#HappyWomensDay!π Let us celebrate women's literature and history today and every day!ππ --- In college, in my "The Norton Anthology Of Literature By Women," I treasured a beautiful tapestry of many women writers' works, poems, essays, letters, or excerpts of works. I loved Anne Bradstreet's poetry, Abigail Adams' letters (especially "Remember the Ladies"), Phillis Wheatley's poetry, Sojourner Truth's courageous story & speeches (especially "Ain't I a Woman?"), & Elizabeth Barrett Browning's poetry. I treasured Harriet Beecher Stowe's courage, Harriet Jacobs' story of resilience while escaping slavery, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, & Florence Nightingale. And I enjoyed Charlotte Bronte, George Elliot (her pen name), Emily Bronte, & Emily Dickinson. My favorite was Alice Walker's "In Search of Our Mother's Gardens." I, also, read Virginia Wolf's "A Room of One's Own" and many more authors, poets, & writers who broadened my literary horizons. I definitely recommend this book that covers a multitude of women writers and writing styles from past eras to the recent Modern Era (20th century).π π·(Copyright of my #bookreview & photo: #Inknscroll)π (In college, I read most of these two anthologies. For #BlackHistoryMonth & for the love of #books:ππ --- In college, in my "Norton Anthology of African-American Literature," I enjoyed a beautiful mosaic of many African-American writers' works, poems, essays, letters, or excerpts of works. I loved so many of the Spirituals (Christian, African-American hymns), Phillis Wheatley's poetry, Sojourner Truth's courageous story & speeches (especially "Ain't I a Woman?"), Frederick Douglas' fearlessness and fortitude in his memoir, Booker T. Washington's "Out of Slavery," W. E. B. DuBois' "The Souls of Black Folks," Martin Luther King Jr.'s powerful, eloquent writings, & many of Langston Hughes' poems. I enjoyed Harriet Jacobs' story of resilience while escaping slavery in her memoir, Alice Dunbar Nelson's poetry, & Jean Toomer's "Cane." I, also, read works by Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, & many others. One of my most favorite Langston Hughes' poems is "Mother to Son." I definitely recommend this book; it covers a multitude of African-American writers from Pre-1700s through the Modern era (20th century). #PostWW2: βA World Made New: Eleanor Roosevelt and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,β Mary Ann Glendon.πππ #Goodreads review: βUnafraid to speak her mind and famously tenacious in her convictions, Eleanor Roosevelt was still mourning the death of FDR when she was asked by President Truman to lead a controversial commission, under the auspices of the newly formed United Nations, to forge the worldβs first international bill of rights.β βA World Made Newβ is the dramatic and inspiring story of the remarkable group of men and women from around the world who participated in this historic achievement and gave us the founding document of the modern human rights movement. Spurred on by the horrors of the Second World War and working against the clock in the brief window of hope between the armistice and the Cold War, they grappled together to articulate a new vision of the rights that every man and woman in every country around the world should share, regardless of their culture or religion.β βA landmark work of narrative history based in part on diaries and letters to which Mary Ann Glendon, an award-winning professor of law at Harvard University, was given exclusive access, βA World Made Newβ is the first book devoted to this crucial turning point in Eleanor Rooseveltβs life, and in world history. (Finalist for the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award)βπ(#Goodreads review; my photo: #inknscroll)π (My Mom gave this special book to me last Christmas; the month of December is always #UniversalHumanRightsMonth. Many #VeteransDay Blessings... Thank you to all who served! #HappyVeteransDay!πΉ I once heard a veteran say: "Courage comes from love." This is such a profound truth - spoken simply and perfectly. For this Palm Sunday evening, from "The Sound of Music," I have chosen the strong, beautiful scripture: βI lift up my eyes to the hills - where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.β (Psalm 121: 1-2) . I had this scripture on a poster in my dorm room in college, and my Mom told me how she had chose the same scripture in her dorm in college, also. We love it, and we hope you had a special Palm Sunday in the midst of everything. During this Holy Week, we will continue to keep everyone in Ukraine and Eastern Europe in our prayers, especially the orphans, the refugees who are mostly women and children, civilians, doctors, nurses, and first responders. And to those who lost family members or friends, you are always in our hearts and in our deepest prayers.ππ (My writing: #Inknscroll; Photo: Pinterest. "The Sound of Music" is airing tonight on ABC (check your local listings); it is my favorite movie of all time!π π π I have loved this movie since I was about 5 years old! I used to know all the lyrics of the songs by heart. When my mom was growing up, she actually got to see the movie when it was released in theaters in 1965. The nuns from her Christian Catholic school took her class, as well as several other classes to the theater. Her nuns were so proud, and, afterwards, back in the classroom, they discussed "The Sound of Music" in detail. I always loved hearing my mom recall her childhood memory. This beloved movie shall always be our favorite!π (My writing & my photo: #Inknscroll. "All the Gallant Men: An American Sailor's Firsthand Account of Pearl Harbor," by Donald Stratton (with Ken Gire).π On Dec. 7th, 1941, Imperial Japan attacked Pearl Harbor early one Sunday morning almost three weeks before Christmas. During the Pearl Harbor attack, Joe George saved six men, including this author Donald Stratton, by throwing them a rope from his ship, the Vestal. It was tethered alongside the USS Arizona on that horrific day. George courageously went against his captain's orders to save these men. His captain was terrified that the Vestal would be destroyed by the USS Arizona that was ablaze. While ignoring the captain's orders, Joe George saved the six men who crossed his rope hand-over-hand between the ships with flaming oil burning on top of the water below them. Afterwards, Donald Stratton, who was one of the rescued men, had to recover & heal from his burns, and, then, he resiliently returned to fight in the Pacific at the end of WW2. It is an inspiring, amazing memoir of rescue, heroism, & resilience that I recommend. (Also, there is "Lifeline," a documentary produced by Tim Gray, (that I want to see) that remembers the courage of Joe George.)
