The organizers revealed that Swift who’s released exclusive RSD records in the past will serve as their Global Record Store Day Ambassador. Chapter 8: Paris Fashion Week

A/N: Hello! I wanted to try something new and write from Jennie’s perspective. This chapter is a set of important flashbacks that will hopefully fill in the gap as to why Jennie has been acting weird with Y/N!

Paris Fashion Week, 6 months before Blackpink Documentary Press Event

[4:00 AM CET]

To say that you were happy to be back in Paris was an understatement. Every time you were here, whether it was for a concert or other business-related matters, you made time in your schedule to walk around the city. Europe– especially Paris had a special place in your heart. The fact that everything was foreign to you or that it was a global centre for the arts, you couldn’t exactly choose one reason why Paris made you so happy.

The reason for being in Paris this time was not a for a concert, but for Paris Fashion Week. Being the newest Chanel Ambassador, you were set to attend the Chanel show later in the morning. Pretty soon stylists and makeup artists would arrive and fill your hotel room, but for now you were enjoying the peaceful morning it was so far. It was still dark out as the sun wasn’t due to rise for another few hours, and from your hotel window below you could see store owners getting their shops ready for the early morning rush.

It was a strange feeling having to work and travel without the rest of your members, but it was something your company wanted you guys to quickly get used to. Thinking back to the last quarterly meeting, they mentioned that each member would be travelling and doing business deals separately as to dominate many sectors of the market you guys could. After all, building business relationships with many of the world’s top brands was important to your success. You guys worried that the separation would only lead to your guys’ disbandment, but they ensured you that it was all for Blackpink’s promotion. The more people that knew your name, the more people would get to know Blackpink, the group. From recording your new album to fashion shows, your schedule was packed and you could not be more excited for what was to come.

Only three weeks ago, Lisa had been here working with Celine and when she got back to Korea, she told you the exact same things only now you could now begin to understand. You were just about to facetime her when you heard a knock on your door. When you opened the door a number of people made their way into your room. Of these people included makeup artists, hair stylists, seamstresses and etc. These were the talented people that would be responsible for how good you would look later. After they had finished setting up, you sat in the makeup chair and waited for them to get to work.

Hours of applying makeup, hairstyling and fittings later you were finally on the way to the Chanel show. You nervously sat in the car with your manager and waited for the car to pull up to the entrance of the building. Looking outside your window you noticed the large crowds of fans, photographers, journalists and other celebrities who were waiting to get in the building, but one crowd that was gathering piqued your interest. You couldn’t see, but there were many camera flashes. It was bright out now, but even still you could see the flashes emanating from one spot. You wondered who they could be taking photos of.

Eventually the car halted to a stop and before you could open the door, somebody had already done it. After getting out you were led to an area where the photographers could take your photo. While standing there you were greeted with shouts from photographers and journalists alike, each of them were sticking a camera or microphone in your face to get either a photo of you or an interview with you. Timidly you did a few interviews before being taken away into the building and where you would be sitting for the show.

It was hard to breathe with so many people in the room. There were so many important people here and each of them were hustling and bustling about, minding their own business. To avoid looking out of place you were encouraged by your manager to step outside your comfort zone, so you set out to mingle. From your current view, there was a woman across room standing alone who you felt strangely drawn to. Maybe it was because she was the only one in the room who wasn’t busy and looked friendly enough for you to approach.

Her face was the first thing you noticed about her. To you, she was uniquely beautiful with features you never knew you were attracted to; she had kind eyes and a warm smile. She was wearing a fitted navy blazer that was embroidered with gold embellishments and underneath she wore a black turtleneck, tight black pants and black heels to match. Her outfit consisted of dark colours, but they only seemed to accentuate the curves that made her figure. Intrigued by her now, you couldn’t stop staring. Who was she?

Before you could reach her though, her attention was quickly grabbed by another and instantly her face lit up. You felt a tinge of envy as it wasn’t you who was responsible for her now enlightened mood. While you silently waited for her, you felt someone grab your arm. When you turned you saw that it was a friend that you made during a shoot for Chanel. You hugged her and exchanged the normal pleasantries that was expected when reuniting with an old friend. Trying your best to give her all your attention, you found yourself keeping an eye out for the mystery woman; making sure not to lose track of her and that she was always in the corner of your eye. Your friend however caught you looking and asked if you knew her.

