Plants, Vol. 12, Pages 3292: The First Virome of a Russian Vineyard

Among other pathogens, more than 80 viruses infect grapevine. The aim of this work was to study the virome diversity of grapevine viruses and mycoviruses of a vineyard using high-throughput sequencing technologies. The grapevine virome was studied in symptomatic vines of the Rkatsiteli cultivar (V. vinifera) collected at the vineyards of the Krasnodar Krai in Russia. Ribosomal-depleted total #RNA and isolated small #RNAs were used for library preparation and high-throughput sequencing. Six grapevine-infecting viruses and two viroids were validated by RT-PCR and analyzed phylogenetically. We identified the presence of grapevine leafroll-associated virus 3, grapevine Pinot gris virus, grapevine virus T, grapevine rupestris stem-pitting-associated virus, grapevine fleck virus, and grapevine rupestris vein feathering virus, as well as two viroids, grapevine yellow speckle viroid 1 and hop stunt viroid. We also studied the mycovirome of the vineyard and identified nine viruses with single-stranded positive-sense #RNA genomes: alternaria arborescens mitovirus 1, botrytis cinerea mitovirus 1, botrytis cinerea mitovirus 2, botrytis cinerea mitovirus 3, botrytis cinerea mitovirus 4, sclerotinia sclerotiorum mitovirus 3, botrytis cinerea hypovirus 1, grapevine-associated narnavirus 1, and botrytis virus F. In addition, we identified botrytis cinerea hypovirus 1 satellite-like #RNA and two single-stranded negative-sense #RNA viruses. This is the first study of grapevine mycoviruses in Russia. Terra Georgia Rkatsiteli Qvevri Dry Amber Wine

Terra Georgia Rkatsiteli Qvevri Dry Amber is an orange wine from Georgia. It is made from 100% Rkatsiteli grapes ad is fermented in Qvrevi.

Terra Georgia was co-founded by Archil Chitadze, and some friends from his student days, as a small, artisan wine producer making just two or three different Georgian wines. The company is located in Atskuri near Telavi, the main city and administrative center of Georgia’s eastern province of Kakheti. Quite soon Terra Georgia won an award from the Georgian Rural Development Agency. With the money they were able to scale up production allowing them to process up to 200 tons of grapes and released 11 different wines in 2022. Terra Georgia have vineyards in the Telavi, Mukuzani and Kindzmarauli micro zones and the wines are produced by Winery Bakhrationi.

The emphasis is on producing quality wines. The wines are Qvevri (traditional, clay wine-making vessels) and natural wines using traditional Georgian wine-making techniques whereby only indigenous yeasts are used and both red and white wines are aged on the skins. A variety of red wines is produced including fresh and fruity Saperavi wines through to heavier, richer styles. They also produce a semi-sweet red wine from the Kindzmarauli region. There are fresher styles of white wines and richer “amber” wines, the preferred term for orange wines in Georgia. 

Terra Georgia Rkatsiteli Qvevri Dry Amber Wine is made from Rkatsiteli. Rkatsiteli translates to “red stem” or “red horned” in Georgian and refers to the red-colored shoots of the grapevine. It is considered to be one of the oldest grape varieties in the world. Along with Mtsvane is one of the most important grape varieties in Georgia.

After harvest the grapes including all of the grape skins, stalks and pips (this is also known as “chaca”) are fermented in a Qvevri. The wine is then aged on the skins in the Qvevri for around 5 to 6 month, this is what lends the wine its amber colour.

Only naturally occuring yeasts are used and no animal products are used.

For fermentation and aging of wine for 6 months, Kvevri clay jugs are used, which have been used in Georgian winemaking from 6000 BC. The lovers from the Pheasant Tears winery are made in Amber style (or "orange" wine).

The production of wines of this style is a return to the methods that were used thousands of years ago. “Orange” wine is mainly white wine that is fermented and sometimes even kept in contact with grape skins, due to which it has a rich color and a pronounced taste.

Vinification and ripening of such wine, as a rule, takes place in vessels of the "ancient style", for example, in clay amphorae of Kvevri. Thanks to a special production method, Amber-style wines have excellent intensity, rich aroma and tangible tannin, which you will not usually find in white wines. The aroma of wine is filled with hints of raw honey, walnuts, nectarine and dried apricots. The taste of wine is dry, quite saturated, with notes of nuts, apricot, apple peel, nectarine, tangible tannin.
