Q2: (Dpr ian 🐺 Question) When making an MV do you map out (the MV) in the middle of making the song? Or do you complete the song and then plan (the MV)?
Dpr live 🦊: Honestly I do it case by case
Dpr ian 🐺: For example. In the case of So Beautiful (actually an image/picture, rather than a video) I visualized it scene by scene. Since I really like imagining in that scene what time it is, what colors are there, what kind of character there is, and what’s their story. I picture that image in my mind. So Beautiful was something (getting) drenched by the rain while it rained inside the house…in that darkness you can imagine something beautiful…from there the song came out. Since I liked imagining from the time I was young…actually, i don’t think it’s possible for me to say the song or the MV comes first…maybe i’ll say the imagining comes first…?
Dpr cream 🍦: anyway, he’s a genius. This guy is crazy… LOL

(I’ll give you) the best years
part II (masterlist)
Hello hello, sorry it took a while, but here is part 2 and part 3 is already in the works (so is part 4 🙈). I’d love to hear your thoughts, ideas, what you’ll like to see in the future and whatever else is on your minds!
Once again huge thank you to Anna @silverrank for making sure my writing actually makes sense and isn’t complete gibberish. And a big thank you to @booksncoffee for this beautiful banner.
Enjoy!
PART II
September 2023
There was no other word to describe the first days of being married but bliss. Absolute pure bliss. And it wasn’t even because of the stunning scenery of Maui, their luxury little beach house and beautiful turquoise water of the ocean. It was the bliss of being able to spend every minute with the person you were madly in love with, with no worries occupying your mind, nowhere to go and nothing to do, but enjoy each other and celebrate the official new chapter of your lives. In a way, the wedding didn’t change all that much for Lucy and Niall; they already lived together and they had been sure of their relationship being the one for a while now. But somehow it did change their mindsets a bit. They always thought about their future together, but now it was a given, there were no questions, no hesitation when making plans or talking about growing old.
A part of Lucy had used to think of marriage as a piece of paper, and in some cases it probably was like that, but right now she saw it as a bigger union. Like she and Niall were a proper team now. They were a family, after all.
Lucy was never a person who could do nothing. She was used to some kind of practice usually two times a day, meeting with people, doing meal prep, analysing her games and thinking about strategy or possible improvements. However, she was quite surprised to find herself truly enjoying the honeymoon, even though as of now it consisted of spending most of their time in bed (or other places in the house), reading books on the patio, swimming or playing board games in between. There were worse things to preoccupy her time with than enjoying the body of Niall Horan and letting him adore hers.
“I have no idea how I’ll be able to play in a few days.” Lucy sighed between licks of her ice lolly. A lot of the places the tennis tour took place are quite hot, so the weather shouldn’t bother her too much, but she was never actually a big fan of heat. The ten days in Maui were just the start of their honeymoon, which had to be split in two, because she qualified for the WTA finals, where only eight best players of that year had the opportunity to compete. It was the second year she was lucky enough to be a part of that event and she was actually ready to withdraw, but Niall didn’t want her to (truth be told, she did have a chance of ending the year as number one player). So they were coming back to London for a week of training, which she’ll definitely need after not caring about her food or working out (although that might be debatable, as they did work up quite a sweat most of the times), then playing a tournament in Luxembourg to get back into the swing of things before going to China to prepare and compete in the finals. After that however, they would embark on the second part of their marriage celebrations, travelling to Italy and planning a road trip through Spain, Portugal and maybe some other European cities. Also, Niall was joining her on all of her travels in between, so she’d be working, but they’d still be together.
“Is this work talk I’m hearing during our honeymoon?” he asked tilting his head to look at her through the sunglasses perched on his nose. There was a laughing undertone in his voice, because they jokingly made a bet while on the plane who would be the first to mention work. But they always had this understanding about each other’s job, because it was extraordinary and it wasn’t just work, it was passion and a lifestyle. Even though their jobs were very different, they bonded over that from the start.
Lucy reached out and swatted his arm. She was so sure he’ll be the one losing a bet, seeing how excited he always was to get back to writing after touring, that she forgot to watch herself. And Lucy really didn’t like losing.
“Can’t wait for tonight.” Niall smirked, putting his hands behind his head and stretching his body on the lounger. At least the forfeit wasn’t that bad, but it did make Lucy blush.
“Weren’t we supposed to finally go out for dinner tonight?” she asked. They only left their little bubble once, for a little boat trip.
Niall hummed in thought. “We do have a reservation. Will you be okay with settling the bet tomorrow, then?”
Lucy met his eyes and licked her ice lolly quite suggestively, which made him pull his bottom lip between his teeth, before she spoke. “Yeah, I guess that could be arranged.”
Niall held her gaze for a minute before throwing his head back with a groan. His wife was the devil, he was sure about that. She just laughed and finished eating before getting up. She stopped by his lounger, bending down, giving her husband quite a view of her chest and planting a sweet kiss on his lips, her tongue tasting fruity from her lolly. “I’m gonna shower and start getting ready, have to actually dress up for a change”.
~~~~
“There’s actually something I need your opinion on.” Lucy said when there was a slight lull in their conversation after they started eating. They were sitting on the balcony of the restaurant, the vast ocean spread below them and the setting sun creating a beautiful hue. Niall was chewing on his food, so he gestured for her to go on. “Well, I’ve been considering keeping playing under my maiden name. And I want to know if you’d be okay with that.”
A little frown took over his face, but he spoke as soon as he could, shrugging a little. “Yeah, of course.”
“Really?” she asked surprised, not because he was fine with it, but because it seemed like he just shrugged it off, while she’d been turning it over in her head for weeks. “Just like that?”
Niall put down his cutlery and looked at the woman in front of him with a small smile. “Why, were you scared to talk to me about this?”
Lucy shook her head forcefully. “No, I’m never scared to tell you things. But sometimes I am anxious, because I don’t want to hurt you. And I just remember how big your smile was when I said I wanted to take your name.”
He sighed and reached for her hand that was resting on the table, intertwining their fingers. “You know I love the fact that you wanted to share a name with me, not even hyphenate it. That made me feel really proud and worthy. But it’s your career and you have so many achievements under your name already, so I understand why you’d want to continue building that. And.. well.. I kinda wanted to suggest it, but I also didn’t want you to think I’m against you using my name or something. Its your decision and you have my full support either way,” he chuckled before adding, “but what else is new?”
She looked at him with gratitude, constantly wondering what exactly had she done to deserve such an amazing, supporting man loving her as much as Niall did. “Thank you, baby.”
