I just saw a trailer for Virgin River’s fourth season and choked on my drink. Of course Netflix Not-Mel doesn’t know who the father of her child is.
Anyway, here are some basic, spoiler-esque differences between the book and the show (apparently):
- There is never at any time in the book a question of who the father is when Mel ends up pregnant. Her husband’s still dead and she’s only been with one man since him.
- Jack’s not a slut with a messy, dramatic life. At all. He was in a casual relationship very early on with Charmaine but called it off when he started catching feelings for Mel. Charmaine knew something was starting to feel off and outright asked him about it one night. She pretty much fell off the face of the earth gracefully after that and accepted that they couldn’t keep their relationship going.
- Mel and Jack both are very intelligent, self-sufficient people. They’re pretty in charge of their emotions (with the exception of Mel’s trauma of her husband being murdered and Jack’s mild PTSD). Even then, they’ve got a good handle on themselves all things considered.
- The real Jack Sheridan is a good man. He’s strong, reliable, and essentially a rock for both the town and, eventually, Mel. He has his flaws and shortcomings, but he’s human. He’s your log cabin, hunting-and-fishing man’s man, but he’s also loving and gentle. He has his insecurities and fears, but he’s normal.
- Jack is eventually (spoiler alert) the father of not one, but two children. Both with the same woman. I.e., Mel.
- I’m not as picky about appearances and both of the actors are nice-looking, but Mel’s a tiny, curly-haired blonde in the book (Jack mentally refers to her as a, “feminine little thing”), and Jack’s a big bear of a Marine still rocking his military ‘do. Pretty much all the women imply that despite being out of the Marines for awhile and being forty, he’s still built like one. It’s an in-your-face masculine vs. feminine balance with the two of them.
- As a personal opinion, the book actually creates a very interesting contrast between men’s and women’s respective “warzones” in equally graphic terms. There’s the graphic trauma of childbirth (Mel being in OBGYN and these rural women not really having quick, easy, or timely access to ambulances, hospitals, or epidurals) and that of war through Jack and the Marines.
The book is graphic across the board, but I’d definitely recommend (to adults only) it if you like the overall concept of the show but hate the amount of drama.
There’s drama in the book, but at least in the first one, it’s pretty grounded in reality.

Hi Emma! I would like to apologize first because this will be big and because I am an insane person. Remember when I sent you that ask about the Brazilian romance publishers, I decided to do a better research and share the results with you because I really want to see your books being published in Portuguese.
I decided to give a little description of the Publisher and some of their authors, that I hope you are familiarized with their work, because it might be helpful. If it's not I apologize again.
Arqueiro: They are my absolute favorite. Quite established here. I am trying not to talk a lot about them because IF I COULD PICK ONE... it would definitely be them. Authors: Ali Hazelwood, Amy Lea, Ashley Herring Blake, Jenny Colgan, Julia Quinn, Lyssa Kay Adams.
Harlequin: They have a very diversified portfolio and the "queens of romance", they are cool, they don't play too much safe, their next book will be a romance about an adult film star falling in love. Authors: Susan Wiggs, Robyn Carr, Sarah Morgan, Mia Sosa, Ava Wilder, Kate Bromley, Nora Roberts, Suzanne Enoch.
Intrínseca: Big Publisher, they published Elliot Page's biography. I like them, but I don't agree with all their paper decisions. Authors: Tessa Bailey, Lauren Forsythem Jessa Hastings, Lynn Painter, Beth O'Leary, Jenna Evans Welch, Jade Beer, Sarah Adams, Jesse Q Sutanto, Tracey Livesay.
Verus: Part of a larger editorial group, not my first choice, but a good one nonetheless. Authors: Emily Henry, Laura Kayem Clare Pooley, Nancy Springer.
Rocco: Honestly they are huge, they published Harry Potter and Anne Rice here. Not my first choice but they are getting better at selling their romances. Authors: K.L Walther, Frances Mayes, Margaret Atwood, Lucy Clarke, Sandra Brown, Hannah Grace.
Bookmarks: They are independent, but they publish such cute books, the illustrations are adorable and the covers too. CUTE CUTE CUTE. I am dying because they had a huge sale and I didn't buy some books and now I am bitching about it to anyone willing to listen. Authors: Caroline Linden, Teresa Medeiros, Samantha Chase, Noelle Adams, Elizabeth Grey.
Charme: This one is 100% feminine and they are independent too. They publish some extra 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶 Authors: Penelope Ward,, Meghan Quinn, Vi Keeland.
Sorry Emma, this got huge but I really want to see your work at my favorite bookstore!!!! I hope this isn't too intrusive!!!!!

