Trail cameras in the mountains of Turkey captured a rare sighting of a leopard species previously considered extinct for decades, officials said. The Anatolian leopard was filmed prowling around the mountains in two separate regions, Turkey’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said in a Thursday, Jan. 26, news release. Vahit Kirişci, a ministry official, shared footage of the wildcat on Facebook. [...] Anatolian leopards are an endangered species, Turkish officials said. The last leopard was thought to be killed in 1974, and the species was considered extinct for 45 years. However, a male Anatolian leopard was spotted in 2019. Researchers have traced the rare leopard species to four regions in Turkey, but little is known about the animal’s population size and distribution, according to the release. [...] Turkish officials did not specify where the leopard was seen or when the different videos were taken. Experts estimate only 10 to 15 Anatolian leopards still live in the wild, according to Biology Online. [...]

For context, the historic and current distribution range of the leopard:
Tumblr media
Leopards are now extinct across most of their former habitat throughout Asia. Most of this extinction happened only since 1900 AD.
The “Anatolian leopard” of the Anatolian peninsula and eastern Mediterranean is sometimes considered to be a variation of and synonymous with the so-called “Persian leopard” which lives nearby in the Caucasus and Persia. Together, the Anatolian and Persian leopards are referred to either as Panthera pardus saxicolor or Panthera pardus tulliana.
Here is the current known distribution range of the recognized subspecies of leopard. On this map, the Anatolian and Persian leopards are labeled as “P.p. saxicolor” range and shown in orange color:

IJ Gang+ Fursonas/Favorite Animals
VERY brief thoughts on everyone’s fursonas/favorite animals because I want to post art-
Andre
Would be a ferret for obvious reasons - skinny, mischievous, probably a little stinky ? It’s uncanny
His personal favorite animal is absolutely smthn unconventional tho - a wacky bug or lizard, maybe some kind of bioluminescent sea creature for the rave vibes ?
For sure the type to change his answer every time anyone asks
Brett
Obvious sona choice is a golden retriever because,,, yeah <3 but CONSIDER- a tiger ?? I will not elaborate
I don’t think he could pick just one animal as his favorite if you asked him to -
In my mind he’s like,, a terrible Snow White (/affectionate) ??? He loves and tries to befriend every animal he comes across and is,, not very successful most of the time-
Gigi
Is saying her sona would be a leopard a cop out ? It just fits so well (elegant and dangerous ??) it’s not my fault she also wears the pattern everywhere-
She’s definitely an animal person (if she wasn’t so busy she’d have so many pets </3) but birds are her #1 - brightly colored exotic ones ofc but she also just really likes birdwatching on early mornings
(She absolutely has a separate insta just for archiving all of the pictures she takes-)
Reagan
Begging forgiveness for my basic answer but,, she’s a house cat </3
She’s just got cat vibes !!! It’s the autism I know it (alternatively some kind of fox maybe ? I keep flip flopping-)
She seems like the kind of person to have a really obscure or extinct favorite animal ? Like a really fucked up creature from the Cambrian Period - but she’s also absolutely a cat person
Myc
Honestly I don’t think I’ll make him a sona because he’s already not human-
As for his favorite animal he,,, doesn’t have one ? He isn’t really an animal person, even if he can tolerate them - definitely likes bugs more (and it’s totally NOT because he spent most of his childhood with only them for company, that would be ridiculous)
(He is absolutely the type to chase someone around with little creepy crawlies if he finds out they’re scared of them-)
Glenn
Very torn between his sona being a bull or some kind of big livestock guardian dog - Anatolian Shepherd maybe ? (Of course he’d still be half dolphin)
DOG PERSON no one will ever change my mind-
His family ABSOLUTELY had dogs when he was a kid and he’s still really fond of them even if he can’t keep any
Alpha-Beta
OUGH okay my immediate thought for his sona was a bear which,,, given his history he would HATE-
But it’s perfect ? Big and strong ?? But S OFT ??? I refuse to consider other animals
He insists he doesn’t have a favorite animal but he’s absolutely got a soft spot for orcas (he watched the Seaworld documentary </3)
(THE PRESIDENT IS A SAINT BERNARD I know this in my heart, big goofy dog man, it’s probably even his favorite animal he just seems like a dog person (,,, based entirely on everyone else’s (incredible) headcanons lmao-))
J.R.
Almost went with a mongoose just for the bit- but no this man is OBVIOUSLY a ram. I can’t explain it at all he just is.
And he HATES animals - he can tolerate the ones that don’t come to him looking for attention but beyond that, no absolutely NOT get it away from him
If he had to pick he’d say fish, just because they can be relaxing to watch (please god let this man relax-)

Just some exploration of outfits - to the left is the minimalist theory of what Paris is wearing (though sans bow) in Book 3 of the Iliad. Absolutely no chest armour, (too small lol shh) leopard pelt pinned in what seems to be Luwian/Hittite fashion and also is used in later Classical Antiquity in western Anatolia. I'm assuming he does have greaves, since the only piece of armour he's specifically noted as having to borrow for the duel is the chest armour. To the right is one of two attempts at figuring out what's going on on the seal of a western Anatolian/Luwian ruler in terms of clothing/cloak (I don't THINK the overgarment can reasonably be anything but a cloak of some sort). This one with some minor cutting/shaping of the fabric and the other with less.

