- Strong boundaries. You may have high standards and strict “rules” for people in your life especially romantic partners. Will not just accept anybody.
- And one thing I’ve noticed is whether it be saturn trine asc or saturn square asc, these people end up in positions where their partners have to “earn” them. Ex: making yourself difficult to schedule dates with. Making their potential partner prove interest and intent in some kind of way. Partners have to chase you to an extent.
- Also, I’ve seen this as dad disapproving of partner. Partner had to gradually work to bond with the dad. Ex: Helping him at the house, Initiating conversation with him every visit, Telling the dad his future plans and how they involve his daughter, etc. Saturn Asc people’s partners really WORK to prove themselves.

Healing Speed and Soul
daniel ricciardo x fem!physiologistReader
summary: The McLaren team sought the expertise of a skilled physiotherapist, you, to tend to the physical well-being of their drivers. Little did they know, you would soon become more than just a healer, evolving into a vital source of emotional support for the drivers, especially Daniel Ricciardo.

——————————————————————————
On your first day at McLaren, you nervously stepped into the bustling atmosphere of the team's headquarters. Team principal Zack Brown warmly welcomed you, introducing you to the dedicated mechanics, engineers, and other essential members of the McLaren family.
As you walked through the high-tech facility, you felt a mix of excitement and anticipation. The air was filled with the hum of activity.
Zack eventually led you to the heart of the team the garage. There, you found yourself face to face with the dynamic duo of McLaren, Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo. Lando, with his infectious enthusiasm, greeted you with a friendly smile, while Daniel, known for his trademark grin, extended a warm handshake.
"Hey there! Welcome to the team," Lando exclaimed, his energy contagious.
Daniel, with a twinkle in his eye, added, "Great to have you on board. We've heard you work wonders, hope you're ready for the challenge!"
You, feeling the warmth of their welcome, couldn't help but reciprocate the positive energy. Little did you know that beyond the world of physiotherapy, you were about to embark on a journey that would intertwine your life with the adrenaline-fueled existence of the McLaren drivers.
Tumblr media
A few days into your tenure at McLaren, the intense rhythm of Formula One life began to settle around you. As the physiotherapist, you observed the drivers, Lando and Daniel, pushing themselves to the limits during practice sessions and briefings.
Recognizing the importance of maintaining their peak physical condition, you decided it was time for a comprehensive medical checkup. You approached Lando and Daniel with a plan to ensure their bodies were in optimal shape for the upcoming races.
"Lando, Daniel, I'd like to conduct a thorough medical checkup to ensure you're both physically prepared for the challenges ahead. It's crucial to address any potential issues before they escalate," you explained.
Lando, always eager to improve, nodded in agreement, "Sure thing, doc. Anything to stay at the top of our game!"
Daniel, with a playful grin, added, "I trust you've got the magic touch. Let's do it."
Tumblr media
The medical examinations unfolded in the state-of-the-art McLaren facilities, with you meticulously assessing their fitness, flexibility, and overall health. As you worked, conversations flowed, revealing not only physical aspects but also providing insights into the drivers' mindset and emotional well-being.
In those moments, you realized the delicate balance between physical prowess and emotional resilience required in their life. Little did you know that your role would extend beyond the realm of physiotherapy, becoming a crucial pillar of support for Lando and Daniel as they faced the relentless challenges of the racing season.
In the quiet confines of your small office, it became evident during Daniel's medical checkup that he was neglecting his nutritional needs. You, observing the signs of under-eating, decided to address the issue directly.
"Daniel, I've noticed you might be skimping on meals. Nutrition is a crucial part of staying at your peak, especially in this demanding sport," you gently pointed out.
Daniel, usually vibrant, seemed quieter than usual. After a moment of contemplation, he simply nodded in acknowledgment.
Sighing, you grabbed your coat. "Come on, Ricciardo. We're going to fix this. I'm taking you for a proper meal, no excuses."
Tumblr media
Leading the way, you and Daniel left the confines of the McLaren headquarters, embarking on a journey to ensure the Australian driver's well, being extended beyond the racetrack. Little did you know that this impromptu outing would mark the beginning of a unique bond, intertwining your role as a physiotherapist with a deeper connection to the personal lives of the McLaren driver.
Navigating the streets in the fading daylight, you led Daniel to your apartment. The confusion on his face was evident as he questioned, "Your place? Why are we here?"
Turning to him with a determined look, you explained, "Daniel, it's not just about making you eat; it's about making sure you eat right. I'll be cooking for you. Trust me, it's time for some proper nourishment."
Once inside your cozy apartment, you set about preparing a wholesome meal, the aroma wafting through the air. Daniel, still a bit perplexed, watched as you skillfully moved around the kitchen.
"You're really going all out. I appreciate it," Daniel admitted, a hint of gratitude in his eyes.
As you sat down to eat, you shared a smile. "Sometimes, a good meal can make all the difference, especially when the pressures of racing start taking a toll. Consider it part of my job to keep you fueled and ready for the season ahead."
As you shared the meal in your apartment, a comfortable silence enveloped you. Suddenly, breaking the quietude, you looked at Daniel and asked, "Who?"
Daniel, with a mouthful of food, raised an eyebrow, "Who what?"
Softly, you persisted, "Who made you think you shouldn't eat? There's something deeper here, Daniel. I can see it."
Caught off guard by the unexpected question, Daniel hesitated for a moment. A mix of surprise and vulnerability flickered in his eyes before he finally spoke, "Well, it's just... the constant pressure, expectations, you know? Sometimes, it feels like I don't deserve a break, even for a decent meal."
You nodded in understanding, recognizing the weight of the expectations that came with Formula One. "It's crucial to remember that taking care of yourself isn't a sign of weakness. If anything, it's a strength. You're not alone in this, Daniel. We're a team, on and off the track."
You, sensing there was more to Daniel's struggle, looked at him with a discerning gaze. "Are you sure you're telling me everything about that? Because Norris doesn't seem to have this issue."
Daniel hesitated for a few moments, glancing away before finally admitting, "Well, some people think I should be careful with food, that my weight isn't the best for racing. But yeah, little norris isn’t a problem like me for them."
A dry chuckle escaped your lips. "What a load of nonsense. Your performance on the track speaks for itself. You don't need to conform to anyone's unrealistic standards. It's about being healthy and fit, not fitting into someone else's idea of what a racer should look like."
Clearing the plates from the table, you took a decisive stance. "From now on, I'll bring you lunch, Daniel."
Daniel, trying to be polite, protested, "No, no, you don't have to do that, really."
You turned to him with a determined look, "Daniel, my role is to take care of you. Of course, I'm doing it, and you have no choice."
Concern crept into Daniel's expression, "But Zack makes me follow a strict regime. He can't know."
A disbelieving shake of the head, you retorted, "Zack agreed to this nonsense? Well, then it'll be our secret. Meet me in my office at lunch tomorrow. We'll eat together."
Tumblr media
As the weeks passed, you continued your routine of preparing and bringing lunches for Daniel, meeting him in your office during race weekends. The aroma of home-cooked meals became a familiar presence, and whispers of camaraderie between you and Daniel began to circulate.
People couldn't help but notice the positive changes in Daniel, he seemed healthier, more energized, and perhaps even a bit happier. The bond that had formed between you and him extended beyond professional duties, creating a ripple effect in the team dynamics.
Colleagues started to see the genuine care and support you provided, not just in terms of physical well-being but also as a source of emotional strength for Daniel.
Tumblr media
In the bustling atmosphere of the McLaren team lunch area, Daniel found himself with no choice but to join his teammates while eating the lunch you had prepared for him. Sitting across from Lando Norris, one of the team members jokingly teased, "Didn't know you knew how to cook, Daniel."
