that's basically how Rapture went
[ID: Three screencaps from Star Trek DS9 with tumblr textposts overtop. The first screencap shows Julian Bashir looking down and speaking with a concerned expression. The textpost by @kalgalen reads "you're not ascending to godhood you're just dehydrated." The second screencap shows Captain Sisko staring ahead with an optimistic or speculative expression. A reblog from the first post by @podcastwizard reads "outta my way gayboy i'm boutta liberate my divine self from the mortal shell." The third screenshot shows Captain Sisko unconscious on a biobed with people standing around him. another reblog by the same user reads "hopital" /End description]

The Wire - Rapture
I'm simply not going to walk out of here and let you die.
If I don't operate, sir, you could die...I can't go against the decision of my patient.

The Emissary is having floor time.

I loved this scene:
Kira: I know you're worried. But the Prophets are leading the Emissary on this path for a reason.
Worf: Do not attempt to convince them, Major. They cannot understand.
Dax: Since when did you believe in the Prophets?
Worf: What I believe in... is faith. Without it there can be no victory. If the Captain's faith is strong, he will prevail.
Dax: That's not much to bet his life on.
Kira: You're wrong. It's everything.

Someone brought an overhated character poll to my dash about Kai Winn and im literally so sad about the responses. I knew there were people who hated her but it's really baffling to me how maybe 10 people tops acknowledge her past and the reasonings behind her choices, they just see a space Karen.
oh dude, i'm sorry that sucks. and "sad" really is a simple but fairly complete word when it comes to the character of winn adami, huh.
like. i think a lot about how she's the most normal-looking woman on the show. she is also, simply, normal. she is faithful and political and appears and acts in ways far more familiar to us than most characters. even the fact of her alien-faith hardly serves to alienate, given that she is faithful in the way we might be--without true expectation of ever meeting the divine in this life. while kira can seem more like a fictional character when she speaks of the prophets, due to her proximity to them, winn sounds like the person accosting you on a street corner to talk about the rapture.
that's the thing, though, isn't it. about the "karen" phenomenon in general. there is nothing uniquely bad about middle-aged white women--nothing that makes them uniquely ungovernable in social spheres in ways men aren't. in ways everyone isn't, in some way. (merely anecdotal evidence, but my own experience in the service industry made me far more wary of men in their 30s wearing patagonia vests over dress-shirts). winn adami is a normal sort of frustration to people. one they encounter in the day-to-day. the political conservative who stands outside of planned parenthood and tells girls not to throw away their everlasting souls. the pentecostal women speaking gibberish in church, gesturing to the heavens with their out-of-fashion french manicures, who brought a tater-tot hot dish with extra kraft cheese to the pot luck. the women with cross-walls. with like. so many crosses. the women with leathery tans on the aging skin of their arms and neck. the women who quietly walk into voting booths around the world and choose "safety" over anything else, whether or not that "safety" is real.
at least. that's who people think winn is. setting aside the fact that most people don't truly know the kinds of women listed above, that it's unlikely they've spared a single ounce of pity for women like that ever in their entire lives, winn is not exactly pitiable in this way. she is awash in power. she is intelligent. she thinks. she would stand in a voting booth and choose "safety" (whether or not it's real) but she's not the lady wearing a t-shirt that says trump could grab her pussy if he wanted. she's not one of the many blonde women on fox news. she's not even sandra day o'connor or any other female conservative intellectual. because she's a metaphor.
we don't know her real-world politics because she's a fictional character in a fictional universe leading a fictional world. we know she's a conservative because fights very very hard to maintain the status quo regarding her bajoran religion and its teachings. but we don't know how any of that can be truly allegorized to conservative policies in the real-world. the main tension being: conservatives in the real-world base a lot of truly evil policy on a made-up divine figure interpreted through thousands of made-up hermeneutics and it is materially all Not Real. in ds9, the prophets are actual beings who affect reality. winn's said and done things on the show that sound like something an annoying woman with a turquoise-cross around her neck would say at a utah city council meeting about creationism and "inappropriate books." she also says things that a woman would say at a protest against the racist and paternalistic policies of the british museum. all we know of her as a political figure is that she is conservative. and like, power-hungry and desperate, but those aren't essentially related. she wants to conserve. and that encompasses more than one thing.
which means that people, when they see her, simply aren't thinking. they react to a woman who looks as she does. who speaks like a politician. who makes decisions that are unfair. but, exactly as you said, the show grounds her. they give her a past. they richly flesh out so much about her. they have her acting too rationally sometimes for someone of her professed faith. they have her acting completely irrational as her gods reject her again and again. all while she clings to them with a faith that endured actual torture at the hands of violent imperialists who yet attack her planet and yet attack her and yet she has to speak with as the leader of bajor.
and it's hard to see (beyond the obvious) why this character receives so much vitriol when you have characters like garak and dukat and kira who all are considered charming and beloved in some way or another, while still being as complex as they are. (and i don't even think dukat is all that complex.) even sisko has some moments that, if i lived in his world, i would be somewhat repulsed by--like when jake begs him to let the prophets go and sisko embraces the cosmic over the request of his son. (again: the prophets are real though, so my "repulsion" is more a reaction against people i see as priests, who i find in the real world, as a rule, awful.)
so. it's definitely sad. because the level and kind of hate bestowed upon this character really does seem to be a symptom of a much larger issue: of course, misogyny.
also that people don't tend to think.

