Day (25/30) DOP COLLAB CHALLENGE
There was no offline school today because of NEET (I have only a year left AHHHHH), but we did have online classes.
They started at 9, and I woke up at 9:05—but thankfully class actually began at 9:10. The teachers were struggling with the online setup and it totally took me back to COVID times lol.
Anyway, class ended around 12:40-ish, after which I procrastinated, cleaned my room (which was an absolute pig’s pen for the past week or so), ironed my uniform, and did other random stuff. I still haven’t even broomed my room yet—planning to do that tomorrow.
It’s almost 7 pm rn and these are the things I've still yet to do will have to end up pulling an all nighter just when I was planning to get my sleep schedule fixed wtf.
They gave us so much work just because we had Sunday, which wasn’t even technically off. Watch me as I die?
Also I’m most stressed about the speaking test in English which they count towards our internal marks so AHHHH.

im offically out of high school!!!!!!! what an eventful day :)!!!! journal time!!!!!
> the graduation ceremony was so fucking far away from me i had to catch a big ass train thats actually pretty good for traveling out of your city > hhowever there was no cafe car in it which made me annoyed but its whatever i guess. even more annoyed because i forgot to make a sandwich and take it with me, and my mother kept emphasizing the possibility of the car having a cafe car but its ok because we got food at two places > however listening to music on max volume with headphones while staring out the window on the train is so awesome and a freeing experience i 100% recommend doing this when youre on a train > had to suffer through a bunch of bickering and almost-arguments between my mother and grandmother but we move i guess??? > we got to the place that held the ceremony kind of late > my anxiety is usually not so bad but while sitting down to wait for my row to stand and moving as guided, i genuinely was feeling close to being a bit sick > i saw my english teacher walking to see the students and i thought about getting her to like. Notice that i was a student in her class and chat with her but i was so caught up about my anxiety about the graduation i just didnt have the strength to talk > two boys sitting next to me were yapping and yapping. some of the things they said were funny and totally relatable as someone else also very cynical about the school but we're graduating from they seemed a little loud?? and it was annoying at some points. but also amusing at some points too. and about three girls, including one next to me, kept turning their head and giving them the side stare which was a little funny > speaking of being cynical about school this graduation lowkey made me insecure about having a 3.4 gpa even though i thought it was good and also stupid about thinking the "distinguished honor roll" being listed in my report cards for a few years straight was genuinely important enough for an reward or shout out or like you know a simple acknowledgement but whatever i guess. > however the constant "congrats for graduating :D" and the occasional "you look so pretty :D" comments when i wore my robe and cap to hershey chocolate world and in public in general. on the side note i kept getting stared at by a few people which was a bit weird but we move > yes i went to hershey chocolate world!!! genuinely was moreso thinking about going on a train to center city to go to one of my favorite restaurants to eat at but a kind teacher + guide got me to consider going to hershey chocolate world's and i decided to go!!! because not only it was convenient as we were near by, but also going to that amusement park would be a much more rarer experience than going to that restaurant i wanted to go before > its a bit of a whimsical place i like it however i do not buy into hershey's propaganda about their chocolate. However i did eat a mini hershey bar i got for free and i liked it yay > sweets are genuinely good for the human to function is what i got out of this experiecne because i ate one hershey bar after months (probs a few years) of not having one and some how it tasted so good yay. also a yellow ladybug (looked more like one of those asian bugs but let me believe) landed on my finger while i walked around and ate the chocolate bar but my grandma shooed it away because she was paranoid it would bite me > after that and getting take out food from one of the restaurants in the world we went to station to catch a train back home but there were constant delays. but while we were waiting i couldnt help but to admire how bright it looked even when it was around 8:20-8:40 PM. i also found the site of fireflies in the distance to be so amazing i pointed towards them and was like LOOK!!! fireflies :D because i hardly see them in the city anymore. fireflies are so whimsical and comforting > i came home at like 12 am which was crazy considering we left home at 9:40 am. so thats like... idk almost 24 hours idk shit im tired im still writing this and its 2:08.
I'm finally out of highschool. but a part of me feels a bit empty after graduating; its not even just about feeling my achievements werent acknowledged (at least i thought they were good and significant achievements but im not sure, probably not) but like also going to school being like.l I dont know like my "purpose" for a significant phase of my life, that is childhood and teenhood. but its like weird because going out of highschool at at least feeling like stepping into the adult world, but i hardly have the skills to feel like an adult plus i will *still* be treated as a minor because well i am a minor. so its like Im out but its like. Idk. Its still a huge part of my identity so its kind of weird to be officially out of school, especially considering im still considered a minor so that legal stance of me still being a minor plus the lack of independent skills i have due to not being taught or encouraged to have those skills kind of conflicts with me supposedly being an "adult" now? Idk but anyways.
time to focus on studying the driving manual and finishing up my resume and start applying for summer jobs! bye guys

