Morse code jewellery inspired by Yuzuru Hanyu 4/?
Adding to this collection, you can now order bracelets that read:
ÈTUDE IN D-SHARP MINOR
ÈTUDE
ROMEO + JULIET
SOMEBODY
These pieces are a little different from my other collections - this set is made with different beads meant to evoke the colour schemes used in Yuzu's costumes for his 2011-2012 season.
All of the listings have options to add charms inspired by each programme. You can order the bracelets separately, in a set of SP + FP, or in a set of all three, including the gala.
There are custom listings available for this collection too if you'd like any of these pieces in the usual range of colours, or if you'd like a custom message inspired by Yuzuru Hanyu coded into a bracelet or necklace!
You can check them all out on Etsy!
Taking a little break from adding to this collection now, so the next update will be 11 May! Let me know which of Yuzu's programmes you'd like to see in bracelet form then!

I was thinking about Yuzu's Romeo & Juliet programs.
The characters in the play are dramatic teenagers. Romeo is reckless in his pursuit for Juliet, Juliet is rebelling however she can, too. They are teenagers who think their love can conquer all and the tragedy is so much more tragic because they essentially needlessly die for each other.
Yuzu's Romeo+Juliet (2011-2012) is very much that side of chaos and rebellion, that fight that never leaves Romeo - the stubborness and relentlessness of someone who will do anything to get what he wants. Yuzu poured so much drama and chaos in R&J. That Worlds 2012 performance is so iconic because he fought and he conquered.
Tumblr media
Romeo&Juliet (2013-2014) is softer, that's portraying much more the love story between Romeo and Juliet, the tenderness and passion they had for each other. The fight and rebellion of the two are not so prominent here. This program is tenderly emotional and tragic.
Tumblr media
I love, love, LOVE how Yuzu managed to make two programs based on the same story to be so wildly different.

Love Against the Wind
In a world where norms and traditions often dictate the paths of love, there are brave hearts that stand against the wind of expectations. This theme, as timeless as love itself, is reflected in countless stories, some of which have endured through the centuries.
Take the classic example of Romeo and Juliet, the paradigm of forbidden love. Their struggle to maintain their love against familial enmity is a passionate testament to how powerful yet tragic love can be when it contradicts societal norms.
Another profound example is found in Greek mythology. The myth of Hyacinthus and Apollo, a homoerotic love story, demonstrates how love transcends the norms of its time. Apollo, the god of light, and Hyacinthus, a mortal prince, share a love that ends in tragedy. Their story is not only a testimony of their love but also an early example of same-sex affection standing against societal expectations.
In more recent history, we find similar examples. King Edward VIII, who abdicated the British throne to marry Wallis Simpson, a divorced American, shows that even kings are not immune to the challenges of love that crosses societal boundaries. Their love was in direct contradiction to the expectations of society and the church, prompting a king to relinquish his throne.
All these examples are linked by a common thread: the courage to face societal headwinds to remain true to love. Whether it's feuding families, social class differences, or same-sex relationships, history shows us that love is often strongest when it fights against adversity. "Love Against the Wind" is not just a theme of the past but also an ongoing story reflected in the lives of many people around the world.

Alright, I want to be fair, cause I sent that ask cause you're a fan of both Yuzu and Shoma and don't really favor one over the other, it seems like...
In what ways do you think Yuzu is a better skater than Shoma?
I am a huge fan of both and the question remains hard because they are such different skaters with such different styles. And I love them both for utterly different reasons. And ofc atm it's easy for me to say Shoma is my favorite competitive skate and Yuzu my favorite retired skater.☺️ But as someone who likes competitions better than any kind of gala stuff I am currently thinking more about Shoma. Though admittedly I am more in the Shoma fandom than in the Yuzu fandom for maybe obvious reason 😅
Again this is a subjective opinion and while I think some things can be better objectively "measured" it also doesn't mean that Shoma is "bad" in comparison or anything.
Let's start with something obvious if you have followed me for the past years. Yuzu is imo a better jumper especially on Toeloop jumps. The height of Yuzu's jumps is better. Yuzu's jump technique is purer or clearer than Shoma's especially on the take-off at Toeloop jumps. We don't have to talk about Yuzu having a miles better Lutz jump. And I also think we don't have to argue about Shoma's take-off technique for the 4F being questionable. I think Shoma's Toejumps though got significantly better from when he first started in seniors vs. now and Shoma's edge jumps like Loop and Salchow aren't significantly worse than Yuzu's. Yuzu's take-off technique is sublime. There is a reason ppl call his jumps "textbook" and I say I agree though there is no official "textbook" and the evaluation of jumps through judges isn't much about whether a jump is textbook. I think Yuzu was a bit undervalued in GOEs throughout his career. His jumps leave nothing to desire. He even fixed his Flip edge over the years.

