RinRei #14: lab partners au

As insufferable and annoying as he can be Rin can’t help but agree that Ryuugazaki Rei is the perfect lab partner to have. All his notes are extremely neat and well organized, he keeps the work space in perfect order, and does not take risks like a certain pink eyed blond that Rin knows. The only issue is that Rei is so obsessed with doing everything perfect and by the book that Rin doesn’t get to participate much in their experiments.

Really Rin feels like he’s just the hot assistant who giggles and hands over tools when need be. Rin goes along with it though since they always get an A and Rei is cute when he’s in the zone anyway. The way his eyes narrow in concentration and that crease forms when he frowns is really precious. Not to mention sometimes he accidentally sticks out his tongue when measuring things, but then he notices and quickly fixes his face. Then when their project is a success he gives Rin the brightest smile ever and thanks him for his hard work as if handing over a beaker is a tough job to do.

Rin sighs and leans on the counter and watches as Rei starts the Bunsen burner and pulls out the needed beakers. He watches as Rei starts reading the rest of the instructions to their assignment. As Rin watches he notices that Rei’s lab coat sleeves are rather loose and hanging far too low for comfort.

“Hey isn’t that dangerous? Your sleeves I mean?” Rin points out. Rei glances at him and then down at his coat and blushes slightly.

“This was the last coat available but it’s sadly rather large.” Rei explains as he steps away from the counter to show Rin the coat. Rin gets a good look and sure enough Rei is practically swimming in his lab coat. Rin lets out a fond sigh masked with annoyance and steps forward grabbing Rei’s sleeves tugging Rei closer to him. He slowly rolls them up and then uses a safety pin to keep them in place.

“There now that’s less dangerous. Sheesh you’d think you’d take better care not to violate safety code.” Rin complains as he smirks at Rei. Rei blushes even more and turns his face away while adjusting his glasses.

“I would have handled it before we did anything that could be dangerous to our safety but thank you for your assistance Rin-san.” Rei mummers the last part and for some reason that has Rin’s heart beating faster than it should be.

“Guess I’m like your caretaker instead of a lab partner.” Rin teases as he leans against the counter trying to appear composed. Rei rolls his eyes at this but smiles softly anyway. He’s about to reply with a sassy comment until he notices something flickering out the side of his eye.

“RIN-SAN YOUR LAB COAT IS ON FIRE.”

“FUCK!”

I haven't read all the arguments, so I'm not sure if it's been brought up, but I think it's worth noting similarities between the prevalence and use of lobotomies and the rite of Tranquility. A procedure that drastically alters a person's personality and often used as a way to gain control and conformity. (and it's creation more as a way to, and i'm putting this in probably not the best wording, fix a problem easily rather than deal with the issue carefully)

YEP, like even in my first playthrough of DA:O, it seemed as if Tranquility was being presented as a spiritual lobotomy of sorts. I wrote a post awhile back about Tranquil mages (it’s here if you’re interested) because like... I feel like the portrayal/framing of Tranquility in the games actually utilizes a lot of ableist tropes, e.g. the implication that flat affect and apparent lack of normative emotional experience makes Tranquil mages somehow less than people.

But yeah, I think the Rite of Tranquility not only exists to gain control and conformity (both of Tranquil mages and non-Tranquil mages, since it’s held over their heads as a threat), but because it provides the Chantry with a fully compliant free labor source, since Tranquility seems to either remove or severely restrict the capacity to consent/dissent. We’re always hearing people talk about how ‘efficient’ and ‘productive’ the Tranquil are (Owain is described like this in DA:O, Minaeve describes Tranquil mages like this in DA:I, and in DA2 Meredith’s Tranquil assistant says that Meredith values her because she ‘believes Tranquil mages to be efficient and single-minded’). I think that’s actually the main reason the Rite of Tranquility even still exists. It doesn’t even actually make demonic possession impossible, it only decreases the likelihood that demons will take an interest in the mage. And the Seekers of the Truth have known of the cure for Tranquility for a long-ass time and have been actively covering it up. The Rite doesn’t exist to protect against the dangers of the Fade or magic, it just exists to terrorize mages, eliminate dissent, and provide a source of income for the Circle/Chantry (and yet supposedly slavery is illegal outside of Tevinter).