What it’s like being an English major?
Tumblr media
When people are asking what program I am taking in college as of the moment and when I answered them I am currently an Education student, they be like “oh okay but when they ask others and their program is related to medical field—suddenly they are amazed. Being an Education student is hard starting from the expectations of the people around you to be a role model because you are a future educator and act as a model to the students what more when you are officially working as a teacher. An educator talks a lot because that is their work which is to talk in a class discussion.
As an Education student we are practiced to talk a lot in front of the class using the English language. We have started studying about the five domains of the language and the first one is about the sounds of the letters in the alphabet which is called phonology, the rules of word structure which is called morphology, the rules of sentence structure which is called syntax, the actual meaning behind each word within a sentence within a message which is called semantics, and lastly the functional use of language in social contexts which is called pragmatics.
Tumblr media
We were able to conduct a reading program at a public elementary school in our city. It was very fulfilling moment for us to have one wherein we helped those students who are still struggling in reading English words so we have prepared vocabulary words for them to read. We have started from asking them what are the sound of a specific alphabet to reading pictures with names on it and lastly, having a one-on-one reading session to really see who struggles with reading. I was so happy to be able to experience having a program like that and see the children’s smiles on their faces as they received the token we have prepared for them because they have participated. When we conducted that program we were able to apply what we have learned in our subject called Structures of English and with that we are not the only one who learnt something but we also had the chance to do it in actual.

Tumblr media
We also talked about the tree diagram wherein it shows the structure of a sentence and how are they organized which helped us to use our analogy to identify which part of speech is that word is affiliated with.
Tumblr media
An English major student are obviously expected to speak in English when we are tasked to do a reporting for us to practice though our grammar and fluency may not be perfect at first since it’s not our native language but as the years passed I can see some improvements not only to our speaking skills but also our confidence to speak the language. We also do a lot of essays, reflection papers, and even writing letters, emails, résumé.
This program is not only about talking and writing but we also studied about material development wherein we need to produce a digital teaching material and we are free to choose whatever topic we want to discuss as long as it is in the K-12 Basic Education Curriculum but it still depends to our instructor if it is about vocabulary, listening, speaking etc. and all of the digital teaching materials we made has a assessment at the end of the presentation. For our final task, our instructor required us to make a physical teaching material and it should be indigenized, localized, and contextualized that why my group mates and I decided to build a mini Kubo house(nipa hut) for it to be called indigenized and localized for it is widely known in the Philippines and it is contextualized because we used it to teach about the signage’s that we encounter in our daily lives may it be in our house or any public places.

ADVANTAGES OF BEING AN ENGLISH MAJOR:
It improves our vocabulary
It improves our writing skills
It improves our speaking skills
It boosts our confidence to speak the language
It enhances our critical thinking skills when we study about a literature
It opens a lot of opportunities
Tutor a student who struggles about the English subject