Daniel, taking a bite, replied honestly, "I'm not the one making it."
The teasing took an unexpected turn when the team member quipped, "What, you got a wife at home or something making you these?"
Daniel chuckled dryly, playing along, "Something like that, actually, yeah."
The laughter subsided when Lando, with a curious expression, raised an eyebrow, "And you think I could ask your 'wife' for one too? I've got a appointment with her this afternoon, pain in my back you know."
Daniel's eyes widened, a mix of surprise and realization dawning on him. "How do you know who's making me those lunchboxes?"
Lando leaned in, a knowing smile on his face. "She has the exact same lunchbox, mate. But don't worry, your and your "wifey" secret is safe with me. I'm aware of how tough the team can be on you."
Tumblr media
Arriving home late, you were taken aback to find Daniel in your apartment, busy preparing dinner. "Daniel, what are you doing?" you asked, a mix of surprise and gratitude.
He gently helped you off with your shoes and coat, replying with a smile, "You've been doing so much for me, so I wanted to return the favor. Not promising a meal as good as yours, though." He chuckled and guided you to the dining table, ensuring you were comfortably seated.
"Daniel, it's actually my job to take care of you," you reminded him.
He sighed, placing your plates on the table, and took a seat in front of you. "And as your friend, it's my job too. Let's forget work, mmh?"
You smiled at him, grateful for the unexpected gesture. "Thank you, Daniel. This means a lot."
Mid-dinner, Daniel suddenly got up, exclaiming, "I almost forgot." He returned to the table with two glasses and a bottle of wine.
"Daniel, we work tomorrow," you reminded him.
He playfully interrupted, "Ah ah ah, what did I say? We forget work tonight, okay?"
You sighed, smiling, "Anything you want, Daniel."
With that, you clicked your glasses. The shared laughter and genuine connection over dinner marked a brief escape from the intense world you navigated together.
Relaxing on the couch after dinner, you and Daniel found yourselves immersed in easy conversation about anything and everything. As the night unfolded, Daniel slyly mentioned, "You know, I may have indirectly told the guys it was my 'wife' who prepared my lunchbox."
You raised an eyebrow with a playful grin. "Oh, is that so, Daniel? Well, get ready. I'll start leaving lovey notes on those lunchboxes of yours. Always dreamt of being a good wife to my husband."
They both burst into laughter, the shared humor lightening the atmosphere. In that moment, amidst the jokes and banter, you and Daniel found solace in each other's company.
Tumblr media
Days later, on a day when you couldn't eat with Daniel, you slipped a small note into his lunchbox. It read: "Fuel for the race, but don't forget to savor the moments off the track too. You've got this! - Your wifey."
When Daniel opened his lunchbox and discovered the note, a wide grin spread across his face. During the team's lunch break, Lando noticed Daniel's amused expression and couldn't resist asking, "What's got you all smiles, mate?"
Daniel, holding up the note, chuckled, "Looks like I've got a secret admirer, leaving lovey notes in my lunchbox."
Lando leaned in, feigning surprise. "Oh, a secret admirer, huh? Got any idea who it might be?"
Daniel playfully rolled his eyes, "Come on, Lando, you know exactly who it is. She's making sure I eat well and stay in high spirits."
Lando, joining in the light-hearted banter, teased, "Well, aren't you lucky to have your 'wife' looking out for you? I hope she leaves some notes for me too."
Daniel, with a smirk, responded to Lando's teasing, "Keep dreaming, mate. It's my 'wife' making them laugh." The banter continued, and laughter echoed through the lunch area.
However, as Daniel glanced at your note and the warmth it brought, a subtle longing lingered. A part of him wished the playful joke about a secret admirer and a lunch-making 'wife' could transcend the realm of humor. Little did he realize that within the confines of the jokes, a deeper connection was slowly taking root, sparking emotions that stretched beyond the boundaries of mere camaraderie.
Tumblr media
The 'wifey' joke continued to weave itself into the fabric of Daniel and your dynamic. Whenever Daniel passed by your office, he'd playfully inquire, "How's wifey doing?" Lando, ever the instigator, joined in, making insinuations that left the two of them chuckling.
Before crucial races, their banter took a unique turn. Daniel, often discussing strategy with Lando, would hear remarks like, "If I win, your wife better make me that famous lunchbox for me too." The playful commentary even spilled into interviews, with Lando winking at Daniel when asked about their favorite meals.
In one interview, when the interviewer queried about the drivers' preferred dishes, Lando slyly responded, "Well, it depends on who's making it, right, mate?" He wiggled his brows at Daniel, leaving the audience in stitches.
Tumblr media
During a casual night in with your friends at your place, you packed two lunchboxes of the same meal you had prepared. Observing your actions, one friend raised an eyebrow, teasing, "Two? Planning to feed a small army or something?"
You chuckled shyly, "It's just for one of my patients."
Another friend, noticing the little notes signed 'wifey,' couldn't resist poking fun. "And those little notes signed 'wifey' are also for your patient?"
Laughing, you playfully scolded, "Hey! Put that down!" The room erupted in laughter, the friends enjoying the playful banter. Your lunchbox antics had become a source of amusement not just within the Mclaren garage but also among your close circle of friends.
——————————————————————————
Searching for Daniel in the garage, you found him with Lando. "Wifey," they both cooed simultaneously, earning a punch in the shoulder from Daniel to Lando. "Not you," Daniel clarified, prompting laughter.
"Be gentle, Daniel," you teased, handing him his lunchbox with a little note as usual. "Need to be taking care of an engineer during lunch, sorry." You side-hugged Daniel before turning to Lando, "Pole position, right, little Norris?"
"Yes, ma'am," Lando replied with a smirk.
You chuckled and handed him a lunchbox, saying, "Well earned. Keep going like that, Lando. I'm proud of you." Lando happily hugged you, expressing his gratitude. He then turned to Daniel with a mischievous grin, "Guess I also got a wife now, loser."
"Hell no, you don't, little mosquito," you laughed, playfully shutting down Lando's claim. With a quick exchange, you got back to work, leaving the two drivers with smiles on their faces.
——————————————————————————
The usual lunch hour arrived, but Daniel didn't show up at your office. Growing worried, you decided to search for him in the garage. Passing by Zack's office, you overheard Zack's cold reprimand, focusing on Daniel's weight.
Unable to bear it, you entered the office with determination. "It's my fault," Daniel began, looking at you with concern. "No, no, it's not her fault," he continued, addressing Zack, "You're right, Zack. I haven't been careful recently, and I'll change that."
You, however, halted Daniel with a stern gaze. "No, you won't."
Turning to Zack, you asserted, "Zack, as Daniel's physiologist, I took the liberty to ensure he's properly nourished because apparently he hasn't been before my arrival here. His well-being is my responsibility, and I won't let him compromise that for any unrealistic standards."
Zack's anger flared as he confronted you, "You knew about his strict regime, and you went against my orders!"
"Yeah, I did! I did, and if I had to, I'll do it again," you asserted, standing your ground.
Zack, visibly angered, sat up. "You know what you'll do? Pack your things, you're fired."
Daniel, attempting to mediate, approached Zack, "Zack, it's not her fault. She didn't mean to—"
Stopping Daniel with a raised hand, you interjected, "Stop, Daniel. I don't want to work for someone like him anymore anyway."
With those words, you turned away and headed to your office to pack your things. The air in the room hung heavy with tension, marking the end of your tenure at McLaren.
While you were packing, your focus interrupted by the sound of the door, you instinctively responded, "My office is closed, sorry."
"It's me," Daniel's voice cut through, and you turned around to see him standing there.
