⭐ Paper band stars/ snowflakes ⭐

Super cute stars based on the method by Henrike Bratz. Originally these are intended to be made with straw, but it can get super fiddly so I’ve decided to use the super reliable Japanese paper band this time! I get mine in D a i s o. They sell them as a DIY set - I usually grab two in different colours.

What I like about them is they’re not an expensive DIY (no cost if you use collected straw), can be a sweet gift on their own, and they look quite lovely. They’re easy to store away and don’t deteriorate in time. So sick of DIY you put a lot of effort in to just scrap after, like meh. I use mine to decorate gifts, and they can be hung later.

🎥 Here is the link for the video I’ve put together a few years back on how I make these with water reeds [video] and 8 rays. These ones here in the images are made with 12 rays - just need to adjust the amount of notches on the toilet paper roll to 12. You can play around with leaving different amount of spaces between rays - can get pretty cool results. What if you spray paint them in gold after? Idk, should try myself.

If you could have certain LIs in different books, which LIs would you pick to move to which book and why?

First and foremost, get Robin Tora the FUCK out of Rising Tides because that book was so cliché, boring, and paywalled. Robin was the only interesting character in that whole book IMO and the only one I even remotely cared about. Not sure which book I’d move them to though. But definitely out of RT.

Then maybe I’d move Angel Savage to like, I don’t know, most horror books other than WTD, but not It Lives or ThoBM. Maybe Bloodbound. She seems like she’d fit there. Personally, she really reminded me of Juanita Sanchez (her personality, her crazy fashion, her dyed hair), but unlike Juanita, she always really got on my nerves. I just never really thought Angel fit naturally in WTD. Not to mention, she seemed waaaay too OP.

Ash Tanaka and Reed Hanson would fit better in a book like Wishful Thinking or maybe even #LoveHacks. Any lighthearted romance book. They had no real reason to be in Bachelorette Party because let’s be real, BP would’ve worked best as an exclusively WLW book. Ash and Reed, as nice as they were, felt super shoehorned in.

I’d also move Devin Wright out of TPS and into Wishful Thinking, because I think they’d work really well in that book too, what with them being into journalism and all. I felt TPS really wasted their potential.

This one is a little out there, but I think Lily Spencer would work awesome in The Elementalists. I loved her in Bloodbound and I know if she had been in The Elementalists she would’ve rocked it.

Finally, I’d move Shane Parker out of Platinum and into The Freshman+ series. Because, I love you Shane, but you were so out of place compared to Avery and Raleigh. I think if he had replaced Chris or Kaitlyn (both love interests I wasn’t crazy about) he would’ve fit better.

See if your state is on the page above. If it is, you can help with the tips below. If it's not or you're not from the USA, read on anyway. Something will be relevant regardless.

Show up to hearings. These bills don't exist in a vacuum, but it feels that way when the only people showing up tp hearings and meetings are circle-jerking sharing their anti-trans commentary. Show up, call out the flaws in the bill. Make your demands and encourage others to do the same.

Calling your state representatives - House and Senate - Regardless of Party Affiliation. You can email or write a letter if you must but calls are more urgent in these offices and will be taken more seriously. Bonus points if you physically show up and schedule an appointment one-on-one. Your reps also host town halls, in multiple locations in your state and in DC. Check their respective websites for addresses and dates. They will open the floor for questions after delivering a statement. Remind them what the constituents REALLY want - Trans Rights.

Donate. Trans-run organizations, trans crowdfunding requests, trans content creators, trans friends.

Protest. Use the same protester safety tips you used with the black lives matter movement and stick to them religiously. Educate yourself on the red flags in a protest environment and how to stay safe.

You can also do any of the following, though it's generally recommended that you do them along with the above items - these should be treated as supplemental to one or more of the above:

Support your trans friends. We're not okay. Genuinely. So, remind us you're there. Silence is deafening and sometimes we need to know we're not alone. Take a moment to hear us - our stories, our ideas. Practice listening.

Watch where your money goes. It's hard to avoid everything that sucks. All consumption hurts someone and a lot of basic needs are monopolized by one company with a hundred names. But there are still places where you can make a difference and it can't hurt to try. Restaurant hates homos? Go to the one next door and recommend accordingly. Author is known for being a TERF? Cut off their cash flow. To these companies a dollar is endorsement, so endorse someone else with your dollar. If it's not a need, maybe skip it.

If your state is NOT above, or you're out of the USA, make a plan anyway. Keep a book of contacts, resources and actions you can take. Call, write and email your representatives anyway as a preventative measure. Make sure they see that their jobs will be on the line if they don't hear you. Check for bills in your area that are relevant, spread the word about them.

If you are not from the USA, see what your nation is facing. Take similar steps but adjust them to your local systems. Who can you contact locally to make your voice heard? What can you attend to share it? Who can you help nearby?

Follow trans activists and reporters. Online trans figures can give you a heads-up on bills, news and other activist info. Erin Reed is someone I recommend highly for this, and her reach extends out of the USA sometimes.

Things of 2022, Part 4: YouTube

None of these are new this year, but have all gone up a level and continue to educate and entertain.

I stumbled upon Philosophy Tube in January 2021, two months after I came out, and the first video I watched was Abi's coming out video. Utterly blew me away as it expressed so much of what I had been feeling, but had been unable to put into words. This year her videos: Vaccines & Freedom, Transhumanism, and the Crisis in the UK NHS have been masterpieces. This channel has expanded my thinking enormously over the last two years, and made me question many things I had taken for granted. Well made and extremely well researched.

This one could have gone in the podcast list, but really works best on YouTube with the slide deck. As someone with an engineering background, this hits a lot of my interests. In depth looks at engineering disasters? sign me up. Yes they can be quite long, and sometimes erratic, but the enthusiasm for the subjects is self evident. The episodes this year on The Ponte Morandi and the Y2K problem were standouts for me, and older ones on the Space Shuttle and Supersonic transport are up there too.

I've been watch TPS for about 4 years now, and Dan & Mick have rekindled my love of guitar. I've played for years, but never really made time to practice enough or really understand what I was listening to. I am a massive nerd as well, so the obsession with gear and trying to just give yourself the equipment you need to fuel your creativity is fascinating. Their videos this year on following a custom build of an acoustic guitar, refrets on a vintage Strat, and the explanation of how a reverb pedal works by building a monster rig of individual pedals to show the signal path were fantastic. combine that with live performances, over an hour long chat with Paul Reed Smith, and shooting out vintage Marshall heads just brilliant.

GCN create so much content, but their coverage of the Zwift academy finals each year with a chance to win a pro cycling contract with world tour teams is always a highlight. Some of the challenges they do are amazing, like trying to beat the hour record on an e bike, or trying to get Strava KOM on the world's steepest climb.

Clearly a large professional organisation with big resources, but to knock out 4 or 5 videos a week, including a half hour cycling news show is fantastic.

This could so easily just be used for advertising their own products, but it's not. To see a business openly promoting their competitors products is amazing. It's all about showing that there is space for everyone. In depth product demos, conversations with other pedal builders, history lessons on where guitar tones originated. Also obviously adverts for their own new products (done with Shameless Plug audio and visual stings). Standouts this year, The guitar pedals of Jimi Hendrix, and Marshall's greatest pedals.