I've watched DS9 many times but I'm curious about how Kira sees Winn Adami in your opinion.
well I think Kira's opinion of Winn evolves a bit over the years, and to trace it more precisely I'd have to rewatch the Winn episodes but in general: I think Kira sees Winn as someone that would have points to make if only she didn't want to be in the limelight all the time.
I'm fairly sure Kira sees Winn's protagonism as a sort of betrayal of the spirit of what a Vedek (and then Kai) is supposed to be, an office of service to the Bajoran believers first and foremost. That's I think why Kira likes Bareil a lot more and supported his candidacy to Kai even though he seemed to be quite a bit more liberal than Kira is about theological matters. Bareil is just as humble and hard-working as Kira is, and it's a quality she respects in other people.
Then of course Kira's opinion of Winn gets worse and worse: she manages to steal the Kai's election by exploiting a secret that Bareil was keeping, she's ultimately responsible for Bareil's death and then Winn's terrible stint as Prime Minister. I didn't think anyone could come back from that series of events but it speaks to both the writing, which makes Winn if not sympathetic at least not so outwardly antagonistic after the events of "Rapture", and Kira's character that ultimately she still listens to Winn when she confesses in S7 that she's never actually heard the voice of the Prophets. I'm sure that must've been a 'that explains a lot' moment for Kira, but it's also another situation where the deep rift between how these two characters approach their roles comes out—when Kira tells her to step down (for her the only logical choice! you can't be Kai if you don't have the most basic mandate from the Prophets), Winn simply can't imagine not being at the centre of the efforts to keep Bajor safe, thereby also confirming the idea Kira's always had of her.
tl;dr I think they ultimately want the same thing (Bajor's independence and safety for the Bajoran population) but Kira is an effective leader for the same reason Winn isn't; Kira doesn't think of herself as that 'important' in what she knows is a collective and concerted effort (even back during the Resistance) while Winn always wants to be the protagonist, the one that signs treaties and delivers freedom to her people. And this difference creates a deep dislike between two women who would have otherwise understood each other a little more, I think.