“No need to thank me, silly. I was so excited that you wanted to take my name, but I would never force it on you, like, I would understand if you wanted to stay with yours, not just for tennis.” In a way it meant more to him that she was only thinking about it now, having already changed her name to his, just that knowledge that she simply wanted to do it, not even considering what it meant for her career or her future legacy.
“I appreciate that.” Some part of her actually wanted to have his name everywhere, be his wife in all aspects of her identity. However, the more rational part of her knew it was best for her, career wise. She hadn’t figured it all out yet, didn’t know what it meant for her future business moves, after she was done playing. But she knew one thing - that they’d cross that bridge together when the time came. “But I always wanted to have the same one with my husband. I did consider hyphenating it, but it’s just not for me. If we’re gonna do it, let’s do it right, yeah?”
“Go big or go home, love,” said Niall, his glass clinking against hers in toast.
She took a sip before looking at him with a devilish glint in her eyes. “Now, what do you say, should we skip dessert and settle that bet tonight instead?”
The words made him almost choke on his beer. “You’re something else, Lulu Horan.”
November 2023
Coming back to training was never as brutal as this. It wasn’t just Lucy’s lack of her usual regime while in Maui, it was lying on the beach next to her husband one day and sweating her ass off in the gym in London two days later. Coming back to reality was hard and part of her was a bit mad they decided to divide their honeymoon. She didn’t want to get out of their lovely bubble.
Lucy thought that during her training week in the city, Niall would use the opportunity to go to the studio and start writing again, usually after the tour he was itching to make new music. But to her surprise, none of that happened. He met with some mates, came along to a few of her trainings or waited at home with dinner ready. If he was going out, it seemed like he made sure to be back by the time she got home. It was nice; Lucy wasn’t going to complain about that, but it did make her worry a bit, because it was out of character.
She wasn’t about to blow it out of proportion, but she did ask him about it.
“Aren’t you excited to get back to the studio? I thought you’d jump at the opportunity this week,” she mentioned one night, when they were in the kitchen cleaning up after dinner.
“Um.. not really, no.” Niall shook his head while rinsing out dishes and handing them to Lucy to load them into the dishwasher.
“Is there a reason why?” she asked, looking at him with furrowed brows and pausing her actions for a second to gauge his reaction.
“Well, I mean…” He didn’t seem bothered by the questions, just a little confused, like he was trying to make sense of his own thoughts before sharing them. “I have ideas, but I’m not sure if I want to jump back in. I’m quite enjoying my honeymoon off time right now.”
He shrugged his shoulders and finally lifted his head to her face. She was looking at him, trying to get a read on his feelings, like she was searching for a sign that everything really was okay.
“Is that alright with you?” Niall asked with the slightest hesitation.
“Of course,” she said, giving him an encouraging smile. “Whatever makes you happy, baby.”
And that was the end of it. Niall flew to Luxembourg with her, coming along to most of her training on court and sometimes working on his own body alongside her in the gym, watching tv or reading books in the hotel rooms and cheering her on during her matches. They also came to China together and Lucy was more than happy to have her husband there, it was a really nice tournament, a special event, but it was also stressful, especially with the pressure to perform as well as possible and fight for the year-end number one spot. There were no easy matches and Niall’s presence and humour were perfect relaxers.
“Are we going out for dinner tonight?” asked Niall when she joined him in their hotel room after taking a cooling bath to recover her tired muscles. Lucy won her second game of the tournament, pretty much bagging herself a spot in the semi-finals, so a little celebratory dinner was more than deserved. (Even though they’d been going out to dinner every night since they got to Shenzhen).
“Yeah, I think so. Jordan was talking about this restaurant that’s supposed to be a mind blowing experience.” Lucy said, referencing her fitness trainer. She was busy unpacking her bag from the match, which made her miss Niall’s expression falling, his brows drawing together in a frown.
“Oh. I didn’t realise they were all going with us. Again.” Niall’s unamused tone made her look up instantly.
“What do you mean?” she asked, confused. Niall was the most friendly person she knew, he never had a problem with being around people, and he got along pretty well with her team. It wasn’t unusual, when playing tournaments, especially the big ones; they had been going out to dinner together as a little break from work, Niall had never complained about it during his visits, always more than happy to tag along, even joking that it made him feel like part of the winning team.
“Well, it is our honeymoon still, kinda.” His eyes were challenging, not leaving hers for even a second, but his next words were gentler, indicating he wasn’t looking for a fight, just wanted her to see his point. “We’ve been surrounded by your coach, trainer, physio, psychologist and manager for the past two weeks. I know you’re basically working right now and it’s your team, I do like them as well, but I’d like to have dinner with just my wife sometimes. Is it that wrong?”
She shook her head, her heart melting right away, seeing his reasons and thinking about any possible signs she might have missed, making a mental note to consider it in the future. “I’m sorry, you know I suck at saying no to people. Especially the ones I like.”
“And it’s your routine, it’s what you do, I know, but I’d like to still celebrate us a bit, you know?” His voice was still a little desperate, but he didn’t seem as frustrated anymore.
“I’d like that too. Thank you for bringing that to my attention, baby. I’m gonna text everyone, let them know we’re doing our own thing tonight.”
She went to grab her charging phone right away. As she was about to walk back to her bag after sending a message, Niall grabbed her by the hand and pulled her to stand between his legs, while he sat on the  bed, his hands resting at the bottom of her waist.
He looked up at her and when she leaned down for a kiss, he went for her neck instead, then whispering in her ear, “You’re gonna let me blow your mind tonight, then? Don’t need any fancy restaurant to do that, hm?”
~~~~
Italy was the perfect place to drown your sorrows. That’s what Niall said when they were leaving China, even after Lucy assured him there weren’t really any sorrows to be buried. Sure, she didn’t finish the year at the top of the ranking, losing in the semi finals, but she did hold the number two spot and that was more than enough. Plus she was more than happy to be going back on their honeymoon and enjoying the world with no plan or pressure, just the two of them, before starting her pre-season training in a few weeks.
They flew down to Rome. Both of them had been in the city numerous times before, Niall for tours and Lucy for a tournament, but now they finally had the time to actually explore, see all the main attractions, as well as some more hidden gems. Then they took the train to Florence, which was the city Lucy was most excited about, having seen all the beautiful pictures and talking to some friends who had visited in the past.
