Repost from @thebirdrescuecenter You have no doubt seen a series of holes drilled into a tree like the ones in this photograph, but often the bird that made them is no longer present. Here in Sonoma County, these holes are made by the Red-breasted sapsucker. Unlike other woodpeckers who are foraging for insects and grubs, sapsuckers are after sap and dig small “sap wells “ in the bark of trees. Recent studies indicate that the Rufous hummingbird will also use these sap wells for its own nourishment (and symbiosis is exciting!). While this activity rarely kills the tree, it can be harmful and may weaken it. To deter woodpeckers of all kinds (especially those who like your house as a grainery, like the Acorn woodpecker), the recommendations all seem to include pie tins and foil that flash, or things that move in trees and houses. If a tree is damaged by sapsuckers and needs a break, burlap tied over the area can help. Hi, everybody. On Tuesday, Bons and I rescued this little baby bird. She was on the sidewalk, bloodied and dirty, clearly in bad shape, but as soon as I saw she was moving and breathing, I could NOT leave her there. Carefully, I brought her to my apartment, and immediately Googled what to do. Found a true angel on earth, Beverly. She is a licensed bird rescuer in the East Village, and although she told me I should measure my hopes for this little baby, she took her in. “I can keep her warm and do everything I can.” That’s all I needed to hear. “Nobody should die alone, in pain, in fear, and forgotten,” I thought. It’s one of my biggest fears... . Hopped on a cab as fast as I could - while also trying not to move the container I had the baby in too much - and took the baby to her. I cried so much when I handed her over to Beverly and we immediately connected. Animal lovers know other animal lovers. . Long story short (although this is already super long), the hatchling is a strong warrior and she is still with us! As a matter of fact, Beverly told me she’s been eating, being vocal, her wounds are looking much much better, AND SHE HAS STARTED TO OPEN HER EYES! I don’t know if it’s a girl or boy, but I’ve been calling her Vida (life in Portuguese). . So send Vida, the sparrow, healing energy. This baby had almost zero chance of surviving, but she’s proving to be a tough cookie. We are taking one day at a time, and we still don’t know if she will be able to use her right wing. Bonnie is asking you to keep Vida in your thoughts too! . Also, Beverly is not government funded so if anyone is interested in making a donation to her, hit me up and I’ll send you her info! LOOK AT MY BABY, GUYS! So proud of her. And now I’m crying again.... . . . No matter what happens, she has pushed me to self reflect a lot, confront traumas of my past, fears, and sadness I’ve carried in my heart for many years. They are not gone, but now I see them.
