I made the mistake of going on Reddit and saw an awful take about my favorite anime.

So, it was about Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai. To those unfamiliar, it's a RomCom about a teenaged boy who wants to put his past as edgy weirdo LARPer dork behind him. He then meets a girl who's even more of an edgy weirdo dork than he was (and is having the time of her life by being so).

Very light spoiler summary under the cut

Over the course of the show, he and the girl form a LARP group, gain new friends, and fall in love. By the end, the boy realizes that he actually really enjoys being edgy and the only reason he decided to stop LARPing as a dark magician is because he didn't have friends. He also realizes that the girl he fell in love with is using fantasy LARP as an unhealthy coping mechanism for past trauma.

The girl's relatives hate the fact that she's weird and into edgy, occult stuff. Using the girl's trauma as an argument, they basically bully the teenaged boy into convincing the girl to stop being into fantasy LARP. They tell him "it's irresponsible to encourage this". And because he's a teenaged boy who wants to do the right thing, he conflictedly convinces the girl to give up LARP and actually deal with her trauma. Because the girl loves him, she's willing to try.

With the boy's help, the girl re-organizes her life to no longer be edgy and weird, reconnect with her estranged relatives, and actually address the core source of her trauma. They make progress with the relatives and trauma thing, but both of them end up miserable as they cowtow to the people who want them to conform.

Shenanigans ensue, and they eventually go "fuck it" and go back to being edgy, weird LARPers, while bringing forward the lessons they learned from their brief stint forcing themselves to be "normal".

Anyway, the take on reddit is that the story should have ended with the girl no longer being an edgy weird dork. They completely missed the point, it's infuriating.

if the love between us was a flavor omg i made a whole meal ahaha but it'd be japanese milk tea which is my fav out of all the milk teas! and a strawberry shortcake <3 smth just sweet enough whilst not being too sweet, a pairing that goes well together, the cake has a lot of cake and not a lot of cream, and many many strawberries <3 i would even add a plate of honeyed french toast!!! three slices maybe <3 the warmness of the honey with the subtle squishiness of the cake mmm i love it sooo much. i love japanese milk tea in both warm and cold so either is fine!! but if it is warm it can feel like a lovely night in <3 i think our love is like that… indulgent and soft and everything feels Just Enough. exactly the kind of meal you want when you're having a sweet tooth yet it's not too sweet. it's not too much of anything. goes down easy.

pardon the complaining about something that literally nobody cares about.

I've been watching Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian (which is not a very good show but I'll expand on my thoughts under a read more) and every ED theme for the show so far has been a cover of a different song performed by (I presume) the lead actress, which is neat and cute in its own way. I've enjoyed the song choices.

The newest episode (EP 9. bad episode btw) has a cover of World is Mine for the ending. It's mostly fine, but it kinda blows my mind that the midi instruments for the backing sound SO MUCH WORSE than the original song, despite there being a 15 year difference between the original World is Mine and this show's cover of it, lolllll. Supremely silly.

Alya is not a very good show. I've been watching it because it's kind of a train wreck and honestly it's just been a lil too long since a new romcom anime dropped with a classic no nuance actual tsundere as the main girl (not a bad thing, imo, but I grew up watching mid tsundere romcoms, and sometimes ya just gotta watch some trash)

(we truly are in the era of brats, gyarus, and immovable object genki girls)

The premise is kinda charming, and honestly if the series just stuck with total slice of life like how the manga and the anime BEGIN, it could honestly be an alright 5/10. But the show goes full "this is actually a political drama about the world's most overly competitive student council, and also mr protag is actually a super genius who was once destined to run this school, but he became a slacker, but now his new Russian girlfriend has motivated him to step back into the spotlight and re-begin his high school political career" AND GODDDDD does it fucking SUCKKKKKKKKKKK.

We went like 2 episodes where the Russian girl didn't even do her "tsun in Japanese, dere in Russian" schtick!!! And after like 3 episode of super mid and gay politics, they spend half an episode on "hey we found a hypnosis book, oop! people are hypnotized and stripping now!" like BROOOOOOOO shit is so LAMMEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

But like okay I have an entire rant brewing just about the concept of - found family splitting up after they are 'done' with each other??? Like how is that a happy ending??

Like going through the ending:

Jason ends up alone.

Gar ends up alone.

Rachel goes to university - and yes, it looks like she has a lot of friends, but she's an orphan and she just lost the one chance she had at having a biological brother and there is no explicit depiction of her living with Dick and Kory - so her 'independence' is code for her being 'alone'.

Conner does get to meet up with Superman, but there is nothing to say that he is living with the guy or that there's any true parental aspect to the mentor relationship like Conner always wanted. (Because Conner wanted a father, he didn't just want a mentor. And the closest thing he ever had to that was Dick.) So we don't know what his emotional state is actually like.

