Gang of Four - "I Love a Man in a Uniform"
Sarah Vaughn - "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever"
Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians - "Strawberry Mind"
The Who - "Eminence Front"
Shriekback - "Nemesis"
This song is very special to me and a person dear to me (deeply psychosexually of course). We made up a stupid parody of it all about soup when we were working together in a restaurant.
Sarah Vaughn's voice is a deep, smooth, gentle cardiac massage. That weight and texture moving with upbeat, downright jaunty piano and brushy percussion has an effect, go listen to it right now.
Robyn Hitchcock is the kind of guy who conveys many vibes, and one of them suggests that he knows all your secrets. The funny, gross, nasty, sexy, bitchy, sorrowful, transcendent things in your secret mind. This one's got some wacky zydeco thing going on.
Whatever the fuck was going on in this track on one of their most divisively wtf albums (which I love) is compelling genius. When I was maybe 13, this song landed on me like a tense, weighty, alive thing. It's self-absorption directed at the outside world, and it's kinda dark and absurd.
This song goes harder than anything. The lyrics are triumphantly bombastic, batshit, a pretentious stompy dance party, makes ya want to do an interpretive Frankenstein dance about parthenogenesis.
Thank you for the inbox! This was just what I needed today. <3333

do you have any music related home decorations?
Just this Morrissey mug I bought at a gig, and a Funko Pop of him (from when Pops were still fun--I had to special preorder him; there are too many of them now, they're not special). Yes my desk is messy so is everyone's.
what is a song you are obsessed with at the moment?
I answered "Common People" by Pulp, elsewhere, but that also reminded me of a personal theme song from back when I was young and glamourous. "We're trash, you and me, we're the litter in the breeze, we're the lovers on the streets."
is there/what is a song that has been ruined for you by an ex or a former crush/situationship/relationship?
Sort of? I dated a guy I regret dating, back in high school, and his fave was Skinny Puppy. So while I was never a Skinny Puppy fan, now I dislike them because of the association with that guy.
what song do you listen to if you need to pump yourself up to do something difficult?
Whatever by Godsmack makes me feel ten feet tall and bulletproof.
what's a song that you absolutely cannot help dancing to?
Dead Stars by Covenant, especially at nightclub volume with nightclub lighting.
what do you think is the greatest love song of all time?
Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division.
do you have any band t-shirts or other clothing items and what are they??
I used to have a ton; I would always buy a t-shirt at a gig. So back in the day I had t-shirts from Gene Loves Jezebel, Drivin N Cryin, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Tribe, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Public Image Ltd, Morrissey, Sugarcubes, Spore, Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians, 10,000 Maniacs, The Power Station, REM. . .and probably more I can't think of at the moment. Of course that was many years and many clothing sizes ago so currently I have 2 Morrissey t-shirts and one Morrissey hoodie, and a Morrissey mug.
Band t-shirts nowadays seem to just be graphic art you wear around for fashion (at least that's how my kids and their friends wear them), but back in the '80s it was how we found our people.
This is one of my faves because it makes me laugh, but not one I have because I don't support Moz's involvement with PETA.