Even though they both had seen a lot of places because of their respective jobs, there was something entirely special in travelling like that, together, with no other intent but exploring and enjoying the time and place. Both of them sometimes found it hard to disconnect, let go of stress and worry, not think about what needs to be done soon, what work awaits them. But walking around Florence, basking in the sun which was a nice surprise as it was the beginning of November, holding hands and admiring the beautiful city, they were both simply calm and happy, not a worry in sight.
“Shit, Niall, I’m dripping.” Lucy interrupted the calm with an exclamation, stopping in her tracks.
“Jesus, Lulu, we just left the church not even ten minutes ago, hold your horses, woman.” Niall had the smuggiest grin on his face and didn’t even move to hand her a tissue, her melted ice cream dripping down her hand.
She looked at him very bemused while he gave her an almost childlike grin, before finally digging through his backpack to help her.
“You are so not funny,” Lucy said, taking a tissue from him, a grumpy expression on her face.
“Sorry, I’m pretty sure there is a ‘no returns’ policy on husbands, so you’re stuck with me forever now.” He laughed putting his arm around her waist and squeezing her tightly against his side, before planting a kiss on her cheek.
Lucy kept a snarl on her face for a few seconds more, before letting a smile overcome her features and searching for his lips, letting him know she actually appreciated his ability to joke at everything, his easygoing attitude, which was truly irritating at times when they started dating, but she grew to not only love it, but admire it a bit.
~~
In Milan they decided to rent a car and travel through France to Spain and then Portugal, where they would end their trip. The road tripping took Lucy back in time in a way, because she remembered many travels with her parents to different tennis tournaments, when she was a kid. However, travelling with Niall was immensely better. She barely ever drove, so he did most of it, only switching for an hour or so, when he was really tired, even though they didn’t pull super long distances, making pit stops in smaller places for a night or two. She really enjoyed watching Niall drive though, there was something so sexy about his confidence, one hand on the wheel, while the other usually rested on her thigh or was intertwined with hers, his head bobbing along to the music and singing to most songs, a carefree smile constant on his lips. There was no better word to describe her feelings than content. Just fully content.
“We should travel like this more often,” she said, when he looked at her with an arched brow, after she had been quiet for a while.
His face lit up and he raised their joined hands to press a soft kiss to hers.
“You enjoying yourself, then?”
She hummed happily. “Mmm, very much. First class flights and fancy hotels are always nice, but this is just special, I don’t know, like we’re actually seeing the world together. Maybe it’s because we fly around so much, I’m quite used to it. While I haven’t been on a road trip since I was around fifteen, probably.”
“Yeah, it’s nicely different. And it feels more chilled, I think. Like, if we want to stop, we stop. If we want to see something, we go there. There’s no rush. I’m really liking it too.” He agreed, taking his eyes off the road for a second to offer her a big smile.
“Let’s do this at least once a year,” she proposed. “Maybe not for two weeks, or whatever, it can be a smaller trip, but I’d quite like to make it our thing.”
“Deal,” he said, letting go of her hand just to wrap his pinky around hers. “Although I reckon you’re gonna regret those words once we have kids.”
Somewhere along their relationship, having kids stopped being an ‘if’ and became a ‘when’. They didn’t even talk about it, not really, but it was a natural progression none of them minded. Whenever Lucy heard it, it made her smile at her partner. It was almost like they subconsciously knew they both wanted it, their souls reading each other and wanting the same thing.
~~
After travelling through France and most of Spain, they decided to rent a small house near the coast and rest for a few days. They were enjoying a glass of wine (well, beer for Niall) after dinner on the patio while playing cards. Both of them were snuggled in cozy sweaters (Lucy was wearing her favourite of Niall’s), but the air was so nice, although chilly, they didn’t want to go inside.
“Why don’t we have, like, a holiday house somewhere?” Niall asked after losing yet another game. Lucy was always better at games that required any type of strategic thinking, yet he was still grumpy after losing too many times.
She shrugged while picking up the cards to shuffle them for another round. “I actually don’t know. Properties are usually a good investment. We should look around.” She shrugged while picking up the cards to shuffle them for another round.
“We could spend a month in Spain or wherever,” he suggested looking around, as if trying to picture their future there.
“That sounds nice. But between that and our yearly road trips, I doubt we’d actually have enough time to enjoy it all.”
“Mmm, that’s true,” he hummed, thinking about it all. “But I’d really like a house in Ireland.”
“Why am I not surprised?” She let out a small laugh. Niall was nothing if not patriotic, always speaking about his country with a special spark in his eyes.
“Would you not?” He sounded almost offended, like it was an attack on his person. “I need to show you more of the country, actually. We should take some road trips there.”
“Well, it depends,” she said picking up her wine glass and taking a sip. “I think it’d be nice as a cottage, a get away house, but I don’t think I’d want to live there, not yet at least, maybe once we’re old or something.”
He was silent for a minute, sorting through his own thoughts and feelings. “Well, I always thought I’d move back one day. But you’re right, it wouldn’t be practical to live there now, not with our jobs and plans. You’re not crossing it out though, right? We’ll think about it in a few years?”
“Would you ask for a divorce if I said no?” she teased.
“Oh yeah, it’s a deal breaker for me.” Niall joined with the same joking manner, although his tone and face was serious. “We should have talked about it before, huh?”
“As long as we’d both be able to do the job we’d want to do while living there, I’m pretty open to it,” she said seriously. They’d both learned a long time ago that home was wherever they were together, the actual place didn’t matter that much.
He smiled brightly, leaning over the table between them to give her a happy kiss. “What about now, though? Would it be okay if we looked around? Got a little cottage in the middle of nowhere or something?”
She held to his neck to give him one more kiss before letting go and settling back in her seat. They only had this much space between them, so Niall would look into her cards, but maybe it was time to end the game. “Yeah, of course. That’d be nice, actually, our little escape.”
With both of their lifestyles being so hectic, they probably wouldn’t have too much time to actually spend there, but Ireland was close enough for a quick weekend getaway trip. She liked that perspective. Or both of them flying down from wherever they were and meeting there for a couple of days together, away from the noisy world. Just them and their little bubble. It sounded like heaven. This whole honeymoon made both of them wonder how were they supposed to go back on their separate travels soon, after spending so much time by each other’s side.
They had those bittersweet moments, when they were still together, but already missing the other person, even before they were gone. They’d catch the other looking a bit distant, a sad glint in their eyes and just know, making sure to squeeze the other person’s hand or give a specially tight hug or a reassuring kiss.
Even though none of them said anything, they both wondered how long will their life look like that, constantly apart, missing each other and living from one visit to the other. But in the end, there was never any doubt in their minds whether it was worth it. And that’s all that truly mattered.

