was there a particular scene or episode that made you want to write your favorite muse?

Dang this requires me to pick a favorite muse. So for this I will go over my most active ones and say what made me want to write them. Muses only on my hub though not my other two blogs that aren't connected here LOL. I also wont do my OCs because that's not fair. For them it was me filling a gap that their canon worlds left.

Will Byers - I think for him it was learning his story then watching the show and just that scene in season 1 right at the beginning then being like I need to know everything, and the show isn't giving it to me so I will write it myself.

Dodge Mason - The second he yelled about Panic in the diner and Heather was like "stop" and he was like "im not gonna"

Caleb Widogast - For him it was the moment he shared his backstory.

Scanlan Shorthalt - Bard's lament.

Vax - This is gonna possibly sound rude, but I wanted him to have more agency in his story. He is always giving giving giving and not really receiving back what he gives especially for certain stories. Like both he and Vex are raised by their father but that story is largely associated with Vex (even in their book). It felt like no one ever trusted him so I said I will trust you. You are mine now.

Orym - Honestly Liam describing him and I was like he's mine.

Sebastian Smythe - When he did what he could to gain forgiveness from Blaine, and made sure that was the apology he cared about because that was who he really hurt. And then the guilt he carries about Dave.

Rory Flanagan - Realizing after the first episode of his that they were gonna do him dirty I was like not on my watch bitch.

Nick Duval - When he finally got that solo. And actually a fan fic where he and Sebastian are roommates that is honestly my favorite glee fan fic ever.

Curt Mega - The second I saw him handling being interrogated really well only to be talked down to immediately after by his lover, and everyone else in his agency. I wanted to not only explain that but also make it known that Curt was very very good at his job, and at least from Cynthia's perspective she was trying to keep him humble because Curt would get a big head.

Luke Castellan - The entirety of Battle of the Labyrinth where you get the most insight into what is going on in Luke's head than any other book including his own damn diary.

Edmund Pevensie - His whole time with the White Witch followed by the slow forgiveness for himself that weighs on him in the years of his reign.

Billy Elliot - That last scene where he not only accepts himself, but also returns the affections of Michael. Also the entirety of the musical adaptation.

Link (BOTW and TOTK) - This one is hard, but I think it was the lack of story that was purely link's. Like he gets memories but they are all story beats for Zelda not for him. We learn very little about Link and I wanted to fill that. And its something that continues into the new game. Its my way of giving Link justice because the game is about Zelda link is just the narrator, whom I tend to care a bit more about.

Episode 9: The Tide of Bone

Zombie invasion! Bar the doors and fortify the mall, because all they wanna do is eat your brains.

The Good

Right off the bat, I loved the extra story we got for the Briarwoods. This is something Matt talked about at the wrap up, but we didn't get to see in the Campaign.

Plus, this justifies Delilah not letting her husband help with the fight in Whitestone, which could've turned the tides. She's too desperate to hold on to him. So much so, that it could've ultimately cost them their victory.

And not only does this flashback establish character and motivation for the couple, but also.....as bad as the Briarwoods are, the thing they serve has the potential to be so, so much worse. That scene with Delilah drawing her own blood is honestly still hard to watch.

Hey, I never noticed that poor family wriggling on the tree in that wide shot. Ew.

The fights were fun. The jokes weren't bad. Seeing Bad News used in to take down a giant was damn good. Seeing Kiki flex with some truly impressive magic was another hell yes moment, and good set up for the Sunbeam spell later.

Nice use of Percy's full name. I'd honestly started to wonder if they were going to leave that on the cutting room floor, but they picked a very good moment to use it.

I liked how they handled Vax and Keyleth here. While you get why Vax is doing it (he's liked her for a while and he doesn't want to die without her knowing it) you also get why Keyleth reacts the way she does (she does not need the distraction when they're fighting a hoard of zombies). It's surprisingly cute. And leaves the door open for further romantic development down the road.

Of course the lady of the episode is one Ms. Pike Trickfoot, swooping in at the last second to take out a shit ton of zombies, mirroring what went down in the campaign. It was such a cool moment in the original (especially since this was the first time Ashley could be back in a while) and they did it justice. Thank your Clerics, everybody! Her giving the common folk of the town some holy weapons was a nice touch.

I also just have to point out Vax repeatedly exclaiming "Ew!" or "Gross!" over the course of the episode because....mood.

The Bad

This...is another episode where the pacing does it no favors. There are multiple points in the episode where staying attached at the hip to our protagonists was unneeded and actually hurt the story.

For instance, while they were catching their breath in the safe house, we could've cut to outside. Where a bigger and bigger group of undead was accumulating out there. Then they attack. This breeds suspense and "The zombies are coming, get out of there!" type reactions. Which are always fun.