"Oh," you uttered, and without a word, Daniel opened his arms. You hurriedly approached, burying your head in his chest. "I'm so sorry wifey," he whispered.
"It's not your fault, Daniel," you mumbled into his embrace, finding solace in the midst of the tumultuous situation.
“What am I supposed to do without you at the garage now?" Daniel thought out loud, his worry palpable.
You chuckled sadly, "You could always still come to mine for lunch."
He couldn't believe it. Pushing you away a bit, Daniel questioned, "You just lost your job because of me, but you continue. Who are you?"
"Honestly? Just a girl who grew too close to her patient," you admitted.
Raising an eyebrow in confusion, Daniel looked at you with wide eyes as if connecting the dots. "You're too important for me to let people treat you like shit, especially when it's putting your health in danger," you explained.
His eyes widened, and it seemed like realization struck him. "Do you mean that—"
"Yeah, I love you, Daniel," you confessed.
For a moment, silence hung in the air, and doubt crept into your mind. Yet, before you could dwell on it, Daniel stopped your doubts. "Then it's good you got fired, else I couldn't have been able to do this."
He grabbed your face and kissed you. "Would your dreams be fulfilled with me as your husband?"

Author's note: Just so you know, I am not familiar with medicine at the college level, only what I had in high school biology, so I tried to write these headcanons as neutrally as possible. And all in all, even if I learn anything now, it is only in the field of physiotherapy because my friend is going to such studies this year, so sorry if it's not what you wanted, but still, enjoy!
Tumblr media
Leonardo
◇I won't lie, I'm sure this guy admires you.
◇Not everyone gets a chance to get into such a school!
◇But knowing his personality, he'll probably tease you a lot, calling you a 'nerd.'
◇It usually doesn't cross the line, BUT if Leonardo goes too far with his teasing, especially when you're tired after classes, you often threaten to perform a dissection on him like a frog.
◇And when he arrogantly waved it off at first, you and Donnie pulled a prank on him with that theme.
◇Everything was recorded as he lay pinned to the table, and you stood over him with a scalpel.
◇Leo thinks you're very diligent, hardworking, and disciplined, which also means mentally exhausted.
◇Such a school demands a lot, so expect that during study sessions in your cozy home, that idiotic turtle will come and drag you to the hidden city to relax.
◇I'm sure he'll try to make you laugh often using elaborate medical jokes he found on the internet.
◇Sometimes he also feels a bit jealous. He has some basic knowledge when he has to patch himself or his brothers up, but deep down, he would also like to go to such a medical school to enhance his skills. But you see the whole situation.
◇But don't worry! In your free time, you'll give him a bit of education with the knowledge you've acquired so far.
◇Even if he tries to hide it, he's a bit overwhelmed by the vast amount of knowledge and skills you possess.
◇But despite that, he's proud of you for taking on the challenge and fulfilling your dreams! Or at least you're on the right path to doing so.
Raphael
◇The proudest big bro! You got into that school?? Amazing!
◇Your number one supporter!
◇Raphael truly appreciates your intelligence, hard work, and determination. He never imagined himself getting into a medical school, not only because of the whole situation but also because his knowledge absolutely doesn't go in the same direction as yours. But that his friend managed it? Nice!
◇He admires your selfless need to help other people. He's keeping his green fingers crossed for you to achieve that dream medical title!
◇I'm sure he suggested some ‘experiments’ on himself for you to practice a topic from lectures. In the end, you hit him on the head for such an absurd idea. You didn't intend to do that! That's Donatello's role! Besides, mixed human DNA with turtle DNA would probably mess with your mind more than help.
◇Although their biology sometimes interested you.
◇When he notices you're tired and stressed from all the medical material, he'll gladly take you to their living room, and under a warm blanket, you'll have a Lou Jitsu movie marathon (where you'll eventually fall asleep, lmao) or play a bandana takeover with his brothers, all tricks allowed for your amusement!
◇Hey, don't complain about his support. Many times, you've helped him when he was stressed about being the leader before Leo or after the Kraang invasion. That's all he can do!
◇Sometimes he was confused and a bit unhappy when you started explaining various medical terms or tools to him. Raph is simple; give him a lighter version of all that.
◇Sometimes he wasn't happy that you declined meetings because of studying or lectures. Hey! He also needs attention sometimes D:
Donatello
◇Donnie is really proud of you, even if he doesn't express it in words every day.
◇But as a reward for your hard work, he'll fine-tune the devices you use for practice or build something helpful.
◇He appreciates your genuine interest in understanding difficult concepts and your ability for critical thinking. You don't even know how much he needed someone like you in his life, looking at his family.
◇Despite your enthusiasm and intelligence, he thinks you might overly stress about grades and perfectionism, which in the long run can lead to stress and burnout. So, he often forces you to take a break in his lab, sipping mint-flavored coffee.
◇It's also his small revenge for taking him away from his work on new inventions when he hasn't slept for two days in a row, lmao.
◇But if it's not spending time with him, the guy will go through all your material at the moment to make cheat sheets with the most important information.
◇You pose an intellectual challenge for him and keep him on his toes, but he always enjoys discussing and exploring different perspectives on a topic with you, even though he leans more towards technological knowledge than biological.
◇However, despite his intelligence, Donnie in those moments can be a bit 'know-it-all' and doesn't always consider the opinions or feelings of other people, or even the actual facts.
Michelangelo
◇You won't convince me he wouldn't be initially confused; I mean, he's the least interested in medical topics.
◇But as soon as you start explaining, he'll immediately admit that he's impressed and that he's really proud of you!
◇He'll always mention how much he appreciates your determination to achieve your dreams!
◇Personally, I have a headcanon that Mikey wants to become one of the most recognizable artists, so he roughly knows how frustrating it is when something doesn't work out.
◇In a way, I think Mikey sees you as his role model, so feel proud to be compared to Lou Jitsu :D
◇Mikey sometimes worries a lot about your mental health after lectures. So, expect many long conversations about self-care.
◇Being the youngest of the brothers, he got a lot of attention, so he'll often be jealous of how much time you spend at school and with human friends rather than with him. He knows it's immature behavior, but he can't help it!

I was gonna throw this in a list of hcs but actually I wanna give it its own post bc I'm very normal about Widow and what's been done to her
I know the more widely accepted idea is that Widow has some inhuman strength and agility due to all the procedures she went through, but what if it's actually the opposite? Her blood flow is so slow her body barely gets the minimum amount of oxygen through it to survive. It makes her lethargic and chronically exhausted because she's always on that fine line between surviving and dead. It helps her keep deadly still when sniping, with great results as far at that goes, but on the flip side a burst of physical activity while running from one place to another on an assignment exerts her body to the point of agony. There's always a team of doctors and days upon days of physiotherapy waiting at Talon's hq, but that doesn't really erase the pain.
There's nanites flowing through her system but they don't really work. Not like they work for Angela or even Moira because they're not there to heal her, they're just there to keep her body from collapsing in on itself.
Her blood flow is so fucked she has pretty much zero temperature regulation and any environment that's too hot or too cold or spikes in temperature really screw with her. And she can barely even feel it until it's too late and she's either dizzy to the point of fainting or can barely move. (Yes I see the cinematic of her wearing basically nothing in the tundra. Yes I'm ignoring that detail and saying her uniforms are made to help with that thank you.)
Her lack of emotions was a carefully crafted mix of psychology work and meds specifically made for her that by this point keep her body going just as much as every other bit of "maintenance" she needs on a regular basis to survive. It doesn't always work. The human mind is great and complex and frankly she would sometimes prefer it not to be because whenever a strong emotion manages to sneak past all the walls built in her mind it leaves her frustrated and more exhausted than she already is. She can still make connections, have likes and dislikes, but anything particularly strong is like an unwelcome shock to an already fragile system.
