The delegation presented to the President a gold medallion commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Society. According to the society’s website, it was the first Danish-American friendship organization. Each year, it hosts the largest 4th of July celebration outside of the United States. Trolle in Dänemark

Ähnlich wie in Schweden und Norwegen gehören Trolle in Dänemark auch zu den beliebten Figuren im Kinderbuch, Vorgarten und in den Souvenirladen. In Dänemark sind Trolle zwar nicht so stark in die alte Mythologie eingebunden wie in Norwegen oder Island, aber auch hier gibt es Landschaften, die an Trolle und andere Naturgeister erinnern.

Trolle in Dänemark Bei unseren Wanderungen in Dänemark sind wir an so manchen magischen und geheimnisvollen Ort gelangt. Nicht nur der Name des Ortes verwies darauf, daß an dieser Stelle Trolle oder andere Naturgeister leben. In der Vester Thorup Klitplantage besichtigten wir den Troldsting. Der Sage nach sollen sich zwei hier lebende grosse Trolle (Riesen) mit den Steinen beworfen haben. Auf der Insel Fur kamen wir während unserer Wanderung am Hwistelstow vorbei, einer kleinen ringförmigen Wallanlage. Ich bin mir sicher, dass wir hier an einem Ort waren, an dem auch Trolle wohnen. Dieser Ort hat seine eigenen Magie!

Im Gebiet von Rebild Bakker gibt es mit dem Troldeskoven sogar einen ganzen Trollwald. Wenn man sich die hier wachsenden, über 100 Jahre alten verschlungenen und krummgewachsenen Buchen ansieht, versteht man, wie dieser Wald zu seinem Namen kam. Und es gibt sicher noch viele weiterer solcher magischen Orte in Dänemark.

Vom Wesen der Trolle Im Gegensatz zu den heute sattsam bekannten Internet-Trollen sind die echten Trolle nicht unbedingt schadensbringend. Vielmehr haftet ihnen ein etwas geheimnisvolles und auch unzuverlässiges Wesen an. Ähnlich wie Feen oder Hexen gelten sie als Erklärung für sonst unerklärbare Phänomene. Das Wort Troll geht laut Sprachwissenschaftlern übrigens auf das altgermanische Wort troll (trollen, to troll, trylle) zurück. Seine Bedeutung meint so etwas wie: hexen, zaubern, tricksen oder beschwören. Trolle entspringen alten Sagen und Geschichten. In Deutschland sind Trolle am ehesten mit unseren Zwergen in Verbindung zu bringen. Trolle werden auf verschiedene Arten dargestellt. Mal sind es sehr große, oftmals aber auch sehr kleine, menschenähnliche Wesen. Meist besitzen sie eine auffallend große Nase und eine dichte Körperbehaarung. In Schweden und Dänemark ist "Troll" eine allgemeine Bezeichnung für jegliche menschenähnlichen Fabelwesen, die sich überwiegend im Wald aufhalten. Meist vermeiden Trolle das Sonnenlicht. Denn dieses soll dazu führen, daß sie zu Stein erstarren. Auch sollen die Trolle durch das Sonnenlicht ihre Zauberkräfte verlieren. Darum lieben die Trolle auch eher die Nachtstunden oder wahlweise dunkle Wälder oder Stuben. Das Bild der Trolle hat sich gewandelt. Früher waren es böse, grobschlächtige Wesen. Durch die Tourismusindustrie wurden die großen furchteinflößenden Wesen klein und niedlich. Wenn man sie nicht verärgert, dann  bleiben sie das auch.

