fantastic concert. And it's the energy of the crowd, an entire room of people all there for that singular purpose, in some ways, it's like being at church. But different. But so good. It's the sort of thing you walk away from and you just feel uplifted, inspired, oh sure, all the stuff you got going on in your life, it's going to be there the next day when you wake up, but you're just sort of recharged, you just feel like you're going to be able to get through this, whatever this may be.
He said something last night, and damned if I can remember exactly how he phrased it, but it was something to the effect of these days, in America, it seems like we have the freedom to talk about anything we want, to share any opinion we have... as long as it's not about our faith. And boy, did that hit. Because yes, in this world where I'm reminded every time an email is sent that someone at work is allegedly a they/she/he, or last night at IHOP, where there was a group of high schoolers at the table next to us, one of which was clearly a boy wearing a 1950s polka dot dress, or where we were at the B-52's concert a couple summers back at Meadowbrook, and a commercial for Planned Parenthood comes on the big screen on the stage during the intermission, and everyone's cheering and clapping like seals, to stand and testify my faith, to stand there and say yes, I'm a Catholic, that's a hard row to hoe. Or just a Christian in general. To stand there and say that I believe in a higher power, and His name is Jesus Christ, you talk about a room going silent...
With that, it is incredibly affirming, the good kind, not pretending to be a gender that you're not, to be in a place with thousands of other people who believe the same things you do. Who go through those same awkward conversations. To know that you're not alone. Humans are social creatures, and we need that.
In the words of Matthew West: don't stop praying! 🥔

Women’s Power Dressing
Shoulder pads. Oversized double-breasted suits. The floppy silk “tie.” On runways and movie sets, in office buildings and boardrooms, women of the ’80s dressed in masculine-inspired fashions to express their growing power. Corporate business women, First Lady Nancy Reagan and global icon Princess Diana alike embraced the suit look, as did heavy-hitting designers of the era including Giorgio Armani, Thierry Mugler and Calvin Klein. The suits, shoulder pads and lady ties permeated pop culture as well, showcased in movies such as 9 to 5 (1980) and Working Girl (1988) and TV shows like Dynasty (1981-89) and Moonlighting (1985-89)—all of which featured strong female characters who brought even more popularity to the power dressing trend.
Food + Fun = ‘Eatertainment’
A man dressed up as Chuck E. Cheese, rodent restaurateur, 1987.
John Mahler/Toronto Star/Getty Images
Video games saw a huge rise in the 1980s, with standup machines like “Centipede” and, “Pac Man” (both released in 1980) and “Street Fighter” (released in 1988) sending kids and teens to mall arcades in droves. A favorite food of that same audience? Pizza. So when Nolan Bushnell, the co-founder of Atari, decided to launch a family restaurant filled with animatronic animals and video games that served, you guessed it, pizza, it was a match made in heaven. Chuck E. Cheese—and the trend of "eatertainment"—was born.
Music goes visual
When MTV took to the airwaves in 1981, the world's first music video channel kicked things off with "Video Killed the Radio Star." And while the song’s concept of that song may not have exactly foretold the future, it certainly changed the way fans viewed musical artists. The 24-hour music channel, with its moon man logo and a target audience of 12-to 34-year-olds, started as a way to promote new artists by airing videos, music documentaries and concert footage with a rotation of VJs (video jockeys) serving as hosts. Prince, Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, Boy George and others offered conceptual videos that often made headlines and broke barriers. (Jackson's 13-minute short film/music video for “Thriller " was the first of its kind.) Shows including "Yo! MTV Raps," launched in 1988, brought hip-hop culture to the mainstream. And the annual Video Music Awards, started in 1984, not only recognized music videos as a new art form, but garnered huge publicity—think Madonna emerging from a massive wedding cake as she sang "Like a Virgin"—sparking sales of fingerless lace gloves worldwide.
Toy Crazes Spark Frenzies
Shoppers camped out in line overnight in freezing temps. People ripped boxes from the arms of strangers. A near-riot broke out in Charleston, West Virginia, as 5,000 people showed up to score one of just 120 available dolls. All that behavior occurred in the name of Cabbage Patch Kids, a toy many described as "homely" that came with an often unusual name, plus a birth certificate, adoption papers and orphan backstory. The dolls, the brainchild of artist Xavier Roberts, hit store shelves in the summer of 1983, and all 2 million produced were sold by fall. As toy company Coleco raced to meet demand, reports quickly emerged of tramplings, fights and other violence by those desperate to purchase the dolls before Christmas. At its peak in 1985, according to Bloomberg, the line made $600 million. But while it earned the most headlines, it wasn't alone in the '80s toy shopping craze trend. Transformer sales reached almost $950 million in the 1980s, including $333 million in 1985 alone, the Associated Press reported. The Rubik’s Cube sold out during its debut year in 1980. And the animatronic Teddy Ruxpin plush toy that could talk, blink and move its head, sold out during the holiday season of 1985. Even at it's $59-$79 retail price, more than 800,000 dolls were sold that year.
