The "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series at Disney+ has added an unexpected pick to its growing cast.
The new live-action series is based on the hugely successful novels from author Rick Riordan of the same title. We will be seeing YN LN join the series as Rina Velasco, one of the supporting characters of the show.
LN's Rina Velasco is referred to as "the offspring of The Muses, goddesses of the sciences and the arts." Unlike most other demigods, she is born out of the artistic and scientific output of the muses. When the moral ingenuity of humans meets the divine musings of The Muses. Her character is described as a unique allrounder who becomes a mentor figure to our main cast as they embark on their journey.
This will be LN's first on-screen role of her career. LN's experience mostly lies in Broadway, she is known for playing Kim in the Miss Saigon revival on Broadway. LN was nominated for a Tony in 2022 for the same role. She is repped by Salonga/Chien Entertainment and B817 Agency.
Riordan posted on the Meta app, Threads, about this update to the casting saying: "YN was one of the actors we didn't expect to see a tape of but when we saw it, we couldn't help but fall in love with her. She embodies the spirit of Rina so well and is such a kind spirit, we can't wait for you to fall in love with her too! Welcome to the cast, YN!"
The live-action show is based on Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson book series. It tells the fantastical tale of the titular 12-year-old modern demigod (Scobell), who's just coming to terms with his newfound supernatural powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. With help from his friends Grover (Simhadri) and Annabeth (Jeffries), Percy must embark on an adventure of a lifetime to find it and restore order to Olympus.
Production on the show is now underway in Vancouver. Riordan and Jon Steinberg are writing the pilot with James Bobin directing. Steinberg and his producing partner Dan Shotz are overseeing the series and serve as executive producers alongside Bobin, Rick Riordan, Rebecca Riordan, Bert Salke, Monica Owusu-Breen, Jim Rowe, Anders Engström, Jet Wilkinson, and Gotham Group's Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, and D.J. Goldberg. 20th Television is the studio. Salke was formerly the president of Touchstone Television and originally put the show into development.

A/N i truly hope you guys can forgive the horrible editing in the pictures. the article portion is based on (and has some parts that are directly pulled from) this article from variety ! here's some succint information about rina velasco, the PJO character YN LN plays (and is my childhood OC!) - rina velasco, filipino, 18 years old (year younger than luke) - she's an offspring of the muses, not directly a child or daughter, though she may be referred as such - by her being an offspring of the muses, i mean that she was born in the same way athena's children are born. - but in rina's case she's more like a weird conglomeration of each muse. her birth is a rare event, but her mothers are honored as minor goddesses so she stayed in the apollo cabin (connection to music) - rina operates as a guidance figure for the main trio, especially annabeth - she's also luke's love interest, there's a lot of tragicness and doomed romance stuff with those two - and for the sake of everyone, we pretend like the weird i love you from the books didn't happen !

Today's compilation:
25 #1 Hits From 25 Years 1983 R&B / Soul / Girl Groups / Pop-Soul / Disco
Seriously, it's so wild to me that just three years before Motown put out this double-LP that took 25 of their #1 hits from a 25-year period, they released another compilation with the same concept that took 20 #1 hits from a 20-year period; and almost half the tunes between these two releases don't actually overlap at all! To put this in perspective, I don't think there's another record company in America, outside of enormous major labels that have been around for many more decades and have released music across a much broader spectrum of genres, that could put together even one volume of US chart-toppers. But if a single volume consists of roughly 20 to 25 songs, then Motown would need to put out a total of two volumes and change in order to cover every #1 hit that they've ever had! They're just so head-and-shoulders above everyone else.
And while the 20-songs-in-20-years comp put a lot of its focus on the 70s, this one operates chronologically, and starts in 1961 with Motown's first ever #1, the super catchy girl group classic, "Please Mr. Postman," by The Marvelettes. It doesn't then go on to provide every single #1 from the 60s from there, but the album still spends a little less than a third of its tracklist within that decade, which was a critically important part of Motown's history that the prior compilation really seemed to gloss over.
So, again, no obscurities here whatsoever on this thing, but I think this is the most definitive document of Motown's greatest hits that I've ever come across. And if you want even more #1s, you can take this one in tandem with 20/20: Twenty #1 Hits From Twenty Years at Motown too 😊.