“I don’t, but do you?” you asked.

She explained, “if I’m not mistaken that is Y/N Y/L/N. A new and up and coming film maker. I met her on the carpet outside when she arrived. She told me she just released her film and is quite new to these kinds of things. Although I only had few minutes with her before the press swarmed her, she seemed kind. Did you want me to introdu–”

Before she could finish her question, the speakers around the room suddenly were blasting an automated message. Both in French and English.

Ladies and Gentlemen please make your way to your assigned seating. The show will begin shortly. On behalf of the chairman of Chanel, Alain Wertheimer, and the Chanel brand, we thank you for coming and welcome you to Paris Fashion Week.

You wanted your friend to finish her sentence but both of you only had enough time to say goodbye as your managers took you to your seats. Unfortunately, you never got to be introduced to Y/N as she was constantly surrounded by press. It was the one thing that lingered in your head even after Paris Fashion Week and when you arrived back in South Korea. If it was meant to be, the next time you met her you wouldn’t let her slip away.

South Korea, 2 days after PFW

[7:30 AM KST]

Having arrived back home from fashion week you were exhausted. When you arrived at the dorms early in the evening, you slept until the next morning. Normally you would have returned back to your own personal apartment, but the girls had already made plans to have lunch together at the dorm. Your schedules for the next few weeks consisted of only individual projects then of course after you were done with those you would comeback for the next quarterly meeting to discuss newer projects. An endless cycle, but you loved it. Being busy.

When you woke up the next day the first person you wanted to see was Jisoo. She always knew how to calm you down after a busy workweek and you could count on her honest opinion. You missed Rosé and Lisa too, but their high energy levels early in the morning was too much for today. Quietly and carefully you snuck into Jisoo’s room and after closing the door lightly you climbed into bed with her. Her back was facing toward you.

Right away she turned around with her eyes still closed, she didn’t need to open them to see who it was. “How was Paris?” she asked groggily.

Not wanting to bore her back to sleep with all the minute details of your trip you skipped over the business stuff and went straight for the stuff you needed advice on. “Business as usual. But unnie, I need you to be honest with me okay?”

Opening her eyes for the first time she looked at you and examined your face before saying, “the day I stop giving you my honest opinion, I give you permission to kick me.”

Embarrassed to say it with her looking at you now, you shoved your head in the space between her neck and pillow while you hugged her tightly. She laughed and hugged you back.

Letting out a sigh you began. You told her about the girl you saw and how you found yourself feeling oddly discontent with how things ended. It wasn’t like you could pursue her randomly and had you just gone up to talk to her right away all of this could have been avoided. “Why do I feel like things are unfinished? Like we were meant to talk. I know it’s stupid, I should just let it go. How can I be so hung up on a girl I didn’t meet?”

“I’m curious to see what she looks like now. How pretty was she for you to have you so messed up? Don’t stress about it, I’m sure it will go away in the next few days–” before she could finish, both Lisa and Rosé busted into the room to greet you. They both jumped on the bed causing you and Jisoo both to scream as the cold air now came rushing in underneath the warm covers. Eventually when they calmed down you got to tell Lisa and Rosé about Y/N. But instead of advice you were hoping for they teased you about her relentlessly until they moved onto the next inside joke.

Jisoo never got the chance to google Y/N and after a few weeks she was right about the discontentment you felt. It disappeared after few months only to reappear when you saw Y/N again at the business meeting to discuss your new partnership.

South Korea, hours after Blackpink Documentary Press Event

[11:56 PM KST]

It was few hours after your dinner with Y/N and the members. On the outside you kept things calm and collected, but the minute you saw her you were freaking out. Too many things on the schedule didn’t give you time to talk to the members privately. Plus you didn’t want to make things awkward by pulling them aside, so you waited until you got back to the dorm.

After the busy day, as if like clockwork you each made your way to your rooms to start getting ready for bed. But this time was different. You called everyone to the living room and told them you had to tell them something. Slowly coming from their rooms, they one by one entered the living room where you sat.

It had been months at this point since you last saw Y/N. You were told you were meeting with a new director for a new documentary, but your managers didn’t exactly give you a name, only the company she worked for. They only gave a USB with a set interviews they had gathered with Y/N in them, and even a few of her documentaries.

