secretly got to touch grass today

Cannot believe how many west african rainbow lizards there are now. They’re more common than iguanas.

They started popping up a few years ago and now you can’t go outside without seeing them it’s crazy

#even iguanas used to be a rare sight #now all you have to do is look at the grass around any canal and you’ll see them #I barely see small lizards anymore. just big ones. it’s so weird #used to be the opposite #I also found a possum skeleton but I couldn’t take it #didn’t have a bag with me and it wasn’t clean enough to touch #<- Inb4 anyone asks. A jaguar has been caught on camera in the Huachuca Mountains twice so far this year, marking the first confirmed sightings of the endangered cat species since 2017 in the range about 90 miles southeast of Tucson.

#ra speaks #personal #help girl ppl are being mean about things again #like first of all no this wasn’t a case of indigenous ppl being like ‘yeah the dinosaur is alive and well my grandma feeds it dinner scraps’#and Scientists (who apparently you assume to all be white Europeans) being like uhhh no sweatie :) it’s extinct but we’ll look for it lol #and then catching the dinosaur in 4K eating grandmas dinner scraps like oh shit we rediscovered the dinosaur!!!#this was a case of ‘this animal is so rare and so little is known abt it that indigenous people predict it sounds like these other birds so #it might still exist even if no one has seen and reported a sighting’#and Scientists (including indigenous researchers) using local knowledge to maximize their chances of documenting this species #they work together people!! and even if it was the first case which is patronizing and othering it’s still damn important to #document species in multiple verifiable ways to prove their existence!#even the ivory billed woodpecker would need photographic or video documentation. word of mouth reports cannot be validated.

Big Kiddo, sighing in an almost prayer-like way, watching his absolute favourite birds - the Victoria crowned pigeon - wander around a safe distance from him at the zoo: "I would so love to pet them..."

Me: "I understand, but I don't think they want to be touched by zoo visitors and we have to respect their wish."

Big Kiddo, with the tone of complete, soothing 'Don't worry about it!' in his voice: "Oh no, I mean when we'll keep our own."

#he's too precious #fun fact you CAN actually keep them domestically. but they're rare around here and very expensive to get #I'll keep it on my list for things to look into if we ever get rich and buy a house with a huge yard lol #he's so obsessed with these birds lol #as a toddler he was DEADLY AFRAID of them. he'd see one and JUMP into my arms from standing. it was a sight to behold lmao #then he got over his fear and now they're his special interest #i can FEEL the love and adoration and 'engaging in special interest' RADIATING from him when he watches them #it's so precious #lmao so he already made plans lmao #he was so matter of fact and calming my worries like no no don't worry I'm not harassing the zoo animals. I think I might’ve seen a golden eagle today.

Big-ass fucking bird, swooping halfway across the road to attempt to hover right ahead of my car, low enough that if not for being inside of a car I would’ve been covering my head.

#it was definitely a bird of prey - the wingspan was ''about the width of my car'' - and its head looked golden compared to the rest #could it have been something else? sure. dunno what but sure. - but they do supposedly spend the winter here so...#and like... i cannot emphasize this enough. that was a big fucking bird. i remember seagulls with wingspans my height (as a kid)#this felt bigger than that - which would put it at about the right wingspan - and i dunno what else it could've been #i've also spent like 5+ hours driving a car today - and at least half of that was daytime - which is rare for me #so maybe they're a more common sight in the area than i knew - but it was... an experience #personal stuff #cute animal #birds