Highlights:
The Marvelettes - "Please Mr. Postman" The Supremes - "Baby Love" The Temptations - "My Girl" The Four Tops - "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)" Diana Ross & The Supremes - "You Can't Hurry Love" The Four Tops - "Reach Out (I'll Be There)" Marvin Gaye - "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" The Jackson 5 - "I Want You Back" The Jackson 5 - "ABC" Diana Ross - "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" The Jackson 5 - "I'll Be There" Smokey Robinson & the Miracles - "Tears of a Clown" The Temptations - "Just My Imagination" Marvin Gaye - "What's Going On" Thelma Houston - "Don't Leave Me This Way" Marvin Gaye - "Got to Give It Up (Part 1)" The Temptations - "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" Eddie Kendricks - "Keep On Truckin'" Stevie Wonder - "Superstition" Rick James - "Give It To Me Baby" Stevie Wonder - "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" Marvin Gaye - "Let's Get It On"

WITH YOU [19] A WALKER IN THE ROOM
Daryl Dixon x OC!Charlie Reed
Summary: Charlie and Glenn are watching the barn. The group has shooting lessons with Shane. Charlie opens up to Hershel and shares a moment with Rick.
Warnings: language, thoughts about death
Song: Moondust James Young
A/N: Heloooo :) Are you still with me? Let me know what do you think in the comments. Please like and share. ENJOY AND SEE YOU THURSDAY!
Tumblr media
From the early morning- as they both couldn't sleep- Charlie and Glenn were watching the barn, passing the binoculars to each other. Looking at the condition of the place, Charlie wasn't sure if the construction would hold the Walkers inside. They were here all the time, but just now that she knew about them, she lost the feeling of safety.
Goodbye to the three hours of sleep she was getting every night.
"Could you be more obvious?" they heard a voice. "You tell her everything?" Maggie asked, gesturing towards Charlie with furrowed eyebrows.
"Only about his sex life and walkers living in that barn," Charlie answered a little annoyed by the snappish tone of the girl's voice.
Greene rolled her eyes and dropped a basket full of peaches. "Here, enjoy."
"Are you trying to buy my silence with fruit?" Glenn asked immediately.
"Of course not," Maggie answered. "There's also jerky."
Charlie couldn't bear the tension, so she reached for the fruit and leaned on the tree. "Will you please tell us why your dad has a secret barn full of walkers?
"Yeah. It's creepy." Glenn nodded.
Maggie shushed them.
"You know that right?" the Asian boy asked again.
She shushed them again, but this time she stepped closer to Glenn. "Just trust me on this, okay?"
Then she looked at Charlie, so she waved the hand that was holding the fruit. "My lips are sealed. But he sucks at lying."
"I can't even play poker." Glenn sighed. "We tried. It's too much like lying."
"You have to keep it to yourself." Maggie leaned more and said with a worried expression. "Both of you. You have to. Please."
With that, she just turned away and left them. Charlie didn't understand what was so important. Those creatures could kill them, eat them like a snack, and they were just keeping them like pets? Were they too afraid to kill them?
"We're screwed, Charlie." he sighed, looking at the barn.
"Yeah." she nodded. "Come on, peaches boy."
But Charlie decided to leave Glenn with his serious task alone, and trusting that he would keep his mouth shut, she walked to a tent that was far away from their camp. He was lying on his sleeping bag, leafing through some book, not even reading the pages. As soon as he felt her presence, their eyes met and he placed the book flat on his chest.
"You can read?" Charlie fake gasped and earned a roll of his eyes.
"You are so funny," he said sarcastically. "Andrea gave me this as an apology gift."
"She should let you shoot her in apology," she muttered.
"You are more angry with her than me. It was an accident." Daryl shrugged.
"That wouldn't have happened if she had listened to us for one time," she said annoyed. "And I don't buy this she's traumatized by losing her sister thing that Lori was trying to tell me because everyone lost someone. You lost your brother. And I don't see you running around, shooting people."
Daryl felt strange on the inside as she was getting so worked up over him because he was alive and he was through worse things. It felt odd to have someone to have his back."The first time is free."
"I came to check up on you."
"I don't need a nurse," he answered.
"Oh, I've got all the necessary skills. Just say the word, and I'll be there with my first aid kit and a charming bedside manner," she said and he snorted. "You feel better?"
Daryl looked at her as she sat down in his tent, where previously Andrea was sitting. He didn't want to answer that question, because it was pointless and stupid, so he decided to ask his own."You're not going with them?"
By going with them he meant shooting lessons that Shane and Rick came up with, so everyone could defend themselves.
"I do," she answered. "But before this, I want to ask something."
He nodded. "What's up?"