But Talon doesn't really care because she's their perfect sniper and at the end of the day all the pain that comes as a consequence is only there to make her stronger.
And to top it off, Moira loathes how Ameliè turned out.
She didn't have that much of a hands on role in the making of Widowmaker, she's neither a psychologist nor a surgeon or any other kind of doctor that could do all of that, but she has been sort of an overseer to it. She's the one handling the regular procedures Widow needs to survive and the one taking note of how she handles one thing or another. And she hates all of it.
Moira used to be proud of Widowmaker, but after years of seeing basically a dead woman constantly walk the line of barely even alive, she realised that this is the complete opposite of what her idea of going against the limitations of the human body used to be. If Widow was to ever stop taking the fistful of daily meds or the medical procedures needed to keep her body going she would simply die, and even Moira can despise something that cruel.

All the books I reviewed in 2023 (Nonfiction)
Tumblr media
Next Tuesday (December 5), I'm at Flyleaf Books in Chapel Hill, NC, with my new solarpunk novel The Lost Cause, which 350.org's Bill McKibben called "The first great YIMBY novel: perceptive, scientifically sound, and extraordinarily hopeful."
Tumblr media
It's that time of year again, when I round up all the books I reviewed for my newsletter in the previous year. I posted 21 reviews last year, covering 31 books (there are two series in there!). I also published three books of my own last year (two novels and one nonfiction). A busy year in books!
Every year, these roundups remind me that I did actually manager to get a lot of reading done, even if the list of extremely good books that I didn't read is much longer than the list of books I did read. I read many of these books while doing physiotherapy for my chronic pain, specifically as audiobooks I listened to on my underwater MP3 player while doing my daily laps at the public pool across the street from my house.
After many years of using generic Chinese waterproof MP3s players – whose quality steadily declined over a decade – I gave up and bought a brand-name player, a Shokz Openswim. So far, I have no complaints. Thanks to reader Abbas Halai for recommending this!
https://shokz.com/products/openswim
I load up this gadget with audiobook MP3s bought from Libro.fm, a fantastic, DRM-free alternative to Audible, which is both a monopolist and a prolific wage-thief with a documented history of stealing from writers:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/07/25/can-you-hear-me-now/#acx-ripoff
All right, enough with the process notes, on to the reviews!
Tumblr media
NONFICTION
I. The Once and Future Sex by Eleanor Kaneaga
Tumblr media
A history of gender and sex in the medieval age, describing the weird and horny ways of medieval Europeans, which are far gnarlier and more complicated than the story we get from "traditionalists" who want us to believe that their ideas about gender roles reflect a fixed part of human nature, and that modern attitudes are an attempt to rewrite history:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/17/ren-faire/#going-medieval
II. Pirate Enlightenment by David Graeber
Tumblr media
In the early 18th century, the Zana-Malata people – a new culture created jointly by pirates from around the world and Malagasy – came to dominate the island. They brought with them the democratic practices of pirate ships (where captains were elected and served at the pleasure of their crews) and the matriarchal traditions of some Malagasy, creating a feminist, anarchist "Libertalia." Graeber retrieves and orders the history of this Libertalia from oral tradition, primary source documents, and records from around the world. Taken together, it's a tale that is rollicking and romantic, but also hilarious and eminently satisfying.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/24/zana-malata/#libertalia
III. A Hacker's Mind by Bruce Schneier
Tumblr media
Schneier broadens his frame to consider all of society's rules – its norms, laws and regulations – as a security system, and then considers all the efforts to change those rules through a security lens, framing everything from street protests to tax-cheating as "hacks." This leaves us with two categories: hacks by the powerful to increase their power; and hacks by everyone else to take power away from the powerful.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/02/06/trickster-makes-the-world/#power-play
IV. Responding to the Right by Nathan J Robinson
Tumblr media
Robinson describes conservativism as a comforting, fixed ideology that allows its adherents to move through the world without having to question themselves: you broke the law, so you're guilty. No need to ask if the law was just or unjust. This sidelines sticky moral dilemmas: no need for judges to ask if something is good or fair – merely whether it is "original" to the Constitution. No need for a CEO to ask whether a business plan is moral – only whether it is "maximizing shareholder benefit." Robinson anatomizes the most effective parts of conservative rhetoric and exhorts his leftist comrades to learn from it, and put it to better use.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/02/14/nathan-robinson/#arguendo
V. A Collective Bargain by Jane McAlevey
Tumblr media
An extraordinary book that is one part history lesson, one part case-study, two parts how-to manual, one part memoir, and one million parts call to action. McAlevey devotes the early chapters to the rise and fall of labor protections in America, explaining how the wealthy mounted a sustained, expensive, obsessive fight to smash union power. She moves into a series of case-studies of workers who tried to organize unions under these increasingly inhospitable rules and conditions. The second half of the book is two case studies of mass strikes that succeeded in spite of even stiffer opposition. For McAlevey, saving America is just a scaled up version of the union organizer’s day-job.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/23/a-collective-bargain/
VI. Open Circuits by Windell Oskay and Eric Schlaepfer
Tumblr media
A drop-dead gorgeous collection of photos of electronic components, painstakingly cross-sectioned and polished. The photos illustrate layperson-friendly explanations of what each component does, how it is constructed, and why. Perhaps you've pondered a circuit board and wondered about the colorful, candy-shaped components soldered to it. It's natural to assume that these are indivisible, abstract functional units, a thing that is best understood as a reliable and deterministic brick that can be used to construct a specific kind of wall. Peering inside these sealed packages reveals another world, a miniature land where things get simpler – and more complex.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/14/hidden-worlds/#making-the-invisible-visible-and-beautiful
VII. Doppelganger by Naomi Klein
Tumblr media
This is a very odd book. It is also a very, very good book. The premise – exploring the divergence between Naomi Klein and Naomi Wolf, with whom she is often confused – is a surprisingly sturdy scaffold for an ambitious, wide-ranging exploration of this very frightening moment of polycrisis and systemic failure. For Klein, the transformation of Wolf from liberal icon – Democratic Party consultant and Lean-In-type feminist icon – to rifle-toting Trumpling with a regular spot on the Steve Bannon Power Hour is an entrypoint to understanding the mirror world. How did so many hippie-granola yoga types turn into vicious eugenicists whose answer to "wear a mask to protect the immunocompromised" is "they should die"?
