Yo Hibari!! How's the gag situation still going on around the Oozora group? A lot of silly antics tend to get tossed your guys' way, after all. (And are some of them leaking from a certain waiter/waitresses' original story by extension?)

Pig-tailed girl, I understand the sacrifice you have made to keep your chastity until I can honorably be with both you and Tendo Akane, but I finally have a solution. Behold! Water from the Spring of Drowned Twins, when I douse myself with this magical water, I will finally be able to be with you and Tendo Akane.
Tumblr media
"Oh, we are so not doing this right now!!" Or ever, really. But Ranma can only focus on so much when Kuno is threatening something so...horrible! (Barring that it's Jusenkyo, so... No way that water would work as intended.)
First, the water. An expert kick knocks it out of his hands and... Well, no need to worry about what happens after that.
Cause Kuno is quickly sent rocketing into the sky at the next hit, Ranma breathing hard...mostly from stress. Man, she'd just gotten it good with Akane...!! Can't the Kuno family ever quit?!
She goes to head home, but pauses. A squirrel got hit with the water from the bucket...and two of them are, indeed, there. Reacting with bafflement at the existence of the other. She gives a shudder at the sight.
"I think I just saved 'Kane and I from something truly horrible..."

Thanks for answering my ask from a few weeks ago @neonscandal ..... If you don't mind me asking (again), what are your top 10 (or top 7) favorite media (can be books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series)? Why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before....
Thank you for asking in the first place! ❤️
Not at all unique is the fact that, as soon as I get asked a question about my top faves, I immediately draw a blank on everything I've ever enjoyed or watched, ever. 😅 I'm sure that's not the first time you've heard that. No need to apologize, as you can probably tell from other asks, my answers change regularly. This is my anime/manga blog so without any regard for order:
Life Lessons with Uramichii-Oniisan (anime) - depending on how old you are, there's a cognitive dissonance that occurs when you're no longer younger than nor the same age as your favorite protagonists in the stories you grew up with. This is the anime that eases the blow of that like the ibuprofen you now keep at home, at work and in your purse. And it's hysterical.
Attack on Titan (anime/manga) - There is something to be said for the eloquence of the exposition in this story which, when you know Isayama spent years shopping his art around to no avail because of the roughness of his style, makes perfect sense. While refining his art, he had all this time to pore over the story, hide little easter eggs so there'd be one string that gathered up all seeming loose ends. Just an incredibly interesting story to unfold. It's the kind of thing you wish you could read again for the first time but that's laughable because, every time you read it, you notice something you hadn't the last time.
To Your Eternity (anime) - This is the Grey's Anatomy equivalent in anime. Like, oh. You're emotionally constipated and need a good cry? Pick an episode at random. Watch a whole season if you're really about that life.
Sasaki to Miyano (manga/anime) - TBH I tied between this or Horimiya. They are not the same story but hold similar places in my heart. What I love about Sasaki to Miyano is how delicate it is. Yea, slow burn, whatever. But no, it just kind of gives Miyano space to come to terms with himself and Sasaki is the safety net that accepts him in all forms. Can love be this sweet?
Goodbye, Eri (manga) - Fujimoto is off the wall. Chainsaw Man is an excellent representation of that. Seemingly unfocused and always good for some sort of shock factor. I've been wanting to write, for some time, about how Fujimoto is like a trickster of a genie but I'll shelve that for the time being. Goodbye, Eri's disjointed narrative as if told in photographs and the art style which shows movement despite its static medium. It's a really elegant piece with a plot twist you don't see coming because, of course you don't. That, in fact, is part of the whole message of the story, isn't it?
Ranma 1/2 (anime) - Nostalgia. This was the first anime I ever watched that I locked into. It started me on a path of drawing, it encouraged me to seek out other shows.. this series is what started it all wayyy back then (okay, not that far back then, this was in the 00's). Tsundere x tsundere, yes but also just the immediate identification with characters who couldn't authentically be themselves because they kept bending and breaking under external pressures. I could very much relate and empathize even if the chaos of their universe was too fanciful for my own. Also, pretty sure Rumiko Takahashi is the longest running mangaka with consistent chapters in Shonen Jump for the last 40+ years is wild.
