also i know youve lamented needing to understand jade better and listen. first understand she only knows how to be alone she will interact with others and the world as if they arent really seeing her and consequently itll never occur to her to open up because that is not something you can do when you are alone she is desperate and doesnt know it, and if she does know it its always put on the backburner. everyone in the world will have problems bigger than her and people they care about more. she is good at faking sincerity, if she crafts herself as being the genuine and heartfelt one then no one will think shes hiding anything and this is something she made for herself and knows she did yet still resents it a little no matter how bad she feels shes always been able to chin up and put on a smile to help others around her so she is very angry when someone cant do the same. shes lived like this her entire life, so when someone else cant do it, not even for a moment, it feels like a kick to the gut. it is simple to her to set aside your own emotions to care about a "bigger problem" or care about someone else. she is not sure how to do anything else she knows she will always be left on the wayside and tries to convince herself this doesnt make her angry too--its partially her own fault, anyway… it has to be, at least, because if this wasnt her own doing, because if the universe has just been cruel to her all this time for nothing and no one and especially not herself, she wouldnt be able to take that. secretly and quietly she longs for someone to know her, but how could they when she isnt even sure who that person is? she wants someone to tell her who that girl is. there will never be an answer shes satisfied with -star

In a world slightly to our left, the internet-at-large could have done for Ready Player One/Two what they did for Danny Phantom: leaned into the bizarre, horrifying, and creative sff concepts that were raised offhandedly once and never mentioned again, jettisoned all the stupid stuff the annoying creator thought was a Great Idea and was not, and played around in a sandbox of horrifying and fascinating sci-fi ideas, and made it our own. I would be on the front lines. I have so much Spite Fanfic Ideas in me.

Unfortunately this did not happen, probably because the Danny Phantom characters are endearing while the Ready Player One characters are insufferable, so it would have to center OCs who are actually affected by the nuclear war mentioned in one (1) sentence of backstory and then never again, or who are poor and trying to stretch their budgets and eat a lot of beans and ramen in the real world and then these asshole “philanthropists” think serving them VR gourmet meals solves this, or who have their brainscans unknowingly copied into the VR world so their brainscan AI copy self starts to become a person of their own separate from you, or who are struggling artists trying to make something new in a stagnating culture in the vice grip of a dead billionaire’s obsession with his own youth, or those Alpha Centauri babies, or…

we could do it though I believe in us. This is an unintentionally fascinating sci-fi world ripe for all sorts of Capitalism/VR Horror

hearing from young people that they get infinitely more respect when they're seen as a man and experiencing that myself when perceived as male vs female and also experiencing the scorn given to people who are sexed as "female" but appear to be masculine or even just gender non-conforming.

seeing people come away with the idea that this is a natural state of being and the reason we do not comply with sexist and misogynist stereotypes is not because they're not true but because we're not women. the idea that there's this majority of cis women who ARE women and possess some feature or characteristic that makes them Woman, not female, the idea that it's their choice to participate in systems of gender, the idea in some cases that it's their fault for the harm and abuse they experience under these systems of gender and heteronormativity. "well she dated a man she must have known what was coming." disdain for people regarded as "women".

hatred towards anyone of any sex who breaks the gender and sex binary and disrespect towards anyone attempting to work all of this out. the many trans people i know telling me it's not as simple as "trans man" or "trans woman" but the effort it takes to explain that is always too much so they must present a simplified version of themselves, within the boundaries of gender, in order to participate in society. and i sit here and wonder how we're ever going to get out of this