Charlie leaned in and rested elbows on her knees, taking her thumb in between her teeth. She wasn't too sure about his answer to her question- that she didn't even say out loud, but was thinking about it for a while. Their relations were better, but that didn't mean that she felt confident with just storming here and asking him questions.
"You gonna ask me that or what?"
"Would you like to teach me how to use this?" she asked and pointed at the crossbow with her chin.
He narrowed his eyes and switched his eyes between the weapon and the girl. "Why?"
"I think that woman should be able to defend herself."
"You are good with guns, I heard," Daryl said.
"We can't always use guns," she answered. "I thought you would understand."
And he did. However, he knew for a fact that she didn't need his help. She might have fooled everyone, but Daryl knew that Charlie was a strong woman who was capable of everything she wanted. So if she wanted to learn how to use a crossbow she would just take one and learn, she didn't need him. The ask she just made, was just a pretext and he was really confused.
"We will see," he answered. "Once I feel better and we find Sophia, I will think about it."
"Great." she smiled.
"I didn't say yes!"
"But your eyes did!"
"Just try to keep up."
"Oh, I'll keep up, all right. You'll see," she winked at him and left the tent with a smile plastered on her face, she found herself back in their little camp where she saw a little gathering. When she saw Lori's face it was clear as a day that Carl did something bad and they were talking it through. Why did she know that whatever he did was bad? Because it was Carl. He was destroying whatever he touched because he thought he wanted. Also, he was sitting on a bench as if he was waiting for a sentence.
"How the hell did this happen?" Lori asked.
"Well, it's my fault," Dale said with a guilty expression. "I let him into the RV. He said he wanted a walkie, that you sent him for one."
If Lori's eyes could open even wider, then they did as she looked at her husband in an accusatory gesture. "So on top of everything else, he lied. What's he thinking?"
Charlie looked at the boy, who was looking down, and then at the adults. She really missed a whole chapter when she was gone for ten minutes top. "What you did do, Carl?"
"I stole a gun," he whispered ashamed.
"You did what now?" she furrowed her eyebrows.
"I wanted..." See? That's when Charlie stopped listening to his words because he made her point. The boy was just out of bed after he got shot, and he was already causing trouble because he wanted...
"He wants to learn how to shoot. He asked me to teach him." Shane said. "Now, this is none of my business, but I'm happy to do it. It's your call."
Carl stood up from his spot and walked up to his mother with a guilty but firm look in his eyes. "I'm not gonna play with it, Mom. It's not a toy. I'm sorry I disappointed you, but I want to look for Sophia and I want to defend our camp. I can't do that without a gun."
"Shane's the best instructor I know." Rick tried to convince his wife. "I've seen him teach kids younger than Carl."
"Mom, I don't want to die as a boy."
Charlie looked at him and then at Lori, and wished she didn't exist in that moment. She froze in her spot and tried not to breathe, hoping that Rick didn't look at her and wouldn't connect the dots that she was the owner of those wise words. The mother walked up to her kid and held his face. "You will take this seriously and you will behave responsibly. And if I hear from anyone in this camp that you're not living up to our expectations..."
"He won't let you down." Rick interrupted his wife.
"Yeah." Carl nodded and then he turned to face Charlie, showing her two thumbs up.
She rolled her eyes.
Shooting a gun was like riding a bike. You just don't forget how you do. For the first time, Charlie was holding a gun when she was there, it was a gun made out of plastic of course. When she was getting older, her father corrected her posture and told her how she should grip the handle. Then finally when she was around the age of eight, he took her to shoot a real gun. That's why it was nice to review this ability, but she didn't need to practice like everyone else.
"Don't be discouraged," said Shane. "It's probably been a while since you did that. It's okay. You'll hit the target eventually."
Charlie spread her arm to Rick and he immediately knew what she was asking for, so he placed the binoculars in her hand so she could give it to Shane. "Who said I'm discouraged?"
The two men exchanged their looks. "Try this one. It's heavy."
"It doesn't matter, does it?" Charlie took the gun from Shane.
"You get better balance, twice the rounds."
Then she pointed the gun at the target and hit it without the problem. "You better take this before Andrea sees this. She won't let me live."
Charlie was just standing on the side, ready to leave, taking in the surroundings. Rick was encouraging Carl and Lori was keeping an eye on her son. Andrea was moving her hips as she was walking away from Shane in a flirtatious manner.
"How does it feel to hold a real gun again?" Shane asked when he came up to her.
"Like a birthday." she smiled.
"Actually, I'm pretty impressed."
"I know," she answered. "I saw it in your eyes."
He smiled and looked down. "We're passing each other lately."