Vinland Saga (anime) - I honestly don't even know what to say about this story. But I think my favorite observation is a post I saw someone make where they wrote "No one will know the violence it took to become this gentle" with a picture of Thorfinn. And they were so poignantly right. Phenomenally twisted revenge story that is not at all satisfying. 10/10.
Link Clink (donghua) - This show is a vibe. If it hasn't been on a recommendation list yet, it's coming. The music, the art, the unfurling back story of the main characters as they untangle the lives of others? It manages to be both gutting and cerebral at the same time. Like every time I watch I'm like... I need to read the source material because the complexity of the concurrent storylines makes it such a head scratcher as to the larger plot.
Jujutsu Kaisen (anime/manga) - *Gestures vaguely to the rest of my blog.* We're still in the throes of how this story is going to play out which is nerve wracking and exciting for all its possibilities. I hold out a lot of hope that we'll see some stunning exposition in future chapters that we won't see coming.
Belle (anime) - It's just beautiful. 😘👌🏾 I talk a lot about my niece and nephew because I've turned them into my dorky little mini-me's. Also, being an aunt is like the best job. Belle is a movie that had them both gagged with the animation. If a show or series can get both of them to put their ipads, books, art supplies, etc. down, then I know I put them onto something special. Honestly, anything I enjoy with them makes it that much more special to me, personally.
This was lovely. I'll get back to posting lists soon, feel free to check out other recommendations!

Hai there! Hope you're doing great!!! 🌹
First of all, I love your blog and I'll be honest, It's actually one of the reasons I came here to Tumblr in the first place (I think I found you first through that one Ataru analysis you posted a long time ago). Your blog was just the thing to satisfy my rumic cravings and I hope that we can be friends ❤
And second, do you have a favourite moment for each Rumiko Takahashi couple? I tried searching through your blog but I couldn't find anything which had the answer, sorry if it's already been asked before!!
Hope you'll reply!! X3
FIRST OF ALL, I ALREADY LOVE YOU BECAUSE YOU HAVE BEST DETECTIVE CONAN GIRL IN YOUR PROFILE PICTURE ASKJBDAKSJ
Also thank you so much!!! It flatters me a lot you were the reason to be here on tumblr! (even tho the Ataru defense post has so many misspellings now in my eyes skjdbakjs)
The Rumic World fandom is light and cool so you will be happy here and yes! We can definitely be friends hehehe.

So, because I ended up thinking about related things due to an ask on my Ranma Ask Blog (and was left unsupervised for too long) I was left wondering: what if the Locked Tomb series was based on the other Homest- classic web series?
Tumblr media
Gideon would remain about the same, I guess.

7 and 11 for the ask game?
7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?
- its less him and more the most popular ship(s) w him but RYOGA...... RANRYO IS NOTHING TO ME I WENT FROM "its not for me but i can understand" TO "its not for me but i can understand BUT I ALSO FIND IT DEEPLY DEEPLY ANNOYING AND COMPLETELY DISMISSIVE OF THE ACTUAL CANONICAL STORY WE SPENT 38 VOLUMES WITH JUST TO SAY RANMA LEAVES AKANE FOR A MAN"
i also dont like ryoga/ukyo at all sorry 😔 i briefly liked it when i was in 7th grade but that was only bc i didnt know konatsu existed and i felt like everyone Had to be paired up in nice neat heterosexual relationships yknow
11. number of fandom-related words you've filtered
10 but only 3 of them are ranma related and 2 are tags used only by specific blogs probably so u can block em if u arent interested without actually blocking op. i highly recommend doing this if u spam the tag regularly with just like incorrect quotes or liveblog posts 😭 i dont wanna actually block ppl i dont have any issue with but i also want to be able to see fanart without it being drowned in 1 persons screenshots......