An unlucky chain of events occurred after that. The night before your meeting you were supposed to study the contents of the USB so that during the meeting the next day, you would at least know a little about her. Unfortunately, you fell asleep and didn’t watch with the rest of the members. So, when you walked into the meeting and saw the familiar face standing there you felt your heart fall through to the pit of your stomach. As much as you tried not to stare, you couldn’t help it.

With her eyes half closed and the beginnings of a yawn Rosé asked, “what is it Unnie?”

“Y/N is,” was all you could say.

“Y/N is?” Lisa asked.

Starting again with the intent to finish you let out, “Y/N is the girl I couldn’t talk to at the Chanel show during Paris Fashion Week last year.”

Jisoo, Lisa and Rosé all wide awake now looked at you wide eyed before they fell to their knees in front of you. It was nothing serious, but they were just surprised at the coincidence. They bombarded you with questions.

“Are you sure unnie?” “You knew the whole day and didn’t say anything?!” “So… does this mean you have a crush on our director?” “Are you going to tell her?”

Taking a deep breath, one at a time you answered as honestly as you could. To think this all could have started because of Paris Fashion Week.

Taylor Swift has been tapped as the first-ever global ambassador for Record Store Day, with the singer stepping up to help mark the 15th anniversary of the annual celebration. In an announcement, the RSD braintrust wrote:

“RSD AMBASSADOR (Taylor’s Version). Thanks to Taylor Swift for putting on the sash and serving as the first ever GLOBAL RECORD STORE DAY AMBASSADOR, helping us celebrate the culture of the independent record store around the world.”

Anna Lundy and Doyle Davis of Grimey’s said in a statement:

“We’re thrilled to learn that Taylor Swift is our 2022 Record Store Day Ambassador! Swift has shown her love and support for independent record stores by not only supporting our shop specifically during the dark, early days of the pandemic, when she directly donated to help us support our staff, but also by steering her eager, excited, and dedicated fans to independent record stores, places that many of them visited for the first time while in search of her signed CDs. As Swift has grown as an artist, we’ve watched her fans grow with her and have been delighted to see her taking control of her recordings and working with musicians like Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner, artists whose music has resonated in shops like ours for years. 9 ways you can help your favourite band

Cancelled tours mean one thing for touring musicians: no income. But you can make a real difference

9 ways to help your favourite acts

1. Keep buying tickets For small acts, this is the most direct and immediate way they can make money and it is a critical part of their income. Buy tickets in advance (rather that walk up on the night) as the venue, promoter and act will be closely monitoring sales – and shows can get pulled if ticket sales are slow. Even if the worst comes to the worst and the show is cancelled, you will be refunded. Buying tickets now is a very public display of support, especially for a band that's rescheduled its tour for November.

2. Buy merchandise from band's online stores If a band are not able to tour, their online store is a good place to show support. Rather than buying their CD or LP from a “tax-efficient” online retail behemoth, buying direct from the act means that more of the money actually goes to them. They still have fulfilment costs, but the margins in selling this way are much higher. Plus they generally have nice limited-edition items (e.g. signed or coloured vinyl) and offer good deals on bundles (e.g. album + T-shirt + ticket) that can keep the wolf from the door in the lean times.

3. Pre-order the album If your favourite act has a new album coming out later this year, check if they have pre-orders open on their website, on iTunes or other online retailers. Buying it in advance not only means that some cash is coming in, it also sends a message to the retailers that there is growing anticipation for the release. Strong pre-order numbers can see the album pushed up the pre-order charts on download stores and online retailers, resulting in extra editorial support that it might not otherwise get.

4. If they have a Bandcamp presence, buy music there Bandcamp is an enormously important platform for new acts as it lets them easily sell music downloads and merchandise items direct to fans – and they get to keep the bulk of sales income. On top of this, Bandcamp has a subscription feature that means acts can make money from fans taking out a monthly or annual subscription in exchange for access to a wealth of things like live recordings, demos, interviews, early access to shows and more. It also means acts know what money they have coming in each month and can budget accordingly.

5. If they have a crowd-funding page, fund it The ugly and painful collapse of PledgeMusic at the start of 2019 had catastrophic effects for a multitude of acts as projects they were trying to get off the ground either fell apart or their profits were wiped out. It exposed how important crowd-funding is for so many acts.