Joe Pickett - read or watch
I prefer to read books, then watch a movie.  I think that has always been true.  I mean there has been and will always be certain exceptions (like Lord of the Rings).  I have read all the Robyn Carr books, but I became bored with the show.  I read all the Harry Potter books, but I have not watched all the movies.  I have read all the Bridgerton Books by Julie Quinn and watched all the first season before I stopped watching.
I have enjoyed reading the Joe Pickett novels by CJ Box. I have read most of the books. I really like the mystery and the suspense.    However, the series about Joe Pickett on Paramount Plus had me totally enthralled.  This week, I have managed to watch two complete seasons (in between baseball games).  I think I have almost swallowed my tongue more than once.  What kills me - absolutely kills me - is that there is no season three.  Paramount canceled the show.  There are storylines that were not completed. There was a wrap up of the primary case, but there were secondary story lines and definitely a
To be completely honest, I don’t know if I would have stayed fixated on the show if there were more seasons.   I do have the next book in the Joe Pickett series on hold for me at the library, but I am sure there are more than a few names ahead of me.
What I have figured out as I have gotten older, my attention span for movies and drama shows (no matter how good) wanes off and on. It has also made me wonder if the old way of letting out new shows once a week, kept the drama alive for me.  A little delayed gratification perhaps kept my attention better.   Either way, I am now chomping my teeth for the next Joe Pickett book, Three-Inch Teeth.
Elise has sent in a new interview with Mark Greaney.  The interview discusses his newest book, The Chaos Agent.  There is also a guest review of Embers in the London Sky.  I have added some reviews as well…  So enjoy reading!

Are you ready for a heartwarming story of a woman starting over in a new place? Then look no further than Sharon Sala's latest book, A Fresh Start in Borden's Gap. This is a tale that will make you laugh, cry, and feel all warm and fuzzy inside. First grade teacher Katie McGrath has been through a lot in the last year. After two life-changing events, she decides to leave Albuquerque and start fresh in Borden's Gap, Tennessee. She's happy to get back to teaching, but it takes some time for her to feel like herself again. Fortunately, she has a new neighbor, Sam Youngblood, and his adorable twin daughters to help her through the transition. If you're a fan of Debbie Macomber or Robyn Carr, you'll love A Fresh Start in Borden's Gap. Sharon Sala is a skilled storyteller, and she really knows how to tug at your heartstrings. You'll feel like you're right there in Borden's Gap with Katie, Sam, and the rest of the town. One of the things I loved most about this book was the way it captures the feeling of a small town. Borden's Gap feels like a real place, full of quirky characters and charming little shops. It's the kind of town where everyone knows everyone else's business, but they all come together when it counts. And speaking of quirky characters, the twins are an absolute delight. They're mischievous and adorable, and they steal the show whenever they're on the page. Sam is a great dad, and you can really feel the bond he has with his daughters. But of course, the heart of the story is Katie and her journey of self-discovery. She's been through a lot, and it's inspiring to watch her find the strength to start over. Her relationship with Sam is sweet and slow-burning, and you'll be rooting for them all the way. Overall, A Fresh Start in Borden's Gap is a feel-good read that will put a smile on your face. It's a perfect book to curl up with on a cozy evening, with a cup of tea and a fuzzy blanket. If you're looking for a heartwarming romance with a small town setting, this is the book for you. So go ahead and give it a try – you won't be able to put it down! Don't miss out on this incredible read!
