When studying astrology, it’s always best to set a foundation before digging into the signs, as they primarily derive meaning from the planets. As a student learning traditional, Hellenistic astrology, this foundation does not include assigning rulership to the modern planets: Uranus (♅), Neptune (♆), and Pluto (♇). Not to say they hold no meaning, but they won’t provide a full understanding of the planets they influence.

Before the discoveries of Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, in the Hellenistic period— even in the very beginning of Astrology as a practice— sight has always been important, marking Saturn as the last traditional planet.

For clarification, the traditional planets in Chaldean order are: Saturn (♄), Jupiter (♃), Mars (♂), Sun (☉), Venus (♀), Mercury (☿), Moon (☽) Note: I will employ this sequence often. Chaldean Order - a specific ordering of the planets derived from an earthly perspective, organizing the celestial bodies from the slowest to the fastest. It was named after its originating people from the West Asian region (commonly referred to as the Middle East) by Kuwait and South Iraq. • The Chaldeans were one of the oldest civilizations to practice Astrology. PLANETARY HIERARCHY

Within the Chaldean order, there are three groups: Superior Planets, Inferior Planets, and the Luminaries, the Sun marking the divide between Superior and Inferior Planets.

Luminaries - The two lights, the Sun and the Moon, create a basic polarity model called Sect (more on that later).

The Sun - Hot and dry due to emitting heat. It’s moderate because it’s conducive to creating life, but proximity to the sun can change this. The closer a planet is the less moderate the light’s influence. Planets can become “combust” under the rays. The Moon - Cold and wet, complimenting the Sun, but conditions can fluctuate as the reflection of light changes. Waxing phases increase warmth and waning phases decrease warmth.

Superior Planets - Planets that surpass the Sun in Chaldean Order. They move at slower speeds, thus describing longer-lasting impacts.

Saturn - The most distant visible planet. Due to its distance from the Sun, it resembles an excessively cold and dry nature. Jupiter - Separates the cold and dry extremes of Saturn and Mars, temperate and fertile, hot and wet in nature. Mars - The closest Superior planet to the Sun, resulting in an excessively hot and dry nature.

Inferior Planets - Planets under the Sun in Chaldean Order, moving faster and having less prolonged impacts.

Venus - Temperate like Jupiter; hot due to proximity to the Sun, but wet due to proximity to the Moon. Mercury - Ambiguous in nature. Dry due to never straying too far from the Sun, but also can be moist as the Moon is closest in Chaldean Order. The condition depends on its relation to other planets, usually cold and dry when alone in a chart.

FORMS OF POLARITY

The next set of qualities the planets display are two sets of polarities: Benefic and Malefic Planets, and Diurnal and Nocturnal Planets. The divide between Superior and Inferior Planets can be considered a polarity as well, but to me, it is better described as a hierarchy.

BENEFIC v MALEFIC

The labeling of Benefic and Malefic planets is an indication of a planet’s relationship to life, with Benefics being more conducive to life while Malefics work more in opposition to it. In essence, it speaks to the functionality of a planet. I notice with this language, people will usually see these sets of planets as good and bad when in reality they are really about ease and challenge. It’s always best to remember that balance and moderation are important, and Benefic and Malefic planets both have equal chances to be constructive or destructive in their own ways.

Benefics - Represent benefits and are naturally constructive in expression. They are both of hot and wet temperaments. These planets can either be very beneficial or less beneficial based on their condition in a chart.

Jupiter, the Greater Benefic - Temperate hot and wet expression, moves slowly and has longer-lasting impacts due to this speed. Venus, the Lesser Benefic - Temperate hot and wet expression, moves fast and has shorter-lasting impacts due to this speed.

Malefics - Represent deprivation, and restriction, and are naturally destructive in expression. They require effort to work with. They are both dry in nature. These planets can either be very malefic or less malefic based on their condition in a chart.

Saturn, the Greater Malefic - Excessive cold and dry expression, like frost, “cold burns”, and hypothermia. Prolonged impacts due to slow speed. Mars, the Lesser Malefic - Excessive hot and dry expression, like searing heat and feverish states. Shorter impacts due to faster speed.

Neutral - The neutral planets are the Sun, Moon, and Mercury, their benefic and malefic natures being more tied to their position and condition in any given chart.

The Sun - Generally is benefic, but planets within a close range can become overshadowed, burned, and blinded by its rays. This state is called “combust” The Moon - Usually is benefic when waxing (increasing light) and malefic when waning (losing light). Mercury - Truly ambiguous as it is benefic when in relation to benefics, and malefic when with malefics.

GENDER AND SECT

The next set of polarities are called Gender and Sect, and though they are usually addressed separately, they are always intertwined so I will be addressing them in that way. This is to create simplicity, but it’s also to address language while also getting you familiar with how I will be addressing this polarity.