Thankfully there are many other platforms – such as Patreon, Kickstarter, Indiegogo, ArtistShare and more – offering acts ways to get much-needed money to bankroll their next record or tour. They all have targets to hit otherwise the project gets cancelled or scaled back (depending on what platform they are using) so every pledge counts. Now, more than ever, it is critical to show your support, not just for what an act has done in the past, but also what they want to do in the future.

6. Get political: campaign for better deals for acts Musicians have to do much more these days just to keep their heads above water and sometimes they are fighting against unfair systems or seemingly insurmountable odds. There are, however, schemes and bodies out there that are trying to tilt the balance back in their favour. In light of this, lobbying from fans can genuinely change things.

Take Sofar Sounds, for example, which allowed acts to play in a host’s home – a great way to get in front of new audiences. Except acts felt they were not getting paid properly. The company, seeing the groundswell in favour of the musicians and being dragged over the coals and fined by the New York Department of Labor over how it treated “ambassadors”, changed things and said it would move to give acts better payments.

Meanwhile bodies like Music Venue Trust are fighting to keep grassroots venues open. Supporting these initiatives and signing petitions is not so much digital landfill: it really can change things for the better for acts at the sharp end.

7. Treat streaming as “try before you buy” The record business has been back in recovery position in recent years (after a decade and a half of steep decline) and streaming is a huge part of its financial renaissance, making up almost half of global revenues in 2018. But this digital windfall is not always making its way down to the smaller acts. The fractions of a penny per play paid by a service like Spotify or Apple Music add up if you’re doing hundreds of millions of streams but not if your average track does 40,000 streams. Treat these streaming services as a tasting menu and a way to discover a new act; but when you find that album you can’t stop streaming, instead of hitting repeat, go and buy it from their online store or Bandcamp page.

8. Sign up to mailing lists & subscribe to channels This might sound a bit innocuous or even dull, but signing up to an act’s mailing list is one of the most supportive things you can do for them that doesn’t actually involve putting your hand in your pocket. The way social platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter work is that “organic reach” (i.e. getting in front of people without actually paying) is pretty much non-existent today and bands have to shell out to promote their own posts on the platforms that stand between them and fans.

A mailing list, however, is theirs and they own it, meaning they have a way to talk to fans that is virtually free. Also following their official profiles on Spotify and Apple Music as well as subscribing to their channel on YouTube lets the platforms know that not only are you a fan but that these acts have the kinds of fans who want to know everything about them as soon as they can. That all sends up positive messages to the algorithmic gods that decide what acts get pushed up their recommendations and when. It also means you get notified when they have new music so you won’t miss out.

9. Tell your friends That’s the joy and the power of being a fan – that compulsion to be a total evangelist for the new act you have just discovered and love. Talking about the new album on social media, posting YouTube links to the new video, telling everyone that you have bought tickets to the tour – the cumulative effect of that can be significant.

Personal recommendations are always better than someone seeing an ad as it cuts through the noise and those who see your passion will often be intrigued and play the music. Word of mouth was always the best way for acts to build a following. Now you have a loudhailer and your advocacy can be the best weapon your new favourite band will ever have. May your enthusiasm be undimmed.

Even as Kobe Bryant moved beyond his career in the N.B.A. and into his next chapter as a Hollywood and tech mogul, he could never fully leave the ugliest part of his past behind.

Bryant — among nine people, including his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, who died on Sunday in a helicopter crash outside Los Angeles — was charged with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman in 2003. But as in the vast majority of cases involving accusations of sexual violence, there was no clear resolution. There was no verdict.

Prosecutors dropped the case just before it was scheduled to go to trial, citing the accuser’s unwillingness to testify. A lawsuit the woman filed against Bryant ended in a settlement, the details of which have never been made public.

In the era before #MeToo — the societal reckoning with the frequent sexual harassment and abuse women endure at work and in their personal lives — Bryant resumed a career that had never really paused. Throughout the 2003-04 season, while the case was still being litigated, he flew back and forth between court appearances in Colorado and games, often arriving just minutes before tip-off.

The Lakers made the N.B.A. finals that season but lost their bid for a fourth championship in five seasons. Bryant, however, would win two more N.B.A. titles, plus two Olympic gold medals, before his retirement in 2016, and he continued his evolution into a global celebrity, an international ambassador for both his sport and Nike, his major sponsor.

Yet in 2018, just seven months after he won an Academy Award for best animated short film, Bryant was dropped from the jury of a film festival.