Ask Game!
Thank you to @sapphosewrites for thinking of me for this <3
How many works do you have on AO3?
I'm almost up there with Sapphose-- I've got 141, though I really need to finish tranferring my really old fics from my fanfiction.net account.
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
Those 141 fics give me a grand total of 969,127 words.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
My biggest fandoms are The Penumbra Podcast, Star Trek: Deep Space 9, Welcome To Night Vale (that's an oldie, hot damn) and Les Miserables, with Les Mis being the most recent one I've been active in.
4. Top 5 Fics By Kudos
I'm honestly surprised that Haunting, but not haunted (Penumbra Podcast ghost AU) has overtaken The Issue of Omniscience (WTNV). Just Like an Angel (WTNV Wingfic) ranks just behind those two, then The Case Files of J. Steel (a very very large Penumbra Poscast one-shot collection). What surprised me was I Could Be Your Own Avenging Angel (DS9 alternate take on Empok Nor) making the top five-- apparently that one's gotten some recs lately, which pleases me immensely. The fact that all of these are fairly sexy is not a surprise to me.
5. Do you respond to comments?
I read them all, I squee in delight at them all, but a lot of times I'm just flummoxed about what to say in response. I know theoretically just a quick 'thank you' is appropriate, but it feels... I dunno, trite?
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Listen, I'm an absolute sucker for angst, but I tend to go with bittersweet rather than outright angst in the ending.
Just a Little Wooden Boy (OFMD) is the most recent, and plays hard with the idea of deep hurt turning love into something cold that can't be fixed. (Like a Terrier (Sherlock) has a similar vibe.)
Stay With Me (Wolf 359) just plain tragedy. Eiffel succumbs to the Decima virus, the other humans are forced to flee the station, and so Hera is left to comfort him in his final hours. It's in the same vein as The Way Things End (Supernatural) and Off the Path (Bioshock Infinite) where they're very much about accepting death when it can't be fought anymore-- but in the other two, there's the hope of accompanying your loved one on the other side, where Hera is now just trapped alone with her grief and the body of her friend.
7. What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I genuinely don't know how you would even go about judging that.
Most of my multichapter fics end with the idea that there's still work to be done-- causes to fight for, mental illness to struggle against, relationship issues to work out. The thing is that they now have a framework for dealing with the problem at hand.
So given that-- Of the Rapture That Impels (Les Miserables) deals with sinking into grief and despair and ends with actually being able to see a light at the end, which is pretty much the epitome of a happy ending in my book.
Skin and Scales (Penumbra Podcast) has the most classically happy ending, I think.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Thank all that is holy, I haven't gotten direct hate on fics since high school-- the fandoms I've been in have been lovely, and anyone who has unkind things to say about them has been polite enough to do it where I don't need to see it.
9. Do you write smut?
Yup.
10. Craziest crossover
I almost never do crossovers, actually. But years ago (so long ago that it hasn't actually been migrated to AO3 yet) I wrote a 9/Labyrinth crossover in which 7 was in fact Sarah, transfigured by the Goblin King in order to save her from the machine apocalypse.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I think they might have been yanked over to wattpad or whatever once or twice. It happens, it gets reported, I move on.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I don't believe so-- or if it's happened, it was long enough ago that I've forgotten.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes. And let me tell you, I am very bad at being a co-writer. The more successful stuff looks less like co-writing and more like parallel play in the same sandbox.
14. All time favorite ship?
I'm with Sapphose here in that I don't have one favorite ship, so much as I have a favorite dynamic. I'm a sucker for damaged, self-loathing characters who are so determined to do right by the person they love that they wind up becoming better (stronger, happier) people for it.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Just one?
Probably A Dynasty of Liars (DS9). I love that story so much, but I genuinely have no idea where it would go next or how I would execute it.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I'm told that my angst is pretty damn solid, and that I can get voices pretty well.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Scene transitions, and particularly those detailed descriptions where we describe where we're at. It's one of the things I can get away with more in fanfic than in original writing, because a couple references will convey which setpiece we're in so I don't have to do the work. In anything remotely original, that's a much bigger problem.
18. Thoughts on dialogue in another language?
I'm in camp 'translate if the POV character knows it', with the addendum that "and they continued to speak in[language]" tends to be much more effective than actually writing long stretches of that other language, particularly if it's one that the writer isn't fluent in. If the reader doesn't know the second language, it conveys about as much as a keysmash. If they do, then you're prone to embarrassing goofs where you translate something badly without knowing.
19. First fandom you wrote in?
Lord of the Rings. A self-insert, Boromir-lives AU.
20. Favorite fic you've written?
Pretty much any longfic that I've actually completed, I think. But lately, I'm partial to A Change of a Bizarre Kind (Les Miserables), because I did some stuff with the POV and structure that I'm really proud of.
Now that you've gotten to see me ramble, I'll go ahead and tag @ryosei-hime, @aftershocked, and @alecjmarsh