"Yeah. Well, we all have our chores." she shrugged.
"You want to come back to the farm with me?" Shane asked. "We could catch up."
Charlie looked at Andrea who was closely watching them and then at Lori, who was doing the same way, but just more discreetly. She didn't want to make two enemies at once, besides Shane changed since they came here on the farm. He became cold distant and skeptical of everything. She suspected that was because of the lack of power he had.
"Pass," she answered. "I'll come back with them."
House of Greens was different from what she knew a home was. The family was close with each other and you could feel it in the air. From the entrance, something enhanced the guest and filled their hearts, like love was sprayed and easy to get. Her home was quiet and cold. There was no love in the air or even in the hearts of the members of her family. That's why she felt so awkward around Hershel or Patricia or his daughters, and maybe the atmosphere between them, made her think about the nostalgic past more than before.
"May I interrupt?" Charlie knocked on the doorframe.
"Is something wrong with your friend?" Hershel asked.
"No. God, no," she said. "I just wanted to talk. Do you have a moment?"
The old man looked out of the window as if to show her that at this time of the day, there was nothing to do. "It's not like I have somewhere to be. Please, come in."
Charlie entered his room and sat down on a chair in the corner. She was looking around nervously as if she wasn't sure if she should even be there.
"I know you're not sure about us," she said. "And I know that you want us out."
"Hmm," he looked at her. "Are you surprised? They never thought about shooting before."
"I understand. You're the boss here, I get it," she said. "It's your house, your rules. My dad raised me and my brothers with the same thought." Charlie looked at him, still standing. "But those people are good. And they need a place in your home, just a small place even on the floor."
"Is any of those people related to you?" he narrowed his eyes.
"No," she shook her head. "I met them maybe a month after the outbreak."
"Then why do you care about them so much?"
"Glenn helped me out of Atlanta and he didn't even know me," she answered. "He took me in. Invited me to their camp, and he believed that I could be trusted. And he saved my life. They all did. I was alone and they took care of me."
Hershel nodded his head, still looking at her with this strange look of his. He perched on his bed and leaned in her direction. "May I ask you a question?"
"Of course."
"Why do you want to stay here?"
Charlie felt triggered by the question. The answer was hard to say out loud, and nobody heard this story before. She was lying to those people, trying to cover the past that she was ashamed of. But she couldn't lie to Hershel, that was out of the question. He was the boss and she wanted to stay under his roof, but to make this possible, she had to be honest.
She sighed. "I just want to protect people when I can."
"What do you mean?"
"I made all the wrong choices I could," she confessed. "So now I would like to have my redemption."
If she could turn back time, she would do everything differently. What she would have changed? First, she would pack up her stuff and run when there was time for that. She would take her family and drive them as far from the cities as possible. Second thing, she would have never recorded that statement. She would tell the truth somewhere, she would stop people from coming there.
"I'm a bad person, Hershel," she added. "So...Please...Let me save the people outside your house. Just so I could redeem myself. Please."
Hershel nodded his head.
"We all make mistakes. That's a human nature," he said. "Maybe that was needed, so you could change and help people. You lost your family, but maybe you can gain a new one. And this time, you could do something."
Charlie wiped the tears that fell from her eyes away.
"And you are not a bad person," he said and touched her hand.
But she was. She never showed even a bit of heart to her younger brother, because that's how she wanted to prepare him for the real world. She was self-centered and that led to the moment when she was alive and everyone she cared about was dead. Because she cared about her family. Maybe that should be enough sign to end her life and reunite with them- if anything like an afterlife existed.
It was dark already when she was coming back from Greene's house. She felt her heart thumping in her chest, it was stopping and starting to beat each time she heard even the slightest rustle in the grass. She didn't see any Walkers around, but what if the one in the barn found a way out? There could be a lot of things hiding in the darkness- like a cop that came back from the dead.
She was almost in her tent when she saw a person sitting under one of the trees. "Oh...sorry. I didn't want to interrupt you."
"It's okay," he said, looking at her. "You want to sit?"
Charlie stopped for a moment, thinking about the answer. She didn't know him, he was a stranger basically, but something in his eyes told her that he needed to talk with someone who didn't know him.
So she sat down at a considerable distance from Rick Grimes, a man that was a mystery for now.
"You helped Lori with Carl in the quarry?"
"I took care of him and Sophia," she said. "But I don't think I would call it a help."
"The first night he couldn't keep quiet about you." Rick smiled, looking at her. "I think you're close just because of his stories."
Ouch.