I hate this, but it's kinda telethon time.
We are closing in on the end of the month, which means it's going to be the first of a new month, which means that A- I must write a check to my landlord for $1100, and B- That patreon page I keep forgetting to link at the end of posts is going to lock in donations for the month... and then probably take a week or two to forward me the money. For quite some time now, the amount I'm getting out of Patreon has been significantly less than that magic $1100, and that's not even the total amount of money I need to have every month to continue to be alive. There's also food and electricity and a frankly unreasonable ISP bill and all. Specifically, just putting the cards on the table here, the current expected cash ball coming in is... "$762.4" and yes it is super weird that Patreon will list 40 cents as ".4" like that.
So, this month is not The Month. Scraping stuff together, calling in favors, having a nice windfall from putting that little RPG in a bundle, I in fact have enough cash en route to my bank that I can cover rent for September BEFORE Patreon gives me that $762.40, and still have a couple hundred bucks to cover having power and eating enough to stay alive. But when October 1st gets here, yeah, I'm just going to have what Patreon is gearing up to send me here, and if I manage to convince my landlord to give me an extension and wait for that month's payment, I can... MAYBE live through that month? Don't think buying Halloween candy to hand out is in that budget though, and based on current projections, yeah, by November there is going to be A Problem.
I'm trying every angle I can to scrape cash up, but my primary source of income at the moment is still... put entertaining/interesting/informative things up on the internet and hope people enjoy those enough to want to throw some money my way. And this blog here has kinda been the only platform I've had for sharing stuff, so basically what I'm asking is...
WHAT DO YOU PEOPLE WANT FROM ME!?
But no, for real. I have a lot of different irons in the fire right now, and haven't been sharing much on most of them, but if there's a particular sort of thing you'd like to see from me, and particularly if seeing that would leave you predisposed to throw a little money my way, please just flag me down via message here on tumblr or discord if you know how or... some e-mail I'll maybe remember to check, and let me know? I know people still love that Ranma thing I wrote up years ago, I could maybe find more things to do trans readings on? Did people like that FF14 plot summary? Want more like that? Movie reviews maybe? Updates on games I'm working on? I've been spending a ton of time on this really ambitious electronics project. I could talk about that more? Explain how computers work in great detail? Shove everything aside and get back to Twitch streaming? I'm desperate over here.

My concern with MAO translations..
Recently came a creative ad campaign for the "Stop Pirate Edition" program,to combat the pirating of manga ran in the Asahi Shimbun today. It has a number of panels from manga such as Ranma 1/2, Maison Ikkoku, One Piece, Banana Fish, Bleach, Golgo 13 and many others. See below:
Tumblr media
Is manga piracy really the case..?Not that simple as it sounds.
Reading it I just pondered not so much about the manga piracy-but more about the removed MAO translations blog! Now we're reaching the sad anniversary of the disgraceful removal.
I'm the first ever person who asked the question to fellow blogger @Ka-go-me. See below https://ka-go-me.tumblr.com/post/717595141861523456/hi-i-try-to-find-your-mao-translations-blogbut
Why was it a disraceful move of VIZ media?
Because she had legally purchased the MAO raws, straight from the source, doing every week her best on translating each MAO chapter, since DAY One literally ! VIZ media began the translations of MAO a year after its debut.
Why did VIZ did treat awfully our fellow @ka-go-me ?
I guess due to envy on her,for her splendid, consistent MAO-translations.And everyone could compare between the two teams of translations, thus detemining:Their translations would look inferior to hers. @ka-go-me had made a Truly Wondrous work:)
I'm seeing her as Positive model:Because her good education, her consistent blogging, her fluecy on Japanese, and about making the whole MAO translations. She was also making the Hanyo No Yashahime translations. But this also got removed, for the envy of VIZ(:

The How To Be Covers of 2023
Hey do you want a single article with nice, clear, readable version of all of 2023’s How To Be book covers? I like to imagine you do, so here’s a post with them in it!
