Naruto Modern Fantasy AU - Bijuu & Patrons

Order and Chaos are two of the oldest divinities and are responsible for the creation of the systems that exist within the Nexus (my world). Respectively, they're famously known for the creation of the Order of Angels & Life (Order) and Hell & Death (Chaos). Other achievements include the Seven Heavenly Virtues and the Seven Sins (Partially out of commission).

At an early part in their life, Order and Chaos formed an understanding relationship that developed into romantic feelings. The result of that romance and their union were the bijuu, their nine (related) children. Very soon after Shukaku was created, they separated and began their long-standing and bitter feud. In addition to their together children, they each have their own offspring, the Goddess of Life and Creation & the God of the Dead (prev the God of the Dead, Death and Decay; alt title as King of the Dead).

In the older days, each Bijuu was worshipped and had devoted followers because they were so important, and at the time were the only minor gods around. Eventually, after the creation of the New Gods, the Bijuu lost relevance and were in danger of fading away. A deal was struck so that they could maintain their form and power but they had to have a patron that they fused their soul with. In rare cases, the patrons are willing participants who offer themselves in exchange for help. In most cases, the patron is an unwilling sacrifice, pushed by devoted followers (or power-hungry men) who want to keep their god alive. In the very special case of Mito Uzumaki who offers herself to keep Kurama alive by making a deal that she'll honor his wishes in exchange for power and safety,,, she absolutely does not follow through. This builds up decades of resentment, especially when he is passed down to Kushina who does the same, which starts off his rocky relationship with Naruto.

In another very special case, Rin, who is forcibly made a patron to Isobu, dies within the early stages of his soul intertwining with hers. Later she is resurrected, as the initial soul intertwining process was botched, and Isobu and Rin's souls are now one in the same. Meaning that instead of switching out consciousnesses like a regular patron and god can do, they share it. After the resurrection, Rin also displays physical features of Isobu such as red sclera and protruding spikes.

Patrons receive their patron god's powers and abilities in exchange for either sacrifices or completing quests/tasks, often they're centered around the patron god's title. For example, Matatabi requires Yugito to exorcise and guide spirits/ghosts to the afterlife. In Killer B's case, him and Gyuuki are just vibing. Gyuuki has a historically good relationship with B's family and all of his patrons volunteered willingly, so he freely exchanges his power. Fuu was unwilling sacrificed, but thankfully Chomei adores her enough to provide her power for protection, even helping her leave her followers.

[ You ever think about that fact that, for Kuwabara, killing demons is arguably the morally correct thing to do? In spite of the fact that he rarely strikes the killing blow, he is technically protecting his species by doing so. He is also the only one who actually volunteered for the job.

[ Meanwhile, Hiei's involvement in the Spirit Detective saga is just straight up murder. It's certainly a reflection on Reikai's priorities that they are willing to claim Hiei as one of their own for a time, and take credit for his involvement in Yusuke's Spirit Detective career, but the fact that Hiei does his job by killing really doesn't seem to bother anyone. Hiei would much rather take the credit for those murders himself than be labeled a traitor, but that's not going to stop him from doing it anyway.

I guess it’s also because the time has reduced my memory of the plot to dry bullet points of events so I’ve never had the opportunuty to reasses all the nuance

sorry it took a bit of time for me to get to this, an additional apology for how short it came out to be, made it to be where it's more of a drabble, reader is female.

tw: stalking (he watches you sleep), unhealthy obsession, hints of reader possibly having trauma.

just an ordinary human she was, going from home to work, work to home, she was nothing special of the sort, she just existed to live on this earth, passing by people she'll never see again, going to work to see the same faces, coming home to her two cats alone in a decent apartment.

but there was someone out there that found her interesting somehow.

he was not human, or was he? he was an enigma, a mysterious fellow, it seemed to her that he also existed on this planet just because.

their only interaction was when she was carrying groceries and one of her bags had ripped at the bottom, the food spilling out of the bag one by one, one popped out the package and another can of beans had dinted so hard it's juices spilled out, this mysterious "kurama" had offered to take her groceries home, and even get her a new can of beans.

both of their lives proved interesting to each other, she was an only child raised by a single mother in the poorer parts of town, and was only doing what she could to get by and make due.

she really was just an ordinary human.