Another person also pointed out here that in an Andrastian frame of reference, Tranquility actually cuts mages off from the Maker, since it prevents them from returning to the Fade (the home of the Maker) in their dreams, so like... it takes on an additional element of spiritual abuse as well (as if the Circle didn’t already have enough of that).

"Where the fuck did that clown come from?" RinRei (because omg that line made me laugh way too loud)

(Oh, man, how to build up to that? Okay, I can do this. *cracks fingers*)

They were jogging a bit later than normal that day, but since it was the weekend neither of them minded much. They were taking a new route through town, anyway, and that was a task best undertaken during the day when they had the best lighting. Whether it was the route change or the different time of day that led to the, for lack of a better word, interesting events that afternoon, neither of them really knew for sure. Rei, for his part, thought it was probably a little bit of both.

It seemed like a normal jog at first. They met at the train station like normal and then headed off on the route Rei had planned for them that day. As they reached the park, Rei collided with someone who jumped out of nowhere onto the walking path, falling back onto his butt and immediately nursing the growing bruise on his forehead. He didn’t get a good look at the person he’d run into, but he heard whoever it was running away as Rin helped him back to his feet.

"Where the heck did that clown come from?" Rin demanded, his gaze fixed down the walking path.

"Clown?" Rei asked, still rubbing his forehead, praying he wouldn’t get a bump there. Having a bump on his forehead would definitely not be beautiful. “That was a clown?”

"Yeah, definitely. All dressed up with those gigantic shoes, bright pink-and-yellow clothing, round pink nose, with blonde hair, and…" Rin frowned, eyes narrowing. "You’re kidding me."

"Huh?"

"I’m pretty sure it was Nagisa. Did you tell him where we were going to be jogging today?"

"No. But he is Nagisa-kun. He probably figured it out somehow.”

Rin looked at Rei, studying his face for a moment, then nodded.

"You’re okay, right? Because we should catch up to the little penguin and kick his butt."

"I believe I’m all right." Rei stretched his arms out in front of him. "I’m sure Nagisa-kun didn’t mean it, though."

"Well, let’s go find out."

They headed down the path and into the heart of the park until they spotted the clown. He was making balloon animals for a group of kids, who were all jumping up and down and cheering with each completed balloon. Rin and Rei stopped near the gaggle of kids and waited for the clown—who, yes, was definitely Nagisa-kun—to finish making balloons for all of them. When the crowd of kids left, the two joggers approached their blond friend.

"What’s the deal, Nagisa?" Rin growled, folding his arms across his chest. "You nearly took my boyfriend out, you little jerk."

"I promise, it was an accident, Rei-chan!" Nagisa-kun said, looking sincerely apologetic. "I was getting a drink of water, but I had to hurry back to make balloons for the kids! I’m so sorry!"

"What are you even doing here, Nagisa-kun?" Honestly, Rei had already forgiven his best friend for the accident, even if Rin wasn’t ready to just yet.

"I got a part-time job!" Nagisa-kun said proudly, puffing out his chest.

"Yeah, well, it’s a pretty fitting one," Rin muttered. "You’re honestly the biggest clown out of our little group of friends, aren’t you?"

Nagisa-kun flashed a playful smile and a wink. He shooed Rin and Rei off when a group of children ran over to him and started asking him for balloon animals. Shaking his head, Rin gestured for them to continue jogging, and Rei nodded. They headed out of the park, continued jogging for another twenty minutes or so, and then headed back to Samezuka Academy to cool off.

"Well that was the weirdest jog I’ve ever been on,” Rin said, flopping down onto his bed the minute they got back to his room.

"I think I might need medical attention," Rei admitted slowly.