Little did he know that Charlie absolutely despised his kid. If she could leave him somewhere in the woods...she would do it. That was the truth, she wasn't a perfectionist and she wasn't Carl's friend. So to silence her guilty thoughts she decided to defend herself.
"I think you should probably know," she said. "The words about dying as a boy? I said them to him."
Rick looked at her guilty expression with a face that Charlie just couldn't read. "And you're right."
She furrowed her eyebrows.
"In a world like this...everyone should defend themselves and don't expect someone to do it for them."
"Lori wasn't happy with that."
"Lori is a mother. You will see once you have your own kids."
"I think, one pregnant woman is enough," she said without thinking. "Oh...sorry."
He nodded his head again, looking at the ground deep in his thoughts. "I should be happy about the kid," he said. "When we found out about Carl I was walking five meters above the ground."
Charlie smiled together with him at the memory.
"But now it's harder. Considering the circumstances," he added. "You think it's mine or Shane's?"
If Charlie had something in her mouth she would spit it or choke on it. What the hell was going on in this household? So Rick knew about the affair? Did Lori tell him? Maybe Shane did it? What if Rick didn't know and he was just looking for a confirmation? What should she say?
So she stayed with good old: "Um...I have no idea what are you talking about."
"Come on," he said and leaned his head on the tree. "I knew it for a very long time. She told me about it today, but I knew."
"You were a hell of a good cop." she smiled and brought a smile to his lips. "But I think it doesn't matter."
Grimes looked at her.
"As long as the baby is loved, I guess," she added. "And it will be loved."
Rick tightened his lips and nodded his head. He touched her wrist gently, but when she didn't move it away he squeezed it. And at that moment Charlie felt sorry for him because he was just a guy. Not a man from the steel, not a hero she thought of him. He was just a guy with a big heart.
That's why she touched his hand and patted it in a supportive gesture.

A-T-3 213 Puff Daddy Samples
Here are some of the tracks from 1983 Sean Combs (and Chucky Thompson) has sampled on his productions. Most of of P Diddy's productions are from the 1990's so at the time the tracks from 1983 were roughly between 10 and 15-years-old, I remember they were definitely considered 'oldies' at the time, but a contemporary equivalent would be using Hold On, We're Going Home by Drake, Get Lucky by Daft Punk, Low by Flo Rida, or Milkshake by Kelis (didn't Beyoncé do this?)
Juicy Fruit - Mtume it's been sampled a lot a lot, Puffy used it on Juicy for The Notorious B.I.G. (1994). It's well documented Setsasonic's Talkin' All That Jazz is a response to James Mtume's rant on Bob Slade’s The Week In Review on NYC’s KISS-FM calling out ‘lazy’ Hip-Hop producers that never learned to play instruments, opting instead to take up ‘sampling’. Describing them as the “Glorification of mediocrity“
youtube
All Night Long - Mary Jane Girls It's been sampled more than Juicy Fruit, Puffy puts it to use on Mary J Blige's Mary Jane (All Night Long) (1994) taking music and vocal hooks. Mary Jane Girls were, of course, Rick James' girl group and All Night Long is by far their biggest hit. Kevie (Waterbed) Kev of the Furious 5 does a fun cover All Night Long (Waterbed), also from 1983
youtube
Stay With Me - DeBarge this must be one of Puffy's favourites as he uses it more than once, the biggie is One More Chance/Stay With Me (Remix) by Biggie featuring Faith Evans (1994)
youtube
Between The Sheets - The Isley Bothers I've shared this already here. It's one of those tracks you know but don't necessarily know who it's by or what it's called, it's been sampled even more than All Night Long, it's probably best known for being the music to Big Poppa by The Notorious B.I.G (1994)
New Edition release their debut album Candy Girl in 1983 and Diddy samples two ballads off of it Jealous Girl which becomes Jealous Guy by Mase (1997) and Is This The End which is used for P Diddy's own track of the same name. The prepubescent New Edition were produced by Arthur Baker and released on his Streetwise label, songs were written and co-produced by Maurice Starr and his brother Michael Jonzun (of The Jonzun Crew)
Sean Combs has never been afraid to use the biggest samples wholesale, sometimes they're more like remixes than samples. Here are some of the pop hits from 1983 Puffy has used: Every Breath You Take - Police becomes the tribute/cash in I'll Be Missing You (1997), Let's Dance - David Bowie becomes P Diddy's Been Around The World (1997), Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) - The Eurythmics is Nobody Do It Better Than Us by Lil' Kim... and in honourable fashion of doing a Les Dawson on a hip hop track lines from All Night Long - Lionel Richie and Break My Stride - Matthew Wilder get sung on Feelin’ So Good by Jennifer Lopez and Can't Nobody Hold Me Down by P. Diddy