And the only people who aren't totally alone are the ones who are in traditional romantic couples - which puts a weird emphasis on romantic connections instead of the family or friendship dynamic?

Tbh, I think it would have even been nice if there was a clip of Tim bringing Bernard back to visit his very much alive and well blood related family in Gotham, showing that they are still important to him.

It's so funny, because Dick and Kory got such a romcom ending, and it seems like DickKory fans are convinced that the entire show was written around that ending - no it wasn't. It's just very easy to put a het couple together in the end and hint at them having a baby and call it a happy ending. Like if you think that Dick and Kory would just buy a house off in the burbs somewhere and be peaceful and Dick wouldn't be breathing down Rachel's neck checking on her and Kory wouldn't have to move every few weeks because she'd blow up the neighbours if they put their trashcans in the wrong place - they would not have a cute and peaceful life. Nah.

But like - I am just annoyed that they have to part ways because there is no longer danger to defeat. Why can't they stick together and continue being a family even when the world is safe?

It feels like such a boring and like way too typical idea of a 'happy ending' where each character has to get their own individual happy ending rather than all of them being happy together.

So, here's my ending (like a 'money is no object, all the actors are no busy that day' fantasy ending);

They move back to San Francisco and re-open the Tower and it actually goes well this time. They use it as a place to take in misfit kids who need their help (just like Dick did for Rachel) and they all act as mentors for those kids.

Conner has an active mentor relationship with Superman, but he still has the ongoing support of the family he has always known. Rachel can balance a life of 'being normal' and going to a 'normal' university, but she can still use her newfound powers to help people (if she wants).

Gar spends regular periods of time meditating in the Red to help the welfare of animal kind, but he is always there at family dinners, and when there is animals in danger, he has the team as back-up to help rescue them. He doesn't do it alone. Tim and Bernard have an ongoing relationship; Bernard is outfitting the entire Tower with STAR Labs technology (as an excuse to work with the team) and Tim is continuing his training under Dick's supervision.

The last scenes of the episode would be:

They turn on the news and see that Dove and Wonder Girl have formed a new team, and they have just taken down an international crime ring operating out of Paris (because Dawn can't resist sticking her nose in fishy business and she called Donna when she needed help). Ultimate girl duo.

And one of the last scenes would be - Jason knocking on their door, apologizing, and asking if he can be welcomed back to the team - because he stumbled on a case that's too big for him to handle on his own, and he needs help. Him coming full circle from the Doctor Light storyline, fully maturing, acknowledging that he truly needs the Titans to back him up and he can't always do it on his own.

They accept him back with open arms, they all give him hugs (my personal self indulgence) and the last shot of the show is zooming out as they all lean in to look over the information Jason has brought them.

Also I said in a different post on my old blog that if I didn't get a Gar/Jason reunion hug in S4 I would sue and I still feel like suing because they didn't have any contact in S4 at all. I feel fucking robbed.

But yeah the ending sucked - like you don't have to split them up. Keep them stuck together. Keep them bonded. Booo

What I'm Watching, Fall 2023 Anime Season

New Stuff:

16bit Sensation: Another Layer - I hate making galge in the current industry, so I got sent back in time to the 90s to make galge then. Wacky concept, let's see where they go with this.

Boukensha ni Naritai to Miyako ni Deteitta Musume ga S-Rank ni Natteta (My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer) - An overpowered fantasy character series, but this time it's heartwarming fun.

Boushoku no Berserk (Berserk of Gluttony) - If Eminence wasn't getting its second season right now, this would be my pick for edgy trash of the season. As it is, I'll enjoy some bottom of the barrel sludge with an overpowered edgy MC and no subtlety.

Bullbuster - Provisionally watchable. You take what you can get with mecha sometimes. This one is about fighting ugly cg giant beasts but also deployment was delayed until liability coverage was confirmed, and further by the broken printer.

Hametsu no Oukoku (The Kingdoms of Ruin) - I'm concerned this will turn into a lot of indulging in violence against women as shock material, but continuing with it for now since the setting raises some potentially interesting questions.

Hoshikuzu Telepath (Stardust Telepath) - Cute girls doing (psychic) friendship things? It's probably nothing, but I'll give it a try.

Kimi no Koto ga Daidaidaidaidaisuki na 100-nin no Kanojo (The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You) - Now this is garbage! After a double meet cute comes a double confession and double acceptance of same. A shenanigans-type romcom where a poly harem end is supernaturally enforced, and I am here for it.

Konyaku Haki sareta Reijou wo Hirotta Ore ga, Ikenai Koto wo Oshiekomu (I'm Giving the Disgraced Noble Lady I Rescued a Crash Course in Naughtiness) - Not that kind of naughtiness! No ecchi tag! Kinda looking like a nothing show, but I'll give it some more time.