I think when I skip December I’m in a mind to take a big swing. I know a January ago, I did Grimlock from Transformers because the idea of making a robot dinosaur in a fantasy magepunk situation strikes me as an interesting puzzle. How do you line that up? Cyclops is an interesting puzzle in the same way because, and I say this with love in my heart for Actual Biracial Features Cyclops’ Greatest Fans, but, like, Cyclops cooked down to his common public awareness is a very one note character and that character is kinda a boring twerp. And like if you go for ‘Cyclops, but he has a hang-glider so he can fly’ the character stops focusing on the ability to throw laser beams out of the eyes.
The thing this did for me, though, the thing I liked the most, was that the big fan of Cyclops I knew liked the article and could trust what I said about the character. That’s a good sign, and it comes up more later.
Having exhausted the romantic comedy anime Ranma 1/2 (I haven’t, just you wait) I figured I’d break out another early formative influence on my anime-tainted sexuality. February saw Inu-Yasha’s Inu-Yasha, the dog demon whose name means dog demon, who is a demon that is also a dog. Look I don’t know what you want out of this one.
During March, Frame Fatales ran! And I thought it’d be cool to do a character from a speedrunning game, and that I’d assign myself a limited amount of time to do it. This was the first of a number of articles this year that wound up as ‘well, uh, this character is clearly based on a ranger, so pick a ranger,’ because D&D is a symbiotic element of culture that has been siphoning on the meat of reality itself.
Anyway, Link is the Free Square of How To Be so I made sure this time I instead tried to avoid ever using a gendered pronoun for the elfy bastard.
I wanted to make sure my How To Be for April was a character I personally really liked. And I really like Samus, I think she’s great. But I actually feel kind of weird about this one like if I asked you to list ‘Talen characters’ I doubt you’d get to Samus Aran very early in the list. I think she’s cool as hell!
But also I think I almost like the SA-X more than I like Samus, because she’s a goopy pile of monster parts trying to be a person, and that’s something I like. But that comes up in a different series on this blog.
Sometimes I’ve been thinking about how How To Be is a series that seeks its own series. When I become a fan of something, it’s cool because it gives me more axes to continue to draw on them for inspiration, trying to find more and different ways to play in this system.
Owl House is a delightful series, and it’s a great example for this article series. There are a bunch of interesting characters who do things in different ways, but they get to do a lot of different things that still all meet the goal of ‘adventurey stuff.’ It makes it a rich field to consider, but I knew I wanted to start with Amity. Partly because Amity is great and I like her as a character a lot, but also because Amity has a power-set that looks cool and interesting and asks for an interesting puzzle to be solved.
How big and scary a pet can you have? Can you make that pet important compared to the character?
I make sure that June is a month where I pick a character that Fox likes, because it’s Fox’s birthday month. I start by asking her what she wants and since Fox likes characters who are queer, that tends to work with the Pride month really easily.
In this case, the article about Amaya from The Dragon Prince it was a great chance to talk about disability in D&D; specifically, the way that some players think of disability as a point-buy system with reality, unlike what it is – a different way of interfacing with the reality in which you live. There’s stuff you can’t do, but to be ‘disabled’ is a social category, not an inherent one, and it relies on people having an assumption about what a standard person ‘should’ always be able to do.
I don’t think the joke on this one – that this book about a shapeshifter who uses it for disguises was named like a famously boring engineering physics textbook – was a little too high brow. Or maybe I’m only the kind of person who knows famously boring textbook jokes.
Mystique was a great chance to talk about ideas of commonality of abilities, and ways to route around different heritages depending on what players and DMs want to work with. I think this is a good one for if you want to look at multiple different ways to do the same thing.