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/05/not-that-naomi/#if-the-naomi-be-klein-youre-doing-just-fine
VIII. Your Face Belongs to Us by Kashmir Hill
Tumblr media
A tell-all history of Clearview AI, the creepy facial recognition company whose origins are mired in far-right politics, off-the-books police misconduct, sales to authoritarian states and sleazy one-percenter one-upmanship. Facial recognition is now so easy to build that – Hill says – we're unlikely to abolish it, despite all the many horrifying ways that FR could fuck up our societies.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/20/steal-your-face/#hoan-ton-that
IX. Blood In the Machine by Brian Merchant
Tumblr media
The definitive history of the Luddites, and the clearest analysis of the automator's playbook, where "entrepreneurs'" lawless extraction from workers is called "innovation" and "inevitable." Luddism has been steadily creeping into pro-labor technological criticism, as workers and technology critics reclaim the term and its history, which is a rich and powerful tale of greed versus solidarity, slavery versus freedom. Luddites are not – and have never been – anti-technology. Rather, they are pro-human, and see production as a means to an end: broadly shared prosperity. The automation project says it's about replacing humans with machines, but over and over again – in machine learning, in "contactless" delivery, in on-demand workforces – the goal is to turn humans into machines.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/26/enochs-hammer/#thats-fronkonsteen
X. Technofeudalism by Yanis Varoufakis
Tumblr media
Varoufakis makes an excellent case that capitalism died a decade ago, turning into a new form of feudalism: technofeudalism. A feudal society is one organized around people who own things, charging others to use them to produce goods and services. In a feudal society, the most important form of income isn't profit, it's rent. Varoufakis likens shopping on Amazon to visiting a bustling city center filled with shops run by independent capitalists. However, all of those capitalists are subservient to a feudal lord: Jeff Bezos, who takes 51 cents out of every dollar they bring in, and furthermore gets to decide which products they can sell and how those products must be displayed. The postcapitalist, technofeudal world isn't a world without capitalism, then. It's a world where capitalists are subservient to feudalists ("cloudalists" in Varoufakis's thesis), as are the rest of us the cloud peons
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/28/cloudalists/#cloud-capital
XI. Underground Empire by Henry Farrell and Abraham Newman
Tumblr media
Two political scientists tell the story of how global networks were built through accidents of history, mostly by American corporations and/or the American state. The web was built by accident, but the spider at its center was always the USA. At various junctures since the Cold War, American presidents, spies and military leaders have noticed this web and tugged at it. A tariff here, a sanction there, then an embargo. The NSA turns the internet into a surveillance grid and a weapon of war. The SWIFT system is turned into a way to project American political goals around the world – first by blocking transactions for things the US government disfavors, then to cut off access for people who do business with people who do things that the US wants stopped. Political science, done right, has the power to reframe your whole understanding of events around you. Farrell and Newman set out a compelling thesis, defend it well, and tell a fascinating tale.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/10/10/weaponized-interdependence/#the-other-swifties
XII. How Infrastructure Works by Deb Chachra
Tumblr media
A hopeful, lyrical – even beautiful – hymn to the systems of mutual aid we embed in our material world, from sewers to roads to the power grid. It's a book that will make you see the world in a different way – forever. It's a bold engineering vision, one that fuses Chachra's material science background, her work as an engineering educator, her activism as an anti-colonialist and feminist. The way she lays it out is just…breathtaking.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/10/17/care-work/#charismatic-megaprojects
Tumblr media
Like I said, this has been a good year in books for me, and it included three books of my own:
I. Red Team Blues (novel, Tor Books US, Head of Zeus UK)
Tumblr media
Martin Hench is 67 years old, single, and successful in a career stretching back to the beginnings of Silicon Valley. He lives and roams California in a very comfortable fully-furnished touring bus, The Unsalted Hash, that he bought years ago from a fading rock star. He knows his way around good food and fine drink. He likes intelligent women, and they like him back often enough. Martin is a—contain your excitement—self-employed forensic accountant, a veteran of the long guerilla war between people who want to hide money, and people who want to find it. He knows computer hardware and software alike, including the ins and outs of high-end databases and the kinds of spreadsheets that are designed to conceal rather than reveal. He’s as comfortable with social media as people a quarter his age, and he’s a world-level expert on the kind of international money-laundering and shell-company chicanery used by Fortune 500 companies, mid-divorce billionaires, and international drug gangs alike. He also knows the Valley like the back of his hand, all the secret histories of charismatic company founders and Sand Hill Road VCs. Because he was there at all the beginnings. Now he’s been roped into a job that’s more dangerous than anything he’s ever agreed to before—and it will take every ounce of his skill to get out alive.
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250865847/red-team-blues
II. The Internet Con: How to Seize the Means of Computation (nonfiction, Verso)
Tumblr media
We can – we must – dismantle the tech platforms. We must to seize the means of computation by forcing Silicon Valley to do the thing it fears most: interoperate. Interoperability will tear down the walls between technologies, allowing users to leave platforms, remix their media, and reconfigure their devices without corporate permission. Interoperability is the only route to the rapid and enduring annihilation of the platforms. The Internet Con is the disassembly manual we need to take back our internet.
https://www.versobooks.com/products/3035-the-internet-con
III. The Lost Cause (novel, Tor Books US, Head of Zeus UK)
Tumblr media
For young Americans a generation from now, climate change isn't controversial. It's just an overwhelming fact of life. And so are the great efforts to contain and mitigate it. Entire cities are being moved inland from the rising seas. Vast clean-energy projects are springing up everywhere. Disaster relief, the mitigation of floods and superstorms, has become a skill for which tens of millions of people are trained every year. The effort is global. It employs everyone who wants to work. Even when national politics oscillates back to right-wing leaders, the momentum is too great; these vast programs cannot be stopped in their tracks.
But there are still those Americans, mostly elderly, who cling to their red baseball caps, their grievances, their huge vehicles, their anger. To their "alternative" news sources that reassure them that their resentment is right and pure and that "climate change" is just a giant scam. And they're your grandfather, your uncle, your great-aunt. And they're not going anywhere. And they’re armed to the teeth. The Lost Cause asks: What do we do about people who cling to the belief that their own children are the enemy? When, in fact, they're often the elders that we love?
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250865939/the-lost-cause
Tumblr media
I wrote nine books during lockdown, and there's plenty more to come. The next one is The Bezzle, a followup to Red Team Blues, which comes out in February:

Ghost Swap treat!
Ghost Swap treat for @doctor-yoshi-soul who asked for the following prompt:
doctor-yoshi-soul: Yomiel's jail time (and/or how other characters deal with it);
Thankfully I already had some drabbles of it among my notes, so I hope you enjoy them!
Jowd and Yomiel
Jowd was sitting down in front of the visitor’s center from prison, waiting for the blond man to come. It had become an habit for the detective to come and see the man who started everything. Jowd knew Yomiel’s pain, more than anything else in the world, after all, he, himself, had been behind bars, feeling sorry for himself and wanting nothing more than to end his pathetic existence. He didn’t want Yomiel to have the same thoughts, so the detective kept coming to talk to him about it, help keep his head in the right place.
As soon as the blond man appeared, Jowd opened a warm, friendly smile, though Yomiel’s face retained his sorrowful expression. He rolled on his wheelchair and positioned himself in front of the detective, facing him from the opposite side of the glass window.
“Detective.” He said in a calm, neutral tone.
“Yomiel.” The detective replied back, smiling at the man. “How is your recovery doing?” He glanced briefly at the wheelchair.
“Oh?” Yomiel’s gaze followed the detective’s, looking into his own wheelchair. “It’s… going okay I guess. The physiotherapist says I will be able to walk again if we keep doing the physiotherapy sessions, though right now my legs aren’t strong enough to walk on my own yet. Everything hurts and even if I do my recovery well as the doctor says, I will still suffer chronic pain for a long time to come, maybe all my life. But that’s a small price to pay, for all the trouble I caused everyone.”
Jowd couldn’t see his eyes behind the dark lenses, but he could guess Yomiel’s gaze darkened as he recalled the events of that fateful night.
“Yomiel…” The detective started, sounding calm. “I already told you. I forgave you. For everything.”
Yomiel simply shrugged, lifting his gaze back to the man in front of him.
“Why, Jowd?”
“I forgave you because I saw that you were truly sorry for the role you played in what happened. It’s as simple as that. How can I unforgive what has already been forgiven? It is over. It is done. Why do you doubt that? Why do you question it?”
Yomiel shakes his head and looks away from him. His shoulders come up in a half-shrug, as if the answer is obvious and it just hasn’t occurred to the detective yet.
“Because I don’t deserve your forgiveness.”
Jowd should probably have expected it. Yomiel wasn't really that different from him.
