"Animals" is the tenth studio album by the English progressive rock band Pink Floyd, released on January 21, 1977, in the UK
Contrary to what might be inferred from its epic scope, it was originally released as a single vinyl LP, not a double album. Its relatively short length (around 41 minutes) for a concept album is often noted by fans.
The album is a dark and cynical critique of the socio-political conditions in mid-1970s Britain, drawing heavily on George Orwell's allegorical novel Animal Farm. Roger Waters, who largely dominated the songwriting, uses the metaphors of different animal classes to represent human society:
Dogs: Represent aggressive, ruthless capitalists and businessmen.
Pigs: Represent the corrupt, authoritarian leaders and politicians.
Sheep: Represent the unquestioning, conformist populace who eventually rise up.
The album features only five tracks, with "Pigs on the Wing" (split into two parts, opening and closing the album) serving as acoustic bookends to the three longer, more complex pieces: "Dogs," "Pigs (Three Different Ones)," and "Sheep."
The Building on the Cover: Battersea Power Station
The iconic building featured prominently on the album cover is Battersea Power Station, a decommissioned coal-fired power station located on the south bank of the River Thames in London.
Here's why it's so significant to the album's artwork:
Architectural Icon: Designed by Giles Gilbert Scott, Battersea Power Station is a colossal Art Deco structure with four distinctive chimneys, making it one of London's most recognizable industrial landmarks. It ceased generating power in 1983.
Symbolism: Roger Waters conceived the idea for the album cover. He saw the power station as a powerful symbol of industrial decay and the dehumanizing aspects of modern society, perfectly aligning with the album's themes of social class and oppression.
The Inflatable Pig ("Algie"): The most memorable element of the cover is the giant inflatable pig (nicknamed "Algie") floating between two of the power station's chimneys. The pig represents the "Pigs" class from the album – the oppressive, corrupt leaders.
The photoshoot, managed by Hipgnosis (Pink Floyd's long-time album cover designers), was notorious. During one session, the pig broke free from its moorings and floated away, causing flights at Heathrow Airport to be disrupted and requiring a police helicopter chase! This event added to the legend of the album cover.
Legacy: The "Animals" cover, with the flying pig over Battersea Power Station, has become one of the most famous and enduring images in rock history. The building itself is now a major real estate development, but its association with Pink Floyd remains strong, with references to the band often found within the revitalized complex.
Animals : The album is a powerful, if sometimes bleak, statement, and its striking visual imagery has cemented its place as a classic in Pink Floyd's celebrated discography.

Era il 5 giugno del 1975, esattamente 48 anni fa.
Durante le sessioni di registrazione di Wish You Were Here,
i Pink Floyd ricevettero negli studi di Abbey Road la visita di uno strano personaggio, obeso, calvo e con l'aria stralunata.
Solo dopo diversi minuti David Gilmour riconobbe in quell'uomo Syd Barret,
il loro amico e compagno di band che si era perso nei meandri della sua stessa mente, del quale non avevano notizie da tempo e al quale stavano dedicando il loro album.
Nello stupore e nella commozione generale gli fecero ascoltare Shine On You Crazy Diamond,

"Atom Heart Mother" is the fifth studio album by the English progressive rock band Pink Floyd
Released in 1970. It's instantly recognizable for its iconic album cover featuring a Holstein cow standing in a pasture, with no text or band name on the front. This simple, striking image has become one of the most famous and enigmatic album covers in rock history.
Here's a breakdown of the album:
Music: "Atom Heart Mother" is a pivotal album in Pink Floyd's discography, marking a transition from their earlier psychedelic sound towards the more progressive and experimental style that would define their later work. The album's centerpiece is the 23-minute title suite, "Atom Heart Mother," a complex and ambitious piece that occupies the entire first side of the original vinyl release. It features orchestral arrangements, experimental soundscapes, and the band's signature blend of rock and classical influences. The second side includes shorter, more conventional songs, including "If," "Fat Old Sun," and "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast."
Album Cover: The cover art was created by the design studio Hipgnosis, who designed many of Pink Floyd's album covers. Storm Thorgerson, one of the founders of Hipgnosis, has said that the cover was a reaction against the band's previous elaborate and psychedelic album art. They wanted something completely different and chose the image of the cow randomly from a book of stock photos. The cow, named Lulubelle III, was photographed in a field near Hertfordshire, England. The lack of any text or band name on the cover was deliberate, adding to the mystery and intrigue.
Reception: "Atom Heart Mother" was a commercial success, reaching number 1 in the UK and number 29 in the US. While critical reception was initially mixed, it has since been reassessed as a significant work in the band's development and a classic of the progressive rock genre. The title suite remains a fan favorite and a staple of their live performances.
Legacy: The "Atom Heart Mother" album cover is one of the most recognizable and parodied images in rock music. It has become synonymous with Pink Floyd and is a testament to the power of simple, striking visual imagery. The album itself is considered a key transitional work in Pink Floyd's discography, bridging their early psychedelic sound with their later progressive masterpieces like "The Dark Side of the Moon" and "Wish You Were Here."