Meanwhile, the action doesn't grow; just stays constant throughout. That might sound like something you want. But you don't.

What you want is for the action to ebb, flow, and build. You want slower, safer moments that give a false sense of hope. You want the characters to think they're safe while the audience is shown that they absolutely are not. But you want every subsequent lull to be shorter, every new attack to be longer or more brutal. You want a feeling of escalation. And since we don't have that, Pike's entrance doesn't feel like the relief it should. It just feels like more action. It's great, but not as great as it could and should be.

As for Archie....not a fan of fridging. It just feels cheap. I know both Dominic Monaghan and Rory Mccan were not going to be sticking around. But they could've done something more interesting with Archie's exit.

Thinking about it now, I actually wouldn't have minded mixing Father Reynal with this version of Archie. Have him be a posthumous character, (which justifies Dominic not sticking around) but let VM find his notes. They could be read in Archie's voice and include flashbacks to resistance efforts he was up to before he died. Have the last note be specifically addressed to Percy, telling him not to give up, expressing complete faith that he was still alive and would eventually come back to oppose the Briarwoods. And that's what inspires Percy to use his full name and lead the rest of the town into battle.

Or, you know, something else. Not saying that's the best thing that could've happened, but it was another option.

A: All the art teams did a really good job, everyone came together to make it look that good. There was a lot that went in there to make it feel organic and real, like staggered gait, and different looks and personalities.

A: We made it extra since it's animated, you know, she came out of the sky and gave everyone the equivalent of Holy Weapon

A: Everything was really well done, and how they look refers to who they were before they died like: the muscle and sinew under the skin, different levels of decay, barrel as a pauldron, and the different clothes and beards

Q: Vax finally tells Keyleth how he feels, how was it distilling that moment for the animated series?

A: Super wise, but charisma is her dump stat. When it happened in the game Marisha asked Laura: "What?? How long has this been going on?" Laura: "For like fucking 40 episodes." Liam had been doing all these little things for ages like 'Vax sits next to Keyleth' and I was just like "Ok cool!" (Travis: On the show when this happened, we all escaped into our shirts like 'WHAT IS HAPPENING?') Liam trailblazed character romance in our games (Ashley: I didn't know you could do that!) It was important to not rush it here, because in the original game they had like 40 episodes of lead up and a lot of time for the romance to blossom realistically, but here there's less time so you have to be intentional about it. But I (Marisha) like how we subverted the romance trope with Keyleth, she wasn't like "OH my prince!" she's more like "Not now! this is NOT appropriate!" (lol cute)

Q: Speaking of romances: Pike and Scanlan, what the fuck?

A: Sam: I think we're destined to be together, Ashley: but it's gonna take Pike some time to make her way (all: makin' my way) they're long game so it takes a while. Sam: Scanlan has always thought he's a skilled romanticist but he actually cares about Pike but he doesn't know what to do about that, it's easy to hook up with someone but it's hard to get someone to care about you

A: Oh crap, maybe 3 years ago. But I took the last show I worked on with me, including artists and background designers (from Voltron: Legendary Defender) and we had fun with it

Travis: Dark spirits coming after VM, desmond wasn't there but it was great to lock in on those character beats and different faces of their personalities - big action moment though? Pike's return

Marisha: The sun tree was like "What the fuck is Matt thinking? Holy shit" so was great to see that translated

Ashley: Pike's return and the sun tree moment, and just in general and seeing Gilmore for the first time - it was glorious

Sam: Seeing Scanlan up on the roof amidst rain and flame, it was improv'd on the spot and now it's something that fans can watch and enjoy on their screens - "You know I love you" moment, it's cool that it's different from the game, I always pushed to change moments just a little bit, cause we have the game and we can go watch it again, so it's fun to try new things out

Arthur: Gilmore's shop, getting to flesh that out was really fun, we really went nuts, we shouldn't have gone that detailed, it's crazy - but number 1 moment hasn't come out yet and you'll see it soon!!

One thing I will say about the intro: that whole “thread of fate leading them to each other” moment is probably more telling of Scanlan’s internal character than any of his crass jokes or even his moments of epic heroism or somewhat-justified anger. All of the others look towards where that golden thread is leading, but Scanlan reaches for it. It has the same feel for me as Scanlan trying to save that last ninth-level spell slot for a Wish to save Vax; the others will follow their fate, one way or another; but Scanlan understands that ‘fate’ is another word for ‘story’, and he will reach out for it and at least try to bend it to where he wants it. That’s what a bard does.

And there’s the tree again; we do tend to focus on that a little bit more than-- OH SHIT THAT’S WHY. And of course it’s the Pike effigy we start with.