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries) - This one is starting late, so actually a placeholder for if I get to it later.

Shangri-La Frontier: Kusoge Hunter, Kamige ni Idoman to su (Shangri-La Frontier: Crappy Game Hunter Challenges God-Tier Game) - Another full-dive MMO game, but this time it's about a dude who is just having fun being a minmaxer and speedrunner. No angst, just a side of very light romance. Imagine a show about games also being about having fun!

Sousou no Frieren (Frieren: Beyond Journey's End) - This one got started fast, so I'm already several episodes deep. Tagged in advance as the likely show of the season, it's a slow and thoughtful show about a near-eternal elf mage learning to understand the fleeting humans in her life. Very much a "vibes" show.

Tearmoon Teikoku Monogatari: Dantoudai kara Hajimaru, Hime no Tensei Gyakuten Story (Tearmoon Empire) - We Have Marie Antoinette At Home gets to re-do her life after getting the guillotine. I'll go with it for now, why not.

Toaru Ossan no VRMMO Katsudouki (A Playthrough of a Certain Dude's VRMMO Life) - Did this trick me into watching a cooking show? Maybe. It's fine I guess.

Undead Unluck - This is excellent. So much fun. David Production was the right studio for an anime where a character climbs buildings by severing his own limbs and use the force of them growing back for propulsion.

Watashi no Oshi wa Akuyaku Reijou. (I'm in Love with the Villainess) - Yuri Villainess? Sure I'll take it. Looks fun.

Dekoboko Majo no Oyako Jijou (The Family Circumstances of the Irregular Witch) - Meme about weird that it happened twice for adopting a daughter you found in the woods. This one is about a 200 year old loli and her 16 year old daughter with giant anime tiddy. Pass.

Hikikomari Kyuuketsuki no Monmon (The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess) - Dog Days meets Liar Liar? I liked those things, but together, nah.

Bokura no Ameiro Protocol (Protocol: Rain) - Didn't even get through the first episode of this one. Painfully ugly and awkward. If you're going to make a show about a fake esport, make the fake game look good and make the players not play it like shit.

Keikenzumi na Kimi to, Keiken Zero na Ore ga, Otsukiai suru Hanashi. (Our Dating Story: The Experienced You and The Inexperienced Me) - Again dropped halfway through the first episode. Just such a drag. Not worth it for the trash.

1/ Portal Revolution (2024) i went in expecting a very polished set of portal 2 styled test chambers. i was NOT expecting a story that captured my imagination very good experience

2/ The Ancient Magus' Bride (2017) every review i saw for this said it's bad. huh??. sure it's not perfect but i quite enjoyed it. a bit soft, a bit atmospheric, a bit girly. amazing job actually drawing me into a british fantasy setting.

3/ Violet Evergarden (2018) at worst, it feels a bit like its on rails, maybe eager to lose focus. but overall i rather enjoyed the story of the most traumatized girl in the world slowly learn to be human. idk if its "65th best anime ever" good, but… a lovely ride!

4/ Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010) i heard this was somewhere between nfsmw 2005 (which i love) and burnout paradise (which i just Couldn't get into). i heard correctly. i fell in love with this. with the semi-open world. the daynight cycle and weather. and with drifting somehow! (but mostly weaving through traffic.) captivated. also worth mentioning: the cop mode was an interesting variation in gameplay. not my fav, but good.

5/ Titanfall 2 (2016) finally playing this and.. yeah I see why ppl were comparing it to HL2. I'm more "nodding along with this assessment" than feeling it, tho… idk. it's good but it doesn't resonate with me. the movement, though! that slaps! is this… schmoovement?

6/ Need for Speed: Heat (2019)

this was hard to get into, specifically because the pacing was just kinda... wack(?) for me anyway. plus a lot of other small little spots of friction. but it was never enough to turn me away (mw2012, burnout paradise)

by the end of the "storyline" races, i found myself having a good time. maybe a mixed bag, but well worth the 3 dollars or w/e it was.

7/ Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai (2018)

a damn good bait and switch. i feel the focus got a bit wobbly in the middle, but i found myself enjoying the overarching exploration of Puberty Syndrome nonetheless. i do not like tsundere but this was played honestly enough that i evaded cringing. the show is an interesting web of relationships centered around a bit of a straight shooter. i think it worked nicely, though i fear it wasn't focused enough to truly stick with me. i cant help but imagine a heavily trimmed version with just the first and final arc. that would've blown some socks.

8/ Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl (2019)

yeah the show was good enough that i watched the movie immediately after. (im not as interested in the 2nd movie tho.) i feel like i chugged a pint of stupid juice before watching this but i still followed the key plot points i think. is madoka genre? there's something satisfying about this explanation of the loose anime thread, though i think this might've worked better as The Anime (RE: trimming etc). a bit of kudos for giving some weight to "it was all just a dream"

9/ Kaguya-sama: Love is War (2019) this show is at its best when it's needlessly dramatic and convoluted. sometimes, it's brilliant. but, sadly, it also wants to stay in the episodic high school romcom genre, complete with serious pining. maybe that part's ok but it's surely not for me. i do not trust this to stay fresh for 3(?????) seasons.

