2 [continued])  But, then again, the original intention of [what we call] wabi [佗]¹ is to manifest the spotlessness and innocence of the Buddha’s realm [here on earth].  Proceeding to this roji [露地]² and [its] sō-an [草菴], the rubbish [that has accumulated in our hearts] is completely swept [away]³.  And, in this case, both the host and [his] guests enter into an association of true-heartedness.

    Here the rules of measurements⁴, of sun [寸] and of shaku [尺], of the orthodox conventions, and so forth, are wholly beyond mention.  It is only a matter of a fire being kindled, hot water being boiled, and tea being drunk⁵.

    Other affairs must not be admitted [to the minds of the participants].  This is in accordance with the place where the Buddha-mind is revealed.

¹Wabi [佗].

    The use of this kanji (which is usually taken to mean lonely, unwanted, impoverished) seems to have begun with Sōtan*.

    Rikyū and his contemporaries wrote wabi using katakana, as wabi [ワビ].  The meaning that they understood the word to have was wabi [我美], where wa [我] means “my own;” and bi [美] means “aesthetic” (i.e., “sense of beauty”).

    For Sōtan, wabi was celebrating the insufficient, finding virtue in poverty; while for Rikyū, wabi was a matter of expressing the rules of the orthodox practice using objects that the host had “discovered” by himself†. __________ *In Chinese, the character seems to have been used as an alternative for the character tā [他], which was the (originally genderless) pronoun for the third person (he, she, it).  In Korean, ta [타 = 佗] is used to mean “the other” [person or thing]; and it appears that it was originally used in this way in Japan as well (being read either with the on pronunciation ta [た], or the kun form hoka [ほか]).  Wabiru [佗びる], as the Japanese verb-form, seems to be a case of employing the kanji as an orthographic variant of wabiru [侘びる], meaning “to long for” [something], “to worry about” [something] -- and, by extension, to be lonely, to be distressed.

    While some scholars extend this use of wabi [佗] back to ancient times, it appears that the classical usage was related to the pronunciation (wabiru, wabishii), rather than to this specific kanji -- and it seems that wabi [佗], written with this character, cannot be traced back much earlier than the early Edo period.

†When Rikyū arranged a kiji-tsurube beside the mukō-ro in his Mozuno ko-yashiki [百舌野小屋敷] (above), and made tea using a red Raku chawan and chū-natsume, he was performing the gokushin temae under the guise of wabi.  That is, he was using utensils that he had personally discovered, but which completely accorded with the details of the utensils used for the gokushin daisu temae.  Until this intention is thoroughly understood, it will be impossible to understand Rikyū’s approach chanoyu.

²Roji [露地].

    Once again, this expression uses kanji that were favored by Sōtan and the machi-shū.

    Rikyū wrote roji as roji [路地], which means a path leading around one side of the house (between the building and the wall or fence that divided one lot from the next) to the back of the property (where the detached chashitsu was erected).

³Shinkai wo futsu-kyakushi [塵芥ヲ拂却シ].

    Shinkai [塵芥] means dust.

    Futsu-kyakushi [拂却し]:  futsu [拂つ] literally means to brush away with the side of the hand* (and so it is being used here as being cognate with harau [掃う], which means to sweep away†); kyakushi [却し], in this kind of structure, means something like completely, thoroughly.  Thus, completely swept away. __________ *This reading is obscure.  The kanji is more commonly pronounced harau [払う].  That said, the use of obscure readings, and nonstandard kanji became very common in the tea literature of the early Edo period -- as a way to obscure the meaning, or make things seem more mysterious (and so require the explanation of a teacher -- which was only given “when the student had progressed to the proper level of attainment”).

    In contemporary Japanese, the kanji is usually used to mean pay (debts), clear out.  These seem to be derivative nuances that eventually became standard.

†It is possible that futsu [拂] (= harau [拂 う]) is a corruption of harau [掃う]; perhaps a copyist’s error.

⁴Kane [䂓矩].

    Kane [䂓矩] means a measuring device (such as a draftsman’s compasses), a ruler.  Here it is referring to the rules of measurements on which the teachings of kane-wari are based.

⁵Hi wo okoshi, yu wo wakashi, cha wo kissuru made no koto nari [火ヲヽコシ、湯ヲワカシ、茶ヲ喫スルマデノコト也].

    Hi wo okoshi [火を起し] means to set up a fire, start a fire.

    Yu wo wakashi [湯を沸かし] means to boil the hot water.

    Cha wo kissuru [茶を喫する] means to drink the tea.

    While these phrases would seem to imitate Rikyū’s famous poem*, it appears that the person responsible for writing this passage was, however, ignorant of that poem (and, indeed, of Rikyū’s actual approach to chanoyu).

    Indeed, many of the sentiments expressed in this very long passage would appear to have been derived from the Zen-Cha Roku [禪茶錄]† of the (Korean expatriate) monk Takuan Sōhō [澤庵宗彭; 1573 ~ 1645] (who arrived in Japan in 1603 -- according to Kanshū oshō-sama, who was his direct biological descendant -- in the company of the potters with whom Furuta Sōshitsu had “studied” Korean pottery techniques during 1592, and who were traveling to Japan to bring the bowls that Oribe had co-made, which the potters subsequently fired for him after he left‡), which is further evidence that this discourse was written long after Rikyū’s (and Nambō Sōkei’s) death. __________ *Chanoyu to ha tada yu wo wakashi cha wo tatete, nomu bakari naru-moto wo shiru-beshi  [茶の湯とは只湯を沸し茶を立て、呑むばかり成る本を知るべし]:  “with respect to chanoyu, just boil the hot-water, prepare the tea, and then drink it:  doing only this is the basic principal, you should understand.”

†Takuan wrote the Zen-Cha Roku in what the Koreans and Japanese believed to be “scholarly/classical Chinese” (meaning that it is not really intelligible to the average individual -- and even less so to the Chinese).

    The Japanized version of the text was produced by a monk named "Jakuan Sōtaku" [寂庵宗澤; ? ~ ?] (about whom nothing is known -- his name could actually be a garbling of Takuan’s name), appeared during the third decade of the nineteenth century; and it is this version of the text that is best known today.  Kanshū oshō-sama had a copy of the original, which he allowed me to copy; unfortunately, someone here borrowed it, and it was never returned (though apparently that text was eventually published in Korea, and is said to be still available here).

    Some scholars attribute the authorship of the Zen-Cha Roku to Sen no Sōtan.  (Their blind hatred of Korea prompts the nationalist scholars to go to the most insane extremes in their effort to separate chanoyu from Korea -- despite the fact that everything in the early period came specifically from Korea.)

‡These bowls are usually called “oku-gorai chawan” [奧高麗茶碗] in Japan.

    Some of the potters who accompanied Takuan oshō decided to remain in Japan, establishing the Hagi [萩] kilns in Nagato province (Yamaguchi Prefecture), in western Honshū.