Das Trollmuseum in Gjøl Es gibt sie aber wirklich die Trolle in Dänemark. In der alten Trollfabrik in Gjøl finden wir endlich Trolle. Dort leben sie in einem hübschen kleinen Museum. Hier erfahren wir auch von Thomas Dam. Er lebte von 1915 bis 1989. Schon in der Schule mochte er lieber Zeichnen als Mathematik. Die Familie Dam war sehr arm. Thomas Dam begann ca. 1930 mit dem Schnitzen von Holzfiguren. Diese wurden schnell sehr beliebt und ließen sich gut verkaufen. Das Schnitzen war auch das einzige Einkommen der Familie zu dieser Zeit. Die Lieblingsmotive von Dam waren die Menschen aus Gjøl, die alten Fischer und deren Ehefrauen. Die Figuren waren wir Karikaturen geschnitzt und hatten allesamt ein warmes freundliches Gesicht. So entwickelten sich mit viel Fantasie und Kreativität die lustig-frechen Trolle mit den wuscheligen Haaren. Die Puppen wurden auch Gjøll-Trolle oder Dam-Trolle genannt. In den 1960er Jahren produzierte man tausende der Trolle aus Gummi. Mit Kleidung aus Filz und farbigem Strähnenhaar reisten sie fortan um die Welt. Im Laufe der Zeit wurden die Dam-Trolle zu einem Symbol für das Glück. Die Lucky-Trolle waren geboren. ich bin der Meinung, in den 70er und 80er Jahren gab es diese liebenswürdigen Puppen auch in der DDR als Spielzeug. Natürlich kann ich mich auch irren. Eventuell weiß ja der ein oder andere Leser mehr darüber. Die Geschichte von Thomas Dam und von seinen Trollen kann man im Museum nachverfolgen. Zwar wurde die Produktion in der Fabrik in Gjøll im Jahr 2012 eingestellt. Aber die Firma Dam Things existiert immer noch. Mittlerweile werden die Lucky Trolls als eine Art Danish Design angesehen. Sogar Hollywood haben die Trolle schon erobert. Alten Märchen zufolge haben die dänischen Gjøl-Trolle magische Kräfte. Sie lieben es, dich zum Lächeln zu bringen und glücklich zu sein, und manche Leute sagen auch, dass die Trolle dir Glück bringen. TIP: Das Tollmuseum ist täglich von 10 bis 18 Uhr geöffnet. Der Eintritt ist kostenlos. Zu finden ist es unter der Adresse: Limfjordsgade 50, 9440 Aabybro, Dänemark Das Trollmuseum haben wir 2019 besucht. Auf kleinem Raum erfahren wir viel über Thomas Dam und seine Trolle. Eine gute Stunde kann man für den Besuch nutzen. Die Trolle von Thomas Dambo Bei Thomas Dambo sind die Trolle alle ein bisschen größer. Der Künstler ist mittlerweile weltweit bekannt für seine großen Holztrolle. Die Skulpturen baut er aus Recycling-Material. Der erste Troll entstand im Jahr 2014 auf der dänischen Insel Mors und bekam den Namen Jack Lumber. Heute hat Dambo rund 100 seiner Trolle aufgestellt. Nicht nur in Dänemark sind die Trolle zu finden. Sie wurden bereits weltweit gesichtet. Auch schon in Hamburg. Die Trolle leben allerdings nicht auf öffentlichen Plätzen oder in Museen. Als Naturwesen gehören Trolle in die Natur und sind mit dieser auch verbunden. Die Trolle von Dambo spiegeln genau diese Verbindung von Mensch und Natur wieder. „Wir müssen raus, raus in die Natur. Ihre Vielfalt und Verletzlichkeit neu entdecken. Und wir kleinen Menschenkinder müssen uns endlich zusammenreißen und zurücknehmen. Wenn nicht, werden wir bald verschwunden sein.“ (Thomas Dambo) Den genauen Standort seiner Trolle verrät Dambo nicht. Vielmehr sollen wir hinaus in die Natur gehen und die Trolle suchen. Wir sollen ihnen zufällig begegnen oder ihnen völlig überraschend gegenüberstehen. Wie im realen Leben haben auch die Trolle ihren Lebenszyklus. Nach sechs bis sieben Jahre verwittert das verwendete recycelte Holz und wird wieder Teil der Natur. Auch das ist Bestandteil der Kunst von Thomas Dambo. Day 95 - to Mols Bjerge National Park

I’m on a mission to find Danish hills, not easy as the country’s highest point is only 171 metres, and marked solely by a rock on a grassy meadow. Rebild is such a place though, a place of hills. It’s a National Park of hilly heathland, the peaks rising to 100 metres in exceptional cases. But the area is well-organised, keeping the cyclists, MTBers, horse riders and hikers separate, and on well-maintained paths. It’s more like a National Park in the south of England, and nothing at all like those I have been in in the last few months further north. It is one or just two national parks in the country.

It put on a fine show today in the autumnal sunshine, on an almost warm day, at 17C.

After lunch I drove to the other national park, Mols Bjerge, which we will investigate tomorrow. It’s coastal, and has large areas of beech forest. I’m stopped over somewhere in the middle of it, accessible by rough tracks, and an excellent wilderness camp. Most likely my last wilderness stopover of this course, but completely dark, absolutely quiet, and not a soul for many a kilometre.

Once stopped up, we had an evening stroll, but it’s dark at 6 pm now, so back into to read, and then contribute to, a Guardian piece on the best horror short stories.

Halloween provides an opportunity for such things. Though I’ll read and watch horror throughout the year quite happily, I like to overindulge in these next few days.

By the time I contributed to the article, I was the 470th person. It has proved one of the most popular of their genre based features similar to this.

Beautiful indoor and outdoor art exhibit at Chihuly | Garden & Glass. This museum was one of many tours we did while we were in Seattle. The artist Dale Chihuly doesn’t have any know Danish-American ties but as a stupid Dane I actually thought that “Chihuly” was a fancy way to say and spell “Tivoli” because the gardens and colorful art really reminded me of the Danish amusement park. *facepalm* Nevertheless it is absolutely worth a visit if you’re in the Seattle-area. 

A little information on the artist: Dale Chihuly /tʃɪˈhuːli/ (born September 20, 1941) is an American glass sculptor and entrepreneur. His works are considered to possess outstanding artistic merit in the field of blown glass, "moving it into the realm of large-scale sculpture." The technical difficulties of working with glass forms are considerable, yet Chihuly uses it as the primary medium for installations and environmental artwork.

Day 94 - to Rebild, Denmark

It was an early start for the ferry this morning. On such days the van is a big advantage, as it can be just a few seconds from being in bed to driving - breakfast, most important for the dog, can be done once checked in.

We were in the line at the terminal, which is right in the middle of Gothenburg, by 7 am.

It was a three and a half hour crossing during which Roja was quite happy dozing in the van. As we travel south the weather gets steadily warmer, from -10 at Hemsedal last weekend, to 12C in Gothenburg, and 16C off the ferry in Denmark at Fredericksburg, and 18C further inland.

I located a forested public area, not quite a Nature Park, called Hammer Bakker where we took a leisurely lunch and then a couple of hours out.

Later in the afternoon we drove through, or rather around, Aalborg, and then south to Rebild, which is a big tourist outdoor area in the summer, but tonight, I arrived just before dark at 6 pm, there was just some determined MTBers and runners, in clubs, trying to squeeze the last bit of light out of the season.