Tumblr media
I think no one can compare to Yuzu in the transition department. (Not to be mistaken as Shoma doesn't have transitions which is a lie. Shoma has tons as well but not as many) Yuzu had fun to try to include as less cross-overs as possible and thus every step is almost a difficult step and turn which are difficult transition. Just look at Let's Go Crazy and watch only Yuzu's feet, this is an example of extreme difficulty even other programs of Yuzu are hard to match. He unfortunately never got the best evaluation for his efforts in transitions and after the Olympic season this criteria was even removed from the PCS as a standalone criteria (mind you the evaluation was not really coherent to what skaters did anyway). Still a bit sad that LGC wasn't skated competitively to it's full potential. I love LGC.
Now the more subjective part, which is hard because I like Yuzu's style of skating but I also like Shoma's style of skating, but they have a different approach. I would not say one approach is better than the other, but it leads to the impressions that I shared in the "Shoma is better answer" and leads also to what I want to emphasize with Yuzu:
I think Yuzu is better at packaging his programs. I am actually not sure if I find the right words to say what I intend to emphasize here, but let me give it a try. Yuzu has a complete image in mind what he's trying to portray with his programs. It's seen in all details and costume and poses that are memorable and suit the program, it's seldomly repeated in other programs. Shoma's approach is more subtle and more from within him.
Tumblr media
I think Yuzu has a rawer energy, more attack in his skating than Shoma. I think best seen in how he throws himself into the Seimei step sequence and hell breaks lose. The emotions are set free. Same for when I first really noticed Yuzu in Romeo and Juliet 1.0 in 2012 how emotional he skated on the ice. I think he is "better" at letting go of the emotions. It grabs me every time.
And I think that also speaks for what differences grab me in Shoma's and Yuzu's skating. Yuzu's emotions and expression are differently emoted to me than Shoma's. Shoma's skating is like music to me, fascinating and a calmness about it. Yuzu's skating is full commitment and commands you to look at him and the emotions shown grab me. It's different for everyone and I am not sure I can express my feelings into words, but this was a try.

I replied to what I think Shoma does "better" than Yuzu here:

Part 1/?: Amateur Music Analysis of Hanyu Yuzuru's Programs - RJ1.0 & Chopin 3.0
Part 2/? here
Someone on the forum asked:
Hey, I was just contemplating which of my favorite music I’d love to see Yuzu skate to, realized that I’m not sure what kind of music actually fits figure skating. What kind of rhythm makes skating to it easy/hard? Are certain styles or instruments especially fitting because of the nature of the sport itself? What are the qualities that make people go for the warhorses over and over again (aside from them being proven safe)? What do you think? Then again all rules can be broken if one’s willing I’ll always remember the dude at 4CC that skated to iPhone’s default ringtone…
Good question…
Romeo and Juliet 1.0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHa2pXaWC74)
1) Dramatic and impactful intro that culminates in the first intro and only quad in the program.
He successfully grabs the attention of the audience.
2) 1:17 Music calms down for him to enter the spin, but still containing enough dramatic singing for him to utilise with his hands and highlight his spins.
3) 1:32 Calm. He (or the choreographer) deliberately places a jump here to highlight contrast between the loudness (I don’t mean that in the sound sense) of the jump and the silence of the music. Step sequence. The music gradually builds up through the step sequence.
4) 2:30 Music continues to build up and then Yuzu does his famous RJ1.0 fall. 2:51 Music remains softer than the intro but contains suspense, and this fits in very well with the current situation (he has fallen, will he land the 3A3T?) and hence his emoting does not clash with the mood that the music calls for. He throws out the 3A3T.
5) Music builds and builds from 3A3T onwards all the way to the terrific yell before the choreographic sequence.
6) DRAMA. Famous choreographic sequence, ultimately climaxing at the biellman spin.
7) Music suddenly drops into an undercurrent and he does the chest-stabbing before ending the program.
Chopin Ballade No.1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtB2l5KfKkg)
1) Quiet beginning. He strategically holds still so that he can draw the curiosity and attention of the audience via silence and stillness as opposed to using motion.
2) He begins moving and music slowly builds, in an unhurried manner, slightly languid even.
3) 1:10 music suddenly gets a bit louder, he does the spread-eagle, music gets even louder, 4S, music quietens again as he does transitions out.
4) Music builds once again, higher and higher, louder and louder, Yuzu gains speed and intensity, culminating in 4T3T.
5) Music softens slightly, then gets louder again as he matches the music and beat to do the spin. Music quietens again as he goes through the spin positions/variations (sorry not a tech expert).
6) Music is like 2), he does his transitions.
7) 2:26 There is a slight pause in music between 6) and 2:26. Music is louder once again, he does the 3A from counter entry. He enters spin.
8) 2:37 Music gets increasingly intense, his spins are also intense and fast.
9) 2:47 Music culminates, he exits spin and begins his sequence.
10) 2:54 A slight pause but it is very suspenseful, and Yuzu himself is stretched taut like an arrow on a bowstring, ready to shoot out.
11) 2:55 He does his sequence, the notes of the music run quickly and are full of intensity. It gets faster. He enters final spin.
12) Final spin, the notes of the music run more heavily and are less light as they were during the sequence, giving the effect of a dramatic ending. Yuzu punctuates final note with the ending pose.
One of the reasons for choosing a piece might be due to the possibility of separating the music into identifiable sections. For example, in a long program: an intro > gradual buildup > chorus/plateau for step sequence that gradually quietens down for the mid-program pause > interlude for a couple of 2nd half jumps > gradual buildup > DRAMA > end
Another might be that they have sufficient highs and lows that can be used with elements to punctuate and highlight the performance.
I don’t know much about music so forgive any incorrect terms, but dramatic/lyrical (?) music run like stories, except they are written in the language of music notes.
A interesting read about how stories are plotted emotionally: https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2016/07/the-six-main-arcs-in-storytelling-identified-by-a-computer/490733/
Skating a program is literally a skater up on stage to showcase the story they want to tell to the judges and audience. As the article says, Rags to Riches (rise, in FS case, rising slowly throughout) is popular, Cinderella (rise then fall then rise, in FS case, high-low-high like RJ1.0) too. And Oedipus (fall then rise then fall, in FS case, low-high-low). And if you listen, you’ll realise much program music take structures like that (do note the structures mentioned are basic and very general skeletal ones, they have smaller peaks and smaller lows in between the big peaks and big dips like the two programs above). Also, some structures popular in writing may not work in FS since the ‘stories’ are told through different mediums and what works in one may not work in the other.
