To see the earthy vegetables cleaned of soil and laid out ready for storage every fall brings such a joy for me. The work of a successful summer garden and harvest at the end of the season gives proof of a future that provides for winter health and happiness.

Gardening and the food it provides is medicine.

“Root Crops Stored Half Plowing Done,” Kingston Whig-Standard. November 1, 1932. Page 2. ---- This week's crop report tor Frontenac County states that practically all the root crops are stored with the exception of a few field of turnips. The yield of roots has been much heavier than for a number of years. The condition of live stock to generally good. Open pasture has been good to stock. Plowing to quite general and tt to estimated that one-half of the plowing has been completed. 

“Hogs at low in price," says the report - “a poor inducement for farmers to produce more. All live stock prices are even lower than last year at this time. A drover offered $17 to two cows and a young bull but no sale was reported. Dressed fowl and chickens are in fair demand. Chickens bring $1.25 to $1.50 per pair, dressed fowl 6O cents to $1 each. Eggs are scarce and bring 33 cents to 40 rents per dozen. Cheese and butter products have reached the lowest of the season with prices already at cent for cheese and 10 cents per pound for butter fat. Potatoes are worth 75 cents per bag with the supply apparently lower than last year. There to no movement in grain and hay. There to no demand to labor."

Anyway, a throwback to the point where Jonas suddenly wanted to get engaged, leaving me to figure out how the hell to explain that, and Vera getting engaged, and then wanting a beach orgy instead.

At that point Vera's social circle was (apart from her fiancé) her best friend who's a gay man, a few ladies one-sidedly drooling after her, and Cloud, whom she doesn't have any chemistry with. So it's not my fault she didn't get the orgy.

Once I saw this map that showed the most grown crop in every European country and for Belgium it showed lettuce, so I was like "Bullshit! I've never seen lettuce being grown here"

So, chicory is one of my favorite flowers. 99.9% of chicory plants around here have blue flowers. The natural, non-mutated color. However.. We are lucky enough to have a small area right along the road we live on that has a mutated variety. Pink! I have never seen pink chicory growing anywhere else. Just that one spot.

Well, I trimmed some stalks off the pink ones this year, and let those go to seed (a lot of them already were in seed). I now have a ton of seeds to try growing next year. I'm hoping to get those going strong on my new property. We might still get some blue plants out of these seeds. Not sure how this mutation works on a genetic level. I'm hoping we get some pinks, though. It would be nice to try and establish more of them. They're really neat!

They also come in white. I've only seen a true white chicory plant once, and I can't remember the location. Maybe someday I'll find some again. Would be really cool to grow all three.
