one day while I’m working on my wroth dissertation some renlit/fan studies scholar is going to think to write about what tumblr has had to say about the sidney-herberts, find my blog since it’s the only really substantial sidney-herbert content generator out there, cite my posts in an article like Figure 1: Tumblr post from LikeNiobe, “unnamed shepherd is a reader surrogate,” Untitled Blog, Tumblr, 15 June 2019, and doxx me in volume 48 issue 2 of the sidney journal

It’s always nice when the daily reading introduces me to a new author that I like :D
“Times Go by Turns”
THE lopped tree in time may grow again,   Most naked plants renew both fruit and flower; The sorriest wight may find release of pain,   The driest soil suck in some moistening shower.       Times go by turns, and chances change by course,       From foul to fair, from better hap to worse. The sea of Fortune doth not ever flow,   She draws her favours to the lowest ebb. Her tides hath equal times to come and go,   Her loom doth weave the fine and coarsest web.       No joy so great but runneth to an end,       No hap so hard but may in fine amend. Not always fall of leaf, nor ever spring,   No endless night, yet not eternal day; The saddest birds a season find to sing,   The roughest storm a calm may soon allay.       Thus, with succeeding turns, God tempereth all,       That man may hope to rise, yet fear to fall. A chance may win that by mischance was lost;   The net, that holds no great, takes little fish; In some things all, in all things none are crossed;   Few all they need, but none have all they wish.       Unmeddled joys here to no man befall;       Who least, hath some; who most, hath never all.

Thomas Campion  - The Man of Life Upright
Tumblr media
The man of life vpright,     Whose guiltlesse hart is free From all dishonest deedes,     Or thought of vanitie, The man whose silent dayes,     In harmeles ioys are spent, Whom hopes cannot delude,     Nor sorrow discontent; That man needs neither towers     Nor armour for defence, Nor secret vautes to flie     From thunders violence. Hee onely can behold     With vnafrighted eyes The horrours of the deepe     And terrours of the Skies. Thus, scorning all the cares     That fate, or fortune brings, He makes the heau'n his booke,     His wisedome heeu'nly things, Good thoughts his onely friendes,     His wealth a well-spent age, The earth his sober Inne     And quiet Pilgrimage.

Quote
From Extraordinary Malvern:- "On this day 21 February 1595 The death of Robert Southwell, English priest and poet (b. 1561) Robert Southwell also Saint Robert Southwell, was an English Roman Catholic priest of the Jesuit Order. He was also a poet and clandestine missionary in post-Reformation England. After being arrested and imprisoned in 1592, and intermittently tortured and questioned by Richard Topcliffe, Southwell eventually was tried and convicted of high treason for his links to the Holy See. On 21 February 1595, Father Southwell was hanged at Tyburn. In 1970, he was canonised by Pope Paul VI as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. Saint Robert Southwell, S.J. (1561–1595). Merry Christmas to all our followers and readers, and Happy Birthday to Our Lord Jesus!

“As I in hoary winter’s night stood shivering in the snow, Surprised I was with sudden heat which made my heart to glow ; And lifting…

Thomas Campion - Though You Are Young And I Am Old
Tumblr media
Though you are yoong and I am olde,
Though your vaines hot, and my bloud colde,
Though youth is moist, and age is drie,
Yet embers liue, when flames doe die.
The tender graft is easely broke,
But who shall shake the sturdie Oke?
You are more fresh and faire then I,
Yet stubs doe liue when flowers doe die.
Thou that thy youth doest vainely boast,
Know buds are soonest nipt with frost,
Thinke that thy fortune still doth crie,
Thou foole, to-morrow thou must die.

Omg I’m so damn tired! Bed before 11 and I still had to coax myself up at 8:15 this morning. I am not going to make my RenLit class this morning so I’ll just have to turn in my paper to her box after my CogPsych class. I’m so tired my brain is all smush. I hate these days. All the coffee in the world couldn’t help - doesn’t mean I’m not going to give it a try tho 😂