10/ Dungeon Meshi (2024) i have the opposite of a soft spot for high fantasy stuff. hate it. this reeks of it. and yet, whenever im watching it, i am FULLY drawn into the world with a sense of wonder and anticipation. there were so many characters and all of them were delightful. my only real complaints were that, especially towards the end, the pacing was wack. feels like they chopped it to bits for the anime... and for what? a つづく? man... ill probably actually grab the manga.

11/ Hitoribocchi no OO Seikatsu (2019) it's cute before it's anything else. i was drawn in by a very relatable protagonist that literally has a panic attack first episode, but… that didn't last. I got 3 episodes in before deciding that the show isn't for me. the person that this show is for, though, i think is in for a treat. nako is alright.

12/ Ride Your Wave (2019)

very…. summer. maybe a little too bright for me (not literally but. vibe. ily.) i somehow missed the "supernatural" tag and wasn't sure how grounded to be, which was fun lol everything is connected in a satisfying way, but something didn't quite click for me. not sure what it was. or wasn't. i'd still call it a good watch

13/ Weathering with You (2019)

I saw a review of this that went as follows: "discout kimi no na wa". that's… almost right, but really reductive. it didn't hit as hard for me, but carried an atmosphere all of its own. i think its biggest weakness was deploying the damsel in distress trope for the climax. absolutely throwing away a lot of character development... second weakness was not leaning into the supernatural angle, but I also think that's 100% a matter of taste. I think the two could have been solved in one stone, but meh... aside from that: vibes were off the charts, and the art direction wall to wall great. every frame a painting etc

14/ Mother 3 (2006)

for the first time since November 2008 (apparently), I decided to revisit Mother 3.... via Lauren the Flute's Let's Play. I remember way back then that I thought M3 was a little weaker than EB for me. Revisiting it has solidified that opinion for me: It's super strong at some parts and really weak at others, to my taste at least. For the most part, everything I remembered as "my fav bits" from 16 years ago are my favorite bits today. To comment on Lauren's playthrough specifically: at glance, she seemed to be the most emotionally invested. and. yeah! It wasn't the best stream setup, but it was the most resonant. another LP of hers may appear here lol

15/ Beastars (2019)

Furry anime? "Yes", but the nontherian kind. Zootopia ass. This immediately had me suspicious from episode 1. But then, I kept trying to see if I was wrong. and the show kept delivering some fascinating symbols! the hype was back! and then it threw all of that away. "you were reading it backwards the whole time dumbass". augh. if I hadn't done that, I think it'd be an ok watch. what kills me is that some of the plot threads here would make an INCREDIBLE anime. but they withered away from a lack of focus as some really annoying threads were added instead. also the icky biological essentialism. what a terrible aftertaste. :(

props for having (half of) a really good sex scene though i guess? I was kinda impressed.

16/ Keep Your Hands off Eizouken! (2020)

what a delightful nod to not just the art of animation, but the practice of it. the shitty parts. the deadlines. the overworking. said with reverance!

each of the characters were interesting foils for each other, though to varying degrees. Kanamori became my favorite. she took the role of manager, a role thats somewhat antagonistic usually. yet in here she looked like a badass mob boss, fighting for the creatives, brandishing huge clever strength.

17/ BNA (2020)

it is ASTOUNDING how much more I enjoyed this than Beastars. I can't help but make the comparison since they're kind of companion shows: 2020 furry anime. but. god damn.

treating beastmen (furries) as a separate class, like humans with "superpowers", did wonders for the plot.

I think both BNA and Beastars tried to show a rigid system of thinking and say "it doesn't have to be this way. tear down the barriers.", but BNA actually pulled it off. the bad guy became a Big Bad obsessed with racial (species-ial?) purity, whos downfall was literally in mixing blood.

what im saying is BNA is the pro-choice + antifa version of Beastars.

watching this was fun because it was well structured. i picked up plot elements from their foreshadowing. fun! animation great. idk. all around good time, even if i dont think itll stick with me. fun watch!