The article about Altair on the other hand was a chance to talk about how ‘killing someone’ is not something isolated to combat, and a chance to slander the Shadow Assassin for a bit. When talking about some other types of characters, like your hunters and rangers, it’s funny how hard it can be to represent a character who is so obviously a class like a ranger or a thief, but when you want to represent an assassin the game has no good tools for it.
Fortunately, Altair scraps out his fights 99% of the time so you’re fine.
September. A breather. Also, a character I’ve just always wanted to do in How To Be, but who doesn’t have an obvious opportunity. This one is just for me. Kaede is cool as hell, and he does mode switching and he’s equal parts a cocky asshole and a soft sweetboy, and I just think he’s neat.
With October I progressed into full blown Locked Tomb Brain and made an article about Harrowhark Nonagesimus. What I liked here is that the article is, yes, about summoning skeletons and stuff, but more important than that is its discussion of how you represent characters of wildly different genre and power levels. Harrow is a bad teammate because that’s what the story needs her to be, so I explore ways to make a Harrow who feels like Harrow and isn’t a bad teammate.
And finally, because I feel like neglecting Fire Emblem is a real waste of an opportunity, just last month, I looked at Sothe from Path of Radiance. I liked how this one involved thinking around the definition of what a ‘build’ is for this kind of character, and talked about ways that you can translate the vibes of a character to a new form.
Check it out on PRESS.exe to see it with images and links!

Last year, in my country (Argentina) there was a statement sent to Cartoon Network (the company in charge of distributing the series on tv, essentially a channel meant for children) by the Women, Gender and Diversity Ministry complaining about some of Master Roshi's scenes in DB and Z. The statement demanded that they had to be cut bc they were inappropriate and normalized problematic behaviors like sexual harassment. It is my understanding the company actually agreed and said they would cut those, but I don't know whether they carried through with it.
Anyways, the situation caused quite an enthusiastic debate on the "adult" side of the fandom: lots of people agreed with CN's decision whereas some said that this was a mistake, for it took away the show's authenticity and that the matter wasn't that serious anyways.
I guess my question is, has some discussion like this ever happened in the japanese community/fandom? I know the "perv" character archetype is very common in anime, so I am curious about whether there are different takes/opinions on this matter.
And thank you for this blog!! It is really interesting :)
Ouah that letter took its sweet time arriving to CN!! XD
The Ministry is not wrong I believe, but gotta give it some context: DB Roshi (anime version) dates from 1986 and the "old teacher is very skilled in his craft but is also a pervert that we have to deal with" trope is so important and ubiquitous...
I might go on a tangent but systemic issues require systemic explanations :') My apologies in advance for the length!
If anything, Roshi (Kame Sennin; old turtle hermit) gets punished for his misdeeds (shot, punched, bullied by blonde Lauch, Bulma and Chichi)... Happosai (Ranma 1/2) is another example of punishing such behaviors (while Jiraiya and Kakashi in Naruto aren't really called out on their different instances of lewdness, for instance, and neither is Tsunade's focus on keeping a youthful appearance).
Nudity in DB is usually played for laughs and gag (the invisible man fight, the kids fighting Goku in the bath, Goku removing Bulma's panties and being traumatized by the absence of balls and her believing he's talking about the dragon balls...). Since nudity in and out of itself isn't really a problem in Japanese culture either.
The old man's perversity is also present in other characters in DB and Z. Bulma's father's hidden sexy magazine (she took the wrong capsule and both her parents request of Bulma to wish them each a nice young lady/young manr (canon swinger couple lmao)), Elder Kaioshin who won't help Goku unless he gets a cute girl to kiss him (and volunteers Bulma when Gohan refuses Videl, while arguing with Vegeta that "Chichi is not cute/not to his taste". ...), and Grandpa Gohan who doesn't want to come back to life because "Heaven is full of babes"...
