full image desciription: a banner with text on an image. the image is of a stream, with water rushing down over rocks in a small waterfall. the stream is broken by an outcropping of mossy rocks, and the two halves meet again at the base. around the stream, green shrubs grow, and at its base, some smooth rocks are visible, with one jagged rock rising up. the image is very blue, as if viewed through a thin sheet of blue glass.
over the image, white text reads "RiverClan Appreciation Month" in a font with decorative letters. the "A" in appreciation is a triangle. the "C" in "RiverClan" has been greyed out inside. both the "R" in "RiverClan" and "M" in "Month" have additional lines at their base.

The UW Madison Archives and Libraries are working to re-house and digitize a collection of glass plate photo negatives from the 1890s to the 1920s. There are group pictures, portraits, and other photographs of campus life, some of which you can see here. The collection has been stored improperly for decades, making it difficult to preserve and access. When the process is complete, we’ll make all the images available online and safely store the physical negatives.
To begin, the Archives staff worked to stabilize and properly store the glass plates. The negatives had to be carefully taken out of their original storage in a filing cabinet, assessed, and re-housed in archival storage boxes. We use a pen with color-changing ink to detect acid in the old envelopes (pictured below). If the envelopes are acidic, we re-sleeve them into acid-free sleeves. When processing, we also assess the physical condition of the plates, looking in particular for cracking or breakage of the glass base or the emulsion (the actual image!) flaking or peeling off the glass. If we see signs of this, we take additional measures to protect the plate, housing it between buffered boards and in a four-flap enclosure.

Student staff like Andrew, Maddy, and Alyssa have done a lot of work on this project.

After the negatives were safely packaged, they were transferred to the Libraries’ Digital Collections Center. Mackenzie Reynolds and other Digital Collections staff began the process of digitizing them for public use. Working with glass plate negatives is a new thing for their team, so they are learning as they go. Mackenzie told us,
Transmissive materials are very fragile and require careful handling. We use an overhead camera system consisting of Phase One iQ180 digital back, Digital Transitions RCam, 72mm lens, 20mm & 40mm RCam extension tubes, DT Film Scanning Kit, and Kaiser Prolite Scan Lightbox. With this set up we are able to delicately process these glass plate negatives in a way that a typical scanner can not.

Below is an overview of the steps that will likely be involved in digitizing the negatives, provided by Mackenzie.