“What do you want me to say, Yomiel? That I finally got my revenge on you? You're the one behind bars now, thinking he doesn't deserve a second chance because he did something awful. You're feeling the exact same pain I felt, during these past years. And yet, seeing you like that... It doesn't bring me joy. Not when I understand what you're feeling, more than anyone else. Revenge is a pitiful thing that doesn't bring any satisfaction. You should know that, even more than me.”
Yomiel lifted his head to stare at the man sitting across from him. It was hard to read his expression behind the shades covering his eyes, but it was as if Jowd could feel the sting of pain and guilt behind them. They were too familiar for the detective.
“Jowd, I took your daughter hostage. I manipulated her to alter her contraption and kill her own mother. Your wife. I manipulated her again and wanted to make her kill you. You're saying you forgive that?”
Jowd shook his head.
“And I have all the right to be mad at you for that. But this Kamila haven't experienced any of it. If she remembered, then I would find it more difficult to forgive you for that, yes. But she doesn't. Neither does Alma. You did nothing to them, in this new present. So why should I be mad at something that didn't happen this time around?”
Yomiel chuckled inwardly, refusing to let Jowd's words get to him. He couldn't understand how this man could forgive him, after everything he did.
“Jowd—” The detective didn't let him continue.
“You are not that same man anymore, Yomiel. Why is it so hard for you to see that? I saw the way you helped in the end. Saw how much you tried to help Lynne, the girl you were so desperately trying to ruin. You risked your own life for her. That's when I saw that the Manipulator was gone, dead. You are a new man now Yomiel. Rejoyce this fact... And live your life. The woman you love is waiting for you, just outside these bars.”
Yomiel felt tears coming to his eyes, but he refused to let them fall. He didn't want to break down in front of the detective, didn't want him to see his most vulnerable side. Even with all these words, Yomiel refused to believe he was worthy of anything, let alone Jowd's forgiveness.
“She doesn't know the monster I became. She doesn't deserve me. I—”
“Yomiel!” It was the first time Jowd raised his voice since this conversation started.
“Haven't you listened to what I just said? You are not that man anymore. She doesn't know and she never will. It shouldn't matter.”
And yet, to Yomiel, it still did. It still hurt to know what he had been able to do, when left at the bottom of despair.
-------------------
Yomiel and FianSissel
Sissel had come to visit Yomiel, just like she always did, everyday, ever since he was arrested. Ever since the incident, Yomiel had a stranger air of self-deprecation and guilt and he was far from the man she once knew. Sure, Yomiel wasn’t the cheerful, optimistic type, not when his life had been trauma conga line, one after the other, with an alcoholic mother, an absent father and all the bullying the suffered when they were both in school, but still, he wasn’t so down like…. that. She could understand why though, but even so…
“Sissel…” Yomiel let out a sad sigh as he stared at her through the other side of the glass window. “Why would you waste your time waiting for me? You deserve someone better.”
Sissel felt her throat tightening at his words. Her heart clenching inside.
“What makes you think that?”
“I threatened a child, Sissel! I could have killed her!”
“You wouldn’t.”
Yomiel shook his head.
“You don't know that.”
She lifted her eyes back at him with fierce determination.
“You're not that kind of person, Yomiel. You wouldn't have hurt that child.”
Yomiel looked back at her, chuckling to himself and shaking his head. Thinking how he manipulated Kamila to alter her own contraption to kill her mother.
“What if I did? Would you still think that?” He blurted out before he could stop himself. Sissel stood firm, however.
“I know you. You wouldn’t.” The fierce determination in her eyes as she said this was enough to confirm to Yomiel that if she knew the truth of that night, of what he did... She would never forgive him. And that thought was like a knife being twisted in his heart.
“Yomiel... You risked your life to save that child... Detective Jowd told me. You could have died in that park! You saved her! You are a good man! D-Do you know what could have happened if you died there? If you... If you died there... I-I would’ve—”
Her voice broke as tears started to form in her eyes.
“STOP!” He suddenly yelled, looking into her eyes. “Don't say it. Please don’t.”
“I’ve—” She sobbed.
“Sissel, DON’T!” He knew what was coming. He didn’t want to hear it. She lowered her eyes, finally letting her tears fall,
“I would prefer to die than to live in a world without you.”
As soon as she said those words, Yomiel couldn't help it. Looking at her, he could see in his mind the exact scene he saw when he got home. Of her cold body, devoid of her smile, completely lifeless. The shock and the awful realization hitting him when he saw the suicide note. Yomiel immediately broke down in tears, sobbing uncontrollably as the memories flooded him.
“Yomiel…” Sissel tried to get his attention back. Damn it, how much she wished she could hold his hand. He couldn’t reply, he couldn’t say anything, he could just sob.
“I-I'm sorry Sissel I can’t— I need a minute, please…”
Sissel felt her heart clenching in her chest. She didn’t want her first talk with him to be like this... But she respected his wish and stood up from the chair. “I’ll come later.” And she walked off the room. Just as she was outside, she brought her handkerchief from her purse and allowed herself to cry, not wanting to break down in front of him to make things worse.
“How did it go?” Detective Jowd asked when Sissel came out, sniffing.
“I... I hoped it would be better... I made him cry.” She said quietly. Jowd raised an eyebrow.
“Really? What did you say?” Sissel sniffed, looking at the detective.
“He asked me why I was waiting for him. He kept insisting he wasn't a good man. I told him I believed he would never hurt that girl, that he even risked his life to save her...” She gulped down a sob. “I told him that if he had died... I would prefer to die than to live without him.”
Ah. Jowd immediately understood why Yomiel broke down now. The fact that he was so immersed in his guilt to have insisted he wasn't a good man was such a familiar feeling to Jowd. Which seemed rather ironic to have his own former enemy in the same situation as him.
“He's just going through a lot right now, Sissel. Give him some time, he'll get over it.” Sissel sniffed again.
“I know. Thank you so much for all the support, Detective Jowd.” The detective put a large hand over the petite woman's shoulder. “It's the least I can do. I could have killed him that day in the park. I'm still really sorry for that.”
“It's okay, detective. What matters in the end is that you are helping him now. Let's not think about what could have happened. What matters is now.”
“You could tell that to him.” Jowd said with a bittersweet smile. He was tired of telling this to Yomiel, maybe he would listen if it came from Miss Sissel instead. “If you ever need someone to talk to, you can always call me or Alma, okay? You're not alone anymore, Sissel.”
Sissel smiled weakly, nodding as she wiped her tears. “Thank you so much detective.”
“You're welcome.”

I don't know if you accept requests like thus, but could I ask for hange hcs or aot hcs as a regular students? I would like to know their routine and hobbies!
Hello how are youu?
Yes of course, our ask box is open, all requests are welcome. I’m just going to assume these are uni students you are asking for :)
Note: I am British so the uni content is based off what I know takes place in England.