When people address the “gender” of a planet, they refer to what people call “feminine” and “masculine” energy, hence calling it gender. I have noticed that it goes hand-in-hand with the concept of Sect, which is the grouping of the planets in Luminary Ruled teams. Planets in the Nocturnal Sect are feminine planets, the Diurnal Sect are masculine, and like usual, Mercury goes both ways.

Diurnal (aka Masculine) - Sun / Diurnal Sect - affinity to day, extroverted, active, and visible; hot, dry, direct.

Jupiter, Benefic - Hot, expansive, and active. Saturn, Malefic - Extreme cold and destructive expression tempered by heat; paralyzing and covert action compensated by activity and visibility of the day.

Nocturnal (aka Feminine) - Moon / Night Sect - affinity to night, introverted, and discrete; receptive, humid, reserved.

Venus, Benefic - Wet, more natural when nocturnal. Mars, Malefic - Extreme hot and dry, moderated by the cold humidity of night; abrupt sharpness compensated by reflective and introverted at night.

Mercury (neutral) - Depends on position by sign and relation to Sun.

A planet’s strength depends on Sect, always stronger when on its own. In order to tell what Sect is active in your chart, one must look at the position of the Sun. When it’s above the horizon, it is of the Diurnal Sect, a Day Chart. When it’s below, it is the Nocturnal Sect, a Night Chart.

Diurnal Sect - In a Day chart, when Jupiter and Saturn are in the same hemisphere as the Sun, they are strong and weakened when in the opposing hemisphere. • The Sun is called the Sect Light in a Day chart. Nocturnal Sect - In a Night chart, when Venus and Mars are in the hemisphere opposing the Sun, they are strong and weakened when in the same hemisphere as the Sun. • The Moon is similar, and stronger in a night chart and it is called the Sect Light.

Mercury depends on the position.

With its nonstop silliness, Philippe de Broca's That Man From Rio became a big international commercial success, but more surprising, it got an Oscar nomination for its screenplay, written by de Broca with Jean-Paul Rappeneau, Ariane Mnouchkine, and Daniel Boulanger. It's usually characterized as a spoof of James Bond films, with their glamorous locations and over-the-top action sequences, but if a spoof is intended to laugh its target out of existence, That Man only whetted audiences' appetites for more of the same. One of its stars, Adolfo Celi, who pays the unscrupulous, fabulously wealthy Mário de Castro, turned up the following year as the unscrupulous, fabulously wealthy Bond villain Emilio Largo in Thunderball (Terence Young, 1965). And it's easy to see touches of That Man From Rio in later action-adventure films, such as the Indiana Jones series, which like de Broca's film centered on archaeological treasure hunting. In That Man From Rio, the location of a priceless treasure is discovered by lining up the sun's rays through the lens in an ancient statue, just as Indiana Jones uses the sun's rays and an ancient artifact to discover the location of the Ark of the Covenant in Raiders of the Lost Ark (Steven Spielberg, 1981). Jean-Paul Belmondo's Adrien picks up the help of a Rio shoeshine boy called Sir Winston (Ubriacy De Oliviera), just as Harrison Ford's Indy picks up a kid sidekick called Short Round (Ke Huy Quan) in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (Spielberg, 1984). Still, That Man From Rio stands on its own for its goofy energy, most of which is supplied by Belmondo, who with his ex-boxer's mug and physique is entirely credible flinging himself into whatever improbable situation he is called on to fight (or swim or climb or swing from vines) his way out of. Françoise Dorleac is the giddy heroine, Agnès, who spends much of the first part of the movie drugged out of her mind and never seems to find her way fully back to sobriety. It's only in retrospect -- 59 years worth of retrospect -- that the film turns sour. Today, we can see it as part of the playing out of a post-colonial environmental nightmare. There are no slums to be seen in the film's Rio: Sir Winston lives in a neatened up favela nothing like the one you see in City of God (Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund, 2002). The city of Brasília, still under construction when the film was made, is treated as a setting for Belmondo's stunts and for elaborate parties, though perhaps some of the bleakness and sterility of its urban-planning megalomania is hinted at. And at the end our hero and heroine are "rescued" by construction crews blasting and bulldozing their way through the rain forest, constructing highways that will connect to the country's new capital. There's no apparent suggestion that this constitutes a kind of environmental rape, although the villainous archaeologist (Jean Servais) is buried along with what might have been a valuable site. De Broca does allow us a glimpse of an Indian family looking on in astonishment at the raw earth uncovered by the bulldozers pushing their way through what must have been their neighborhood. It's a fleeting moment, however, one quickly passed over as Adrien and Agnès ride a truck back to civilization.
