Part 2: The Rescue of Rachel Cohen and her Children by Princess Alice of Greece: "The Greek royal family had been well acquainted with the family of Haimaki Cohen, a Jew and former member of Parliament, from Tricala, in northern Greece. In 1941, when Germany invaded Greece, the family fled to Athens – then still under Italian rule, where the anti-Jewish policy was more moderate. However the period of relative (safety) lasted only until September 1943, when following Italy's surrender to the Allies, the Germans occupied Athens and the hunt for Jews began. By that time Haimaki Cohen had died. His widow, Rachel, and her five children were looking for a place of refuge. The family's four sons wanted to cross to Egypt, and join with the Greek government in exile that was in Cairo. But the trip proved too hazardous for Rachel and their sister. Princess Alice (Prince Philip's mom) heard of the family's desperate situation and offered to shelter Rachel and her daughter, Tilde, at her home. I finally watched the Zookeeper's Wife. This movie was amazing. The real couple was remarkable. Jan and Antonina Żabiński really went above and beyond to help their fellow man. All of the people who put themselves and their families in danger to help their Jewish brothers and sisters are incredible. The higher you go, the harder it is to find those who can tell you the truth. So happy to hear this year’s World Press Freedom Day is themed: “Speaking Truth To Power”. Kids hate parents who feed them vegetables but love those who give them candy. Too many leaders are destroyed because they surround themselves with people who’ll serve them candies, chocolate and soda. And once they get addicted to this, to serve them veggies is to risk your very life or friendship or privilege. This is why Africa struggles. The praise singers drown out all truth with their their loud gong gongs. This is why very promising businesses implode. It is why lots of people with great talent never realize their full potential. The Cohen family had fled Thessaloniki at the outset of the German invasion, and were forced to leave their prior hiding spot. Three Cohen sons reached Egypt, via Turkey, in December 1943, and then joined Greek forces fighting in the Middle East. In the meantime, Rachel Cohen found refuge in the residence of Princess Alice for over a year with her daughter, Tilde. Rachel's son, Michel, joined them soon after as well.⁠”

During #WW2, Chiune Sugihara & Yukiko Sugihara (his wife) both helped Jews escape Nazi-occupied Lithuania - saving thousands of lives. "Chiune Sugihara was a Japanese government official who served as vice consul for the Japanese Empire in Lithuania. In 1940, during WW2, Sugihara helped some 6,000 Jews flee Europe by issuing transit visas to them so that they could travel through Japanese territory, risking his job and his family's lives. (He wrote visas for 18-20 hours every day, continuing to sign them through the window of a train and throw them to the crowd as he fled Lithuania.) The fleeing Jews were refugees from German-occupied Western Poland and Soviet-occupied Eastern Poland, as well as residents of Lithuania. A few decades after the war, in 1985, the State of Israel honored Sugihara as one of the Righteous Among the Nations for his actions... The year 2020 was "The Year of Chiune Sugihara" in Lithuania. It has been estimated as many as 100,000 people alive today are the descendants of the recipients of Sugihara visas."