August 3rd
Today, we did a full day tour of the Cape Peninsula! We started in Cape Town, and followed the route shown below, recognizable by its black and white stripes. This was called the Cape Point Route. We followed it down the western coast on the left side to Cape Point, and then followed it up the eastern coast on the right side back to Cape Town.
Tumblr media
Our guide was a man named Johann. On the way down to Cape Point, Johann told us different historical stories about Cape Town and then the other places we passed. For example, he told us how some of the main roads came to be called what they are (e.g. Adderly Road) and the mystery of why there are bridges that just end in mid-air in Cape Town.
Our first stop was Camp’s Bay, where we disembarked for a photo-op and views of the peaks above the city, known as the 12 Apostles. They are named the 12 Apostles because a settler believed that they were looking down on him and protecting them. Johann advised us not to count the peaks, because it’s very arbitrary and you can come up with 12 +/- 5 peaks, depending on what you choose to count as a peak.

Our next stop was Hout’s Bay, also known as “The Republic of Hout’s Bay”. It is called this because during the Apartheid regime, Hout’s Bay didn’t agree with the oppressive laws, so they decided to become a self-proclaimed anti-Apartheid nation. This was in no way official, but it was the principle that mattered. They even set up entrance gates at the ‘border’ and created passports for people who lived there and wanted them. The view of Cape Town from Hout’s Bay was beautiful and there were some local artists set up there as well.

Finally we reached the Cape Point Nature Reserve, which is the area we drove through to get to Cape Point. There are many wild animals that live there, such as Zebra and Ostrich, but the area is so vast that seeing them from the road is extremely unlikely. We got lucky and saw some baboons walking along the side of the road as we drove by!
After driving through this for a while, we finally reached Cape Point. We all walked about 15 minutes up to the lighthouse where the view was the best. Then Johann took us on a walk/hike from Cape Point to the Cape of Good Hope. It was a super beautiful walk and we got to go to a small beach along the way; many of us waded in the water, which those from California thought was freezing and those from Boston thought was fine. The Cape of Good Hope is not the southernmost point in Africa, nor is it the westernmost point. However, it is the southwesternmost point of Africa.

After this we went to Simon’s Town where we saw the African Penguin Colony! They were adorable and small. African penguins can’t fly but they can swim at super fast speeds by making flying motions underwater.

After this we drove back to the hotel and got ready for a once in a lifetime experience: a talk from Christo Brand, Nelson Mandela’s prison warden for many years. We heard a fascinating speech from him and got to do a Q&A session as well. It was perfectly timed after our visit to Robben Island yesterday. Then he had copies of his book available for us which he kindly signed.

Q: 19 year old me?
Dpr live 🦊: If I think about when I was 19…I came to Korea and and was working hard to acclimate. First my qualification exam(?). Since I didn’t go to high school in Korea, I wasn’t very good at Korean. My mom worried I’d be an outcast if I went to school, so I didn’t go. I was really fortunate. And going to a foreign school was really expensive and we didn’t have a lot of money. So I took the exam…and from then on my self-esteem was very very very—as you can imagine I was someone with no self-esteem. Then I actually didn’t have anything I wanted to do and it was a time when I didn’t have any confidence to do anything. But I think I started dreaming when I was 19. I was the only son, I had to become the pillar (of the family). I had to live my life with meaning and a sense of achievement/accomplishment. What do I really do? What should I really do? Because everyone goes to college. I think that’s when I started asking myself those questions sincerely. How to live