18/ Haibane Renmei (2002)

I had an itch to revisit this again. it's a flawed masterpiece. and the flaws are all petty things. budgetary stuff. i wish the soundtrack were longer and the shots larger and the folly higher quality. as-is it feels like peering through a foggy window into a beautiful garden.

but MAN it's a good damn garden.

the finale is a bit too "hardcore action" than it needs to be but every other aspect is just. a delight.

i realized this time that my initial reaction to the show was probably heavily influenced by these surface level complaints. "i wish the soundtrack were less orchestral" i probably said at the time. but now i think it should've been more. i can't imagine it veering too far away from what it has. mushishi has its sound and haibane has this sound. iykyk

19/ Charge!! Cromartie High School (The Movie) (2005)

the live action adaptation of the manga, on kenny lauderdale's rec. it's very...... low budget and 2005-core. but despite that, it does a great job at being CLEAR with its delivery of jokes and information. clear hilights for me: the hijacker scene (until the ***ism) and the "getting the team back together by walking towards the camera" scene. also the drugs scene lmao.

there were quite a few jokes and gags that misfired or just didnt work at all, but that might be to-be-expected for a film like this. a fun watch as a fan of the source material, but only just.

20/ Arcane S2 (2024)

holy shit this is drop dead gorgeous 110% of the time. every frame a god damn painting.

the plot felt like A LOT of threads that weave in and out of each other. just when everything feels like it's starting to resolve nicely, a thread you forgot about barges in and undoes everything. rinse and repeat. it's fun actually.

very underwhelmed with the ending but w/e. a nice watch

"A ride home? From the Steve Harrington?" She seriously considered the offer though she knew that her house would be out of the way. Living on the edge of town had its downsides, especially when it came to transport. The nearest bus stop from her place was a fifteen minute walk and it was a 50/50 chance on a bus even showing up. Sure, she had her driver's license but there was only one car. Meg always left the car at home in case her mother needed to get somewhere. The idea of Janice waiting at the bus stop or, even worse, trying to walk into town was enough to stress her out.

She re-adjusted the straps of her backpack and gave a shrug though she there was a hint of a mischievous smile on her face. "Sure, it might be funny. Let's hope the yelling doesn't give both of us a headache." With that said, she headed for the door and wondered just how this ride would play out.

Okay, so she hadn't planned for the kids to get that crazy. How could she have known how wild they all were? The only one she actually knew was Dustin and that was since she used to babysit him before she got busy with track meets. Besides, she hadn't thought that her jokingly saying 'guess how I know Steve' would end up with one of those ideas being some idea that sounded like it'd come straight out of a romcom. Even she'd shot that idea down. What happened to normal guesses like being partners in a school project? Not a single guess those kids had made was even remotely in the realm of possibility.

She actually felt a little guilty when she exited the car and watched it drive off. Steve would probably be stuck denying everything those kids guessed for the rest of the week. The least she could do was let him copy her homework if he didn't finish in time. It would be her fault this time if those kids ate up all his time.

Once home, she worked on her homework before cooking dinner for her and her mom. Meg ended up putting some pieces of shredded chicken into a bowl before leaving it out back for the dog. She hadn't seen it in a few days but she'd already gotten used to putting food out there in case it came back. If the dog didn't show up, there were always other animals that would eat whatever she left out.

ㅤSomehow, nothing about her mom fighting with Hop about moving into the safety of town surprised him, but the fact that she was close enough to Chief Hopper to call him 'Hop' did surprise him a little. He knew the Byers were pretty close to the Chief, but his own experiences weren't quite as good. His parents weren't friendly with the police and he knew damn well that his dad had gotten off on drinking and driving (his mom swore that his dad wasn't that bad, just buzzed) just because they were loaded and friends with the mayor. He was pretty sure he'd gotten away with shit himself for the same reasons, just because of who his parents were.

ㅤThat wasn't how it worked now, not when Hopper had seen him fight and bleed against monsters to keep the kids safe and knew he was dependable, but it lingered in the back of his mind. The cops weren't the only people who saw him and his parents that way, and the dumb social politics at school only stressed that, like Meg Thomas here and the way she'd come at him at that last party. He'd lost his grip on the façade because of the kids here and he wondered if that made her think better of him for seeing him without it, or worse for how obviously he was faking most of the time. He wouldn't ask.

ㅤInstead, Steve eyed her as she said she'd be careful, well aware that meant very little when it came down to it because he spent so much time with the kids - they might 'be careful', but it only meant that they'd think a little harder about how they did dangerous things, not that they wouldn't do them at all. Nothing he could really do to stop her, however, so he had to just let it go. He'd just avoid her house that night, and that would solve that. He managed a smile at her suggesting he go deal with the kids as the volume rose a bit, but he pulled his keys out of his pocket and jingled them in front of her.

ㅤ"Max has driven a car before, I take no chances," he informed Meg, not really smug about it but putting on a little bit of satisfaction, at least. The memory of Max driving was more traumatic than he'd like to admit, given the condition he'd been in and the rough wake up. "I'd offer you a ride home, but I've got Max today so we'd have to squash four of them in the back and that'll be some yelling. I'm down to do it just to watch them freak out, if you want."

