When I was in college, I created a playlist of piano jazz for studying (or writing). It featured music by Hazel Scott, Red Garland, Mary Lou Williams, and more. To the classic music lovers, what artists provide the soundtrack for your creative process?

Each year Alpha, Ifrit, and Dewdrop are tasked with elaborate holiday light displays come Christmas time. One early morning in November they can be found gathered around the kitchen table: someone's laptop is out and open to a spreadsheet of all the lights, the blueprints of the abbey strewn across the table and covered with technical drawings and photos of previous light displays. The coffee pot is half empty, tea kettle on the stove whistling away as they all talk over each other. They spend hours drawing, designing, discussing logistics and how long their newest idea will take.
The trio started the tradition when Dewdrop became fire ghoul, as they are all considered light bringers. That first year the display rudimentary as Dew was still battling the effects of his element transition, some lighted garlands and eternal candles in each window were all the managed to do as a team. As the years wore on, the fire ghouls drafted and created bigger and better displays each year. Ifrit's favorite was the year the constructed a full size replica of the Gävle goat in the middle of Mountain's garden, in warm white lights and red lighted accents for the ribbons. For Alpha, it was the year they created a fully lit Loch Ness Monster on a floating platform in the lake. Dewdrop loves all the intricate and time consuming displays, but his favorite is still the simplicity of that first year, always putting up a lit garland and candle in his own window to remember it by.

special interest time! (this is a part of the Get @brisling To Like Jazz project because i hope narrativizing it makes it more fun lmao, but i'll post it for u all too)
our friend richard earlier showed me jazz musician Bill Evans' album Conversations With Myself
listen to this first. to the piano the entire time, even when charlie rouse is playing good saxophone. sometimes the pianist gets up and watches. just until the end of the piano solo. (the drum solo is cool and the bass solo is ELITE but)
youtube
(also, that was my favorite jazz recording ever.)
then, this, for only a sec at the beginning. this is how the song goes actually
finally this!
it feels like Song Criticism. I mean criticism in the way that Anton Ego means it when he eats the rat's ratatouille.
bill evans plays like this. he plays beautifully
he was the pianist on the most important jazz record, Kind of Blue.
he was a flautist and plays piano like it's a woodwind. it's soft and technical and so so beautiful.
thelonious monk plays like you've just heard. he is a weird-ass pianist. he plays… wholly uniquely? it's ragtime based i hear. he may have invented bebop (the most popular and enduring jazz idiom). even if that's not the whole truth, he's why jazz uses 9th chords so much. he used to hang out at a bar with charlie parker and dizzy gillespie and he was better than any other pianist that would come to try and play. he's probably the most-covered jazz musician because he wrote so many good songs. his music is also Singular, and people hated it. miles davis (the famousest) was KNOWN for hating his playing. you can hear on bags' groove, miles told him to never play (the pianist's role is harmony under the solo) while miles was playing.
every time someone else plays a monk song, it's kind of apologetic. like, well yeah it's a beautiful composition, but i wish it weren't so bizarre with those weird plunky notes and wholetone scales. we're just going to play the melody, because THAT'S beautiful. it always feels a little like theft.
(beautiful song, but i dislike it)
BUT bill evans is taking the song on its own terms! he's using the song to say, listen to THIS SONG. (and also to say, look at what a sick pianist i am)
after the intro, he does the melody in a monk impression first. on one hand it's a flex to play like monk, but on the other it's weird to do, it's weird to hear a song that exists in everyone's imagination as melody-and-chord-symbols played like its composer would play it. and he kind of… unravels it
he plays a minor third and you're like, aw shit that's a monk quote! and then he plays it again and you're like oh that is. literally just the blues. (this is the blues:
youtube
) and then you think, i have learned something about why thelonious monk plays like that.
there's a section where he just does normal bebop chord comps and a normal walking bassline, like he's pretending to be a backing band. that too is monk.
it's commentary and contextualization, but even better is the bill-evansisms there too, the things far too soft and too thin for monk to ever play. the guy yes-ands the song, he sharpens corners that famouser musicians (miles. chick corea) try to polish down.
anyway, it's a good song. (you don't gotta read all of that though)

THE ADVICE BOX
“I really like it here at the monastery and I’ve made a lot of friends, but sometimes, I miss my friends back home. What should I do?” > You should write letters home! It might not cure your homesickness, but they’ll at least know you’re thinking of them. > Try and recreate what you liked about your homeland and share that with your friends here! You might be away from home, but you can still bring it with you here! > You should try and visit whenever you get a break from school! Nothing beats actually being with the people you care about most. (Correct Answer)

xkit-rewritten successfully installed on my replacement (new) laptop and now I have tumblr on something that isn't a cell phone/ipad.
But still engaging in laptop set up activities.
Also very tired. My body gets slammed on days when the weather shifts back to wet-cold-dim and it takes me 24 hours to adjust to it although this time of year, it feels like a car-crash every few days as there is far too much of back and forth between high-summer (cool but sunny 5evah) vs veryearlysunrise-verylatesunset-winter (cold, damp, clouded over). My body is just not into this shit.
Moved the laptop into bed where I can be warm and covered in blankets (and thick wool socks) while listening to a playlist of jazz classics. Oscar Peterson. Charlie Parker. Miles Davis. Bill Evans Trio. etc etc. etc.
But liking this replacement laptop a lot -- A LOT. This is actually the first real thing I am typing on it (rather than typing passwords nine million times ffs so many things requiring various passwords).
I think I'm gonna like writing on this machine. Much nicer than dying laptop (so much more screeeeeeen realestate) and a huge improvement over typing on my ipad which is mostly what I have been doing (on a nice keyboard but... so limited. so small. And doesn't balance well on my lap either or feel comfortable for typing on the couch or in bed)
NO WONDER WHY I HAVEN'T FELT LIKE WRITING ALL THAT MUCH.
Ahhhhhh. Music: The Very Thought of You (Red Garland, Paul Chambers, & Art Taylor). Chefs kiss.