There are, however, problematic elements concerning Roshi that aren't addressed: how Roshi asks Krillin and Goku to bring him a girl, and they just.. do it, and then (blue) Launch just.. accepts staying there?? Also no police is involved and Roshi groping around people that aren't named isn't addressed much either.
Hell over time it’s become “worse” in a sense that now girls just scream instead of beating the hell out of Roshi?
Chichi going from a fighter and martial artist to housewife and mom (and the anime really really hurts her into tiger mom trope), Videl going mom too, the situation with Ranfan in the tournament is played for laughs but if you scratch the surface, there's no girls in any of the tournaments (and when they do, they get wrecked :(.. apart from 18 and Pan at the very end). Bulma also gets mommified and goes from badass (and shallow when the world isn't in danger) to using the DBs for cosmetic wishes when the world is in danger :-/
There's a societal problem about the role of (married) women in Japan for sure, and I could write a whole sociological essay, but if anything in the 80s, Bulma was an alien: Non Love Interest to the MC, badass and having her own personality, had a lot of agency.
And she's the one who refused marriage!
Tumblr media
I think deciding if the censorship was a good idea or not really depends on a lot of factors; I'd personally say DB shows Roshi's pervert side as a character flaw that's being criticized (and in DBS Roshi actually fights that part of himself and becomes stronger by renouncing that side of him, somehow!).
I also personally think it sparks a discussion about it and could be good content to bounce off and talk to children about appropriate behavior (and afaik DB goes to great lengths to show it as a bad thing, but I also recognize some kids will completely miss the point <_<).
Japan has very strict views on gender roles and on what's allowed and accepted in terms of societal expectations (the country is very conservative too...); younger generations are more vocal about it, but considering the median age of those in charge of making decisions (including what gets serialized in magazines and what gets an anime adaptation), change is slow. Very slow :(
I've talked to a few people and they've told me something in these lines in terms of the role of women (because basically Roshi's behavior is also linked to that...) :
The "mommification" of Chichi, Videl, 18 (arguably) and Bulma is also Toei/Shueisha taking control over "what we want to portray, politically". As an IP, Dragon Ball "now" needs to fit a certain role model and represent society in a certain way to reinforce such roles. The IP isn't just an artistic creation anymore, it's a brand that has "societal obligations" (in a way; there's still a few subversive moments here and there but...).
In DBGT, Pan had to be the damsel in distress, this was her role in the whole series... Toriyama (when he said he didn't know how to design a female saiyan) and Toei staff couldn't even figure out how to SSJ her at the time. This was thankfully changed in DBS through Caulifla and Kale, as well as Kefla, but they still lose (differently in the manga and in the anime but still noteworthy).
Bulma is now a supporting wife to her husband (so they did end up getting married). Chichi remains the tiger-mom archetype, if anything. Videl was more or less fridged for Gohan's benefit in the Buu saga, and didn't even show up in the latest movie (!); they say she's a martial arts teacher but she has almost no agency or involvement (how cool would it have been for Pan to have been saved by the Great Saiyaman duo?). Videl just so happens to be a womb for the next generation? As in, literally for the SSJG transformation.
(Adult) Pan is often "Nadeshiko'd" in doujinshis because people rely on tropes to know what they're buying and what to expect. Mai became this too; a proper stern polite formal beauty with bangs and a princess (hime) haircut.
And then there's Bra and the long forgotten Marron.
So yeah. A lot of "Mondays suck" approach to this issue (Modays suck = it is what it is and we must endure it), but DB (at least the 42 initial volumes) wasn't outrageously glorifying the perversion and doesn't feel like like the message is "this is ok behavior". I don't think anyone reading/watching any DB considers Roshi to be a good role model or even someone to look up to or was ever described as "cool" (except by Goku who honestly doesn't know any better), including in DBS.
But then again, deep down, I believe the problem is how people aren't educated to have some media analysis minds anymore (re: people who completely miss the point of Fight Club and American History X, for instance).
I will do another check in with my pals (especially those who are less involved with the Western fandom/ideas) ^^
