Snow-blowing Toyah Willcox Rocks around Robert Fripp’s Christmas Tree

There may be snow on Robert Fripp’s roof, but Toyah Willcox is still his biggest fan.

And whilst the precipitation was actually a shaving-cream snow cone Willcox sprayed on Fripp’s head and whilst she used a floor fan to clear the deck, “Sunday Lunch” was served bloody hot.

The First Couple of Farce - fancying themselves Santa’s Naughty Elves - delivered “Rockin’ around the Christmas Tree” for this week’s noontime musical meal from jolly good, olde fashioned England.

More proof Christmastime brings out the kid - and kidder - in everyone.

You and Tom had always gone and got a new, real tree every year when you got married. You adore getting to smell the fresh pine and getting a taste of home on the coast. But after your daughter was born, you bought a fake tree. She was only 5 weeks old so you didn't want to go to the tree farm with her being so little. And you both figured it was safer because there would be no pine needles on the floor for when she and any another children had the "put everything in my mouth stage". But 5 years and a son later, both kids asked for a real tree this year and neither of you could say no.

Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” was originally recorded and released in 1958. Written by Johnny Marks and produced by Owen Bradley, it first hit the Hot 100 (at No. 64) dated Dec. 12, 1960.

In 2023, 65 years later, the song hit #1 on the chart.

So how do you think Dante and Vergil would deal with their s/o loving the rockin’ around the Christmas tree song to where they have to listen to it once a day cuz every other traditional christmas song is either “creepy” or “depressing”?

Oh boy,

Dante

As soon as the colder weather rolls in, he already knows what's coming.

At first, Dante quite enjoyed seeing his partner running around and singing the song as they decorated the DMC building. Now, half a month later he almost wonders if they'll ever let him live a day without it.

"Hun, does this have to be the only song we listen to?", Dante asks, handing you another garland to hang up. "Yes, because all of the other ones are creepy and depressing," you say, scrunching up your nose.

He couldn't argue with you on that one.

He only understands it a little bit. He doesn't fight is s/o over it though, just letting them continue to play it on repeat. Sometimes he jokes about it sounding like a mall store in the DMC building whenever you start playing it once it's officially Christmas time.

Dante does sing with you sometimes. If he's really feeling less old, he'll even dance with you.

He finds himself humming it sometimes, stopping for a moment to chuckle at himself for letting you get the song stuck in his head but he honestly, wouldn't have it any other way. It's now something he connects to you and what could be better than you?

Vergil

Seeing the first bits of snow hit the ground makes the older man groan. Vergil wasn't one for Christmas songs or the holiday itself in general to begin with. He understood your stance on all the other songs but in his mind, this one was almost as bad as Mariah Carrie; constant, none stop, and overplayed.

He complains about it but he doesn't really mean anything he says. It's all in good fun teasing and you kind of like it. It's become your thing every single year.

"This song is annoying," Vergil mumbles. "Vergil Sparda, you did not," you say. Vergil looks up at you, a fake innocent expression displayed on his face. "Did not what?" he asks. You gasp, exaggerating your hurt before walking off to find your son, Nero, to complain about his father. Vergil only chuckles, sticking his nose back into his book.

Nero finds all of this funny, letting you fake complain about his father and such. He makes hot cocoa and the two of you sit at the table like a little gossip circle.

Vergil watches you from afar, dancing and singing to the song with literally anyone close by. And if he's the only one in the room? Well, grumpy old man sucks it up and sings and dances with you. He secretly likes it but he wasn't going to give Dante more fuel to tease him.

Sometimes he'll find himself humming it to himself as well. He'll quickly stop once he notices, checks to make sure no one heard him and then continue on with his task.

If you catch him humming the song? Well, there is no better way to dig into him more about it than to play the song and make him sing out loud. You should be lucky he loves you, otherwise? Well, now that's just too violent for such a happy holiday.