now it's time for a proper star trek update. i am sooo behind. monday we did voy's "the q and the grey," made it about 11 minutes in before quitting and switching to ds9's "the ascent" and then did ds9's "rapture," and then later that evening i finished "the q and the grey" on my OWN, then on tuesday we did voy's "marcocosm" and "fair trade" which means we accidentally went a little out of order (we were supposed to hit another ds9 ep first).
the q and the grey (voy):
as mentioned above, we got. 11 minutes. into this episode. rough!
there's normally very little sexism on this show which is like. despite this show's tone being similar to tng's, a better cast and less sexism put it MILES ahead of tng in my opinion. but for some reason you put q in a room with janeway and WOW. the harassment, the casual "kathy," the belittlement...like, it was kind of funny in CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES when it was picard but it looks sooo different when he is doing this to a woman. like, he wasn't trying to have picard's baby, was he
not to mention he's always a little racist to chakotay, which is even more unfunny than him being fantasy racist to worf. him stealing the tattoo wasn't like. funny or quirky. jesus
also. CIVIL WAR COSTUMES? REALLY? REALLY??? they cast q's side as the yanks but like...he's rebelling against the government, so............
anyway, this episode had two redeeming moments for me. first was when chakotay was jealous i did holler. second was when janeway decided to "watch" the two qs procreate and then it was just a little zap, which i did think was really funny. other than that, it was ALL bad. i checked and we have one q episode left and then thank god i don't see his ass again until lower decks
the ascent (ds9):
THE MOST EP EVER. i'm normally "eh" on quark/odo but i really enjoyed this episode mostly because even when they were trying to survive they could NOT stop arguing
also, it did wonders for quark, like...he's the reason odo's leg got broken and he made it to the top and saved him. furthermore, he hates root beer, but bought some for nog. i love when quark has little hints of having a soul. like when he sold food at cost for bajorans. we don't need much, just more than we got in season 3
also, rom was in this ep :')
going from like the existential mountain climb back to the silly little odd couple b plot was INSANE whiplash, by the way
i do love how much of an artist jake is. he wants to wake up at 1pm have junk for breakfast and spend all day working on his fanfic while cleaning never. maybe he wanted to move out so sisko wouldn't nag him to clean so much
ALSO, AWW, JAKE MOVING OUT...my best friend sisko was so emotional. please. i love him so much
i did also like that the solution to the odd couple problem in both the instances of jake and nog and odo and quark was to simply invent a bigger problem. for odo and quark it's the mountain but for jake and nog it's not being roomies anymore. they were so happy when sisko forced them to get back together they instantly forgave each other's flaws which is heartwarming but also extremely fucking funny
rapture (ds9):
the title, i know, i know, i KNOW. i almost typed "THE rapture" like twice, nobody say anything, fuck
did not love this episode BUT i made it through the entire thing without calling kai wynn a bitch
i actually liked the depth they gave her in this ep, though it's not enough to make the character fun for me. she just takes such relish in being cruel for the sake of her faith, i can't stand it
kira also wearing blinders this episode :/ it's not that i don't think she should have a faith but i wish it didn't make her stupid. like, oh let's let sisko die from his visions! let's be an artist instead of a soldier! because some guy said to! come on
poor kassidy having just got out of prison and now she gets back to sisko being like. totally fucking crazy. i do like that she and jake have bonded though. i hope she makes him a great stepmother someday
i feel like this plot is gonna come back later...? i've read Some Things about sisko. i will say i'm curious to see where it goes. at the same time, i can't believe he chose his visions over JAKE when we all saw how jake was in the visitor and i'm kind of mad he didn't so much as apologize for putting jake in that position. it doesn't really feel like he ever came back to his "right mind." i hope he's not like that for the rest of the series lol
macrocosm (voy):
JANEWAY HOT!!!!!!!!!! this is so rough for me because i've never found her like stupid attractive before but wow the laura croft look really did it for me. i wish chakotay could have seen it 🫡
sorry i know there are other things to say about this episode. ummm it's much funnier post covid. the giant viruses. i wish they hadn't made them so buglike though
very fun that the doctor had gone full apocalypse mode. it makes absolutely NO sense how he was able to infect everyone if he wasn't real though...that's the whole reason they sent him down
the prosthetics in this were very cool. the cgi effects were very silly
fair trade (voy):
SSSSSSIGH
the conceit of this episode was so fucking stupid. like, what about any of them makes neelix think they're gonna toss him out for being useless. kes is also useless, they don't NEED a nurse, but they're not throwing her out. a single conversation could have solved all of this
i thought that guy wix looked so familiar i was struggling to remember what he did in voyager, but no, i made that up.
on the other hand, i did like seeing vorik again! i remembered him from tng because of how fucking good his spock mannerisms were. like, not his name or anything he actually DID on tng, just how good he was at being a vulcan. i hope he comes back trek DESPERATELY needs more vulcans. maybe he and tuvok hang out and find peace in nobody pestering them about having emotions lol
anyway, i do love that janeway gave him hell at the end for it though. like that time she lectured b'elanna and tuvok and they wanted to die. AND she did it to chakotay once too. one thing she will do is shame somebody for being fucking stupid <3 may everyone on the cast get one before the series is over
TONIGHT: voy's "ater ego" and ds9's "the darkness and the light"