"Huh?" Rin sat up and stared at him. "Are you serious?"

Rei sat down next to him on the bed. He waited until Rin leaned close to study his forehead, then took his chance and pressed a firm kiss to Rin’s lips. When he pulled back, Rin chuckled.

"Sneaky," the redhead said with a grin. "I think I’m a bad influence on you."

"Either you or Nagisa-kun," Rei agreed. An image of Nagisa-kun in his clown costume ran through his head and he started laughing. "Nagisa-kun the clown."

Rin started laughing, too. The both of them kept laughing for several minutes. All Rei could think—and he was sure Rin was wondering about it, too—was how the heck Nagisa-kun had even found such a part time job.

i’m just thinking of stories i’ve heard where dolphins literally have humped people to death. (dolphins like to hump things a lot since they can’t actually masturbate and sometimes people have to die because they can’t control their libido)

To say he didn't know how this started would be a lie. He knew fully well how this little.... arrangement, if you will, had begun.

His brother had texted him twenty minutes into waiting for him after class had ended saying he'd have to take the train home. Expect the next train wouldn't arrive for another hour or so which left Rei stranded at school. Rei assumed he looked like a lost and beaten puppy because the next moment an extremely hot red head had offered him a ride home on his motorcycle. Rei accepted after a quick calculation determined that the odds of this ending badly was in the low percentage range. The ride wasn't awkward but it wasnt eventful either, in all it was very calming in a sense. He made it home safely and as they parted ways he learned the other student's name was Matsuoka Rin.

So no he knew how this all began what he didn't know was how it kept going after the first ride. Normally they would either never see each other again or just barely acknowledge the others existence around campus if they happened to cross paths briefly. Without realizing it Rin had slowly fazed into Rei's everyday life. Rei even now had a purple helmet with a black butterfly on the side that he used when Rin gave him a ride. With jogging meet ups in the early morning and lunch dates here and there it was like Rin was always there from the beginning.

Rei hadn't realized how far deep he was in until Rin had given him his jacket on a cold day. Rei had double checked the weather to make sure that a jacket wouldn't be needed only to walk out of his last class and be battered by a gust of harsh cold wind. When he arrived to the parking lot where Rin was waiting, Rin took one glance at him, shrugged off his signature leather jacket, and handed it to him.

Of course Rei protested against it "I can't possibly accept this Rin-san. It wouldn't be right." but Rin was having none if it and insisted Rei take it. "Look just take the damn jacket and let's go already before you freeze to death out here." Rei could have sworn he saw Rin blushing but the other student had already put his helmet on with a dramatic huff.

So Rei shrugged into the jacket which was indeed very warm and oddly comforting. He tried not to think too hard about it, took his seat on Rin's motorcycle, and then they were off. The entire ride was normal except Rei couldn't focus on anything but the jacket he was wearing. How it smelled faintly of expensive cologne and chlorine which was slightly expected. The way it was slightly tattered at the end of the sleeves and had Bobby pins attached to the hem on the bottom.

Everything about this simple jacket was so "Rin" Rei felt almost overwhelmed by it all. Or was it the fact his brain kept reminding him of the romantic undertones of using someone else's jacket like this? Whatever it was it had Rei so preoccupied he hadn't even noticed they made it home. Rin walked with Rei to his front door, since let's be honest Rei looked like he'd walk into his neighbors home he was that distracted at the moment, where Rei gave him a quick farewell kiss on the cheek without thinking and rushed inside.

It was until he heard the motorcycle speed off did Rei realize what he had done. Not only did he kiss Rin but he was still wearing Rin's jacket. Rei panicked for a full five minutes until his phone buzzed alerting him of a message.

-Next time I except a kiss on the lips also you look really cute in my jacket. I think I'll let you wear it more often...-

really?? i seriously do not want a touch screen like i can just imagine watching an episode of teen wolf and going to stroke scott mccall's face and accidentally exiting every window. i spend too much time touching my screen for it to be safe for me to use a touch screen!!