Over the course of her 66-year-reign, Queen Elizabeth has seen more than a few regime changes in American politics. In total, she's spent time with 12 out of the last 13 sitting U.S. presidents. (Somehow, Lyndon Johnson missed the cut.) The queen traveled to Washington, DC for the first time to meet President Harry Truman in 1951 when she was still a princess, and has also hosted Trump at Windsor Castle when he visited England in 2018. Since 1951, the year before she ascended to the throne, the Queen has met with 12 US presidents and helped facilitate the US and UK's diplomatic relations.The queen, who ascended to the throne in 1952 and is currently the world's longest-reigning monarch, has played a major role in facilitating the US and UK's "special" diplomatic relationship and has met with 12  American presidents at places including Buckingham Palace, the White House, and even a Baltimore Orioles game.President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump last visited with the royals from June 3-5, 2019 on a special state visit to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day.  They attended several distinctly British meet-and-greet opportunities, including tea with heir Prince Charles, a banquet at Buckingham Palace, a tour of Westminster Abbey, and a D-Day anniversary ceremony, most of which was alongside royalty. . NCERT Class 12 Macro Economics Chapter 9 Foreign Exchange Rate
NCERT Class 12 Micro Economics Solutions
Chapter 9 Foreign Exchange Rate
NCERT TEXTBOOK QUESTIONS SOLVED :
Question 1. How is exchange rate determined under a flexible exchange rate regime? [6 Marks] Or How is foreign exchange rate determined? Explain with diagram. Or [AI 2004; CBSE 06 q How is exchange rate determined in a foreign exchange market? Explain.[AI 2013 (Set 1)]
Answer: Exchange rate in a free exchange market is determined at a point, where demand for foreign exchange is equal to the supply of foreign exchange.
Let us assume that there are two countries – India and U.S.A – and the exchange rate of their currencies i.e., rupee and dollar is to be determined.
Presently, there is floating or flexible exchange regime in both India and U.S.A. Therefore, the value of currency of each country in terms of the other currency depends upon the demand for and supply of their currencies.
In the above diagram, the price on the vertical axis is stated in terms of domestic currency (that is, how many rupees for one US dollar). The horizontal axis measures the quantity demanded or supplied.
In the above diagram, the demand curve [D$] is downward sloping. This means that less foreign exchange is demanded as the exchange rate increases. This is due to the fact that the rise in price of foreign exchange increases the rupee cost of foreign goods, which make them more expensive. As a result, imports decline. Thus, the demand for foreign exchange also decreases.
The supply curve [S$] is upward sloping which means that supply of foreign exchange increases as the exchange rate increases. This makes home country’s goods become cheaper to foreigners since rupee is depreciating in value. The demand for our exports should therefore increase as the exchange rate increases. The increased demand for our exports translates into greater supply of foreign exchange. Thus, the supply of foreign exchange increases as the exchange rate increases.
Tumblr media
The intersection of the supply and demand curves determine equilibrium exchange rate (OP$) and equilibrium quantity [OQ$] of foreign currency i.e., US [$]. Question 2. Differentiate between devaluation and depreciation. [3 Marks]
Answer:
Tumblr media
Question 3. Are the concepts of demand for domestic goods and domestic demand for goods the same? [3 Marks]
Answer: Demand for domestic goods and domestic demand for goods are two different concepts. Demand for domestic goods is a demand for goods made by both domestic and foreign countries. Domestic demand for goods is a demand for goods by our own country for goods ..which may be produced in foreign countries. Question 4. Would the central bank need tointervene in a managed floating system? Explain why? [3 Marks]
Answer: In a managed floating system a central bank of a country has freedom to bring change in the exchange rate within certain limits.
A country is allowed after information to the IMF to bring a certain limited amount of change in the rate of exchange.
A central bank cannot bring change in its exchange rate by more than 10%. For it, permission of IMF is necessary.

Answer: (b) Short Answer Type Questions (3-4 Marks) Question 1. State four sources of demand of foreign exchange.[CBSE 2004, 05, 05C, 07; A 05, 10] Or Give three reasons why people desire to have foreign exchange. Or [CBSE 2005] What are the sources of demand for foreign exchange?
Answer: The demand (or outflow) of foreign exchange comes from the people who need it to make payments in foreign currencies. It is demanded by the domestic residents for the following reasons:
Imports of Goods and Services:When India import goods and services, foreign exchange is demanded to make the payment for imports of goods and services.
Tourism: Foreign exchange is demanded to meet expenditure incurred in foreign tours. Unilateral Transfers sent abroad: Foreign exchange is required for making unilateral transfers like sending gifts to other countries.
Purchase of assets in foreign countries: It is demanded to make payment for purchase of assets, like land, shares, bonds, etc. in foreign countries. Question 2. What are the functions of a foreign exchange market?
Answer: Transfer Function: Transfer function refers to transferring of purchasing power among countries.
Credit Function: It implies provision of credit in terms of foreign exchange for the export and import of goods and services across different countries of the world.
Hedging Function: Hedging function pertains to protecting against foreign exchange risks. Where Hedging is an activity which is designed to minimize the risk of loss. Question 3. Why does demand for foreign exchange rise when its price falls? Or [AI 2006, 08, 10] What are the reasons for ‘Rise in Demand’ for Foreign Currency?
Answer: The demand for foreign currency rises in the following situations: When price of a foreign currency falls, imports from that, foreign, country become cheaper. So, imports increase and hence, the demand for foreign currency rises.
For example, if price of 1 US dollar falls from Rs 60 to T 55, then imports from The USA will increase as American goods will become relatively cheaper. It will raise the demand for US dollar.
When a foreign currency becomes cheaper in terms of the domestic currency, it promotes tourism to that country. As a result, demand for foreign currency rises.
When price of a foreign currency falls, its demand rises as more people want to make gains from speculative activities. Question 4. When price of a foreign currency rises, its demand falls’. Explain why? Or [CBSE 2011] Explain relation between foreign exchange rate and demand for it. Or [CBSE 2004q Why demand curve of foreign exchange is downward sloping?
Tumblr media
Answer: Demand curve of foreign exchange slopes downwards due to inverse relationship between demand for foreign exchange and foreign exchange rate.
In figure, demand for foreign exchange (US dollar) and rate of foreign exchange are shown on the horizontal axis and vertical axis respectively.
The demand curve [US$] is downward sloping. It means that less foreign exchange is demanded as the exchange rate increases.
This is due to the fact that rise in the price of foreign exchange increases the rupee cost of foreign goods, which make them more expensive. As a result, imports decline. Thus, the demand for foreign exchange also decreases. Question 5. State four sources of supply of foreign exchange.[CBSE 2004, 05, 05C, 07, 10; AI 05] Or What are the sources for supply of foreign exchange?
Answer: The supply (inflow) of foreign exchange comes from the people who receive it due to the following reasons.
Exports of goods and services: Supply of foreign exchange comes through exports of goods and services.
Foreign investment: The amount, which foreigners invest in their home country, increases the supply of foreign exchange.
Remittances (unilateral transfers) from abroad: Supply of foreign exchange increases in the form of gifts and other remittances from abroad.
Speculation: Supply of foreign exchange comes from those who want to speculate on the value of foreign exchange. Question 6. What are the reasons of ‘rise in supply’ of foreign currency? Or Why does a rise in foreign exchange rate cause a rise in foreign exchange supply? [CBSE 2006, 08] Or When exchange rate of a foreign currency rises, its supply also rises. How? Explain. [CBSE 2008]
Answer: The supply of foreign currency rises in the following situations: When price of a foreign currency rises, domestic goods become relatively cheaper. It induces the foreign country to increase their imports from the domestic country. As a result, supply of foreign currency rises. For example, if price of 1 US dollar rises from Rs 60 to Rs 65, then exports to USA will increase as Indian goods will become relatively cheaper. It will raise the supply of US dollars.
When price of a foreign currency rises,foreign direct investment (FDI) from rest of the world increases, which will increase the supply for foreign exchange.
When price of a foreign currency rises, also supply of foreign currency rises as people want to make gains from speculative activities. Question 7. Why supply curve of foreign exchange is upward sloping?
Tumblr media
Answer: Supply curve of foreign exchange slopes upwards due to positive relationship between supply for foreign exchange and foreign exchange rate, which means that supply of foreign exchange increases as the exchange rate increases.
This makes home country’s goods become cheaper to foreigners since rupee is depreciating in value. The demand for our exports should therefore increase as the exchange rate increases.
The increased demand for our exports will translate into greater supply of foreign exchange. Thus, the supply of foreign exchange increases as the exchange rate increases. Question 8. Explain the effect of depreciation of domestic currency on exports. [A7 2013 (Set I), Sample Paper 2013]
Answer: Depreciation of domestic currency means a fall in the price of domestic currency (say, rupee) in terms of a foreign currency (say, $). It means, with the same amount of dollars, more goods can be purchased from India, i.e., exports to USA will increase as they will become relatively cheaper. Question 9. Explain the effect of appreciation of domestic currency on imports. [CBSE 2013 (Set I), Sample Paper 2013)]
Answer: Appreciation of domestic currency means a rise in the price of domestic currency (say, rupee) in terms of a foreign currency (say, $). Now, one rupee can be exchanged for more $, i.e., with the same amount of money, more goods can be purchased from the USA. It leads to increase in imports from the USA as American goods will become relatively cheaper. Question 10. What are the merits of fixed exchange rate system? [CBSE 2009]
Answer: Stability: It ensures stability, in the international money market/ exchange market. Day to day fluctuations are avoided. It helps formulation of long term economic policies, particularly relating to exports and imports.

