Eddie Murphy discusses the "Christmas spirit" and how it is the "best time to reconnect with family and friends" ahead of the release of Candy Cane Lane.
Eddie Murphy's upcoming Christmas flick Candy Cane Lane will be released on December 1. Eddie Murphy, Reggie Hudlin, and Brian Grazer are ready to reconvene after 30 years for Candy Cane Lane, a hilarious, new Amazon original action-adventure twist on the Christmas movie genre. The video is set in El Segundo, California, near Los Angeles International Airport, and depicts an actual location that draws visitors every year to enjoy the spectacular Christmas displays. Eddie Murphy plays Chris, a man on a goal to win his neighborhood's annual Christmas home decorating contest who, unwittingly, strikes a bargain with a nefarious elf that brings the 12 Days of Christmas to life.
Tumblr media
Nothing is more important to Murphy and his character Chris over the holidays than spending time with family. "When you get older it's harder and harder to feel that Christmas spirit, but it makes it much easier when you have the little ones around," says Murphy. "Christmas is the best time to reconnect with family, friends and the people who matter most to celebrate the good times." He hopes that this film preserves the Christmas spirit alive. Murphy's character, Chris Carver, is a family man who loves Christmas so much that he names all of his children after Christmas carols. "Every year, he goes all out, and then he loses his job." "Right before Christmas, the bottom is pulled out from beneath him," Murphy adds. "He is going all out in his movie because he is on the verge of losing everything." Director Reginald Hudlin says that having the comic G.O.A.T on hand was crucial to making Candy Cane Lane the best movie could be. "This is my second time working with Eddie Murphy on a film, and there are a lot of great things that come with that." The first is, of course, that you work with Eddie Murphy, one of the most talented persons in our industry. The second reason is that everyone wants to work with Eddie Murphy, so you can find the best staff and performers to surround him with. As a result, I was able to make the film of my dreams." Candy Cane Lane, directed by Reginald Hudlin and written by Kelly Younger, will launch on Prime Video in India and 240+ countries and territories worldwide on December 1. The Christmas comedy, directed by Brian Grazer, starring Eddie Murphy, Karen Lunder, and Charisse Hewitt-Webster in crucial roles.

Dakotaverse’s Icon and Hardware Clash in New Limited Comic Series
Tumblr media
DC Comics has announced Icon vs. Hardware, a new 5-issue limited series from writers Leon Chills and Reggie Hudlin and artists Denys Cowan and Yasmin Flores Montanez. Icon vs. Hardware also serves as the official kickoff for Milestone’s “Worlds Collide” event.
“To learn more about the world outside of Dakota and prepare her for her role in running the world when he returns to Terminus, Augustus Freeman, a.k.a. Icon, sends Rocket (Raquel Ervin) to an exclusive boarding school, where she meets new friends and has her “mean girls” suspicions quickly confirmed. Meanwhile, Hardware, armed with a time machine created by inventor Benjamin Banneker, plans to go back in time to prevent The Big Bang from ever happening, with absolutely no concerns about how his actions will impact the time stream. Along the way, Hardware uncovers secrets about himself and the Metcalf family, and his actions will undoubtedly put him on a collision course with Icon in the present day.” (DC Comics)
Icon vs. Hardware #1 (of 5), featuring a main cover by Rahzzah, a variant cover by Canaan White and Chris Sotomayor, and a 1 in 25 ratio variant “homage” cover by Denys Cowan, goes on sale on February 14, 2023.

