"I'VE GOT THE MONITORS UP AS FAR AS THEY CAN GO! BUT THEY'RE NOT MAKING ANY SOUND!"
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on Lou, Moe, Sterling and Doug of American rock band, THE VELVET UNDERGROUND, crowded in a corner of TTG Studios in Los Angeles, CA, playing together in late 1968, rehearsing/ recording for their eponymously titled third album. 📸: Sandy Schor.
EXTRA INFO: Photos from the VU book, “I Met Myself in a Dream…That’s the Story of the Third Album," featuring 184 photos taken by Sandy Schor of the band in and around the Los Angeles studio, Nov 6th and Nov 8th of 1968, as well as many other things related to their third record.
"These pictures give you a real sense of how THE VELVET UNDERGROUND recorded their self titled third album. The studio was large, they had room to spread out, but they chose to huddle close, creating music so quiet the engineer was reported to say “I've got the monitors up as far as they can go, but they're not making any sound!” These were songs the Velvets had recently honed on the road. As Doug put it:
"Essentially, all those songs were already being played. The album itself, when it was recorded, was done basically as a live album. All four of us played together for the tracks and then we went back and overdubbed the vocals and any solos ... It was very organic. One of the reasons it has that particular sound is that it was just pulled out of the band while it was touring, and so it wasn't a lot of time to over-think it. It was just played.""

LECTURE 19: COMING APART (PART 2): Thursday, January 2, 1969 – Check out the sounds (audio only) of The Beatles on the first day of the GET BACK/LET IT BE recording sessions at Twickenham Film Studios in London. You’ll hear lots of familiar song snippets and overlapping voices in these black-and-white scenes. The audio recording speaks is intriguing and revealing. The Beatles appear to be in a spirited mood here, but they tended to behave whenever the cameras were rolling and the tape machines were recording. Still, this is fascinating to listen to, and it’s fun to be a fly on the wall, just listening to this brilliance unfold.

STUPID SHITLIBS HATE HER NOW BECAUSE SHE VOTES REPUBLICAN -- STILL KOOLER THAN YOU.
PIC INFO: Spotlight on Maureen "Moe" Tucker (born August 26, 1944), American musician, singer-songwriter, and former percussionist of American rock band THE VELVET UNDERGROUND, c. late 1968, photographed at TTG Studios, Hollywood, CA, during recording sessions for the band's self-titled third studio album, released in March 1969.
Wishing ol' Moe a belated happy and whopping 80th birthday last month, and she's been alive long enough to make up her own damn mind regarding socio-economic and political matters in general. She lived through AND survived the entire sixties decade, FFS.

LECTURE 18: COMING APART (PART 1): Check out this mini-documentary on the making of The Beatles’ self-titled album, a.k.a. The White Album, with footage from the recording sessions at EMI Studios in 1968. The video captures – quite memorably – the breadth and diversity of the album.  As far as the range of sound goes, The White Album was truly all over the map, and underscored the ever evolving musical tastes of the band members, particularly the ways they were growing apart in their styles.