Gotta Make It Up to You - Angela Bofill this one is a little more obscure 1983 quiet stormer from Angela Bofill. It's used to great effect on Faith Evan's Life Will Pass You By (1998)
youtube
A Garden Of Peace - Lonnie Liston Smith a solemn spiritual piece from Lonnie Liston Smith becomes the makeup song Rain by Total (1998)
youtube
Belladonna - Andreas Vollenweider this new age track is expertly flipped for I Got A Story To Tell by Biggie on his Life After Death album (1997)
youtube
There's three final tracks Sean Combs has used I wan't to feature in their own posts, the first is Transformation by Nona Hendryx which Puffy uses on Notorious B.I.G.'s posthumous eponymous track (1999) and Nothing Move But The Money by Mic Geronimo (1997), then there's Another Man - Barbara Mason used on Biggie's Another (1997), and White Lines - Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel which is something like a Phenomenon by LL Cool J

James Ambrose Johnson Jr. (February 1, 1948 – August 6, 2004) known by his stage name Rick James, was a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. Born and raised in Buffalo, he began his musical career in his teen years. He was in various bands before entering the Navy and to avoid being drafted he deserted to Toronto, where he formed the rock band the Mynah Birds, who signed a recording deal with Motown Records. His career with the group halted after military authorities discovered his whereabouts and convicted him to a one-year prison term related to the draft charges. After being released, he moved to California where he started a variety of rock and funk groups. After forming the locally popular Stone City Band in his hometown, he finally found success as a recording artist after signing with Motown's Gordy Records, releasing the album Come Get It!, which produced the hits "You & I" and "Mary Jane." He released his most successful album, Street Songs, which included career-defining hits such as "Give It to Me Baby" and "Super Freak," the latter song becoming his biggest crossover single, mixing elements of funk, disco, rock, and new wave. He was known for his soulful ballads such as "Fire & Desire" and "Ebony Eyes." He had a successful career as a songwriter and producer for other artists including Teena Marie, the Mary Jane Girls, The Temptations, Eddie Murphy, and Smokey Robinson. He married Tanya Hijazi (m1997–2002) and Kelly Misener (1974–1979). He had four children. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CoILPgRLsgd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

H.W.A. (Hoes With Attitude) was one of the most controversial all-female rap groups of the early 1990s, known for their provocative lyrics. A rare fact about H.W.A. is that Ty James, who temporarily replaced Baby Girl in the group, was actually the daughter of the legendary Rick James, adding a unique connection to music royalty during the group's lineup changes. The group, formed in 1989 and disbanded in 1994, briefly reunited in 2012. Their association with Eazy-E's Ruthless Records helped them gain visibility in the West Coast rap scene despite their relatively short-lived career.

Mini Book Review Dump
Ahahaha so as with all things I'm hopeless at keeping up with updating stuff. Too busy reading to blog about reading, you know how it is. In the time I've been forgetting to post I've read the following books:
The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern - I really really liked it; it felt (now bear with me here) like a kind of spiritual successor to Alice in Wonderland. Not with the plot or the characters, but just in the sense of wonder and exploration it evoked.
Slither's Tale by Joseph Delaney, book 12 of The Wardstone Chronicles - It was weird to follow a completely different character to the ones the rest of the series focuses on, but it was interesting to see a new place and meet new species of dark creature. And Grimalkin showed up so I'm a happy gal.
The Sisters of Reckoning by Charlotte Nicole Davis, book 2 of The Good Luck Girls duology - I cannot actually express how much I loved this book without giving away the plot in major ways. Just know that it was a perfect sequel in that all the things that you wish would have happened in the previous book happened in this one, and it was glorious. I love it. I'm going to have to actually buy myself copies of these so I can have them forever (I got both from the library so don't own them... yet)
The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan, book 1 of the Heroes of Olympus series - This one is a re-read; I originally read them as they were coming out and just kinda felt like revisiting them since I only read them through the once. I, like everyone else, just adore Riordan's writing and characters, and you don't need me to tell you it was good.
Near the Bone by Christina Henry - Honestly not her best work. I was kind of disappointed; the characters felt a bit flat, there was a lot of repetitiveness to the writing that was more annoying than anything, and the ending was very sudden and didn't really give much closure or any answers. If you're new to Henry's books, don't start with this one (start with Lost Boy).