He’s concerned when he first finds you crying, eyes widening as he lets out a choked gasp at how hard you’re sobbing. He scoffs when you tell him why you’re actually crying, though. It’s a fictional character, why would you cry over them? Despite his sighs, he does get you a box of tissues and sit beside you. He awkwardly pats you on the back in hopes of comforting you, and when you turn to cling to him he stiffly wraps his arms around you.

Hifumi Yamada

He absolutely can empathize. He can empathize better than anyone. He’s probably right by your side sobbing the same as you, honestly. He’s definitely gonna hold you close to him as you both sob over the character, and he has the tissues ready and everything. Afterwards you both watch older content of the character to lift your spirits and pretend it’s not canon. Hifumi also considers writing a fanfic where the character lives. 

Kiyotaka Ishimaru

He’s ultra concerned when he finds you crying, rushing towards you to kneel by your side immediately. Once he finds out why you’re crying, he may be a little skeptical and confused at first. I mean, the character isn’t real, right? So why would you cry? But then he remembers the time he cried during Les Mis, so now he both completely understands and also is crying with you. You’re both crying in each other’s arms as you mourn over completely different characters, but Taka still tries his best to comfort you by hugging you tight.

Leon Kuwata

He’s a little lost on how to comfort you at first, but after you pull him down he gets the gist. He won’t judge you on it, God knows how many romcoms’ he’s cried over in his spare time. He’ll pull you into his arms and wipe your tears with his jacket sleeve, reassuring you that, hey, maybe they didn’t actually die! Maybe they’ll come back at the end! It’s a possibility, right? 

Makoto Naegi

He can totally empathize! He’s cried over character deaths so many times before, he’s already got the tissues ready. He’ll wrap an arm around your shoulders and reassure you that there could still be a way the character will be alive! Maybe it’s a trick death! And if they turn out to be really gone, well... who needs canon anyway?

Mondo Oowada

He doesn’t really understand, but he knows what it’s like to cry over a movie, so he does get it to some level. He readily sits beside you (after a loud exclamation about beating up whoever made you cry) and opens his arms for you to fall into if you want. If you accept, he’ll definitely wrap you up in his arms and hold you tightly. He brings you into a tight hug immediately as he mourns with you. He convinces you to put on some previous content of the character while he grabs snacks and appreciates them with you. A very tearful night, but he won’t leave your side. 

Chihiro Fujisaki

He’ll definitely start crying with you. Whether that be because you’re crying or because he also felt attached the the character, it’s hard to tell. But he’ll sit beside you as you both sob and watch old media of the character, and he even has water bottles beside you two to make sure you stay hydrated through the sorrowful night.

3: How easy to annoy is your oc? Do they have common pet-peeves or are they stoic in response to everything? What is their reaction if the source doesn’t stop?

Nita - She's patient to a fault -- to her own detriment. Really really. She'll let you annoy her long after it's pushed her to her breaking point. You'll see some of this at play in Dethkomic very soon. Nita's got a problem with boundaries, but slowly and surely, she works it out. Unfortunately until she does... she's likely to just let it keep going even after other people are beginning to find it obnoxious.

Caj - Also has a lot of patience, but she'll let you know when you're getting on her nerves. The only thing that really truly bothers her (except Skwisgaar) is inaction when action is clearly warranted. Caj is the wind element of the bunch. If she's not moving, she dies. Or, moreover, she takes matters into her own hands.

16 (Caj): If your oc could only eat one thing for the rest of their life (while miraculously not suffering from malnutrition), what would it be? Does this match their favourite food?

Caj is on record as saying chocolate is the only addiction she hasn't been to rehab for. On tour, she is well-known for hitting up restaurants and asking for the dessert list up front -- proceeding to order the most decandent chocolate *whatever* on the menu. There are some exceptions (she doesn't consider American chocolate to be real food) but her sweet tooth is as legendary as her music.

20: Does your oc have any pleasure that embarrasses them so they keep it secret? Or are they open about all the things they enjoy?

Caj - Probably knows more about the characters and worlds that inhabit her kids' favorite shows and books than they do. Following the timeline of when my stories *actually* happened, Caj would probably be a brony. If they'd happened today, she'd unironically enjoy Bluey and Blippi. I'm not sure how out she'd be about these things, but I'm sure she'd correct other parents when they confused Pinkie Pie for Rainbow Dash.

Cherry - She's pretty hedonistic and sees no shame in enjoying all that life has to offer and doing it out loud. Her "guilty pleasures" are many for this reason. Cherry's got a not-so-secret love for sappy romcoms, loves to overdo it on makeup snd wildly out-of-vogue hairstyles any chance she gets, and has a thing for pink flamingo lawn ornaments and similarly themed items.

34 (Nita): What would someone blackmail your oc with? Would they be successful in getting what they wanted?

That's a tough one. What they'd blackmail her with isn't as hard a question -- probably a loved one. But God help those bad guys if the one they took hostage was her dad. They'd give him back.

