It’s always cool to see documentaries about the type of house that you yourself live in.
It’s not for everyone but I wouldn’t change anything about it.....except all the shit I’ve got planned to change in the near future, but we’ll ignore that. 🤣

From @coldsplinters: @workhard.hardlywork and I bought this 1200 square foot adobe/stone cabin in rural northern New Mexico back in 2017. The lot (legally named Tract F) was 40 acres and we’ve since bought an additional 25 adjoining acres in the last few years. The cabin was built in the early 2000s but was never lived in, so we’re the first residents. We’ve done a lot of “stuff” to the place, but most notably, we replaced a giant inefficient stone fireplace with a wood stove and added a south-facing sun room. We’re completely off-grid with solar for electricity and 6,200 gallons of rain catchment for our water supply. Satellite internet allows us to work from home and read Noah Kalina’s incredible weekly newsletter, which we hope he one day brings back. Photos by @noahkalina More photos on @cabinporn.

Right-to-buy council houses without specifically only releasing housing that already had a replacement built was of the most notable ways of the *many* that Thatcher et al screwed the UK.
I’d love to have a law put in place that landlords either have to sign contracts to provide housing under council house-type contracts with rent controls to people on housing benefit etc, or sell to the local council at compulsory purchase prices.
Same for all the houses not being lived in - use to house people under contractual controls, or have to sell to the council housing central fund.
Personally I’d start converting all the office units that are no longer needed because so many people are working remotely now into housing too.
Same for the huge city centre shops - I’m not sure if the pattern repeats elsewhere, but I live near Glasgow and the city centre has basically died since Covid. No one is renting the huge retail stores and the place is full of unhoused folk, which is a fucking scandal. So convert them into housing; let the buildings see use, and let those folks get off the streets. Pets and kids specifically allowed too - get families out of one-room shelters and into proper homes of their own.
I’ve heard that there would be issues putting in water infrastructure, but given the place is literally crumbling already and usage in so many areas is so low that having workers digging up the streets to install water lines wouldn’t cause enormous disruption, the time to do this is *now*. Build rainwater catchment and purification systems on roofs too - we get so much rain in the UK it’s kind of ridiculous not to use it! Some of that could go directly to drip irrigation in gardens, but plenty could go right into the houses/flats too. And of course this would provide tons of jobs in construction, architecture, planning etc etc.
Install gardens and green spaces around the place while you are doing this - offer some at low rent, or to buy cheaply, to market gardeners, but specifically put spaces in for communal gardens with the idea of offering allotments and encouraging people to grow their own food.
Put solar panels on every roof and integrate spaces for smaller wind turbines amongst the houses too. Huge storage batteries in basements to make the new blocks as low-footprint and self-sufficient as possible power-wise.
It would be a *fantastic* opportunity to create genuinely accessible housing - office buildings and shops already have lifts and wide corridors ideal for wheelchairs and other mobility devices, so keep that in the design when creating housing. There is a hidden epidemic of houselessness amongst disabled people and older folk with mobility needs, so create low-rent council housing that specifically fits those needs there.
It would regenerate the areas - all the smaller shopfronts not suitable for housing conversion would fill up with people offering the things people in residential neighbourhoods need, with a guaranteed payer base. People on low incomes *use* all of their incomes on necessities, so small businesses selling those necessities will do well. Offer small businesses low rents to provide those necessities. Any that don’t fill up, offer to charities and use for council staff offering the aid and advice people transitioning into housing actually *need*.
Carers are generally low-paid - so this would be an opportunity to offer them cheap housing close to a huge client base in the new accessible housing. No need for low-paid, mostly-female workers to dash constantly between clients in cars. They could walk to work and walk in between clients, who would also no longer be trapped in inaccessible homes, so people who are not actually bedbound would hopefully be less housebound.
Put rooms in the blocks for communal and co-op activities to reduce isolation - with the lifts and wide corridors, even people who are functionally housebound are likely to be able to make it to a room in their own building, and even quite young children could get to those places safely on their own if their parents are working. Wraparound childcare, paid and informal, near where folks actually live.
City centre areas that are now largely dead other than unhoused people, with limited and decreasing zero economic activity taking place and a decreasing incentive for businesses to set up there rather than in out-of-town retail parks people need to drive to, would become vibrant communities with every incentive for businesses to set up there, particularly for the small businesses that still employ the majority of people.
It wouldn’t take a lot to extend this model to transform those out-of-town business parks that are currently largely empty either; nothing says the businesses that are still there would need to move, and they would have a huge new pool of potential employees living within easily walkable distance, though there would need to be oversight to make sure places like Amazon didn’t attempt to buy them up and turn them into company housing. There would need to be a little more investment to provide green transport links like electric buses and trains so that it would be easier for small businesses to move in to provide services, but given the tax income that would result and the reduction in pollution the investment would probably pay itself back within a decade or so.