The Fever Code by James Dashner, book 5 (or 0.5, or 2, depending on how you like to order series) of The Maze Runner series - I would say this is the worst book in the series, but that's only because all the others are so good. This one was decent, but we ultimately knew the fate of the characters and WICKED from the previous books so a lot of the stakes just didn't feel real. We knew Thomas couldn't be harmed or die because he needs to survive for book 1 to happen. Still, it was very enjoyable, and I think if you read it before The Maze Runner then you'd enjoy it a lot more.
The Foundling by Stacy Halls - There was so much nothing that happened in this book oh my goodness. Bess's parts were good, because things actually happened in them, like her working and trying to get her daughter back, and then obviously the escape and all that jazz, but when it's Alexandra's pov you may as well just nap through it honestly that woman was so boring.
Fair Rosaline by Natasha Solomons - Another letdown honestly; I know people are entitled to interpret literature however they want, but 'Romeo is a paedo' is... a bit of a stretch to me. Thing is, I don't think I would have minded if it was done well, but it just... wasn't. I spent most of the book counting the pages until it'd be over.
So yeah, I've been busy, just not busy posting lol. Also work has been a bit manic because it's the summer holidays so I'm running children's arts and crafts groups and those are very mentally draining to me. Hopefully I can post more now though if I put my mind to it!

There are very few acts in Hip-Hop that have had the run of hits that Salt N Pepa enjoyed in the 1980s and 1990s. Salt and Pep, along with DJ Spinderella, helped usher in a wave of female rappers, but beyond their status as trailblazers, these rap queens have a remarkable body of work. Alongside their hitmaking producer Hurby "Luv Bug" Azor, Salt-N-Pepa helped define the sound of an era, with an image that stretched from their iconic Dapper Dan jackets and doorknocker earrings, to Dolce & Gabbana designer outfits and glam photo shoots.
They have so many hits, and more than a few dope album cuts. We narrowed down the 25 dopest songs from Salt-N-Pepa.
#26
"BACKYARD" - PEBBLES FEAT. SALT-N-PEPA [BONUS SONG]
Our BONUS SONG pick is a celebrated classic guest spot! Here, R&B songstress Pebbles gave the ladies a warning on one of her best new jack singles, and Salt-N-Pepa lend an assist. Don't forget: she'll take yo' man.
#25
"HOLD ON" FEAT. KIRK FRANKLIN, SOUNDS OF BLACKNESS
Salt's spirituality was always there, even if it wasn't always evident in Salt-N-Pepa's biggest hits. This collaboration with gospel superstars Kirk Franklin and Sounds Of Blackness spoke to the religiosity she would embrace in the 2000s.
#24
"AIN'T NUTHIN' BUT A SHE THING"
An MTV fixture in the mid-1990s, this is Salt-N-Pepa at their most anthemic, championing "girl power" and representing for the ladies at the height of their career.
#23
"INDEPENDENT"
The final single from Blacks Magic is an early example of Salt's talents as a songwriter and producer. The song also features a vocal appearance from R&B star, Sybil.

#22
"I LIKE IT LIKE THAT"
Early Salt-N-Pepa was at their best when getting the party started. A dancefloor-ready album cut from A Salt With A Deadly Pepa, this track is a TikTok craze waiting to happen.
#21
"DOPER THAN DOPE"
Bob James is one of Hip-Hop's most beloved jazzmen, and "Nautilus" has been flipped a bajillion different ways. But one of the most underrated is this uber-cool track from Blacks Magic.
#20
"CHICK ON THE SIDE"
This Pointer Sisters-referencing track is a standout on Hot, Cool & Vicious; and it was an early showcase for the ghostwriting of a then-unknown Kool G Rap.
#19
"TRAMP"
Salt and Pep take on another oldie but goodie. The 60s soul standard, popularized by Otis Redding and Carla Thomas, is a jumping off point for this take down of a sleazy womanizer.
#18
"GIDDY UP"
Salt-N-Pepa showed love to Rick James on this underrated single from Brand New. With the ladies in full sex vamp mode, it was one of their last major videos of the 1990s.
#17
"YOU SHOWED ME"
Salt-N-Pepa has always had a love for 60s pop songs, and this remake of the 1969 hit from The Byrds is one of their most popular Blacks Magic-era tracks.
#16
"HEAVEN & HELL"
The final single from the blockbuster Very Necessary saw S-N-P going for street tales. One of the most "hood" tracks they ever released, it wasn't as big as the album's other hits, but showed the girls could get a little gritty.