Sebastian would like Fjord best, I think. or Beau. there’s some similarities in their story arcs that he would recognize and relate to.

Kana would like Yasha, for her softness and humor as well as her rage and fear, and her ability to fully inhabit all of them at the same time.

Liam/Lily’s favorite would be Vex, or Percy. Vex because they’d see a lot of themself in her, and Percy because of the way he is when he’s with Vex.

Azalea’s favorite is definitely Jester. sweet, sheltered Jester, learning how to live in a world outside the four walls she grew up in

Rory would like Nott/Veth. there’s not a deep reason for this one lol, I just feel like they’d like the Pure DnD Energy of a character(/player) who causes problems on purpose.

Episode 6: Spark of Rebellion

This episode gets a much shorter review. While I'm a little conflicted about this one, it manages to get its feet under itself much better than the preceding episode.

Curtain's rising; let's get in our seats.

For those of you who didn't watch Campaign one of Critical Role, they made some interesting choices in this episode. Arguably the biggest one is in the reimagining of Keeper Yennen and Archibald Desnay. Originally, both were older men. Yennen was still a spiritual leader, but Desnay was an older advisor to the de Rolos.

Personally, I don't have a problem with how the show portrayed these characters. Except....I have a little bit of a critique of how one of them was used.

But that's for later.

It's not just Yennen and Desnay, though. This part of the Briarwood arc is arguably the most altered from its original counterpart. On the one hand, it's overall a solid episode. The callback to the stream's old maps made me smile. The prison break has some great action (Keyleth going Minxie!!) and the implementation of the door (the "I fell out of the window" bit is easily one of the funniest of the season). Gina Torres and Dominic Monaghan are delights, and Rory Mccan does an incredible job of giving Vedmire a very brutal, intimidating presence. Darin De Paul, as always, is a treasure. On top of that, Percy's first rampage is chill inducing, and the introduction of Bad News was excellent.

That said, on the other hand, this is another episode where I feel ambivalent about the plot deviations. In the stream there was a lot of the team debating about what to do amongst themselves, and that was not a bad thing to cut. However, I'm honestly not sure what would've been cooler: the prison break, or a variation on the stream's banshee encounter.

In that encounter, Scanlan, Percy and Vax investigated a church of the Dawn Father, looking for a potential ally in Father Reynal, who Percy had previously been familiar with. Upon entering, they found Reynal's body. The Dawn Father's iconography was defaced. And poking around led them to find notes whose author was unclear at the time, but in hindsight, was clearly Anna Ripley.

Cue the banshee fight.

There would've been a lot of potential for scares in this encounter; it could've been on par with the wraith fights in episode 4. (And I, personally, would've loved to see more horror.) To say nothing of the lead up: finding a dead former ally in a church where all the religious symbols are defiled. Now that's a setting for a horror fight.

Even Ripley's notes add another layer to the spookiness. They make it clear that she'd been spying on Percy since he originally escaped Whitestone. And when Sylas told her about Percy after their encounter in Emon, she was eager to meet with "the subject" again. Very creepy. A whole different kind of creepy than what you get from vampires and banshees.

There was also a plot reason to keep Anna's notes, but we'll get more into that once she shows up.

All in all I won't say I didn't like the episode. Or the changes. It's more that I'm not sure what we got from said changes that warranted them.

One thing I'm sure about is, like with the Sun Tree, the revelation that Cassandra was alive deserved more time and weight. Not a huge amount of time, but definitely more than it got. Like with the Sun Tree, a big part of its power was that you start to get what the reveal is going to be before it's said. So when it is, it's both satisfying and gives a sense of catharsis. It's like when that one person in your friend group says the thing out loud that everybody else is just quietly thinking. It's just a relief.

I'll also be super nitpicky and say that Percy's shift upon discovering Stonefell happens so fast it's almost funny. A little more subtlety there would've been welcome. Maybe show Percy following after, and we don't see he's got the mask on until he's facing Stonefell? Just a thought.

That said, Episode 6 is a good one, and it's the start of the roller coaster climb that eventually leads to the screaming, joyful, anxious plummet following the set up of the climax. Not bad at all.

A couple of weeks ago someone asked if I could post a list of all the ships I have that are canon and all of the ships I have that fanon. This turned into something of an endeavor as I struggled to categorize some of them and ended up with a variety of categories, as there are the unambiguous canon ships that got together and the unambiguous fanon ships that were never written as romantic, but also things like ships that got together but didn’t end up together for one reason or another, ships that were written romantically but someone died before they could get together and so on.

See, I liked the conversation about who’s actually leading, and Keyleth did actually put it best. They each lead when it’s appropriate for them to lead. They shift and change leadership roles depending on what strength is required to get through anything that gets in their way. That’s always been Vox Machina’s strength. It’s when they start thinking any one of them is The Leader that they get all fucked up.