“This is an urgent time to say NO to toxic and violent behavior against women,” read a petition urging organizers of the Animation Is Film Festival to disassociate themselves from Bryant.

As he had in the past, Bryant declined to discuss the sexual assault case. He said he was “disappointed” with the decision of the festival organizers but was now focused on changing the world “through diverse stories, characters and leadership.”

For a moment, Bryant was back where he had been in 2003 — someone who, like Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey, operated at the pinnacle of his profession but stood accused of a terrible crime.

Weinstein is currently being tried in a rape case in New York City, the rare celebrity who has had to face such criminal charges.

The case against Bryant began on June 30, 2003, when he checked into the Cordillera Lodge and Spa in Edwards, Colo. He was there to have a knee operation at a clinic in nearby Vail.

After being led to his room by a concierge, Bryant asked her to return later and give him a private tour of the property. She did, and then Bryant invited her into his room. They both said later that they began kissing, but what happened in the next few minutes became the heart of the dispute. The woman told the police that Bryant had raped her. Bryant said they had consensual sex.

Prosecutors seemed to have a strong case. According to court documents, an examination of the woman at a hospital revealed a bruise on her neck and tears in her vaginal wall. Both her underwear and Bryant’s shirt were bloody. Bryant told the police he had not explicitly asked for consent.

While the issue of consent has long been at the heart of sex crime laws, how it is understood and taught has evolved — in part because of high-profile cases like the one against Bryant. “No means no” has given way to “yes means yes,” and the idea of explicit consent has become the standard, rather than an expectation that an objecting participant must say no.

Almost immediately the case against Bryant became a news media circus, the biggest celebrity prosecution since the O.J. Simpson trial. Quickly though, the accuser’s reputation came under attack. Bryant’s lawyer, Pamela Mackey, said the woman’s name in open court six times during one hearing — even though the police and court officials had tried to preserve her anonymity — and asked if her injuries could have been caused “by having sex with three men in three days.” Television crews camped outside the home of the accuser’s parents, and her name was leaked by the court system three times.

Like the Simpson case a decade before, the Bryant case quickly became about much more than what had happened in that hotel room. It was seen through the historical prism of white women falsely accusing black men of sexual violence (the woman in the Bryant case was white). At the same time, the case sparked commentary that perpetuated stereotypes about false accusations of rape.

After the case was dropped, Bryant issued a lengthy statement, apologizing to the woman and acknowledging her perspective of their encounter, which is farther than most public apologies go. “Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual,” he said in statement, “I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did.”

With the legal troubles behind him, Bryant created an alter ego, calling himself “Black Mamba” — after Africa’s deadliest snake, which figured in the 2003 movie “Kill Bill.”

“The whole process for me was trying to figure out how to cope with this,” Bryant told The Washington Post in 2018. “I wasn’t going to be passive and let this thing just swallow me up.”

Eventually there were Mamba shoes, a Mamba Sports Academy and the nickname “Mambacita” for Gianna, the second-born of the four daughters Bryant shared with his wife, Vanessa.

Before the sexual assault case, Bryant was sometimes in the shadow of Shaquille O’Neal, playing Robin to Shaq’s Batman. After Bryant adopted the Mamba persona, he emerged as his own man. He helped create the dissension that led Phil Jackson to retire and the Lakers to trade O’Neal, though Jackson returned to coach Bryant and the Lakers again.

But years after saying “I also want to make it clear that I do not question the motives of this young woman,” Bryant seemingly did just that.

To explain why he would not comment on the death of Trayvon Martin, the black teenager who was shot to death while returning home from a convenience store, he had a conversation with the journalist Jemele Hill. “He was speaking from the experience of someone who had been on trial for sexual assault,” she wrote in a column on Monday, “and, in his mind, had been wrongfully accused.” Bryant later apologized to Martin’s family.

And in 2018, reflecting on the sponsors that cut ties with him after he was arrested, including McDonald’s and Coca-Cola, Bryant said they did so because he was too “gritty.”

Later in his life, Bryant became a big supporter of women’s athletics. He took his daughter Gianna to watch the Connecticut Huskies basketball team, recorded voice overs for the N.C.A.A. women’s basketball tournament and talked constantly about the W.N.B.A.

And at those 2018 Oscars? Hours after Frances McDormand, winner of the Best Actress award, gave a powerful speech about the need to include more women in the film business, she was hobnobbing with Bryant at a post-show party.
