5 + 1: Headcanons Editions 💞

I was tagged by the lovely and talented @romirola to share some headcanons and I could never turn down an opportunity like this! Gonna be honest, I have so many headcanons that I can probably make a hundred of these, but!!! I shall narrow down to my 5 (+1) favourites!!!

Without a further ado, here we go!!!

Darlin' has been dealing with ongoing burnout since their senior year of high school. It's followed them through their undergrad to Quinn to them trying to take care of everyone post-Inversion. Being with Sam is the first time in a long time they afforded themselves a break.

David was a fussy baby, especially when putting him to sleep, so Gabe used to drive him for hours just to put him asleep. Sometimes, David would be a lil shit and cry on purpose just so Gabe can drive him around.

William has a book club with Gavin, Avior and Cam! They vary their book choices from books written by authors from the renaissance to freaking Twilight. Once William learned that Darlin' is also an avid reader, he extends the invitation to them! (One they hesitantly accept.)

Vincent has made a sizeable donation to D.A.M.N. just so he can name a building after Lovely as an act of love. They pretend to not acknowledge their name on the building but adore the gesture all the same.

Due to his knowledge of anatomy, Sam is an avid drawer. Sometimes, he'll just sit around and sketch the people around him as practice. He's tried to go digital with his artwork, but very much prefers doodling by hand.

2. How loosely or strictly do they use the word ‘friend’? As loosely as possible. Everyone is Guy's friend. His friends, former classmates, connections on social media, former teachers, regular customers, neighbors, and more. And all strangers are future friends, so he might as well take the liberty to call them friends!

3. How often do they show their genuine emotions to others versus just the audience knowing? I think Guy is pretty consistent in wearing his heart on his sleeve. He's a writer! He feels things deeply and recognizes the joy and privilege it is to experience the spectrum of emotions. I think the exception would be that he tries to wave off receiving the inevitable manuscript rejections as no big deal because he wants to stay positive, but it is /such/ a big deal to him. It hurts. Thankfully, Honey (and Cheese!) give Guy the chance to be sad authentically so that they can provide ample cheering up.

9. Do they give tough love or gentle love most often? Which do they prefer to receive? Guy most often gives gentle love. It's his impulse! He is naturally inclined to be kind of a soft, squishy person. Therefore, he most often prefers the gentle love, too. However, when things get tough, Guy can and does stand his ground, providing tough love when it's the only option. Honey has learned to always take note when Guy is firm to know that he really means whatever he is saying.

Hala! Congratulations on your graduation, friend! <3 What a massive accomplishment. I'm so proud of you. And you know who else is proud of you? David Gabriel Shaw. So, please, accept these David-celebrating-your-academic-accomplishment headcanons as a graduation gift:

David has seen firsthand how hard you worked to obtain your degree. He watched you study for hours on end, work on assignments, set up extra meetings with your professors to go over certain concepts, and, occasionally, even seek out his strong arms when you struggled with the overwhelming emotions and limited time. As much as David was grateful that you allowed him to be there for you, he hated to see you push yourself to the point of crumbling. He always wished he could've done more to help, despite your assurances that his just being there was more than enough.

Thankfully, all of that's behind you now because you have FINISHED! Every semester, every class, every assignment is DONE. And David couldn't be more happy for you. Now, it's time to celebrate.

He has been planning on attending your graduation for months now. That includes checking to see routes and alternate routes to get you to the ceremony (since traffic will be a nightmare), figuring out the best places to park, acquiring tickets for the event, and arranging everything for both you and the many pack members who are so excited to cheer for you as your name is called and you walk across the stage. It's a major operation, but by the time the day of the ceremony comes, everything is set and there are no questions as to what is happening or when.

When you tried on your regalia for the first time, you expected David to make comments about how that style of clothing seemed so impractical, since you only wear it once, or complain about the price, but no. That didn't happen. David was stunned into speechlessness, so struck but how scholarly you looked.

The pack cheered so loudly for you as you accepted your diploma. Even with all the commotion, you could pick out David's screams, which almost seemed to morph into momentary howls for you.

Pictures, pictures, and more pictures afterwards! Usually, you have to beg David to stop to take a picture, but today? David wants to document ever single moment of your day. You pose with friends, faculty, pack, and family. You even make sure to get many pictures of you and David together, smiling and laughing together.

Afterwards, you and the rest of the pack head to your favorite restaurant, where David has had the reservations set for weeks. Asher makes a long, funny, heartfelt speech in your honor, and the pack toasts you and your academic achievements before you all eat.

Later that night, after a fun-filled day, you lay in bed as David holds you close and tells you how smart you are, how hard working you are, and how grateful he is to be able to share his life with you.

Also, I love the technique you used with the “(Name) couldn’t help but feel like out of everyone, they/he had gotten the short end of the Exchange Ritual stick” thing, it really emphasizes how much everyone feels the same with the current situation they’re in 🥺 I hope they’ll be able to figure things out soon, but I’m so glad they all have each other to rely on (pack dynamics make me feel all fuzzy inside)! You did amazing with this chapter Romi and I’ll be eagerly waiting for the next one!!! 💗💗💗

I love the chance to imagine them just chilling together, sometimes enjoying shared interests/activities, and other times choosing to try something new to spend time with the other because they want to spend time together and accommodate their friend.

You are a careful reader to pick up on that repetitive phrase! Thank you so much for catching it. I enjoy weaving little parallels and callbacks into longer fics like this one. Rest assured, you'll be seeing that pop up throughout future chapters of the fic. I can't wait to share more with you soon! In fact, since you wrote such a kind ask and mentioned that phrase, here's a super-short sneak peek of one place that phrase recurs in the next chapter (which heavily features David and Sweetheart.)

Today, however, even hanging out in one of their favorite poses wasn’t helping. It wasn’t helping at all. Sweetheart didn’t know how much longer they could stand to be like this. Their aura, and their many magical abilities, had been snatched away from them without so much as a warning. In its place was a core that was comparatively untrained and unhelpful. As a member of D.U.M.P.’s Telepathic Oversight Team, Cutie was considered a civilian employee and, thus, wasn’t subject to the Full Certification requirement like Sweetheart was. Cutie was certainly a powerful telepath, which Sweetheart already knew. What they didn’t know was how integral control and restraint were to telepathic powers. It took an active effort from a telepath, especially a master telepath such as Cutie, not to enter others’ minds or to project their own thoughts. Sweetheart was used to magical conjuring as being the act that took willful intention. This was something else entirely. 

And Sweetheart hated it. They hated every part of it. They hated having to spend all their time keeping their thoughts to themselves. They hated not being able to reach for the variety of elemental, energetic, and warding powers. They absolutely hated not being able to reach for their ‘stealthitude’, either. They missed their core, and everything that came along with it. Although Sweetheart knew deep in their heart that everyone was struggling with the effects of the Exchange Ritual, their empathizing with their packmates didn’t change the fact that as the most practiced magic-user, Sweetheart felt like they had the most to lose. It wasn’t fair. How could everything they had worked so hard for be gone, just like that, with no guarantee that it would ever return? 

Sweetheart couldn’t help but feel like out of everyone, they had gotten the short end of the Exchange Ritual stick.