#15
"R U READY" FEAT. RUFUS MOORE
The group revisited one of it's earliest hits, with much flossier results. The lead single for what would be Salt-N-Pepa's final album to date was an infectious reimagining of "My Mic Sounds Nice" for the "Shiny Suit Era," with an assist from Rufus Moore.
#14
"SHAKE YOUR THANG" FEAT. E.U.
There was a time when Salt-N-Pepa was seen as the raunchy downfall of popular music. Salt, Pep and Spin poked a little fun at their notorious reputation with this cover/interpolation of the Isley Bros classic that also featured go-go legends E.U.
#13
"BLACKS' MAGIC"
The title track to Salt-N-Pepa's third album highlighted just how focused the women were on this particular project and how much creative control they'd gained. Featuring Spin on production and some of the group's most pro-Black subject matter, it's one of their most underrated moments.
#12
"THE SHOWSTOPPA (IS STUPID FRESH)"
The song that started it all. Hurby "Luv Bug" Azor recruited his girlfriend Cheryl "Salt" James and her best friend Sandy "Pepa" Denton to record this answer to Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick's classic "The Show." Add a synth line from 'Revenge Of The Nerds,' and the rest is history.
#11
"CHAMPAGNE"
The main single from the soundtrack for the largely forgotten Adam Sandler/Damon Wayans buddy cop flick 'Bulletproof,' this Ohio Players-sampling track was a glasses-in-the-air girls night out anthem.
#10
"MY MIC SOUNDS NICE"
One of Salt-N-Pepa's early signature songs, with a hook that's been revisited numerous times throughout Hip-Hop. It is also another showcase for Hurby's go-go influences.
#9
"I'LL TAKE YOUR MAN"
One of Salt-N-Pepa's most iconic songs, it's brash and in-your-face. The song has become something of a Hip-Hop standard, revisited by everyone from Mia X to City Girls.
#8
"DO YOU WANT ME"
The third single from Blacks Magic kept the album on the charts for almost two years. Featuring only Salt's rapping, and some of the group's most inspired production courtesy of Hurby, it's an all-timer.
#7
"SHOOP"
This megahit helped push Very Necessary to five-times platinum, and it was the brainchild of Pepa herself. With Pepa serving as the song's primary writer and Salt as producer, it stands as a creative high-water mark for a group that fought hard for some independence.
#6
"LET'S TALK ABOUT SEX"
A sex anthem at the height of AIDS hysteria and safe sex messaging, it became one of the biggest hits of Salt-N-Pepa's career and still stands as a 90s anthem.
#5
"NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS"
With this brazen Grammy-winning track, Salt, Pepa and Spin made it clear that sex positivity was the cause of the day. Before Lil Kim and Foxy took it to another level, S-N-P made a stand for female sexuality and staying out of grown folks' business.
#4
"GET UP (EVERYBODY)"
The video is like a Hip-Hop 'West Side Story,' the Parliament-sampling piano line is catchy as hell, and Salt-N-Pepa delivered one of their all-time best singles with this dark groove.
#3
"EXPRESSION"
After her breakup with Hurby, Salt wanted more than just romantic freedom. The rapper broke out as a producer, taking the reins and crafting this track, a major hit single for Salt-N-Pepa which set off Blacks Magic.
#2
"WHATTA MAN"
There are very few songs as big, as inescapable and as undeniably 90s as the second single from Very Necessary. The En Vogue hook is classic, and the video features an uncredited cameo from Tupac Shakur.
#1
"PUSH IT"
The dancefloor anthem to end all dancefloor anthems. The synth line that sold so much spandex. Those jackets. That hook. This is one of the most recognized Hip-Hop songs of all time, and a timeless party starter. The song may have freaked out parents in the late 1980s, but now it's heard everywhere from wedding receptions to company retreats.

New BBGirls will sample RICK JAMES??? BUFFALO BORN AND RAISED RICK JAMES???
I s2g. Between the redebut teasers dropping a year to the day I saw BBGirls in concert, and now an homage to a musician from my hometown, the universe is shouting out and apologizing to me, specifically, for making me think my favorite girl group was disbanding the same year everything else in my life has fallen apart. The music gods were like, "We see you. We know you're mourning your soulmate cat, your dream job turned out to be an underpaid nightmare, you cannot pay your bills, your medications are no longer staving off your chronic illness, and student loans are coming back, but--BUT--you WILL still have brand new BBGirls bops to help you dance your way through the apocalypse. We will not take that away from you too, Lee Ann, we promise."