In other words, it refers to a system in which foreign exchange is determined by free market forces (demand and supply forces), which can be influenced by the invention of the central bank in foreign exchange market.
Under this system, also called Dirty floating, central banks intervene to buy or sell foreign currencies in an attempt to stabilise exchange rate movements in case of extreme appreciation or depreciation. IV. True Or False Are the following statements true or false? Give reasons.
Question 1. An increase in demand for imported goods raises the supply for foreign exchange.
Answer: False. Supply of foreign exchange will decrease in order to make the payment for imported goods. Question 2. Depreciation of Indian rupees will occur when Rs. 55 have to be paid to exchange one US $ instead of present rate of Rs. 50/$.

How the Coronavirus Will Change Travel
Tumblr media
Posted: 03/31/20 | March 21st, 2020
On a breezy fall morning, I was walking home from my university’s humanities department after trying to get out of my Spanish language requirement to no avail. On the way, I ran into one of my roommates. He mentioned he had heard that a small plane had crashed into the World Trade Center.
By the time I got home and turned on the TV, both towers were on fire and it was clear this was much more than a small plane gone off course.
In the days and weeks following September 11th, the world changed. Even to my young self, I could feel in my bones that nothing would ever be the same again. There was a pre-9/11 world and we were now forever in a post-9/11 world.
While the later 2008 financial crisis changed the economy and our views on money, 9/11 seemed to change who we fundamentally were as people. It created a shift in thinking and our sense of self. It changed how we Americans viewed the world. There was a “lost innocence.”
As the Coronavirus has rapidly unfolded in the last month, I feel that way again, except this time on a global scale. There was a pre-Coronavirus world and now we will forever be in a post-Coronavirus world.
From how we work, travel, view government, money, and conduct our day-to-day lives, everything is going to be different. And the longer the crisis lasts, the more different it will be. I can’t say just how yet (I’m a bad futurist) but, in my gut, I know change is coming.
But let’s talk about something I do know a bit about: the travel industry.
How is this going to change travel?
The travel industry relies on human movement to function. And, with countrywide lockdowns and most major airlines ceasing operations, no one is moving right now.
Overnight, an industry that employs 10% of the world has come to a near-complete stop.
This is worse than a recession. Because, even in a recession, some people still traveling.
Now no one is moving. The industry is in stasis.
And no one knows how long this is going to last.
Hubei province, the site of the outbreak in China, was in lockdown for over two months. Hong Kong and Singapore, reeling from a recent spike in infections, have relocked down their cities.
And I think that the slow pace of such measures in many countries means most of the world will be in lockdown until May if not early June. Too many people are behind the curve and it will take longer to keep the virus under control than most people think.
So what does this mean for the industry I’ve spent the last twelve years in?
As a whole, I think we’re looking at a drastically smaller travel industry for the foreseeable future. WTTC states that they expect 75 million job loses (at a rate of up to 1 million jobs lost per day).
And it will take years for the industry – and the jobs – to return to pre-Coronavirus levels.
For starters, I don’t think many magazines and online publications will make it through. The 2008 financial crisis shuttered the doors of a lot of publications and those around today live off advertising, brand deals, and events. Ad rates are plummeting as traffic plummets and most brand deals are on hold for now.
With publications furloughing employees, giving pay cuts, and seeing lost revenue that will never come back, if this goes on longer, I think you’ll see around 25% of publications go under. I know four that closed last week. More will come. And those that survive will be smaller and be able to hire few writers.
Additionally, a lot of creators, YouTubers, freelance writers, and bloggers rely on brand partnerships for revenue. The freelance writing market is not a land of riches and, with the majority of writers and online content creators living on thin margins and paycheck to paycheck, the prospect of months of zero income is going to drive people out of the industry. I know a few already looking for the exit. I think 30-40% of people might end up leaving if the industry remains frozen to June.
Moreover, I think many hostels, travel start-ups, and small tour operators will go under too. Most small businesses operate with the tiniest of margins and don’t have a lot of liquidity. They keep enough cash on hand to get by without income for just a few weeks. A sustained shock to their business like this, even with government assistance, is going to simply bankrupt companies. They have too much overhead and costs to sustain them. Many will fold and, when you travel again, you will see fewer hostels, food and walking tour companies, and small tour operators.
When this is all over, I expect it to take years for the travel industry to recover. People will slowly start booking travel again but, like the 2008 crisis, it is going to leave many unemployed and, when you don’t have a job, travel is not a priority. It is luxury people will put off.
I think as the world opens up around the end of May/early June (provided there’s no second spike in infections), people will begin to start booking travel again for later in the summer. Business travel will pick up first but I think most of the tourism you’ll see initially will be local. People will travel around their region before they start taking big international trips again.
First, because it’s cheaper. This pandemic is going to cause a huge recession and massive job loses and, as I said, travel is a luxury and when people are unemployed or have exhausted their savings, big international trips won’t be on their agenda. Second, people will be wary of the risk of another potential outbreak. They will be concerned about picking up the virus as well as being stuck if something happens so until everyone is 100% sure they are fine, people will be more cautious in their travels.
And the cruise industry? Well, ships floating petri dishes and, no matter how good the deals, most people won’t want to get on a ship for the foreseeable future. I believe this will permanently shrink the cruise industry. Images of cruise ships unable to dock in countries will scar our psyche for years to come.
Additionally, I think countries are going to be wary about fully opening up until they know they won’t be importing the virus and there’s some treatment or vaccine. No one wants to open their borders and have a second wave of infections that overloads their healthcare system. I wouldn’t be surprised if you start to see more temperature checks in airports and I wouldn’t be if countries started asking for proof you are COVID-19 negative.
While you will probably see a lot of travel deals as companies just try to cover their costs and stay afloat, I think the whole “hop on the plane and travel” thing is going to be a lot harder until we reach a point where we have a treatment regime and vaccine for this virus.
But, maybe, the silver lining (and I always try to look for one) is that this will lead to more sustainable tourism as countries try to reduce crowds in hopes of keeping the virus in check.
Maybe this is the end of overtourism.
Whatever happens, travel is going to be a very different and smaller industry in the post-Coronavirus world.