Blog 6: The Final One
I can’t believe it’s here. Not only have I reached the end of my last term as an Undergrad EVER (graduation is in 6 days!!) but this is my last blog post for my Afrofuturism class. As such, I wasn’t sure what would be most fitting to end this experiment on. Call it hope for my future outside of UCLA or an ode to the way time is often malleable in Afrofuturism, but I decided that it’s important to look forward… by also looking to the past (because honestly what even is time).
One of my final lectures was about the current state of the Afrofuturism genre and its future. But in looking at how far we’ve come, we need to acknowledge Afrofuturism’s past…. And unfortunately, there wasn’t a whole lot going on to be honest. One of the things that surprised me, is that it wasn’t until recently-ish, a few decades, that Afrofuturism artists and works began to really emerge. In the beginning, there were only a few movies and books and authors, and like, one director. When one of the pioneers of the genre, Octavia E. Butler passed, it might have even felt or looked like Afrofuturism was done and over with. But that, fortunately, didn’t happen! In fact, it really started to take off within the last few years. When Black Panther came out - and by Mainstream Marvel no less! - it set a new fire and hope that Afrofuturism could inspire and continue - and it has. Many artists (Missy Elliot, Janelle Monáe, Kenrick Lamar, Beyoncé, Alabama Shakes, Reggie Hudlin, Okorafor, Nnedi (with Wanuri Kahiu), Boots Riley, etc.) through various mediums (music, music videos, lyrics, stories, movies) have produced great works of Afrofuturistic art and it’s only getting better. Especially with the past influences to draw from (Sun-Ra, George Clinton, Samuel R. Delaney, Derrick Bell, etc.) and the new forms of technology (which can be both good and bad) to help achieve a futuristic aesthetic.
However, as discussed in one of my final lectures - the future of Afrofuturism (and I’d argue art in general) is a caution of relying solely on AI for these things. This is why, in my opinion, the WGA strike is so important in a lot of different ways. For the sake of good and soulful art - and for the care of people. Because Afrofuturism started and will continue to be a way that cautions and warns and shows people that we need to think about and invest in people that we often disregard. We as a society have to make sure we are taking care of each other and the things we care about: equality, justice, food and housing security, fair and liveable wages, healthcare, safety, etc. Parable of the Sower was set in the year 2024 - and we are almost there. And while I don’t think that it will be exactly like Lauren’s world, I do think that we are moving closer and closer to it. Closer and closer in having to fight for the right to live (I think most of us are actually there - just not in the extreme ways in Parable), closer and closer to constant violence and a need for hypervigilance, closer and closer to new and legal (if not completely unethical) ways for modern day slavery.
But we can also get closer and closer to helping others and finding our own place to plant our own seeds. We can get closer and closer to helping others plant their seeds. And soon, if we work together, and take care of each other, and help and watch out for each other, and make sure we’re paying attention and fighting for the things that we care about, all the seeds that we were able to plant - of community, and love, and hope - will grow. And I want to make sure I’m part of that harvest.

Blog post #3
Avner Shamtoub
In 1992, Derrick Bell wrote a short story called “Space Traders.” 2 years later, it was adapted for television by Reggie Hudlin. The adaptation is exceptional as it combines themes relating to race and African Americans while also having a plot that represents Afrofuturism. The film’s plot begins in the year 2000, when aliens come to Earth. These aliens offer the United States gold and technological advances in exchange for something interesting. The aliens want the Africans Americans in the states in exchange. What makes the film interesting is how much the government contemplates taking this deal, simply because of their racist motives. The white people believe that by doing this trade, all of the issues that the society deals with will be solved. The adaptation ends in a shocking, but not so shocking manner. The whites think the benefit of making this trade does not outweigh any negatives, and it is approved by 70% of people. The film ends with the African Americans stripped of their clothing and put in chains sent to the ships of the Aliens.
This adaptation is powerful in multiple ways. Of course, the aspect of racism is a main theme in this adaptation. There are two theories the are present in this adaptation. The first is the Critical Race Theory. This theory sees how laws that promote a fair society in actuality promote more inequality. A second theory is the Interest Convergence Theory. This theory explains that the whites only support minorities if it is in their interest as well. It is clear this second theory is completely abandoned in this adaptation. The whites completely dehumanize the African Americans and do not give any empathy towards them. They see them as property and make a trade for materialistic items, in exchange for the lives of real human beings. The film is also acting as a metaphor. Clearly, the aliens that come to Earth are slave traders from the past. In the past, African Americans were traded to other nations in exchange for goods, as if they were “goods” themselves and were not human and did not have a soul. The adaptation also had an aspect of advancing Afrofuturism. It was created in 1992, but it spoke upon ideas that are far in the future. It is funny to see that people though aliens would be on Earth in the year 2000, and we are not in year 2023 with not much contact with extraterrestrials.
Overall this short story and its adaptation was important for African American Afrofuturism.