🌸❤ Lovely Ponigiri ❤🌸
The ponigiri booth stands out from the crowd. It seemed Hiroko had spared no expense (nor small amount of effort!) in making the booth unique. Rather than a tent awning and pop-up stall counters, the ponigiri stand appears to be a a genuine wooded yatai cart! No doubt brought all the way from Ransei, where the ponigiri stands were a staple of Aurora's summertime festivals, though heaven only knows how Hiroko managed to have it dragged all the way out here to Paldea in time for the festival. Atop the stall sits a hand-painted wooden sign declaring its name. A bright red backdrop with pink drifting cherry blossom petals and curly white letters: Lovely Ponigiri. (Along with the original characters painted just below in much smaller print. Educational and delicious!)
Along the back wall is the menu, listing each available filling and rice type. (It appeared the price had gone up slightly since the first few days, to 500p. A strategic choice to reel in customers early on to get word of mouth going. If anyone asked about the increase, they had sold far more than they were expecting in that first week! If they were going to keep up with demand, they'd need to raise the cost a little.) The necessary appliances were all lined up on a small table below. Either side was roped off, just to ensure nobody got too close. The inner counter was a small prep table where they could roll the rice balls; between it and the outer counter was a small cooler display, showcasing finished ponigiri with small labels on each row listing the fillings: red tempura, blue kombu, purple adzuki. Of course, the standard stools along the outer counter had been forsaken in the interest of space, but that meant the exterior could be used for decoration instead. Heart-shaped paper garlands were draped along the edge of the counter, along with a few small trinkets. Hiroko and Shiori both had their war fans on display, as they were both decorated with the sort of charming floral imagery that was perfect for an event like this.
And then, of course, there was the real attraction: a fluffy little shiny eevee (with a special pink-and-white flower crown for the occasion!) lounging on the exterior countertop. (They were, of course, mindful not to let her waltz around within the stand. Furry rice balls were not on the menu.) Koharu was the perfect bait for potential customers—she adored attention, and nobody could resist such a precious little pokémon! Hiroko, Katsu, and Shiori alternated out on shifts, as the booth could really only fit two people comfortably, but of the three, Hiroko seemed to be at the helm most often, always present to make small talk and charm customers into making a purchase or two. Just behind the booth was a small space reserved for the trio's other links—Katsu's decidueye, Shiori's hatterene, and Hiroko's ever-loyal glaceon Ryou—who were all a bit less eager for the spotlight than little Koharu.

House Of Eternal Day for Curlos. I know it's not Christmas yet, but Toy Day in Animal Crossing is so cute. I had a lot of fun doing this one. First up was the yard. I wanted the house and yard to look really festive and fun. On the left side of the yard, I put up a trio of Christmas trees with the big one in the middle and a couple of small ones on the side. I added a few snow people and snowflake decorations. On the right side of the yard, I added a rainbow Christmas tree with decorative gift boxes and a sled near the tree. I put cute reindeer decorations and added snowflake decorations to match the other side. I used tall ornaments for the border path to add to the colorful displays and a wreath on the door.
Inside, I made the living area and kitchen space look really festive like a holiday party. The Toy Day wallpaper was perfect for this because it's animated with the lights twinkling. I used the wood block flooring because it complemented the wallpaper really well. I made the kitchen have fresh baked goods like cookies and bread with festive looking drinks. I put a couple tables to the side filled with a variety of foods. In the living room area, I put a big Christmas tree with a few toys under the tree. I added a fireplace with a snowglobe, candle, and stockings hung above the fireplace. I put near the sitting area with cute sofas and a coffee table. I decorated the small table with a cute pinecone tree and put a little cup of coffee next to it. I added the Toy Day throw rug to tie the whole room together making a perfect holiday party space.
Upstairs, I made a cozy Winter bedroom with a bathroom for Curlos. I used the snowy wallpaper as an accent wall to make it look like there were windows to show it snowing outside. I used the dark herringbone wallpaper for the rest of the room to give the room a nice look of warmth. I used dark brown brick flooring because it looked nice with the wallpaper. Using the partition walls gives the feel of a separate room with the bathroom. I added a patchwork bed with the country quilt pattern and I put a cute snowflake throw rug under the bed. I added a wooden dresser with a mini tree and a glowing star clock. I put a little side table with a festive ornament lamp and a cute ornament mobile on the wall. I put in a couple of wooden bookshelves and a study desk with a chair. I thought it would be nice for the bedroom to have a small Christmas tree. I added a nice blue sofa and a big pinecone tree next to it with a festive garland on the wall. I then added a nice red Persian rug which completed the entire room. Curlos is now ready for Toy Day and all the holiday parties!