Day 4 - Breaking Conventions
Tour Managing - Katrina
We spent most of Day 4 in the Neukölln neighbourhood, an area of Berlin that had once been a separate town called Kölln but later merged to be a part of Berlin. When the merge took place, “Neu” was added to the beginning of the name, as to not be confused with the major city Kölln on the opposite side of Germany.
After having lunch at a rooftop bar/restaurant “Klunkerkranich” overlooking Berlin and Neukölln, we made our way over to Heimathafen Neukölln, a beautiful and modern music venue, where we met Martjin, the tour manager of the artist Mitski. Martjin’s job as a tour manager and his career in the music industry stemmed from a love of music. After touring with his own band for many years, he realized he could make a life out of having fun while making money at the same time. Although he was enrolled in a Music Management course, he never finished his diploma since he felt like he was already making his way in the industry and didn’t need a formal education to get himself work. He explained that a lot of the tour managers he knows or works with come from the hardcore/punk scene, as it’s a much more “DIY” part of the music industry.
In terms of touring, Martjin gave us a very clear and direct explanation of his job and what it’s like being on the road for months on end. Primarily, it is imperative for him to prepare everything beforehand and be as prepped as possible when the tour begins. It is his job to take care of the band, keeping everyone happy and healthy, while also making sure everything that was arranged beforehand happens as scheduled. For this tour specifically, there is only a 3 people crew, whereas some bigger bands he’s worked with have had crews of close to 40 people. In this case, there is Martjin, the tour manager, Marie, the monitor tech, and Jonathan, the Front of House sound guy. In terms of handling equipment for a small venue, they hire a loader at each location to help bring everything from the van into the venue, then the musician is in charge of their own instrument as soon as its on stage (placement, amp set up etc).
It was interesting to learn that Martjin is a freelancer- he’s gotten all of his jobs through his large circle of mutual friends and music industry contacts. He also mainly accepts jobs that tour worldwide, rather than for just the European leg of the tour, since despite being away from home for months on end it makes the tour a lot easier for everyone if there is a consistent steady team. It was impressive to meet someone who has made a successful career for himself just out of pure passion and love for the industry.

Tempelhofer Airfield - Ciara
During our block of free time to explore Sasha, Kellen and I walked through Neukölln to Tempelhofer Feld. Now the largest inner city green space in the city, Tempelhofer Feld was originally created to be central Berlin’s air field. The large space and air strips were created in 1883, and was where in 1926 Deutsch Lufthansa flew their first plane. However, its history of innovation and creativity in aviation was cut short when the Nazi regime in 1936 took over the space and began using it for their own purposes, including as a concentration camp for political prisoners who were forced to labour and build the Nazi fighter jets. It was taken over by the Allied forces and used for the Berlin Blockade in 1948, and became a representation of the fight for freedom in West Berlin.
The airfield closed in 2008, and after two year reopened as the public park space it operates as today. However, the city proposed a plan to majorly reconstruct the park, closing the space and introducing new buildings and boundaries. A peoples’ referendum in 2014 overturned the idea, and the 380 hectares of land were protected and kept exactly the same to preserve the history of the place. It is now home to 19 different social and creative initiatives, including a large community garden filled with sculptures, produce, a library in a telephone booth, and places to relax and sit. The air strips are now used for biking, picnicking, flying kites, and rollerblading. The space is a reflection of Berlin’s people being dedicated to creative community spaces, preserving the history of their history instead of erasing it, and repurposing old spaces instead of destroying them. The garden that we walked through at the field was being maintained by over 500 community gardeners that volunteer their time.
It was amazing to enter the park through a busy city street and look at the sprawling landscape that one might not even realize was there. It was a respite from a busy and bustling city. When we walked out onto the field we all had to take a moment to recognize where we were standing, to remember the lives that had been lost there and the rich history the ground carried. It was amazing to experience a place that invited you to recognize that history, and yet also gave you the power to give the space new memories and purpose.