How successful they'd be is what has me stuck. Nita's quick to please, and if it was someone she loved dearly, there's no question she'd do anything in order to save them. However, one of Nita's innate abilities is this persuasive nature she seems to have over others that come in contact with her. She's a spirit of harmony and getting along (and yeah, here again, I'm kinda hinting at superpowers). Maybe all it'd take for the antagonist to drop the ball is hanging around her for a few minutes? I mean... can you blame them? Who'd want to hurt this chick? LOL

29 (Cherry): If your oc was in a video game, what would their idle animation be? (When the player stays still for too long, the animation that plays.)

I actually almost did this when I found a plugin that would allow me to put idle animations on characters in Harmonic Odyssey (but, feature creep, yanno...) -- would absolutely have her roll a joint and smoke it until the player picked their controller back up again.

23 (Cherry): What is the most annoying sound to your oc? What’s the most pleasant? Is there any reason?

I LOVE it when I have to re-read my own character sheets to figure stuff like this out. Annoying is a very good question because she "analyzes" sound in a way that would confuse and confound most people who don't specifically have her sort of sensitivities. She is always looking for patterns and notes in things, even when there aren't any to be found. If none exist, she will likely shrug it off until there's too much of nothing to be found. I imagine she's cool with a consistent white noise, but only to a point. Having an alarm or something that should have a regular "beat" go off without keeping a consistent time pattern might be her kryptonite.

Pleasant sounds? Let's talk about the sound of water pipes... for several reasons that should be obvious by now. :)

BNHA Valentine’s Day Headcanons!

Happy first day of February! Some of my Discord friends and I were brainstorming how different My Hero characters would celebrate Valentine’s Day. So let’s give ‘em a whirl! All characters are adults or aged up to be 18+ in these scenarios.

Gotta start with my blonde bby. And the best way I can describe his ideal Valentine’s is BIG and LOUD!

He’s never been one shy away from telling you how he feels, but he’s especially talkative on V-Day. Going on and on about how lucky he is, how much he loves you, etc.

It’s love songs all day, baby! From blasting modern pop songs while he makes breakfast to sweet, old-fashioned tunes that he makes you slow dance with him to in the living room. He’s a true romantic (and a surprisingly good dancer to boot).

And he might even (re: definitely will) serenade you. The man is a musician after all! In fact, don’t be surprised if Hizashi wrote a song just for you.

As far as gifts go, Hizashi goes all out. He’s a hero and a celebrity, with the salaries to match. So you can expect a few big ticket items. Plus, he’s a good listener. If you ever mentioned something you needed/wanted/expressed interest in, chances are it will arrive wrapped up in red and pink paper on the day.

“Hey little listener! Remember how ya said you might wanna try painting? No? Well I turned the spare room into a studio for ya anyways! Maybe you can make me something to hang up at the station, yeah?”

But just because his gifts are expensive and flashy, that doesn’t mean he devalues your own. Hizashi will blubber and gush over anything you give him, from lavish luxuries to a something as simple as a homemade card. Loudly I might add. Make sure to have earplugs handy.

Unfortunately, one of the drawbacks of having a radio star as your partner is that he’ll most likely have to work on Valentine’s Day. It’s even worse if he had teach that day as well. So don’t count on any fancy dinners until after the 14th.

But if you tune into his station on the day (and you will), there will be at least three or four songs dedicated to “his favorite little listener.”

Even if he can’t be with you on the actual night, he’s definitely going to make up for lost time. Mood music, candlelight, the whole nine yards. He wants to romance you. To make you feel as good as you make him feel everyday.

Kirishima doesn’t just shower you with crimson trinkets; he buys treats for everyone! Especially his closest friends. To him, Valentine’s is all about showing the people he loves most just how much he cares. And it’s honestly adorable to see him practically bouncing off the walls in excitement when he finds a little red treasure for this year’s celebration.

“Babe! Look at that red shark plushie. It looks just like me! So manly!”

*proceeds to buy seven of them: one for him, one for you, and one for everyone in the Bakusquad + Tetsutetsu*

But at the end of the day, once all the chocolates and stuffed animals have been given away, he’ll make sure you know there’s no one he loves more than you. He spends the final hours alone with you, eating a home cooked meal and cuddling on the couch. Times like these are his favorite, just being to hold you close and appreciate your presence in his life.

Fair warning though. You’ll probably end up watching some some cheesy romcom, cuz he loves those too.

And yes, he definitely spends too much money trying to win you one of those giant stuffed animals.

By the end of the day, you’re thoroughly spent and just want to snuggle up next to him. And maybe have a late night snack of chocolate. Mirio is more than happy to indulge you, even offering to carry you home. Anything to be close to his precious sunshine.