AOT Characters As Students
Tumblr media
eren yeager - that student who either sleeps in the back of the class or doesn’t attend at all yet surprisingly he gets decent marks. He is very nonchalant about everything related to studying. His revision method is procrastinate then cram it all in the night before the exam. I can see him studying something like marketing as a major. This man will never stay on campus longer than he needs to. The second the lecture is done he just disappears.
mikasa ackerman - she is the quiet student who gets along with everyone and generally gets good marks. Will tutor others and shares notes to the people who are not in. Will sign you in to the lecture when you ditch the lecture. Somehow she manages to juggle uni and two part time jobs AND still have time to hang out. I can see her studying physiotherapy.
armin arlert - we all know this boy is a little nerd. He lives in the library and self studies other majors whilst studying his own of criminology. He takes his studies very seriously and is a well known top student. Is there every lecture right at the front with his two iPads, not to show off but because he actually uses both at the same time. Out of everyone Armin has the most extracurricular activities, he tutors and works part time, he also volunteers during the holidays.
jean kirstein - he is a mix of Eren and Armin. Sometimes he’s the slob at the back of the class and sometimes he’s the nerd at the front. His whole year just fluctuates up and down. But overall he gets good marks and that’s enough for him. He definitely thinks highly of himself because he studies law but he has Connie and Sasha to bring him back down to Earth. He is on the football team and the baseball team. He’s known as the guy who slide tackled into the goal post and Connie will never let him live it down.
sasha braus - that student who eats in the back of the class and brings the most outrageous meals to try and eat sneakily. She has a whole vlog where she has mukbangs during her lectures. Somehow never gets caught and is always praised for being a good student by the clueless professor. Despite all the snacking, she is a decent student and does try her best to complete assignments and contributes to the workshops. She may act dense but she is quite capable of both working and studying well. Definitely no extras for her, she needs her rest.
connie springer - he is the class clown hands down and all the joking around shows on his results. Sometimes he can’t even scrape a pass but at the end of the year, by some miracle, he passes and celebrates like he was given student of the year. Plays for the basketball team despite his height issues. Let’s face it, he’s there for the parties not the studying so imagine the shock when he found our civil engineering was not as easy as he thought.
erwin smith - the student who always always asks a shit ton of questions and confuses everyone who thought they understood. Takes his role as top student to heart and will compete against everyone. He will flip out if he doesn’t get the highest marks. Submits his assignments in the next day because he’s a fucking swot like that. He tutors but most of his students are scared of him and he revels in that. Is a control freak and knows it. His rich businessman’s son vibes fits well with his accounting and finance major.
hange zoe - that student who barges into the lecture room late and with majority of the items of their room. Smart af but the cooky-ness and general weird behaviour overshadows it. Hange is that student who will be extra and bring in a typewriter or find the craziest topics to do their assignments on. Loves the idea of studying what was and how it came to be so picked anthropology to major in. Has their hands in every extra club ever. Always, always runs everywhere, I don’t think hange knows what walking even is!
levi ackerman - the grumpy lone wolf student who HATES group work or any human interaction yet somehow is the most popular guy in uni. Even the first years can’t help but swoon at the sight of him. The fact he studies history just makes him even more attractive to everyone so he purposely goes out of his way to be unapproachable. He has his close friend, and I mean just one friend, and the rest are just extras in his life. Never joins in with anything fun or exciting and definitely no sports club but taekwondo does tickle his fancy.
- Kiki.

A couple of questions?
If you were trapped in a room for 24h whould you rather be with a mass shooter or a serial killer?
What do you think Eric"s and Dylans reaction to Dylans 20th birthday aka 9/11?
Any thoughts on Ethan Crumbley and the whole trial?
How much did Whitmans tumor play into the shooting in your personal opinion?
Thank you ! This is a fun ask to write about.
1. Mass shooter lmao
Because it's likely an avoidant teenage boy with emotional issues or a dude still stuck in his prepubescence stage in the room and that makes two of us. It would just be awkward. What are they gonna do, shoot me? The situation can be diffused by conversing the many reasons why that's unethical. It would either lead to us settling it out and no one gets hurt or a fist fight to the death after they won't listen so I grab their gun and beat them up with it
2. They'd either be excited or curious
If they hadn't grown over their edgy misanthrope phase then I think those boneheads would celebrate by lighting up fireworks and snickering like Beevus and Butthead. If they have matured, then I think they would see it as interesting, perhaps even research about it and follow the news. Maybe they'll also turn it into an inside gag where they think it's coincidental or something.
3. His parents are neglectful
I do believe his parents deserved to be incarcerated for involuntary man-slaughter because then again Ethan was still under their responsibility. The fact that a kid as young as 15 had perpetrated such an attack already speaks volumes on the neglect and parental duty his parents underperformed in, even failed. It's reckless for anyone to allow their child, who is clearly underaged, to have such easy access to firearms. Plus, I find it rather odd that his parents would deny to disclose documents and records that could provide more insight on his mental health and upbringing. It's pretty shady to do not help your son and instead allow him to speak for himself without solid and backed-up proof. It just makes it look like they don't want to talk about the reasons as to why their son had done such a crime, maybe it's because they play a role in that.
4. I think it amplified his already declining mental state
My brother who's in physiotherapy helped me on this so props to him
Charles has a malignant tumor (cancerous) located in his dietemporal lobe, which affects his thalamus. The thalamus is crucial for relaying motor and sensory information from the brain to the body, and it processes all information before transmitting it to the cerebral cortex. The thalamus is also connected to the limbic system, which is involved in processing and regulating emotions. As a result, the tumor has the ability to amplify his violent tendencies and emotional irregularities, impacting both his emotional state and his body's physiological responses to threats and aggression.
While the tumor may have contributed to his violent behavior, it's likely not the sole cause. Charles endured a childhood of abuse, which may have already significantly impacted his mental health. The tumor likely worsened his pre-existing mental issues, hindering him from properly coping and regulating his emotions.

Relationships
>> FAMILY TREE: Lertchai (father, Thai) // Asmara (mother, Indonesian) >> PETS: None >> ROMANCES:
Rachi has many past lovers, though none of them ever stuck around. Their role in the relationship was an act, their feelings for Rachi non-existent, with their priorities lying mainly in the man's body and what it could do for them. Break-ups came out of nowhere, with Rachi on the receiving end of all of them, causing the man to become despondent when it came to finding a partner. He'd often complain to Dan, who has heard every. single. one. of Rachi's love-life and sex-life stories.
Currently, Rachi's 'romances' include a plethora of men from the escort services he uses. He's found out that while it can by costly, he'd rather sleep with people who he won't become emotionally attached to in order to spare himself any further heartache. Plus, escorts are usually fine with his more devious desires, and are willing to play with him in the way he likes.
>> PLATONIC:
Dan Sangchareon, 30M, childhood best friend
Rachi and Dan have been best friends since childhood. They know each other better than anyone, from their fears to their desires. They're incredibly close, with people around them often mistaking them as being in a relationship.
Chai Sarinawat, 23M, friend
Rachi met Chai at the younger man's workplace at the time, where he was working behind a bar at a nightclub Rachi visited on a whim. They got to talking - there's no better person than a bartender to talk to - and hit it off quickly. Chai was drawn in by Rachi's confidence and carefree spirit, and Rachi immediately felt a need to protect and watch over the young, down-on-his-luck man. They have a good relationship, jokingly calling each other "mommy(mummy)" and "baby/son/child". Rachi helped Chai get a job as Dan's assistant, after seeing him struggle to make ends meet. He knows that Chai has been in an abusive relationship and is terrified of seeing his ex, but does not know to what extent.
>> BACKSTORY:
Rachi was born to Lertchai and Asmara in Bangkok, Thailand. His father owns the 'Victory Gym' company and manages various gyms and fitness centres across Thailand and has a few across Asia, including Japan, Malaysia, and Indonesia. His mother is a women's only fitness instructor. The two bonded over a passion for fitness and exercise, keeping in touch even when Lertchai was travelling to other countries in Asia to manage his company.
The two eventually fell in love and married, having a destination wedding in Indonesia and another ceremony in Thailand.
When Asmara was pregnant with Rachi, the tests all came out that she and Lertchai were having a baby girl. They had the name 'princess' picked out in Indonesian and Thai; however, Rachi came out a boy. Lertchai changed his name to Mongkut instead, meaning 'crown'. As Rachi grew up, his mother recognised immediately that her little boy was a little princess too, and so gave him the nickname 'Putri'. Rachi is only called Putri by his mother, Mongkut by his father, and introduces himself as Rachini or Rachi to everyone else.