conduit
[Kira/Winn, ~300 words, rated M]
“I’m holding you responsible for this,” Kai Winn huffed haughtily.
Kira restrained herself from rolling her eyes, barely. The Kai had made her own choice to stay on the station after the rest of her Vedek entourage headed back to Bajor by passenger shuttle, to continue chewing Sisko out. It was hardly Kira’s fault that the next shuttle to Bajor had been temporarily grounded for major repairs, nor that all the station runabouts were unavailable too.
“You’ll be on your way soon,” she said with all the patience in the world.
“That’s not good enough, my child,” Winn condescended. “You know perfectly well that it’s time for someone to tend to me. As the Kai, I must remain an open conduit to the Prophets. Find me a suitable vessel, and all will be well.”
Kira sighed. If Winn didn’t even consider any of the station Ranjens or Prylars suitable, which clearly she did not, then surely she wouldn’t stoop to paying a Dabo girl to fuck her into the rapturous ecstasy that was her duty as Kai to experience regularly. Well, fine. Kira didn’t want to subject anyone else to dealing with Winn’s unpleasantness anyway.
But she did want her Kai to stay open to the Prophets. She’d felt that kind of clarity herself in the throes of her own pleasure, and she knew it was holy…
She stepped forward.
“Am I… suitable?” she asked through gritted teeth. (She found herself half hoping for a no, even though that would entail more work for her.)
Kai Winn glanced her up and down. “You’ll do,” she said, still frowning. She sat down in the nearest chair, then gathered the front hem of her robes and spread her legs apart.
Kira knelt down, and let the Prophets guide her.

i feel lie the writers were fighting over kai winn about whether or not she would be a morally grey or outright evil character and i'm really disappointed that they stuck with the easy way out and just made her bad :/

“Rapture” (S05E10, Stardate Unknown) is a phenomenal episode containing Federation and Bajoran politics, deep conversations, spiritualism, family and so much more. And at the core is a struggle between balancing faith, duty and family. Every time I watch Rapture I gain something new from the experience.