Some of us have done the math. You could build a dream cabin in the middle of the woods with a rain catchment system and everything. You're still not going to make it for very long. Why? Because if you want to live into peaceful old age, that requires doctors, nurses, engineers, and sanitation experts. It's also kind of hard to grow your own food if it's 110 degrees all the time and it hardly ever rains, or if the rain you need comes all at once.

hello! Anon (who is planning a post HcxFirewatch fic) again! I'm just curious, but how do firewater lookouts like Grian and Scar take a shower? By using one of those "camp shower" bags or do they go have a splash in the lake? Thank you in advance!
Hi! So, I was trying to find a YouTube short/tiktok video I swear I saw from @/followmyleap where he talked about how he took showers. Or maybe it was @/lookoutformichelle? (who has way more videos on tiktok but I don't have an account so I linked her youtube.) I failed to find the video I was thinking of but it was basically one of those camp shower bags. I think you could also just look up any type of advertised backpacking/camping shower products. I have no idea what products would/wouldn't be available in the 80s though. Grian and Scar DO have water—they have a rain catchment system in an underground tank, and then a spigot at the bottom of the tower. That's the same set up that Philip Conors had in his lookout in Fire Season and I know that the Firewatch dev team referenced his book too.
I also wouldn't discount what you could do with just a bucket of water and some soap, either. You don't have to have plumbing in order to wash yourself, nor do you need to have the falling water of a shower. You could just use the soap and then a smaller cup to rinse yourself.
I think the lake is last resort honestly because, well. I grew up swimming in lakes and I don't think anybody has ever felt super clean after swimming in one LOL. Maybe I just haven't tried that good glacial lake water...I think for a silly goofy moment he could go dunk himself in the lake, but for a legit long-term hygiene plan it'd be the former ideas.
they are more likely to be taking cold showers than hot though 😔

"Victorians are being urged to keep enough supplies on hand for 72 hours ahead of a significant storm event, which is expected to cause flooding and power outages across the state.
The premier, Daniel Andrews, joined Emergency Management Victoria deputy commissioner, Chris Stephenson, and State Emergency Service chief operations officer, Tim Wiebusch, at the state control centre on Tuesday to warn those living in parts of the state to prepare for up to 100mm of rain in the coming days.
“We know that our catchments are full, we know that we’ve had record rainfall to this point and the ground is absolutely sodden, so even a minor amount of rain would be a risk in terms of flooding,” Andrews said.
“But it’s not a minor rain event that we are forecasting. It will be significant rainfall in certain parts of the state and that will pose a flooding risk to communities in lots of different places.”"
be safe everyone