AOT Horror

Hello All! This is the first time I’ve written in a very long time and its all thanks to @onyxoverride All of these are headcannons about Attack on Titan characters and how they feel about horror movies! 

Eren - Eren likes to pretend that he's into horror movies, ghost/paranormal movies don’t freak him out badly but any creature feature where someone gets eaten upsets him. It reminds him too much of what happened to his mother. 

Movies I think Eren would watch : any Paranormal Activity movie, The Conjuring, Veronica, 

Mikasa - Mikasa isn’t bothered at all by horror movies but she's also not a huge fan of them. She prefers foreign horror movies when she does watch horror, specifically any Asian horror movie. She also feels a bit of pride being able to watch them without subtitles. 

Movies I think Mikasa would watch : Train to Busan, The Host, Onibara, 

Armin - Armin loves horror, he’ll watch any movie once but he's especially fond of ocean and space based horror movies. Anything that involves what we as humans don’t know yet. Though anytime he watches a shark movie he's always quick to clear up that sharks aren't actually that aggressive, it's just because of Jaws that people think they are. 

Movies I think Armin would watch : Underwater, Aliens, The Meg

Sasha - Sasha doesn’t mind horror as long as it does not involve any animals, when it does she gets kind of freaked out. She worries about one day being out hunting and the animals will turn on her. 

Movies I think Sasha would like : Thankskilling, Boar, Zoombies, Frogs

Connie - Connie loves an old school horror movie, he really enjoys the classic slasher films. He's got a plethora of knowledge about the films too, ask him any kind of fact and he’ll know it. He's the one who likes to show Sasha animal based horror to freak her out. 

Movies I think Connie would like : Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Jean - Jean is terrified of horror movies but the only one who knows it is Marco. Mikasa invited Jean over to watch a horror movie with her once and he nearly pissed himself while watching it. Horror really just freaks him out too much, but he's okay with some of the cheesier horror movies. 

Movies I think Jean would like : The Blob, Gremlins, The Gate

Marco - Marco fucking loves horror movies. He's a huge fan of psychological thrillers. Marco loves to analyze horror movie characters, especially the killers. Jeans always freaked out by him because he's always accurate in what he says. 

Movies I think Marco would like : Ma, Mother, Unsane

Reiner - Reiner hates horror movies, they typically trigger his PTSD and DID. They just really bother him. Older movies don’t bother him too much but new movies that are flashy and use heavy lighting in the way they tell stories. He also prefers movies that don’t have too much blood.  

Movies I think Reiner would like : Blair Witch Project, Trolls (1986), IT 

Annie - Annie’s not afraid of horror movies but she just doesn’t like them. She prefers romantic comedies, maybe some action films. The only person that knows she likes romcoms is Hitch, who usually watches them with her. 

Movies I think Annie would like: Palm Springs, Crazy Rich Asain, Legally Blonde

Bertolt - Bertolt’s also not super into horror movies, while he doesn’t mind a psychological thriller he's just not a big fan or gory horror movies at all. Bertolt prefers comedies and animated movies.

Movies I think Bertolt would like : Knives Out, Zootopia, Spider-Man Homecoming

Historia - Historia is super misunderstood, she seems super girlie and soft but she's actually the biggest fan of horror out of everyone. She's a big troma and grindhouse fan, anything gory and gross she loves. 

Movies I think Historia would like : BrainDead /Dead Alive, Basketcase, Terror Firmer

Ymir - Ymir’s not a fan of horror movies, she's just not super interested in them but she does love to watch them with Historia. The first time she agreed to watch one with Historia she thought she could be comforting Historia but Historia was so into horror that it freaked her out a little. Ymir prefers slasher movies when she does watch horror. 

Movies I think Ymir would like: Hatchet, Terrifier, Child's Play, Wrong Turn

Erwin - Erwin’s a big historical horror movie fan, he loves to see the way that others portray different time periods. He's not so much a fan of horror as he is a fan of history and learning about other time periods. 

Movies I think Erwin would like: Tremors, Dracula, Overlord

Zeke - Zeke is very specific about the horror movies he likes. He's only interested in horror movies that involve monkeys or hot chicks, preferably both. 

Movies I think Zeke would like: Flying Monkeys, Blood Monkeys, White Pongo

Levi - Levi is not a fan of horror, it squicks him out and he doesn’t like jumpscares, they always get him and he doesn't like anyone to know that he's freaked out. Levi prefers British shows, especially the drama shows and any kind of cooking or baking show.

Movies/Shows I think Levi would like: The Great British Bake Off, Kitchen Nightmares, Skins

Hange - Hange is a HUGE fan of horror, any kind of zombie movie or movie involving mad scientists. They’ve always loved horror of any kind, horror books and games are also things they are a big fan of. 

Movies I think Hanji would like: Splice, Return of the Living Dead, Re-Animator