He has a good relationship with his parents, who are based in Bangkok but travel a lot throughout Asia for his father's company. While he doesn't like working out at the gym, he does love cardio fitness like his mother, helping instruct yoga and pilates classes. His father also helped him open his own studio in Thailand, where he's currently building his career as a trainer for models and actresses, as well as occasionally providing light fitness services for others. Extras
>> FEARS: Rodents >> PHOBIAS: Bugs, especially cockroaches >> HANDICAPS: N/A >> MENTAL DISORDERS: N/A >> PHYSICAL DISEASES: N/A >> PREDISPOSITIONS: Alcoholism

Decent week for my 31st birthday.
Got promoted at work to a senior physiotherapy role and got a 10% bump in pay.
Also going to start working regular overtime to make another 25% ontop of that each week.
Finally feels like things are moving in the right direction to becoming financially stable after going into crazy debt to buy a house and have a huge wedding all within a year 😅
Also lost 5kgs in the past 5 weeks so progressing back towards my goal of 80kgs with 7 weeks to go.

Addercloud AU Ranks
First of all, the three main differences:
Medicine cat -> Medic
Queen -> Nurturer
Kit -> Kitten
These were changed because of uncomfortable cultural implications, a lack of gender neutrality and just not liking the word respectively.
Any rank left blank is either the same as it is in the books, or the same as it is explained in an earlier paragraph.
Thunderclowder
Leader
Deputy
Medic
Knight - Similar to the senior warriors in canon, but with an official rank and ceremony. This rank is earned after a big accomplishment - such as saving another cat from death or gaining a huge scar - and proving that they have wisdom and experience. A cat doesn't have to be a Knight to be made deputy, but they almost always are.
Warrior
Apprentice - Apprenticeships start at 6 moons, with a few exceptions: unusually large kittens may be apprenticed early or weak, sick or injured kittens may be apprenticed late.
Nurturer - Very similar to the permanent queens in canon, but slightly different. These cats are trained in basic herbs as well as physiotherapy and counselling. Essentially, the medic recommends a treatment, the nurturers make sure it is seen through. They take care of the kittens, elders and anyone who is sick or injured.
Kitten
Elder - A quirk of Thunderclowder early on is that cats cannot just retire, they have to wait for the leader and deputy to deem that they have earned it. Thankfully, Bluestar and Redtail were very lenient about this, granting permission to all who asked, but previous leaders like Oakstar haven't been so kind.
Shadowclowder
Leader
Deputy
Medic
Warrior
Wrangler - Shadowclowder's territory is the most prone to beasts (we'll get there when we get there), so specific cats are trained in knowledge of the many kinds of creature and how to deal with them. Wranglers are well respected because their job is just as, if not more, dangerous than being a warrior.
Camp Guard - These cats are similar to warriors, but they stick close to the camp, keeping it safe from beasts and other clans. Some of these cats are also diurnal, unlike the rest of their clan who are nocturnal, and watch over the camp during the day. Despite the importance of their job, there is a stereotype that cats choose to become Camp Guards because they're too scared to fight in battles.
Apprentice - Apprenticeship age is not fixed, and instead being decided by if a kitten can complete a series of small challenges set by a few of the warriors. This usually resulted in apprentices being 5-8 moons when they are ready. Brokenstar encouraged his followers to declare kittens ready even if they didn't complete all the assessments, pushing the age lower. Apprentices typically graduate after 7 moons of training, so 12 to 15 moons.
Kitten
Elder
- You'll notice that there's no Nurturer rank, this is because all cats are expected to help take care of the kits and elders to equal lengths. However, there is a growing idea among the warriors that they shouldn't have to, which Brokenstar exploits.
Riverclowder
Leader
Deputy
Medic
Shore Warrior - Due to their close history with Windclowder, Riverclowder now shares the separated warrior roles. Shore Warriors live in the Shore Camp with the medic, younger apprentices, nurturers, kittens and elders. They specialise in hunting on land and defensive battle moves, protecting the weak in the clan. Most can swim, but being on dry land is what they prefer. Leopardstar was an unusual example of a Shore Warrior who preferred to attack instead of defend.
Tide Warrior - Tide Warriors live in the Island camp with the leader, deputy and older apprentices. They specialise in hunting in water and offensive battle moves, and are usually called on when Riverclowder attacks another clowder. They are fish-like swimmers, who sometimes even claim to prefer being in the water than on land.
Apprentice - Apprentices can start shore training at 4 moons old, but are forbidden from starting tide training until 6 moons old. When an apprentice is 8 moons old, they are given the choice of whether they want to finish training to be a Shore Warrior or a Tide Warrior. Apprentices typically graduate at 12 moons old.
Nurturer
Kitten
Elder
Windclowder
Guide - Windclan's religion is very important to them, so the job of being a spiritual guide has been separated from the medic. with their spiritual guide being even above the leader in power. This is one of the major weaknesses of the clowder, as a guide with malicious intentions can easily declare anything they want to be the words of the earth, making it law.
Leader
Council - Previously, Windclowder had the typical deputy system, but after Mudclaw's rebellion this was changed to the Council system. Instead of a single deputy, the leader and the guide have a group of cats they can turn to. This ensures that there is less bias in decisions and the clan always had a plan for if the leader dies.
Medic - Same as canon, but they are not required to have any sort of spiritual connection.
Tunneller
Moor Runner
Apprentice - Apprentices begin training at 6 Moons. This is a hard rule, with exceptions only being made to delay a severely injured kitten's apprenticeship only until they are healed. Apprentices decide whether they want to be a Moor Runner or a Tunneller at their apprentice ceremony and rarely switch afterwards. Apprentices are expected to train in all four seasons, making them late bloomers who typically graduate at 18 moons.
Kitten
Elder
Skyclowder
Leader
Deputy
Medic
Mediator
Knight - Modern era Skyclowder borrows the knight rank from Thunderclowder, since they're so closely linked. However, Skyclowder is much more lenient with who gets the position, going to any decently experienced warrior.
Warrior
Daylight Warrior
Apprentice - Apprenticeship age is not fixed, instead being decided primarily by the kitten's parents and secondarily by the clan as a whole. Apprentices do not have assigned mentors, instead the whole clan mentors them.
Daylight Apprentice
Nurturer
Kitten
Elder

31 Days Idol Challenge - Day 26: On the Floor
There are actually quite a few photos of Oliver Riedel on the floor (or on the ground, which I have also included here). My top pick is from one of my favourite photo shoots of Rammstein (ok, I will admit I have a lot of favourites, but still): The Rosenrot "fashion" promo shoot by Kasskara Agentur. Oliver's wife dressed up the band for this shoot, and maybe it's just me, but there are so many photos from this session where he looks proud and confident.
As part of this shoot, Mat Hennek and Felix Broede took photos of all the band members lying on the ground, and Oliver's looks so peaceful. I really like this shot of him.
Bonus material: 1) Oliver gets physiotherapy while his dog waits patiently. From the 2019 Europe Stadium Tour, photo by Jens Koch. 2) Oliver relaxing during the recording of Reise, Reise. Photo possibly by Paul Landers. 3) Young Oliver sitting on the floor. Photo by Casper Pfeiffer. 4) Oliver stretching before a show during the LIFAD Tour. Photo by Frédéric Batier. 5) Oliver on the floor most likely in his and Paul's shared dressing room. Unknown photographer, possibly Batier as well. 6) Oliver and Paul's dog Minni in Mexico, screenshot from an official band reel posted during the 2022 North America Stadium Tour. 7) Sad screenshot from the Adieu music video.