but not to him.

it was probably because he didn't speak much to women, or, some type of recluse, but he felt something, hearing her talk, her mannerisms her style, the more he noticed things the harder he falls.

she seemed like the type to not let people get too close to her, she may have had some trauma in her life, leading her to respond in short, quick sentences, a blank expression almost as if she was mad or sad, prominent bags under her eyes, she was almost androgynous and from a distance you may confuse her for being male.

but none the less, she was beautiful, almost like an angel.

a fragile being she may have been, as if she could crack at any given moment, but he wanted to be there for her, to soothe her and ease her, to love her.

but she was nothing more than a stranger, missing his opportunity to grow closer with her.

he didn't even know why he liked her so much, he had never felt this way towards any other person, they were all just ordinary people to him, and vice versa, but she, for some reason, was a different cause..

the more she occupied his thoughts, the more he wanted to seek for her.

in the dead of night, she slept, the heavy blankets weighing her down as her eyes were closed, lost in a blissful dream unaware of the figure that stands by her window, it was a good, yet bad thing her curtains were half open, creating a slit in between the middle to see her perfectly.

and when his eyes land upon her, those reasons come crawling back, why he liked her so much.

why he wanted her.

imagining himself under the blankets with her, spooning her as his arm is wrapped around her body, breathing into the crook of her neck, embracing his warmth.

it gave him only a slither of confidence to talk to her when he see's her again, what's keeping him?

i love the contrast between how kurama (in his new body) and hiei grew up.

shiori gave kurama unconditional love, even despite him treating her as inferior when he was younger, and he ended up changing to appreciate and care for those around him more.

meanwhile, hiei was ripped from his mothers arms as an infant and tossed over a cliff while his mother screamed out for him, and was taken in by bandits who later abandoned him. he became a rude little shit that constantly insists he doesnt care about others, tries distancing himself from them.

and honestly, it really makes me want to imagine hiei interacting with shiori more. hes best friends with (later dating) her son, and she immediately starts treating him like family. hiei has no idea how to react to this, such immediate unconditional kindness and acceptance, but he tries being respectful since he knows how important she is to kurama.

just makes me picture shiori eventually having a family picture taken with them all in sweaters she made for them, with hiei standing there awkwardly next to kurama, wondering why hes there, wondering why they all insisted him being in a family picture when hes not family... so he thinks.

Compressed timeline AU where the Hokages retire younger instead of mostly dying (Minato still kicks the bucket, sorry man, should have called Hashirama to deal with Kurama instead of trying to tackle it yourself) and you just have them wandering around the village when Naruto's growing up

Bonus points for Kakashi's mom being a Senju so he ends up adopted by Tobirama. Hashirama would have volunteered but he already has Tsunade and Yamato and Mito said they weren't taking any more.

Kagami used to be terrified of his cousin but by now he's just like *bitch, at least I had the guts to marry the guy who kicked my ass and made me fall in love with him, fuck off*

Tobirama and Madara fucking hate each other and will leave family dinners if the other is there

Sasuke fucking hates Tobirama and Kakashi by extension until Kagami sits him down and is like "Madara's an idiot let me tell you why" "he's our clan head!" "do I look like I give a fuck-"

Sakura low-key loves Tobirama's work but she pretends to hate him at first because Sasuke does. Tobirama never quite respects her for that but after the Character Development where she learns to do things for herself he might teach her a few things if Tsunade asks.

People still keep ripping off Tobirama's jutsu and forgetting he invented it and yes he's still salty about it

He and Orochimaru got along very well before Orochimaru left the village

Naruto was upset at first but later if Tobirama scolds Kakashi for reading Icha Icha when he's supposed to be teaching this 12 year old is 1000% ready to throw down with the Lord Second for being mildly disrespectful to Kakashi-sensei

Kakashi is mildly embarrassed. Tobirama is vaguely nonplussed. Kagami is laughing so hard he can't breathe.

Shisui still dies but Kagami finds out and grabs Itachi and he and Madara get a confession out of him and killing Danzou is the only thing Madara and Tobirama have ever agreed on. They hate it but Tobirama still tells Hashirama to shut up when Madara lights Danzou on fire. It goes a ways towards the younger Uchiha stopping calling him the White Demon of the Senju.