In the decades ahead, summers are set to get ever hotter and last longer, overwhelming the other seasons, and reducing winter to a couple of dreary months punctuated by damaging storms and destructive floods. Blistering heat will be the default weather for July and August, when a combination of high temperatures and humidity will make sunbathing and working in the open extremely unpleasant and potentially deadly. Our poorly insulated homes will provide little respite as they are turned into unliveable heat-traps. Camping out in gardens and parks will become commonplace as baking nights make sleeping indoors impossible. Inevitably, increasing numbers of people will flee the cities to escape the heat-island effect that will transform them into unbearable saunas. A general migration northwards and uphill can be expected, as cooler conditions become a big property selling point.
But hothouse Britain is about far more than insufferable summer heat. Progressive climate breakdown will affect everyone and insinuate itself into every aspect of our lives. Transport and energy infrastructure will succumb repeatedly to the onslaught of extreme weather, making otherwise straightforward journeys increasingly problematical, and power outages a normal part of daily life.
Health and wellbeing services will buckle, as tens of thousands of the most vulnerable people struggle in the growing heat and humidity, cases of poisoning due to heat-related food and water contamination burgeon, and new diseases suited to the hotter conditions – including malaria and dengue fever – gain a foothold. An explosion in mental health problems is also foreseen as living conditions become ever more desperate for many, and the strain on individuals and families takes its toll.
A confluence of desiccating drought, torrential rains and battering hail, flooding and new pests that thrive in the heat will take a massive toll on crops at a time when frequent harvest failures and climate wars will mean an erratic and unreliable supply from overseas. We have already seen price hikes and gaps on supermarket shelves as a consequence of the Ukraine conflict. Climate breakdown will bring far worse. One study predicts that by 2050 the world will need half as much food again, while crop yields could be down by as much as 30%. This is nothing less than a recipe for widespread hunger, social unrest and civil strife, and the UK is unlikely to be immune.
Heat and drought will be the signature conditions of hothouse Britain, but there will still be rain. In the summer, downpours fed by convective storms will be so heavy that little rain will penetrate the ground, most of it flowing over the surface to feed lethal and destructive flash floods. Autumn and winter will see frequent incursions of powerful, damaging, storms and so-called atmospheric “rivers”, bringing rains that last for days on end, overwhelming catchments and driving river flooding on a biblical scale.
Coastal communities will fight a losing battle as bigger and more frequent storm surges, increasingly powerful waves and a remorseless hike in sea level supercharge cliff erosion and permanently swamp low-lying terrain. Sea level is now rising by a centimetre every two years, which is more than double the rate for the period 1993-2002. Within 80 years it will certainly be more than a metre higher, and could have climbed by 2m or even more. This would bring the North Sea far inland, threatening especially low-lying communities such as the Lincolnshire towns of Boston and Spalding.
Alongside rapid emissions cuts, the inevitability of climate breakdown makes adaptation desperately urgent. Now should be the time for massive government investment in resilient infrastructure and the preservation of health and wellbeing – but there is little sign of this. Our housing stock remains totally unprepared for the new summer temperatures and flood plains are still being concreted over for new estates; meanwhile, transport and energy networks continue to be dangerously exposed to the vagaries of flood, wind and excessive heat. No plans exist, either, for a national water grid that could ease future drought conditions. The bottom line is that every decision – from local government upwards – needs to be made in light of building resilience to climate breakdown as well as slashing emissions. But this just isn’t happening.
If you are terrified by what you have read, then I have done what I set out to do. Too many of us still think that global heating will just mean that the world will get a bit warmer and that somehow we will muddle through. This is plain wrong. So be scared, but don’t let this feed inertia. Instead channel the emotion and use it to launch your contribution to tackling the climate emergency. Things are going to be dreadful, but – working together – we still have the time to stop a dangerous future becoming a cataclysmic one.

Feeling disgruntled again that I just haven’t got the energy/spoons/etc to repaint my house the way I 100% absolutely want it painted in fabulous jewel tones and gothy dark purples and plums and so on instead of all the white and beige everywherrre.
STG if someone gave the trust $1mil tomorrow I would probably just fix this house up a little more rather than necessarily look for a new one. A catio. More insulation and electrical outlets. Maybe some rain catchment or roof solar? Central heating via the attic if possible? IDK. Exterior and interior paint.
Hire someone to definitely come rip up all the goathead and baby Chinese elms in the yard and plant more native plants.
...Well, ok no, I /might/ see if I could find a duplex or triplex for sale so certain friends of mine could maybe come be my neighbors, too, first, if they wanted to uproot if given the chance to at deep discount.
And I wouldn’t want to gentrify my neighborhood so that’s another worry I guess. But like, I don’t want a bigger house or fancier house I just would like the problems here to be taken care of and a COLORFUL house.