This is a “Pike needs to internalise the fact that she’s worthy” thing, isn’t it. The fight with the Briarwoods even before she got hit with Delilah’s spell, her not being able to help as much as she wanted to, it’s all a doubt thing.

Well, Stonefell, there might be no room for heroes in Whitestone, but there’s clearly room for dishonourable weasely cowardly bastards using a chained-up dwarf as a punching bag. (Also you’re gonna find that heroes don’t take up that much room until they’re busting your door down. Just by the way.)

This is why At Dawn, We Plan was a whole thing. You’re right, Vax. Mostly. Keyleth’s plan wasn’t bad. I mean, assuming there are any animals worth a shit in Whitestone.

And that, right there, is a call to vengean-- DAYUM KEYLETH. I mean, narratively speaking, crushing the head of the resistance fighter who saved the life of one of their own basically marked Stonefell and the entire Briarwood rulership for extinction, but it’s nice to see that as a catalyst for Keyleth coming into her own righteous fury. Also, hello Minxie.

Okay, now THAT was a shot. A shot that could break the haft of a maul that heavy? Also the accuracy of it. Just a really nice touch.

“I wanted you to know it was me.” GAAAAAAAH THAT’S FUCKING TERRIFYING. Kudos to the animators. Also to Taliesin Jaffe because this is all way creepier than his original yelling.

...Then again, the yelling is equally creepy. And again, kudos to the animators; rage like that tends to look laughable in this animation style, or at least ... well, two-dimensional, pardon the pun. But the combination of rage, horror and just plain disgust on his face, both during the shooting of Stonefell and later, when yelling at Vax about his vengeance...

And then the animators let him go to horror-tinged vulnerable shock. No one gets to say the animation in this is bad. Ever.

Yeah, even knowing what does ultimately happen (though I understand that liberties will be taken here), I still get that feeling that whether “I have a sister” ends well is up in the air. I mean, that “This changes nothing” scene is all it took to flag up a few very key points: that Cassandra’s in a bad situation and might well just be going along to keep herself alive, that Cassandra might hold a grudge about being left for dead (because we can see that de Rolos hold grudges), that she has been in the custody of a vampire who likely has no qualms about messing with her head... Just a couple of lines and it sets up Cassandra’s whole moral and psychological battleground, and the defenses Percy’s going to have to get through in order to make “I have a sister” a reality.

So, six episodes in ... while the campaign will always have a special place in my heart (and now I kind of want to watch it again), I like this version ... not better, but in a different way. They’ve managed to find ways to set up the important themes in a lot less time, in subtle yet powerful ways. Haven’t seen much of Mae Catt’s stuff - then again, Mae Catt hasn’t written that much - but this was a winner.

Halloween is coming up soon! what do the ROs (and our sister) dress up as?

The Seer likes to do partner costumes (if The Speaker is willing, of course), so Batman and Robin, or Gomez and Morticia Addams, or Vex and Vax, or Mario and Luigi. She also likes to use Dog for costumes, so Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf or Dorothy and Toto are likely. On her own, she likes to do easily recognizable costumes, pop culture and movie characters that everyone knows.

Rory likes a good classic movie monster. Dracula with the cape and widow’s peak, or Wolfman in a ripped flannel shirt and wolf mask, or green-skinned Frankenstein with neck bolts, or wrap them in bandages and call them a mummy. With a bit of help from Az, they’d love to rock a Swamp Thing costume.

Kana likes drama. Their favorite costume to date was Jessica Rabbit, but they’ve done Prince and Elton John and Cher too. Lately they’ve been really into face paint costumes, and can really lean into the creepy costume angle if they’re in the mood.

Sebastian likes subtle costumes. He’ll wear a Superman shirt under his usual suit and throw on a pair of glasses and say he’s Clark Kent. Or put on a fedora and tan trenchcoat and be Philip Marlowe. Will probably at some point do a John Constantine variation (loosen up the tie, wrinkle the shirt, replace hat with cigarette) which would make Li’s day.

Liam/Lily isn’t a big fan of Halloween. Might be convinced to put on a pointed witch hat if their siblings or parents are pushy, but that’s it. Might eventually be willing to properly dress up, if they’re good enough friends with the Speaker (or dating them), or if Sebastian convinces them. They could put together some legit scary/unnerving costumes if they really put effort into it.

Azalea likes fun costumes, and often plant-based ones for obvious reasons. Has definitely been Groot at least once, and Poison Ivy. Rocks a Persephone costume. She’s also the most likely to go along with The Seer’s group costumes, so if The Speaker isn’t into that, your sister will still have a partner--and if The Speaker is into that, now there’s three of you and so many new options!