XXL Dog Breeds: A Comprehensive Guide
Owning an XXL dog breed is a unique and fulfilling experience, offering the companionship of a truly remarkable pet. However, these large dogs come with specific needs that require thoughtful consideration. From their towering presence to their loyal and protective nature, XXL dogs demand specialised care, attention, and equipment. This guide will provide you with valuable insights into what defines an XXL dog, explore popular breeds, outline essential care practices, and help you choose the best equipment, including XXL dog crates, to ensure your giant friend thrives in your home.
What is Considered an XXL Dog?
When we talk about XXL dogs, we're referring to canines that weigh well over 100 pounds and stand tall enough to command attention wherever they go. These dogs aren't just large—they're enormous, often requiring more space, food, and care than smaller breeds.
Popular XXL Dog BreedsSome of the most well-known XXL dog breeds include the majestic Great Dane, the powerful Mastiff, and the sturdy Saint Bernard. However, there are many other breeds that fall into the XXL category, particularly those that weigh between 91 and 110 pounds. These breeds include:
Afghan: 91 - 110 lbs
Akita: 91 - 110 lbs
Alaskan Malamute: 91 - 110 lbs
Anatolian Shepherd: 91 - 110 lbs
Bernese Mountain Dog: 91 - 110 lbs
Bloodhound: 91 - 110 lbs
Boerboel: 91 - 110 lbs
Bouvier Des Flandres: 91 - 110 lbs
Briard: 91 - 110 lbs
Bullmastiff: 91 - 110 lbs
Catahoula Leopard Dog: 91 - 110 lbs

Old English Sheepdog: 91 - 110 lbs
Otterhound: 91 - 110 lbs
Pointer: 91 - 110 lbs
Rottweiler: 91 - 110 lbs
Samoyed: 91 - 110 lbs
Siberian Husky: 91 - 110 lbs
Tervueren: 91 - 110 lbs
Weimaraner: 91 - 110 lbs
Exploring XXL Dog Breeds
Breed Characteristics
XXL dog breeds are known for their impressive stature, but there's more to them than just size. Great Danes, for example, are known for their gentle and affectionate nature, making them excellent family pets despite their imposing size. Mastiffs are incredibly loyal and protective, often serving as excellent guard dogs. Saint Bernards, with their history of rescue work in the Alps, are known for their strength and stamina.
Temperament and Behavior
While XXL dog breeds can vary in temperament, many share a common disposition of loyalty, protectiveness, and a calm demeanour. They tend to bond closely with their families and can be very affectionate, though their size means they must be trained and socialised properly from a young age to ensure they are well-behaved.
Choosing the Right Breed for You
Selecting the right XXL dog breed involves considering your lifestyle, living situation, and experience with dogs. If you have a large home with a spacious yard, a Mastiff or Saint Bernard might be a good fit. However, if you prefer a dog with a bit more agility and energy, a Great Dane might be more up your alley. Be sure to research each breed thoroughly to find the best match for your family.
Special Care Needs of XXL Dogs
Dietary Requirements
Feeding an XXL dog is no small task. These large breeds require a diet rich in protein and nutrients to support their massive frames. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, which can exacerbate health issues like joint problems, so it's crucial to maintain a balanced diet.
Exercise Needs
Regular exercise is vital for XXL dogs to keep their muscles strong and joints healthy. Due to their size, they may not need as much intense exercise as smaller, more energetic breeds, but daily walks and playtime are essential to prevent obesity and keep them mentally stimulated.
Health Concerns
XXL breeds are prone to certain health issues due to their size. Hip dysplasia, heart problems, and joint issues are common concerns. Regular vet check-ups, a healthy diet, and proper exercise can help mitigate these risks and ensure your dog lives a long, happy life.
Choosing the Right Equipment for XXL Dogs
Leashes and Harnesses
When it comes to leashes and harnesses, durability is key. XXL dogs are strong, and a flimsy leash won't cut it. Look for heavy-duty options that are comfortable for your dog but can also handle their strength.
Beds and Crates
Choosing the right bed and crate for your XXL dog is crucial. An appropriately sized crate provides a safe space for your dog to relax and sleep. When selecting a crate, it's essential to consider options specifically designed for XXL Dog Crates for Extra-Large Breeds to ensure your dog's comfort and security.
Grooming Tools
Grooming an XXL dog requires tools that can handle their thick coats and large bodies. Invest in sturdy brushes, combs, and clippers designed for large breeds to keep their coat healthy and reduce shedding.

chapter 2 is in production so here's some concept art to hold you over

my concept sketches for Dionysus, he trains the cupbearers (Iris, Hebe, and Ganymede) as his way of getting into the Olympian counsel after Hestia gave up her position. he's the first demi-god turned god to join the Olympians so he has to work hard to prove himself. he's burnt out but does his best.
Hestia left for a reason but she never told him why, all Dionysus knew is that she gave him the position and he took it. but was that really such a good idea?

im interested in gods on a zoological level, the way they have animals associated with them and come from different ecosystems. Dionysus is a terrestrial god and is more mammalian, his animal form is an Anatolian leopard.
i will post more about my god biology and that kind of world building stuff soon
