Why did you name that kid knives? Or did you just let them pick their own names.

I suspect that I am very bad at giving out names. My twins' names come as a reminder of [REDACTED]. I did not wish for [REDACTED] to happen ever again. The Plants, all of them, are essentially something that we humans use as a kind of livestock, I am sad to say. They are like cattle, gifting us milk with which to live - except, with them, it is all resources. This is where the name of one of my sons comes from - Vash, after vache' - the French for "cow." I thought it important to never forget the status that had been thrust upon their species by our forebears. "Vash" also is a name after Hindi, I have so heard, meaning certain good things like "bright" and "brave." Anyway, it just sounded right in my head. Knives, on the other hand, was a reminder of that...other thing that happens to cattle. And of [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED]. I wanted him to be strong, to protect his brother - just as a cow can also protected itself - the bull and his horns, the wielder of a knife to turn back a threat. It also reminded me of my own duties. Anyone who DARED lay a hand on my children would be met by millions of knives of my own fury. This... doesn't sound very "Rem" of me, does it? I am, on the whole, a very gentle person. I do not believe that anyone has the right to take the life of another. However, I decided that I would do whatever it takes to protect these miracles after [REDACTED] [REDACTED]. I named my children what I did to make them strong... and to make me strong. Also the fact that the lil' scamp sprouted little knives out of his skin at random a few times when he was in diapers and got me cut something wicked when I tried to pick him up didn't hurt with the naming. He learned to control his powers better pretty quickly. Plants, you know? _ R.S. [WARNING! WARNING MISS SAVEREM! VIOLATION OF PROTOCOL! UNAUTHORIZED SHARING OF CLASSIFIED INFORMATION! Any time I post content relating to baby Knives and his corruption, there's inevitably people who make a comment about how the difference between Vash and Knives is that Knives didn't get a moment with Rem like Vash did, but Knives didn't need one. He knew she loved them already. That's why he never lashed out at her.

Knives is open and honest with Rem until the end. He doesn't pretend like he isn't hurt. When she addresses how he's "forcing [himself] to carry it all alone" he's completely honest with her:

Rem: Are… you… trying to bear this all by yourself? Tesla's story must have been a shock to you. I'm sorry, but I just feel like… you're forcing yourself to carry this alone, shutting everything away inside. Knives: Yeah. I am. It was a shock. It really was, but… we have to go on. That's what you said, right? There's so much we have to do… to make sure it never happens again.

While he doesn't straight up just say "hey I'm going to kill all humans", he is otherwise open with her that he's decided to carry the weight of protecting them from humans. Maybe if Rem was better equipped to handle a traumatized child, she would have been able to better address Knives' trauma, but the issue was never her or her love.

You can see it in the way he still cries and finds comfort in her embrace, and thanks her, and the montage of them living happily together. Knives never withdrew from Rem like Vash initially did. He was purely afraid of other humans and what they might do to his family, Rem included. All of his hate for her came after the Fall.

Me and @theeviltwinduh were talking and we think we've come up with an idea of a Death Note au that takes place in a world with SOULs like in Undertale? It's kind of just a fun thinkpiece idea, but here's what we have so far:

SOUL TYPES:

L: determination

Light: integrity (until death note)

Matsuda: kindness

Soichiro: justice

Sayu: perseverance

Near: determination

Mello: bravery

Matt: perseverance

Watari: patience 

Misa: kindness (until Death Note)

Ryuk: monster soul (or soulless)

Rem: monster (soulless maybe)

What is unknown by Death Note users is the fact that using a Death Note means your soul slowly corrodes until it becomes nothing. Think Flowey style (but more gradually over time).

Remnants of the soul (if any) belong to the shinigami who originally owned the Death Note

Shinigami (which are one kind of monsters, although not all monsters are shinigami nor were all once Death Note users) were once humans, who, after exchanging their souls for the use of the Death Note, once they die, become shinigami.