rambling to self bc i have a pen but no paper
anyway so the thing where you say “ok now set x equal to twelve” and the kid starts typing the Words “set x…” and you have to correct them to type “x = 12”, whether that’s an artifact of language in general or just a missed translation of the literal phrase
like it might be to do with age, kids start to extrapolate what you mean better and understand alternate phrasings (set x equal to, update x’s value, change x to be, et al). versus when they’re younger, maybe they take it more literally?
or it might not be related to age at all, or at least not completely
- could be due to neurodivergence, if the kid takes everything literally bc of how their brain is wired
- could be that they’re thinking of coding languages as equivalent to spoken languages, sort of how a new learner from english to spanish translates things directly, eg confusion over las vacaciones just being vacation in general
- could be based on home situations, maybe their parents are the type to mean things very literally when they say it, so it’s what the kid is used to? (which would then extend to where the parent gets that from, depending how many layers back it goes)
anyway just generally whether the acquisition of languages is comparable with coding vs spoken languages, not to mention sign language? obviously if a kid starts learning coding younger then it’ll be easier if/when they do it in college, but is it the same advantage a kid would have learning a ‘standard’ second language young? i want to say i’ve seen it be that learning a new language is easier the younger you are, but would that apply to coding languages? even outside the matter of syntax and stuff, since of course you wouldn’t have the typing verbatim words “set x equal” problem when working in scratch. scratch might be comparable to kids using building letter blocks, grabbing each letter and placing it where it goes to form a word? it’s more complicated, since they’re also learning about logic (loops, if statements, broadcasting, movement), but it feels tangential to the unus annus spelling game video
then you might also have to worry about the fact that, similar to how there’s multiple Standard Languages, there’s multiple coding languages, where each of those has their own basic building blocks (usually)
standard languages typically have verbs, nouns, pronouns, infinitives, tenses, et al
coding languages typically have functions, variables, operations, im sure there’s more i’m forgetting, et al
and obviously there’s edge cases, like how that one languages doesn’t have any numbers, and how there’s no native string functionality in C (i think, it’s been a minute since i took that class)
but the same way a kid learning spanish is not the same as a kid learning german, a kid learning python is not the same as a kid learning java. obviously python and java use the same Standard Language, but their syntax and such is different. versus the standard languages, at least with spanish/german you’re still going to be working with the same set of alphabetical characters (plus ñ, ß, accents, …), but it’s the construction and order that differs
eg in standard languages, you might have to worry about if the adjective goes before or after the noun, which extends to the lovely little old green dragon issue in english. in coding languages, python lets you just say “x = 17” and then two lines later say “x = ‘bootypants’”, and it’s fine. in C++, you have to declare x as an int first, and then it’s an int forever
new tangent but it’s a lot harder to just casually learn coding in your down time. you typically need either a huge textbook or an interactive tech device, and usually it’s learned through practice (either specific instructions or general guiding along making whatever you want), at least in my experience. with standard languages, you can really just do that however you want - find books for basically any grade/age, listen to podcasts, watch shows and movies, …
the closest equivalent to that is watching/hearing people talk ABOUT coding, but that’s usually more about quirks and pros and cons of a given language or syntax, and less about actually learning the language itself.
then also the matter of how there’s usually at least three components to standard languages - listening, speaking, and reading. then additional necessities, eg expression and gestures (obviously more significant in sign language) and indirect phrases (sarcasm, metaphors) that are more nuanced
that’s all i’ve got for now i think, tbd if i rb this post or just make a new one every time i have a thought but im gonna give it an organizational tag just in case ✌️🫶

There's a bunch of classes they make everyone take just take those. I shit you not before you even touch your degree you're supposed to take like a whole bunch of high school part 2 stuff like they make you take a class on how to do excel and a class on PowerPoint and algebra again and a class that's basically high school English but they're talking down to you even more and you can't even test out of it they make you take it anyway and call it survey of lit but it's easier than high school English like they think you're on drugs and then they make you take a writing class and it's just a normal fucking composition class and they pretend it's related to your degree but it's boring as shit and if you complain they say some people might not have learned it in high school like they think you're complaining because you're stupid and not because you're bored and feel like these people are intentionally trying to waste your time and make you leave and then when you finally get to the classes that are relevant to the degree they're all like 80% stuff you already read about in the magazines you used your student discount to subscribe to already and the rest is just getting good at managing the assignment schedule and all the assignments are just "go on page 12 of the reading and answer a multiple choice question about it." It's not real it's just a boring test of your executive function and time management and ass kissing skills.
Or take a certificate program for like 6 months to a year to get a job doing a trade or medical thing and get some money and save it.

I kind of suddenly realized this during therapy last week and I’ve been thinking about this a lot this week, but:
I don’t really know how to challenge myself to do difficult things. I tend to just...drop something when it gets too hard and I have to put actual effort in. And I really hate how I can only think of one or two teachers in my entire life who not only saw I could do better, but who actively made me do better. I never really learned to have the patience to slowly build my skills - if I don’t improve very rapidly very easily, I just won’t continue.
And because of that, I might have surface level knowledge of a lot of things, but nothing that actually goes deeper, because that requires effort and it’s easier to just move to a new topic and learn the basics of that, repeat ad infinitum.
Part of it is also just genuinely having a lot of interests and an almost annoying amount of curiosity. It’s hard for me to stick to one topic because there are so many interesting things in the world, I just want to learn it all.
I think some part of it is also fear. My whole life I’ve been called ‘smart’, ‘intelligent’, ‘intimidating’, ‘I bet you’re good at this new thing immediately’, ‘you’re so smart, why don’t you understand this’, so now if I’m not immediately and effortlessly good (or, preferably, amazingly perfect & a natural talent) at something I just don’t bother with it.
But I’m really starting to feel like I’m missing out on something. Like I could do better at a lot of things, be better at a lot of things, if only I’d actually struggle through the difficult parts and put some proper effort in it, but at this point I don’t even know how to do that? And it sounds so exhausting too, like I just don’t have the energy for it.
Anyway there’s not really a point to this post other than that I’m just kinda :( about a lot of stuff.