Transmodernity -Sasha
Our day ended with a screening of Halea’s film, Transmodernity. The film explored a transition into a new era of our world, tying together several sub movements and acting as an umbrella. The idea behind it is to give power back to the people. Throughout the film, we meet people who lead very different lives but together share this idea of transmodernity. Some of these people include a woman working with teaching skills to refugees in Greece; a mother and daughter who have started a sustainable vegan restaurant in Croatia; a man passionate about the legalisation and decriminalisation of drugs; and many more.
The screening took place in an independent cinema run by an Italian woman. Unfortunately, she was not able to attend the screening, so we did not get the chance to ask her questions about the history of the building. That being said, I enjoyed the atmosphere of the theatre and appreciated the struggles there must be in opening an independent cinema in the world now when there is such a monopoly in that industry. After the film, Halea and her co-producer/director Louisa held a Q&A where we were all able to fully understand the intention behind the film. Personally, there were points during the screening where I struggled to grasp the through line that connected all of these people together so I felt the Q&A allowed me to understand the concept of transmodernity.
What really resonated with me during the experience was this idea of breaking convention and following your passion rather than doing what was expected. Halea’s background is in the arts with a focus on photography rather than film making. Louisa, on the other hand, studied journalism and doesn’t hold any of the typical film skills. What drew them together was the extreme passion for the subject matter of the film rather than what could make money. They had an idea that they wanted to explore so found the means to do it. Additionally, I liked that there was no hierarchy in the team working on the film. Though this did raise some challenges, the two of them were able to work together and compromise without one person taking the lead. They attributed their lack of film skills as the reason this worked so well. All in all, the idea of transmodernity was not what resonated with me. Instead, it was the process that they went through to follow their passion.

Are you thinking of taking a cruise to Yangon (formerly Rangoon) Myanmar? We have got some great Q & A on helping you to select the best cruise to Yangon. Yangon is a wonderfully colourful melting pot of culture, religion and food and there’s no better way to enjoy the Yangon experience than to arrive in Yangon via a cruise liner.
Background on cruising to Yangon
Yangon is an emerging city that is developing so fast. Our recommendation would be to get there sooner rather than later (before it overdevelops) and resembles just another Asian city. For the time being it isn’t overly crowded with high-rise apartments, malls and pollution. The local people are friendly and welcoming and somewhat curious about visitors to their city.
The city is a juxtaposition of somewhat dilapidated British colonial architecture and new high rise construction. The former colonial grandeur of the city is evident when you visit a few of the reconstructed British constructed buildings. The High Tea at The Strand will leave an indelible impression about the former Rangoon’s (Yangon) history.
Of course, Yangon is best known for its array of Buddhist pagodas such as the Shwedagon. There’s plenty of pagodas to see in and around Yangon and for the more adventurous, you may like to head to Bagan for a balloon ride over one of the many hundreds of pagodas.
The city was founded by the Mon ethnic group who is one of the eight major ethnic groups in Myanmar. It has evolved from a small fishing village in the early 11th century where it was known as Dagon. By the way, you can still visit a Mon ethnic village on one of the great tours in Yangon.
Following two 19th-century Anglo-Burmese wars, the British seized Yangon and all of lower Burma in the 1850s. The Brits (as they do) turned Yangon into their seat of power in Burma, building an infrastructure that was said to rival London at the time.
Unfortunately, the city fell to Japan in World War II and entered years of political turmoil following independence in 1948. The military took power in 1962, and the repressive regime only began to relinquish control in 2010.
Yangon has an estimated 6 million residents (mostly the Burman ethnic group) and the city spreads northward from the Yangon River. It truly is a cultural smorgasbord and you won’t be disappointed when travelling to this great city.
When should I go to Myanmar by cruise ship?
Cruises typically travel to Yangon during its dry season  (December to March) because of the high temperature and humidity outside of this time. If you travel between December and March the temperature range is typically very pleasant around 18 deg Celcius overnight and 32 degrees Celcius during the day. On average, July -August are the most humid months (average >80%) and January is the least humid month averaging just over 60%. So plan on a December – January cruise to Yangon if you can.
What are the port facilities in Yangon like?
Well…as we said before, Yangon is developing and so are its’ port facilities. They are quite simple and essentially are somewhere where you can disembark and embark. Don’t expect too much.
There are two locations for docking in Yangon and your cruise liner will typically be limited to its docking location based on its’ size and depth of the draft.
The Yangon City Dock
If your ship isn’t too large you’ll be able to cruise up the Yangon river and dock in the city. Ships around 190m can dock in the heart of Yangon, at Bo Aung Kyaw Jetty (or, in some cases, nearby Nanthida Jetty). It’s a great location (just below Strand Road) (Look for the label “Myanmar Port Authority” on Google Maps.)
From the dock, it’s a couple of hundred metres walk to the Port gate. Obviously if you head out on your own make sure that you carry your Ship ID documents to re-enter the port area. There is no covered terminal or services at the port so don’t have too high expectations.
Thilawa Port/ Hutchison Port Terminal
Ships of up to 260 metres with larger drafts, unfortunately, have to dock at the deeper port 25 kilometers south of the city. With the current roadworks, it can take an hour to two hours drive to the city centre so be mindful of the time when travelling. Most cruise companies will offer transfers to the centre of Yangon on the hour from Thilwa Port. Bear in mind the port has no facilities and it is an industrial port so once again, keep the expectations low.
Before you book, ask your cruise company where the ship will dock as if you’re only on a short stay, a couple of hours travelling to and from the port can be a little frustrating for some travellers.
The Yangon River is tidal and so you sailing times can vary accordingly (at low tide, you won’t be going anywhere).
Which ships offer cruises to Yangon?
Firstly over the next several months, there are a number of ships that offer cruises to Yangon including:
The Azamara Quest which departs from Singapore;
The Insignia departing from Cape Town or San Francisco;
The Seven Seas Explorer departing from Dubai or Barcelona;
The Seabourn Sojourn departing from the Maldives;
The Nautica departing from Singapore;
The Seabourn Ovation from Hong Kong.
The Silver Spirit from Mumbai;
The Silver Shadow from Singapore or departing from Yangon.
Of course, all of these wonderful ships offer a vast variety of quality experiences that will get you from your point of embarkation to disembarkation with relative ease.
One of the key motivators for which ship to take maybe your point of departure
For Australian travellers, Singapore is one of the better departure points because of its proximity to Australia.  A short 8-hour flight from most Australian airports will have you in Singapore enjoying a Singapore Sling, enjoying Chilli Crab or just taking in the wonderful shopping experiences that Singapore has to offer.
